OT: New Court Rivals thread (8/1)

So, how's everything going?

Our previous Court Rivals thread dropped off the main page, so I figured it was about time to create another one. As always, here is the link to the spreadsheet.

Last night in Blazer's Edge Court Rivals action, we had six games (including two games between BE teams).

In non-BE-conference games, BlazersEdgers lost to Sharks BC-B Team, 108-120. Scotty McDunk was the leading scorer for the 'Edgers with 21, while Monty Everest lived up to his name with 4 blocks and 7 rebounds in the losing effort.

Just Blaze dominated Rockets last night, 128-59. Unfortunately, Rockets was playing with seven filler players. Just Blaze had eight players in double-digits, led by Roy Bot with 21.

The Edge lost to boboteam, 90-113. This was truly a one-on-one matchup, as each team only has one player. In this case, boboteam's nay bob outdueled The Edge's Pat Dowdy, who was an abysmal 0-6 from the field.

Finally, BEdgers beat Okayplayer Haters by a score of 140-112. The Edgers had seven players in double-digit scoring territory. Walton Sabodenworth had 16 rebounds to pace The Edgers, while Vanilla Gorilla had 10.

We also had two inter-BE games last night!

B-Edge Odenizers beat Red Unit 105-91. Basajuan Ferran was a defensive force for the Red Unit, collecting three steals and three blocks. However, the team's offense was stifled as Red Unit was held to only 12 points in the second quarter. Sugar Britches and dee veediay each had double-doubles for the Odenizers: 14 points and 10 rebounds for Britches, alongside 10 and 14 for veediay,

Finally, vERYkERRPLEX defeated Bedgers2 by a score of 96-90. kERRPLEX was down by 10 entering the half, but played stifling defense to allow only 12 points in the third quarter and 19 in the fourth. Jerryd Oden had 22 rebounds for Bedgers2, and Point Guard had 5 assists and 4 steals in the losing effort.

Tonight, there is one inter-BE game: you can look forward to BEdgers (6-2) vs. Just Blaze (3-5)! Keep it right here on Blazer's Edge, for all your Blazer's Edge Court Rivals needs!

BEdgers has two chemistries

“Twin Towers” and “Shooting Gallery.” I, Vanilla Gorilla, am currently 23rd in all of court rivals in “quality stat” blocked shots.

Its my worst stat!

by Devenex on Aug 1, 2008 10:28 PM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Not if you are looking

at “quality stats”. Before last night your quality FT was 1.000. You are still 10-12 in quality FT. (On your player page there is a button above “game log” where you can choose all stats or quality stats.) You may not have trained FTs, but you must be a natural… (Of course it will catch up to you eventually) :-)

Quality stats are a metric that Court Rivals uses to determine which box score lines that players earn really matter. A lot of times, teams may play inferior competition and fill up the box score. While there’s nothing to stop someone on a Pro team from putting up 40 rebounds in a game against a Playground team, a stat line along that wave length will not be recorded as a quality stat.

A quality stat is a stat earned in a game where two criteria are met:
1. Both teams had 8 or more non-filler players
2. Both teams are within 20% of the other’s total trained points

Ahem… don’t forget to mention the rookie Rastabird Bayless who came in with 9 assists and 3 steals in only his second game!!!

And what do you mean “unfotunatey”? A win is a win and we CREAMED them!!!

Thanks RH

I just came here to post the new update. Thanks for doing the game summary , though I do think you could have simply mentioned that Just Blaze won by 68 points instead of mentioning the filler players ….

BEware BEdgers. We’ll be playing the first time with a chemistry – I’m not going to mention what it is because we want to surprise you with us, not have you forewarned. I shall now return to our team forum and announce that we have to shoot against Twin Towers and defend against Shooting Gallery.

Uh-oh.

Looks like I’ve upset Just Blaze. We’ll see if that righteous anger turns to vengeance tonight, or if they are doomed to suffer the fate of Agent 0 against the Blazers.

To be fair, they did win by 68 points. That’s a huge margin of victory, even if you’re playing against St. Mary’s Episcopal School for Blind Fish. We’ll see if they can duplicate those results against a REAL team tonight :)

Hello

Perhaps you could start a different website for your online gaming. I realize that the Bedge brought you together, but I really have no interest in your court-rivals games. Also, these threads push off other threads related to the minutae of summer time Blazers fandom.

Just a thought.

by 50backflips on Aug 1, 2008 12:20 PM PDT reply reply   0 recs

I'm fine with it as long as there isn't more than one up at once.

The good fanposts generally get rec’d and stay visible for a couple of days.

At least we don't have Zito's contract.

by usmcr3049 on Aug 1, 2008 12:32 PM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

I agree on this one...

A daily thread where it’s all related works for me.

Because of yesterdays thread, I found out about it and was able to join.

I also suggest that, for those it bumps, they allow up to 50 items to be read in the options. this ensures that topics are easily found even as we move into game season!

I don’t see the problem in having a SINGLE thread for court rivals. It’s being flagged as OT, and everyone has settled into using hte dedicated thread, not cluttering up the board with other fanposts.

Once it drops off the page, a new was is created. Hardly seems problematic, especially in the context of the truly wasteful fanposts that appear here all the time.

This is a community-building exercise that has brought together over 50 dedicated members of Blazers Edge. I think that is a good thing for this site as a whole.

It was actually some other guy

He started a post and only jksnake, dheepan, JTduck, and myself were interested. I decided to start a team, they joined, and then dheepan started a thread to recruit some players for us and it blew up from there. I am too lazy to see who the original poster was, but I don’t think he ever ended up on any of these teams, which is sort of funny to me…

There is almost one every day. Why don’t you folks just have a daily Court Rivals open thread each day, then let it dissolve away with the other ones? I have at least one other Court Rivals thread in my top 50 diaries. This thread makes two. To me, Recommended Fanposts are diaries that everyone should read and this thread only applies to a subculture of Blazer’s Edge. You guys are the Goth BEdgers.

these posts being recced will actually

keep the number of them down. A recced CR post will stay on the main page (and get continually used) for 2-3 days. If they weren’t recced, then a new CR post will created (by someone) everytime the old one drops below about #20 on the list – which is going to be daily at least.

Court Rivals Blazer's Edge League Playoffs

Ok, we have 8 teams, which makes a nice 3-round playoff. I propose we do the standard 1v8, 4v5, 2v7, 3v6 setup and make it single elimination. However, I like best 2 of 3 for the finals. This makes 5 days total at the end of the season. We should start on like day 37 or 38 to allow for any scheduling problems or challenges that don’t get setup in time, just in case.

The way to work this is to make sure that ALL outstanding challenges for ALL teams have been completed playing by day 38. At that point, we can use the challenge system (hopefully) to setup our matchups each day.

The only thing left to decide is whether to what to base the seedings on: Team Record, Records against other BE teams, total team training point, team rating, or some combination of the above.

Thoughts?

unfortunately...

... i don’t think you can challenge a team more than once per season. We could have this tournament at the beginning of season 4 (would make things easier as there wouldn’t be any pending challenges) seeded based on round robin results from this season. That means we should make an effort to simulate all possible inter-BE matchups this season.

We're playing the same team twice

We played them the 30th, a computer match-up, and they beat us by 3. Then they challenged us. I didn’t accept as they don’t qualify us for quality stats (3 filler players) but others accepted and they are now on the pending challenge list. So maybe you can’t challenge twice, but you can play someone twice.

That shouldn’t affect a pre-season tournament tho.

by jorga on Aug 1, 2008 5:47 PM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

Tough decision,

but Team Records should be thrown out immediately because I know that some teams purposefully challenge weak teams or teams with lots of fillers.

Training Points also seems unbalanced because it’s just going to be younger teams vs. older teams and it doesn’t really leave much chance.

The best choice to me is records against other BE teams.

--

by CaptainSexyJacob on Aug 1, 2008 3:45 PM PDT reply reply   0 recs

how about

50% of seeding is W-L against other BE teams
50% is CR team rating

by douglast on Aug 1, 2008 3:54 PM PDT to parent up reply reply   0 recs

no CR team rating

Read the help section for how its determined… all wins over playground teams are scored the same way—no difference is made between a team that’s close to College D and a team that has 9 filler players.

I think total training points is a better choice if we are looking for a 2nd criteria.
