Blazers dissapointed in Bayless's skills?

Star-divide

From Isaac Ropp's blog on 1080thefan.com:

After getting a look at him over the last few days, the word is the Blazers are a bit stunned by how less far along Bayless is than they thought. Remember, they didn't work him out prior to the draft. This is why he fell from a potential top-5 pick to #11. He will play almost exclusively at the point guard spot so be patient. That isn't an easy transition and it will take time. This is not an immediate impact player, folks. I would expect him to play no more than 15 minutes per game early on. However, it appears he's got a mean streak a mile wide which this team definitely needs.

(emphasis added)

If it's true, I think it means we might not see as much of Bayless this year as we thought. However, I don't think it takes anything away from his potential. It just sounds like he might need to spend a longer time training.

"the word"

Never doubt the Word. Actually, come to think of it, I always expected him to get less than 15 minutes early in the season.

by pualo on Jul 9, 2008 8:35 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Same here.

15 minutes per game is pretty good compared to what I envisioned during his rookie year.

by bocious on Jul 9, 2008 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No kidding. We already have two other rookies coming in who will probably play more minutes than Bayless. If the team found 15mpg of playing time for Bayless right from the beginning of the season I would be surprised. This is not a statement about the kid’s talent as much as it about the team’s depth and having experienced players on the floor.

As for Bayless, I think Portland will be a good fit for him and vice versa. He can play for real, and his strengths fit right in with what the team needs. He has the physical ability and mental drive to become a premier defender at the point. If this ever comes to pass the rest of league will be put on notice.

Part of the problem with Bayless

Is that people usually overhype rookies to an endless degree then become so worried that they are overhyping him that they underhype him and basically make it like he can’t play at all.

I think Bayless will be a solid player for us. I expect somewhere around 15-20 mins a game, maybe 8 pgg and 4 apg with a PER somewhere around 12. Not great, but not worthless.

I remember an NBA scout once said that Martell was the worst player taken in his draft and would be out of the league in a couple years (read it on TrueHoop IIRC). You just gotta take all this with a grain of salt.

Fan Seahawks Coverage

I love the Seahawks, but couldn’t stand the Seahawks talk on The Fan when I lived in Portland. They had nothing to discuss that I hadn’t already heard or read somewhere else. It seems like if they’re going to cover an out of market team, they should at least do it well so they can justify it somehow.

On a similar note, the Sonics move makes me wonder if the Blazers will get more attention in Seattle, and I wonder if the coverage will be good or if it will be like The Fan’s coverage of the Seahawks.

by bocious on Jul 10, 2008 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I guess my point is

That its not fair for a sandbag of negativity to be unleashed on 1080. I realize and understand that 95.5 has won over most of the radio listeners, but its not fair for everyone to suddenly start hating on the station that promoted, and critisized our teams before just because there is a new flavor of the month.

I think they both do a good job. You are right Bocious, I just think there is not a fair bias being floated around, and 1080 deserves more respect, They still report on the Blazers more than they do on any other team. They care about Portland Sports. Why hate on Portland radio? They get paid for being biased. Maybe they do suck, but at least its something different, right? Why completely hate on them?

I personally hate the cheap shots the stations make at each other (DAWSON), but I understand its the nature of the business.

You are absolutely right OiR. I do feel that 1080 probably

isn’t as informed about the Blazers as 95.5 is. However, 95.5 is under more of a constraint in reporting on anything negative because it is owned by Paul Allen. I guess it’s up to me to filter the information on offer and find a balance. Abby Hoffman said he watched 4 hrs. of TV a day in order to know what his enemy was doing.

Eh, I think you are being pessimistic there

I’m not sure about that. It’s not like Jack was a world beater by any margin. He was a pretty poor defender, spotty jump shooter and a below average passer for a point guard. He could take it to the hoop and that was about it.

Bayless can too and he’s a far better shooter. They both have similar builds (is Bayless taller?) but Jerryd is quicker and much more explosive. It’s fair to say he won’t bring the intangibles, or the fire Jack brought last year, but I could see Bayless averaging 9pts a game like Jack last year. I mean if you think about it Jack was basically made into a shooting guard last year, except… he really couldn’t shoot.

I say the jury is out until the games begin

Wasn’t Bayless a Wooden Award finalist? And playing out of postion none the less? I say the only thing Jack has over him is experience. I think Bayless will cause us to forget about Jack really quickly. The one thing Jarrett Jack did that was a consistant positive is “drive to the basket”. Bayless is much quicker and more athletic than Jack. Should be fun to watch. We have a good starting unit. It is going to be our bench, however, that is really going to be the major difference.

Hmm

A. “Anyone who expects an all-star season is in for a disappointment.” - of course. I think he has that kidn of talent, but as you said, he’s 19. Give it 4-5 years for that.
B. “Not better than Jack on day 1.” - not so sure. I think he’ll be a better individual on-the-ball defender than Jack from the start. He may also be a better scorer. He will also make even more mistakes than Jack did at first. He won’t be as good in a team defensive scheme as Jack was at first. He won’t play as much at first, either. (Jack wouldn’t have played as much on this year’s team, though). Better than Jack? Perhaps, for what we need him to do, he will be. In the long run, he certainly will be.

So are we supposed to assume that all of the pro scouts got this one wrong that he actually isn’t good at all? Really, I doubt so many people who are paid to know exactly how good a player is suck at their job. If he’s terrible, why did we have him at 4 on our draft board?

I watched his 2nd game at Arizona..

Wow, you could sure see the talent. It was early in the season and he did make some mistakes, but he was the 2nd best player on the court. Singletary from Virginia was the best, but again this was Bayless’ 2nd game.
Blayless showed great lateral movement. He was able to stay with Singletary on almost every play, making him pass off several times. Singletary scored mostly against Arizona’s zone.
Bayless had a couple of outstanding passes (one terrific fast break pass) and he was the quickest player out there.
This is the only game that I’ve seen solely looking a Bayless. He had 21 pts and had his hand in lots of defensive plays.

I know this was only one game, but I think that you all will see a pretty darn good player in summer league.

A workout is a small part of it

The INTERVIEW is important to me, but how the dude played during his college career and the scouting and interviews with teachers, coaches, parents, friends, that’s all more important than a One on None workout.

Those workouts are nice and help you get a feel for the player, just like an interview, but it’s very low on the totem pole of important factors in drafting. Everyone looks great in a One person workout.

pickup games

i read somewhere that bayless doesn’t like playing pickup games, maybe he doesn’t bring it 100% in practice and pickup games, and keeps a more mental approach, so he can bring it during game situations?

by contemnor on Jul 9, 2008 10:28 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I read the opposite

He didn’t like playing pickup games because they lacked structure and people were goofing off too much. He preferred to go in a gym and work on his game, not play for goofs with friends on the court.

I believe it was in the current documentary.

He supposedly plays hard, always. What you wrote seems to be the opposite of what his reputation suggests. Of course, none of us really know one way or another.

My memory is that Juan Dixon just always sucked in practice and wanted the benefit of the doubt.

They had a special segment for the press conference

And Quick came on with a ‘good news / bad news’ story. Isaac asked for the bad news first, and Jason said that they worked him out a little and were surprised to see he wasn’t as crisp as they had expected. The good news, though, was that KP saw that Jerryd had a big of an attitude and he loved it. Quick speculated that he might be the kind of player to start a fight or two, and that this team needs that desperately.

KP's& Bayless's Comments Yesterday

(Read the below and then ask yourself if KP would be so assertive and direct – given these words will come back to haunt him in a hurry, if he were “disappointed” in Bayless’s skill level. 40 games isn’t much. And to those who don’t think Bayless can play point – he played it for most of the last 5 years. So, we’ll see.

Kevin Pritchard, the general manager who has a spotless record of identifying young talent, is the one insisting Bayless enters his professional career with training wheels, placing the University of Arizona product somewhere between a project and a rotation player.

“And maybe that is me just being a little over-cautious,” Pritchard said. “The biggest thing with him is we are going to have to show patience; we are going to have to live with some of his mistakes. But this kid is going to figure it out - it may take him 40 games - but he is going to figure it out.”

Bayless was insistent he won’t need training wheels as he enters his professional career. He said the questions regarding his ability to play point guard are off base. He said he has played point guard all his life until last season, when, beset by injuries, Arizona shuffled its lineup, moving Nic Wise to point guard and Bayless to shooting guard.

“For the sake of the team, I moved over to (shooting guard),” Bayless said. “But I know I’m a point guard and I know I feel most comfortable at that position.”

Pritchard said Blazers fans will soon discover that Bayless has an unusual quality: fire. It was a trait often lacking last season on a Blazers team that is slowly developing a stereotype as being too nice. With Bayless, Pritchard says that will change.

“That fire, you will see it, it will come out,” Pritchard said. “Sometimes you will say, ‘Whoa, that’s too much.’ Other times you will go, ‘That’s exactly what we need.’ It’s an internal drive that he has that is amazing. And I don’t think he really cares if he is going to make people upset. I think he wants to win. And sometimes he is going to do whatever it takes to win, and if people are going to get upset, then people are going to get upset.”

BS rumor

Per Nate during the interview wednesday on 1080 http://kfxx.radiotown.com/audio/mcmillan0709.mp3
Paraphrased: “We didn’t think he’d fall that far in the draft and we only learned the night before he might so we didn’t call him in to work out. He’s high on the list and I’m excited to watch him pay… TOMORROW

So… sounds like a BS rumor if Nate hasn’t seen him play yet.

My take as well. He showed up Tuesday with his parents and couldn’t be announced to the world that he was a Blazer until yesteray late. Then he signed. Now, he’s a Blazer – and now, he can start playing. Until then, he didn’t belong to us – and we couldn’t touch him until he did.

I call BS on the Ropp Report

Ropp is trying to stir the pot to create controversy and increase his ratings. Bayless has exactly the skills the Blazers need at the point: shooting, slashing and quickness the will be key to the 2nd unit.

How long has the kid been in town?

Let’s say he started playing right away, so he has played at MOST twice, by the time Quick reported this. Let’s say the report was true… so a rookie coming off the draft tours and everything, looks a little off when showing up for early training?

Is two days enough time to be disappointed with how “crisp” someone looks? Everyone looks rusty if they haven’t played for a week or two or three.

If Quick really said this, it sounds like airtime filler. Not much else to say.

Even if true, it doesn’t mean much. He just got here, after all. I would be worried if he didn’t go well in Summer League, because that league is MADE for quick guards who can score like him (I mean, Nate Robinson is the MVP after all), so he should do really well there.

Reports saying he looked off after a day or two of brief workouts? I dunno… seems like no problem there.

I trust Quick, don’t trust 1080, and I don’t trust snap judgements like this. It’s meaningless.

Defense

Here’s the deal: if Jerryd has half a head, then he’ll see where Jarret went wrong, and that’s in defense. How many times have we heard Coach say, ”... if you want to play for me, then you have to play defense…?” I can remember accounts of Jarret’s apparent increase in “lateral movement” from years before, and still the opposition was blowing by him.

If there was anything I was looking for from videos or descriptions from him game it was how quick he was. However, quickness doesn’t imediately translate into defense, it is a serious building block for it. They both seem to have the abillity to drive and finish well, where Jerryd needs to better Jarret is in kicking it out if in trouble, where Jarret wouldn’t.

Bayless must learn from his predecessors (namely Jarret for the similarities of their game) least he stumble into their pitfalls and go the way of a journeyman. Yes Jerryd can shoot better and is quicker, but where a PG really makes a difference is in his decision making. If he doesn’t try to do it all himself and think he’s so much better than who he’s playing instead of deferring to a more open teammate, then he’ll be “the fit” and do just fine; prove himself in his head and heart first then in body.

Does this mean I have to like Diogu now???
