Personally, it's a little early for my predictions.
That, and every team in the West in vulnerable in some way. We may have another year of relative parody among the top seven or eight teams, which makes predictions really tough.

Heh
You said “parody” when I think you meant “parity.” I’m not pointing this out to correct your grammar, but because it’s actually quite funny that way. Indeed, if the top teams are all parodying each other, prediction will be very difficult. Let’s see….
Imagine a farcical game in which the L@kers wear special black uniforms, K()be comes off the bench (with a big old baldspot shaved into the top of his head) and flails and flops his way to 20-5-5, Gasol bugs his eyes out even more when he gets called for a charge, but has an uneventful 22 and 8, and Farmar comes to the game with designer jeans on and a really bad rap album, and continues to look befuddled by the American game.
Meanwhile, the Spurs have special yellow jerseys (Real spurs are made of brass sometimes, right? That’s the slim justification.) and Pop refuses to talk during timeouts. Ginobili scores 38 by taking 60 shots, Ime gets way ripped before the game and chests up to little players only to run away when they stand up to him, and Tony Parker puts on ridiculously large dumbo ears that slow down his drives, but magically strengthen his outside shooting.
I could go for a year of parody, I think….

You're right, I did mean 'parity.'
But I think parody is possibly more appropriate, given that many teams attempted to do the same things that others were doing last year. The only person not emulating each other badly has been Portland, building something special from the ground up.
Good catch, but now I think I meant it. :)

this is a weekly update showing movement in rankings of teams of what they did last year and this of season
by topher223 on Jul 9, 2008 3:22 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
A weekly update like ESPN power rankings would be interesting
but I don’t think there will be that much changing week to week during the summer. An in season ranking would be a good idea. I wasn’t here last season, so I don’t know if that’s already been done, but I like it.
The street lights is on.
by Magnum on Jul 9, 2008 5:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think it's funny...
because about a week ago everyone was willing to throw around predictions with no caveats about future player movement. I guess we all learned something from the unexpected Brand signing.
As for weekly power rankings, here are mine:
1. LAL
2. NOH
3. Utah
4. Houston
5. SAS
6.PHX
7. DAL
8. BLAZERS!!!
9. Denver
And, topher, were you really calling Dirk soft? That guy has come back from injuries faster than just about anyone in NBA history. His team being soft on the other hand…

Not bad
Hard to say how quickly age will catch up to Dallas, Phoenix and San Antonio and what to make of Denver. We’ll need to finish ahead of at least one of those squads (or Houston if injuries hit hard again) to make the playoffs. I’m still not convinced we can.

I agree
Dallas and Phoenix are the real wild cards. I think they’ll both significantly drop this season. If they don’t Portland could be in trouble. But I really think they’re getting too old. Especially after trades (Kidd and Shaq) that aged them about 50 years.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.—Dune

Dallas just got a little younger again after the bad Kidd trade
Phoenix and San Antonio are standing pretty much still, yet the window for these three teams is not shut. I would go with Dallas at 6, Phoenix at 7, Portland 8 (realistically, I hope for more). Otherwise the prediction seems pretty accurate.
Oh, and a disclaimer since Dallas is my “other team”. But whoever says Dirk is soft has no idea how hard he works to maintain and improve his game every day. And if there ever was a player who deserves the moniker “he really makes the guys around him better” its Nash, then him. Most people just don’t give him credit e.g. for how many rebounds he gets, how many assists he gives and how much he has to help out both under the basket and at the perimeter.

I may just be venting...
Now, I’m trying really hard not to vent my frustrations from a long, hard day at work, but aren’t “health concerns” an issue for every team at the beginning of the season? If you’re going to say “health is the big ?” for Houston, what about Portland? Aren’t we relying on a rookie who just spent an entire season doing rehab work, a shooting guard who has a chronic heel/foot issue, a power forward with a heart condition, and so on and so on…
Dallas isn’t quite as soft as you’re making them out to be. Dirk Nowitzki is a former MVP, J-Kidd is still the starter for Team USA, and they now have a full season to play together. Also, Dirk was the only player who showed up for the New Orleans series, so I hardly consider him a marshmallow. Just because they aren’t a good match-up against New Orleans (Paul and Chandler are too strong against Dallas’ weaknesses), doesn’t mean they won’t run the table against team’s who don’t concentrate night in and night out. Plus, who is their owner? Cuban would practically donate his body to science if it meant the Mavericks won an NBA title…
The real kicker, though, is Golden State. The team loses their star point guard and number one option on offense, gains a shoot-first shooting guard (who is best suited as a third option) to supplement their 3 other shoot first shooting guards, and to top it off their coach has one foot out the door (since Nelly is supposedly retiring after this season). But they’re still going to be 42 – 40, right?
I know everyone loves to make predictions about the upcoming season, but it helps if they’re grounded in basketball analysis. We’re all watching the same game here, so try and tell us about something that we may or may not be seeing especially if this is a “Weekly Update.”

roygoes houston health is a big time deal cuz t-mac and ming dont have much aruond them and the hornets where killed by their lack of health two years ago remember buddy plus golden state has some awesome matchups but no bench to help them win more then 40 to 45 games and dirk weted him self in the games with miami and golden state and hes such a go leader thats why dallas shot them selfs in the foot with that j-kidd deal trying to get some backbone yeah that work real well is that good basketball analysis or i bet your mike rice kinda guy when it comes to bball analysis please
by topher223 on Jul 9, 2008 5:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Hahaha...
Didn’t the Rockets have the longest winning streak in the league after Ming went down?
The Hornets were killed by their lack of depth two years ago. Then they signed Mo Peterson. Hilton Armstrong came alive as a backup to Chandler. David West became an All-Star. And if they resign Jannero Pargo, they’ve found their “sparkplug off the bench.” But you’re right, their health concerns from two years ago are a major issue. Some actual basketball analysis would be:
2 .n.o hornets 55-27 – We’ve seen as far as Chris Paul can take this team with David West and Tyson Chandler as his main options. Their biggest questions lies with Peja Stojacovic, who at his best is the perfect 3rd scoring option to have beside Chris Paul. He’s a great three-point shooter, but he has major health concerns, and if his back isn’t 100%, then it may be another second round and out for the Hornets.Golden State has some awesome match ups. So did the 2006 Atlanta Hawks. But with no point guard to speak of, they aren’t winning 42 games. Unless they make a move and acquire a distributor, they’re a roster full of gunners and second/third/fourth bananas. Assuming Golden State plays with their current roster, I would gladly make a friendly wager (say, a piece of Blazers memorabilia) that says they do not finish the season over .500. But hey, feel free to turn me down. Wouldn’t want your weekly update to have any accountability or anything…
Two years ago, the Mavericks were over matched by “fun ‘n gun” basketball. Dirk was out of his element as he’s not an up-tempo player and the rest of the Mavericks roster (including their coach) was flat out unable to match the intensity of the now deconstructed Warriors team. But how many games did they win during the regular season? How many games did they win the following year? They’re going to be a great regular season team, even if they continue to face bad match ups in the first round of the playoffs. They’re built to beat the Spurs, but their weakness is up-tempo. GS met them with an up-tempo game and destroyed them. So, they reacted hastily and pulled the trigger on a deal for one of the most well rounded point guards of our generation (and a sure-fire Hall of Famer).
Even if you’re considering Dirk a complimentary player, he’s been arguably the second or third most consistent player in the NBA after Tim Duncan and your choice of Lebron/Kobe. Consistency wins games during the regular season and it takes a “go leader” (I think that’s good leader) to win night in and night out (something Dirk has proven during the regular season).
Oh and by the way, nice name drop with the “Mike Rice” line. You should apply to be my Rebecca Haarlow.

hey man
I know you’re new to the whole Blazersedge thing, but this kind of post should probably fall under the junk drawer. Fanposts have traditionally been bringing new information to Blazersedge, or have brought a new solution to a blazers issue, and this post really doesn’t do either.
Plus it is definitely not a good idea to call someone out who has written a full critique of your fan post where your justification for your rankings are one sentence no-analysis blurbs. I mean I know you think that what you have to say is important, but look at the way guys such as mortimer and jscot write up their fanposts, they are well reasearched and have some thought behind them. No offense, since you haven’t been here that long, but stuff like this just clutters up the side-bar, and could easily find a better home in the junk drawer.

Continuing with the current introspective trend here on BE ...
If anybody (e.g., Dave) has stipulated that fanposts must be for the purpose of breaking news or introducing novel theories on this site, I haven’t heard about it up until now.
Yes, fanposts do seem to disappear from the sidebar at an ever-increasing rate. And, in recognition of that fact, it would be nice if we could all reasonably limit our own fanpost contributions so as to give others a fair chance to air their concerns.
The Junk Drawer is a great idea for those little snippets that the BEdger thinks don’t merit a full-blown fanpost.
But, if somebody really wants to create a new fanpost to discuss something that is not new, but is nevertheless important for that person, I think that is perfectly okay.
Am I misunderstanding what anyone has said, or what this site is all about? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Hence the traditionally...
This is this guy’s second fanpost, and it is almost identical to the first. I felt that a bit of guidance by looking to guys like Morty and jscot would be a good way to help show him more of why this site was created, and what adds to the discussion.
He is obviously free to do whatever he wishes, but going out and personally attacking the writer of a critique, instead of explaining his own thinking, does nothing to further discussion on this site, and I felt that his thoughts would be better received if he changed his style a little bit. But by using crude hyperbolic language and insults, he is simply trying to pick a fight and there are plenty of other sites for that.
I don’t know, maybe I am the only one who feels that this site is somehow different than O-live, and that the discussion and fanposts should have some merit to them. I have already seen my other favorite website (reddit.com) fall to low standards, but I feel like with a little bit of help this site can keep its higher standards as long as people know how to self-police themselves.

Okay
The only part of your post that I addressed had to do with fanpost expectations. I think I understand your concern about them.
A friend of mine was watering his lawn when I rode up on my bike. I was impressed by the lush, green grass - my own “lawn” is mostly weeds and moss - and told him so. He said that rather than use weed killers and spend a lot of time trying to eradicate the growth he didn’t want, he just kept planting more grass seed and watering it.

I think the L@kers will surprise some people ...
by not being nearly as good as everyone thinks they will be. I’ll go out on a limb and say they don’t work nearly as well with Bynum in the lineup and Odom at the 3 or out altogether. Bynum’s knee has serious issues. It’ll be a long time before he’s mentally recovered from that thing. He’s not nearly the passer Odom is. And if Odom’s at the 3, then who’s shooting from the outside? Oh sure they’ll be good, but I’m not ready to hand them the best record in the conference just yet.

I predicted that IF we make the play-offs (looking much more likely now considering a depleted golden state and a reduced clippers from what I had been expecting) that IF we played the lakers, we’d be going to the finals to lose to the Celtics.

Kidding, mostly. No, really, I’m kidding.

I remember a conference by a Spanish Supreme Court judge...
In an important judgement in Spain he had a different opinion from the majority of the tribunal members and he wrote a very interesting and well thought particular vote explaining his position (as it must be each time a particular vote happens). In that conference he talked about that recent decision like this, more or less: “I voted differently, but the majority of the Court members did a great work and finally I´m sure they were right”. All his attitude made me feel that he was far above the human miseries, flying near of a kind of heaven. Few months later he died of cancer leaving me, someone he had never met personally, an unpayable lesson.
