OT: New Court Rivals thread (8/1)
So, how's everything going?
Our previous Court Rivals thread dropped off the main page, so I figured it was about time to create another one. As always, here is the link to the spreadsheet.
Last night in Blazer's Edge Court Rivals action, we had six games (including two games between BE teams).
In non-BE-conference games, BlazersEdgers lost to Sharks BC-B Team, 108-120. Scotty McDunk was the leading scorer for the 'Edgers with 21, while Monty Everest lived up to his name with 4 blocks and 7 rebounds in the losing effort.
Just Blaze dominated Rockets last night, 128-59. Unfortunately, Rockets was playing with seven filler players. Just Blaze had eight players in double-digits, led by Roy Bot with 21.
The Edge lost to boboteam, 90-113. This was truly a one-on-one matchup, as each team only has one player. In this case, boboteam's nay bob outdueled The Edge's Pat Dowdy, who was an abysmal 0-6 from the field.
Finally, BEdgers beat Okayplayer Haters by a score of 140-112. The Edgers had seven players in double-digit scoring territory. Walton Sabodenworth had 16 rebounds to pace The Edgers, while Vanilla Gorilla had 10.
We also had two inter-BE games last night!
B-Edge Odenizers beat Red Unit 105-91. Basajuan Ferran was a defensive force for the Red Unit, collecting three steals and three blocks. However, the team's offense was stifled as Red Unit was held to only 12 points in the second quarter. Sugar Britches and dee veediay each had double-doubles for the Odenizers: 14 points and 10 rebounds for Britches, alongside 10 and 14 for veediay,
Finally, vERYkERRPLEX defeated Bedgers2 by a score of 96-90. kERRPLEX was down by 10 entering the half, but played stifling defense to allow only 12 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth. Jerryd Oden had 22 rebounds for Bedgers2, and Point Guard had 5 assists and 4 steals in the losing effort.
Tonight, there is one inter-BE game: you can look forward to BEdgers (6-2) vs. Just Blaze (3-5)! Keep it right here on Blazer's Edge, for all your Blazer's Edge Court Rivals needs!

BEdgers has two chemistries
“Twin Towers” and “Shooting Gallery.” I, Vanilla Gorilla, am currently 23rd in all of court rivals in “quality stat” blocked shots.
Boomshakalaka
Ahem again
OUR Joachim Padraic is 1st (OK tied for first) in all of cour rivals in “quality stat” free throw shooting,
"We, as Blazer fans, are perhaps the luckiest fans in the league."-Idog1976, July 19.
Not if you are looking
at “quality stats”. Before last night your quality FT was 1.000. You are still 10-12 in quality FT. (On your player page there is a button above “game log” where you can choose all stats or quality stats.) You may not have trained FTs, but you must be a natural… (Of course it will catch up to you eventually) :-)
Quality stats are a metric that Court Rivals uses to determine which box score lines that players earn really matter. A lot of times, teams may play inferior competition and fill up the box score. While there’s nothing to stop someone on a Pro team from putting up 40 rebounds in a game against a Playground team, a stat line along that wave length will not be recorded as a quality stat.A quality stat is a stat earned in a game where two criteria are met:
1. Both teams had 8 or more non-filler players
2. Both teams are within 20% of the other’s total trained points

Worst skill
I meant it was the skill I am the worst at. So far I have just been lucky during the season, so don’t be surprised when you see my FT% start dropping
Just Blaze
Ahem… don’t forget to mention the rookie Rastabird Bayless who came in with 9 assists and 3 steals in only his second game!!!
And what do you mean “unfotunatey”? A win is a win and we CREAMED them!!!

Thanks RH
I just came here to post the new update. Thanks for doing the game summary , though I do think you could have simply mentioned that Just Blaze won by 68 points instead of mentioning the filler players ….
BEware BEdgers. We’ll be playing the first time with a chemistry – I’m not going to mention what it is because we want to surprise you with us, not have you forewarned. I shall now return to our team forum and announce that we have to shoot against Twin Towers and defend against Shooting Gallery.

Uh-oh.
Looks like I’ve upset Just Blaze. We’ll see if that righteous anger turns to vengeance tonight, or if they are doomed to suffer the fate of Agent 0 against the Blazers.
To be fair, they did win by 68 points. That’s a huge margin of victory, even if you’re playing against St. Mary’s Episcopal School for Blind Fish. We’ll see if they can duplicate those results against a REAL team tonight :)

Hello
Perhaps you could start a different website for your online gaming. I realize that the Bedge brought you together, but I really have no interest in your court-rivals games. Also, these threads push off other threads related to the minutae of summer time Blazers fandom.
Just a thought.
I agree on this one...
A daily thread where it’s all related works for me.
Because of yesterdays thread, I found out about it and was able to join.
I also suggest that, for those it bumps, they allow up to 50 items to be read in the options. this ensures that topics are easily found even as we move into game season!

I don’t see the problem in having a SINGLE thread for court rivals. It’s being flagged as OT, and everyone has settled into using hte dedicated thread, not cluttering up the board with other fanposts.
Once it drops off the page, a new was is created. Hardly seems problematic, especially in the context of the truly wasteful fanposts that appear here all the time.
This is a community-building exercise that has brought together over 50 dedicated members of Blazers Edge. I think that is a good thing for this site as a whole.

Awesome re-cap RH
Was it Dheepan who first mentioned Court Rivals? With the exception of one person (PAE) everyone seems to be having a great time. I find these posts better then lets trade for player x right now anyways.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.
It was actually some other guy
He started a post and only jksnake, dheepan, JTduck, and myself were interested. I decided to start a team, they joined, and then dheepan started a thread to recruit some players for us and it blew up from there. I am too lazy to see who the original poster was, but I don’t think he ever ended up on any of these teams, which is sort of funny to me…

Why do these get so many recs?
There is almost one every day. Why don’t you folks just have a daily Court Rivals open thread each day, then let it dissolve away with the other ones? I have at least one other Court Rivals thread in my top 50 diaries. This thread makes two. To me, Recommended Fanposts are diaries that everyone should read and this thread only applies to a subculture of Blazer’s Edge. You guys are the Goth BEdgers.

I think arguing that 2 out of 50 fanposts are irrelevant to you is a good sign that we have a very active community. Go to another SBNation blog, and if you go back 50 fanposts, you’ll probably have seen every fanpost in the site’s existance. A few CourtRivals posts aren’t bad, if you ask me. Just ignore them if they don’t apply to you.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get over that, and be able to play.
these posts being recced will actually
keep the number of them down. A recced CR post will stay on the main page (and get continually used) for 2-3 days. If they weren’t recced, then a new CR post will created (by someone) everytime the old one drops below about #20 on the list – which is going to be daily at least.

Court Rivals Blazer's Edge League Playoffs
Ok, we have 8 teams, which makes a nice 3-round playoff. I propose we do the standard 1v8, 4v5, 2v7, 3v6 setup and make it single elimination. However, I like best 2 of 3 for the finals. This makes 5 days total at the end of the season. We should start on like day 37 or 38 to allow for any scheduling problems or challenges that don’t get setup in time, just in case.
The way to work this is to make sure that ALL outstanding challenges for ALL teams have been completed playing by day 38. At that point, we can use the challenge system (hopefully) to setup our matchups each day.
The only thing left to decide is whether to what to base the seedings on: Team Record, Records against other BE teams, total team training point, team rating, or some combination of the above.
Thoughts?
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
Also,
can somebody compile an actual image file of the brackets once playoff time rolls around?

unfortunately...
... i don’t think you can challenge a team more than once per season. We could have this tournament at the beginning of season 4 (would make things easier as there wouldn’t be any pending challenges) seeded based on round robin results from this season. That means we should make an effort to simulate all possible inter-BE matchups this season.
Boomshakalaka
good to know.
I like the idea.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
We're playing the same team twice
We played them the 30th, a computer match-up, and they beat us by 3. Then they challenged us. I didn’t accept as they don’t qualify us for quality stats (3 filler players) but others accepted and they are now on the pending challenge list. So maybe you can’t challenge twice, but you can play someone twice.
That shouldn’t affect a pre-season tournament tho.
"We, as Blazer fans, are perhaps the luckiest fans in the league."-Idog1976, July 19.
Tough decision,
but Team Records should be thrown out immediately because I know that some teams purposefully challenge weak teams or teams with lots of fillers.
Training Points also seems unbalanced because it’s just going to be younger teams vs. older teams and it doesn’t really leave much chance.
The best choice to me is records against other BE teams.
--
by CaptainSexyJacob on Aug 1, 2008 3:45 PM PDT reply actions
how about
50% of seeding is W-L against other BE teams
50% is CR team rating
ties broken by head to head result
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
no CR team rating
Read the help section for how its determined… all wins over playground teams are scored the same way—no difference is made between a team that’s close to College D and a team that has 9 filler players.
I think total training points is a better choice if we are looking for a 2nd criteria.

Could someone please explain this to me?
The Edge lost to boboteam, 90-113. This was truly a one-on-one matchup, as each team only has one player. In this case, boboteam’s nay bob outdueled The Edge’s Pat Dowdy, who was an abysmal 0-6 from the field.
If each team only had one player, and The Edge’s Pat Dowdy was 0-6 from the field, how the heck did The Edgers get 90 points? Free throws?!

Because they are so much better than us the stats aren’t “quality” stats. So my 14 RBs don’t count in my quality average. I don’t think that’s fair. The better team’s stats shouldn’t count, but it seems like anything good the lowlier team gets against them should be counted.

lets get ready to rumble!!!!
RED UNIT ( 9-3 …. 3759 tc pts) vs. vERYkERRPLEX ( 9-3…... .3719 tc pts )
Current 3 way tie for best record with BEdgers. ( although we now have the best rating and ranking )
Curses….. now we’re going to freaking lose now that I’m putting stock in this and talking it up.

Watch out
For the dynamite chemistry of Thane Mujumba and Jay Acer coming off the bench for Red Unit. We will crush your dreams of BE dominance!
Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.
oh yeah????
well…. we just got two pairs of chemistries last night ourselves….. RED UNIT is our test drive!
( where the heck is the smack forum? )
Red Unit has a really good team.

trash talk forum
I went in and entered a BLAZER EDGERS!!! forum in Court Rivals to keep Dave’s domain in control if anyone wants to get in on it.
the problem with this...
as already evidenced a tad bit is that all the trolls/flamers/idiots from the rest of CR will come in and bring the thread down with them.
We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic civilized forum here on BE, and it truly is a rarity in the world of internet forums, a fact of which I’m always reminded of when I start peeking into other sites.
I’d just as soon keep the trash talking goin in this thread (and it’s future descendants). It will undoubtedly be more on point and civilized.

Lucky for you....
The BEdgers have been in a rut the last two games. Hopefully tomorrow we will dig ourselves out ;)
RUDY > MJ
there was a discussion
WAY up this thread about putting together a league playoff at the conclusion of this season. We bandied about how to do the seedings, and given how CR works ratings and rank (which is just kinda garbage) and the fact that teams can load up their overall W-L by playing patsies, the consensus was to go simply off of record against other BE opponents.
Once teams start playing each other more to get the full round robin complete (7 games each), then the seedings will work themselves out.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
no worries....
we’re good with that… it’s early

Speaking of Just Blaze
3 in a row! We totally dominated BE-Odenizers. 134—112. Claire Redfield scored a team season high 31 points 12 for 18 from the floor and 6 of 8 three-pointers. James Dean had a triple double 13 and 10 and Marcus Lucas was one point shy of one – 9 & 14 along with a team high 5 blocks. Again a real team effort with 6 players in double figures – and we out rebounded them by 16.

Good game all around
we just kept extending the lead as we switched units!!!
This game tonight should be tight. I think the win will be decided by balance of team and players, and leadership.

Bedgers2 on a roll
After suffering a 4-game skid while our coach was out of town, the Bedge2 crew has bounced back in fine form. After dismantling a severley overmatched opponent last night, we followed that up tonight with a very impressive 118-109 wire to wire victory over the Bay Area All Stars, a college-B team who has us outtrained 4752-4497.
Tony “Montana” Nutanyeba once again led the white unit with 26 points on 10-16 shooting, including a perfect 4-4 from three. Vince Cakewalk added 17, 6, and 3 while Billy Ray Johnson cleaned up the glass with 12 and 16, and even through in 3 assists. Point Guard went for 8 points and 8 dimes, and LaMarcus Royden blocked 5 shots and handed out 3 assists.
On the black unit, Jerryd Oden continued his dominance on the boards, pulling down 24 more (6 offensive) to boost his season average to 12.7. High Flier led the unit with 16 points on 8-11 shooting while Blackhear Beazie added 15 and Bobby Dijene threw in 12. Barack Obama had an amazing 4 blocks to go with his 5 points and 5 assists.
Tomorrow’s test against BoA should be a good one, as both teams are pretty close in training points and have identical 8-5 records. BoA is led by Yellow Mamba’s 20.6 points per game and the rebounding prowess of Minh Nguyen, averaging nearly 15 per game.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
Red Unit = Mash Unit
So the kERRpLEX ( who’s next to mock the name… buehler? anyone? I’m sure it’s something original ) rolled on tonight over RED UNIT….. turning them into a MASH unit. Should have signed Hawkeye as a free agent to help.
kERRpLEX opened up with a 18 point drubbing in the first quarter and there was not enough bandages from Hot Lips to stop the bleeding. It was a nice test run of our first chemistries on an interleague team.
Just when I thought this was Game of the Week…. Looks like it was only a teaser as BEdge and vERYkERRPLEX meet tomorrow ( when we get a couple of more chemistries ironically enough ).
Good stuff and this is a little more addicting than krack cocaine. ( well…. a little more addicting when you keep winning )
All-Stars
Well, maybe not yet, but there are some BE players who are leaders in quality stats. I only looked for th highest in each stat so I’m sure there are more names. Also, any stat not listed means none in top 100.
Scoring : M. Batlaw BEdgers 121th 20.2 ppg
3PT%: B. Rodridge The Edge 20th .818
FT% : B. Wayne BEdgers (can’t read my writing for rank) .889
Assists: M. Ice BlazersEdgers 34th? 5.9
RBs : W. Sabodenworth BEdgers 39th? 13.7
Steals: T. Mujumba Red Unit 17th 2.7
Blocks : Vanilla Gorilla BEdgers 22nd 3.3
Turnovers : Vanilla Gorilla BEdgers 10th 0.4
Good work, fellas!
(I also think that the BE teams have some of the more creative player names. Many teams have just used real player names. I’ve seen Greg Oden, LaMarcus, Brandon, and I just saw Rudy … there are probably more.)

Woo hoo!
What a great bounce-back game for BEdgers after two straight losses.
Three players with more than 20 points each (Batlaw, Noam and Michael), and Walton Sabodenworth pulled down 27 rebounds! Whoa!

BEdgers2 continue streak
drubbing another college team, BoA, 122-98.
Tony “Montana” Nutenyeba blew the game open midway through the 3rd quarter by railing off 10 quicky points to help turn an 11 point lead into a nearly 25 point one.
Bobby Dijene led the black unit with 27 points. Barack Obama added 9 assists, and Billy Ray Johnson and Jerryd oden both had 12 boards.
That’s 3 in a row for the “2” crew, who are now 9-5 on the season (2-2 in the BE league). They’ll go for win number 10 tomorrow against the San Diege Vatos, whose balanced attack sees 7 guys averaging in double figures. The Vatos however have been loading up on Creampuffs of late and will face their first significant challenge in quite some time.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
haha
Yeah, vERYkERRPLEX had been getting a little big for their britches, hadn’t they? Maybe a 57-point loss will bring them back down to earth.

gulp.... gulp... gulp.....
..... that is the sound of one six pack of ‘shut up juice’ going down the pipe.
I needed that. I was feeling parched. We are humbled….. but for a rookie team ( all of us are first timers )... we’re hanging in there and having a good showing( with the exclusion of tonight )
Talk about defense…. sheesh, our shooters went 12 for 37?? 27 rebounds for Sabodenworth ( love the name by the way )??
So reality question…. and in all honesty It didn’t seem realistic that we would be BEdge tonight because of the tc detriment…. but how do rookie teams even contend with 2nd and 3rd season guys? ( stop the pile on of the whining jokes ) but seems like any playoffs should be heavily weighted towards the upper tc’d teams.
by Kersey Lives on Aug 6, 2008 9:30 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
I am sure the playoffs are weighted towards upper tc'd teams....
I like Court Rivals because of the way they reset attributes every season, it doesn’t allow the oldest teams to run away and never be caught. Check out the help section, but basically, you only retain 1/4 of all the attribute points you aquired by training all season. This system rewards the teams that are most devoted to religious training from season to season. There is obviously more to it, so read up in the help section of court rivals…
RUDY > MJ
And while those two teams
strut and swagger, Just Blaze puts their energy into team play and adds another quiet notch to their backboard. Three in a row ; this one over a team from Taiwan, a team with a higher rating and a higher ranking.
Just sayin’.

It's about good teamwork and good leadership.
We never really gave up control of the game and rolled it out with a nice finish.
I suspect we’ll be the sleeper in the play-offs. Rookies this season, started the season late… but ready to play as a team.
I like our odds. Particularly starting play-offs after a reset.

Thats why the playoff thing doesnt make sense to me....
Our team has several chemistries right now, and we have earned them by hard training all season. Those chemistries will be lost after the reset, and the distance in training points we have earned through consistent training is also lost for the most part. It would be like if the nba played out the regular season, sent everybody home for the summer, and held the playoffs during training camp the next year. Its not going to accurately decide who the best team of season 3 was, so I don’t really see the point….
RUDY > MJ
Playoffs take place over the last three days of the season

I think myemic...
is talking about the proposed “Blazers Edge Playoffs.” The reason for my idea for having it at the start of season 4 was that I didn’t think teams could challenge each other twice in a season. Someone else suggested that you can do this as long as the other teams issues the rematch.
So, I guess we could theoretically do the BE playoffs in days 40, 41 and 42 of this season.

I've always wondered...
...is douglast “Douglas T” or “Doug Last”? I always assumed it was the latter, as if he were some poor guy named Doug who was always picked last for teams in PE class.
I even pronounce it in my head as one word (“Douglast”) or maybe even hypenated (“Doug-Last”).

yeah...
It’s one of those things I clearly didn’t think out
My first name is Douglas. My middle name is T (just T, it’s not short for anything, it’s just the letter). “Douglas” is generally taken most places when I go to register, so at some point I started using “douglast”, which in my mind is “Douglas T”, but when you read it clearly looks like “Doug Last”.
and no, I was never picked lastin PE. Usually in the top 15% or so. ;-)

Tonight
Tonight we dine… on REAL GM!!!
Five filler players. I imagine this will be really painful… to them. It’ll be an opportunity to see how the team can play when they’re allowed to really run (like they should be against such a weaker opponent), unfortunately it won’t really say much.
I look forward to some juicy team stats and possibly some rare personal high stats.

BlazersEdgers are struggling
We’ve been consistantly playing teams that are much higher ranked then us, and one of our players has not logged on since Aug. 1st and is waaaay behind on training points. We’re still working out the kinks, but we’ve got three chemistries so I think the team is pretty solid.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.
Red Unit keeps getting scheduled with crappy teams!
I want to play teams without fillers! I want quality stats!
We just have to take care of our challenge requests and find good matches.

They're working on it
I mentioned that same problem to the developer and he said he’s working on something that would allow you to have only quality opponents assigned if you chose. No ETA on when that would happen.

vERYkERRPLEX bounces back
... but is this the week of all edge teams or what???
beating BLAZING THE EDGE handily tonight ( although it does look like they got a late start in season 3 to be fair ). JR Token Whitey going off with 34, 4, 4 and 5 steals while Slappy Przybilla continuing his dominance on the boards with 26 tonight.
NEXT UP…. another good one for the week, JUST BLAZE in what looks to be a favorite in the match up to come…. although it would appear the matchup is pretty tight. Good Luck ( that shut up juice really has a kick )
