Why not Josh Smith?
So I think that this is where I start off.....' long time reader, first time post... '....
But I heard about Elton Brand going to Philly today and just made me feel for Baron Davis. Not really.... with that combination of moves, we get to worry that much less about GSW and the Clips. I thought the Clips were trouble with Davis, Brand, Magette and Kaman and Gordon? Now.... no Brand and Magette is still being shopped. Welcome home Baron.
In the same update with Brand, I heard Josh Smith's name out there and I'm thinking.... why has he not come up in conversation before? I mean is he not what we need in a true lock down 3? The kid is not even 23 yet which fits perfectly into our window and he is a monster on steals and blocks. We talk of waiting for the summer of Free agency next year when all of our cap room comes available.... but why wait if Smith is there for the taking? What do we want that would be better than a situation like this? This would validate any logo for the coming year of ITS G.O. TIME ( this is my vote to replace Rise with Us ). Not to mention we do need to leave some of the cap room available to resign all of these studs to keep the same team in 4 years.
Atlanta would have to be interested in a Frye, Webster or Outlaw and LaFrentz to make the numbers work. Frye gives them a big man to work in Tandem with Horford ( Fryes game is outside where Horford is inside ) Marvin Williams is really too small to be playing 4 so would move to 3 for them.
How does this not make sense? Granted, I'm not aware of the relationship with Smith and the Hawks, but I see Hawks bball on TBS and fans are .... not as exuberant as Blazer fans. I really think that has to be one of the worst arenas for a fan base.
Think of a line up:
Oden, Aldridge, Smith, Roy, Bayless
Seriously.... think about that one.
Say it with me......GO TIME.
What are your guys thoughts?

and defend damir by saying that Outlaw may not be like Josh Smith yet, but he has the physical assets to become a lock down defender like Smith if he keeps improving. He could be the guy on this team that gets the tough SF assignments like Lebron James.

little bit of a homer pick
everyone is forgetting Smith is over a year younger, and since they both came out of HS, they both should have at least similar potential and room for growth…lets face it, smith is a very solid defender, while Trout still has a lot of work to do on the defensive end. I love Travis, but he’s not close to Josh Smith at this point

I'm very interested in what Smith's price ends up being
I’m not sure he’s a guy you’d break the bank for, but I agree he’d be tremendous here and a major upgrade at SF. I don’t see it happening since we’ll need to eventually pay the stars we already have.

seriously....
you’re comparing Travis Outlaw to Josh Smith. Don’t get me wrong…. love Outlaw, but Smith is much more physical presence defensively. Outlaw is a great spark offensively. This team is asking for more defense and interior presence.

Man vs. Boy
Smith is much farther ahead them Outlaw is as far as talent. I think Outlaw and think he has a chance to be a special player (ala Cliff Robinson) in the NBA. But Smith is an intimidator and has basketball IQ right now. If Portland wants to step up and really take this team to the next level this would be a great option.
With a front court of Smith (SF), Aldridge (PF) and Oden (Monster), this would as solid of a defensive line as there is in the NBA. Then it really won’t matter who we have as a point guard as long as they can hit a wide open 3 pointer!!!

i dont know if FD can be defined, at least not by me...
i don’t want to speak for shoals…
but a poor definition is doing things in an unorthodox, spectacular, (often) counter-productive manner… where athleticism, potential, and jaw-dropping talent trump fundamentals, old-school, etc.
the hawks and the warriors were the most FD teams last year….
"The Hawks are anarchic, dangerous, the impossible dream that we secretly never want realized. They are a glorious, shambolic mess, full of spirit but explaining exactly why this country needed a Continental Congress."—Shoals
"Josh Smith, the everywhere-at-once, gloriously inconsistent terror."—Shoals
here’s the recent FD post on Smith: http://freedarko.blogspot.com/2008/07/every-new-generation-needs-generation.html#comments
having a roster with bayless, roy, rudy, TO (the most FD Blazer currently), GO and Josh Smith would just be ridiculous.
so much talent, so many absurd combinations.
in simpler terms: steve blake is not FD.
maybe there are other FD regulars that can help add to this…

FD
The problem with the FreeDarko roster is that they are never a winning team. FreeDarko celebrates teams that are inordinately fun to watch because they seemingly don’t have any semblance of “regular” basketball. I love that site but secretly wish that the Blazers are never “Darko” enough to fit Shoals parameters.

Josh Smith is a freak beast. I love this guy. I think he is going to become one of the most versatile players we have seen in a while. A scorer, slasher, big man, who swats at a record pace.
A healthy Oden, Roy, LMA, plus Josh Smith would be unfair.

I love everything Smith brings EXCEPT his shooting....
He shoots an atrocious 26% from deep, we absolutely need our small forward to be a threat from behind the arc. If he could hit the deep shot with any consistency at all, i would be all over him. As it stands now, I am not so sure. Just look at what J Jones did for us and basically all he brought to a game was his deep shooting, 3pt shooting from our sf s vital on this team…

Smith=no no
I was REALLY high on Smith as well and his stats are out of the world. But I have a feeling he may be just an Andrei Kirilenko waiting. He still has a lot of potential at such a young age, but he apparently has a very bad attitude. I don’t see how KP will accept a locker room cancer.
Besides, I really think his offense is raw and his defense is overrated. If you look at the games he played against Portland, I felt he was ineffective. Oh by the way, consistency seems to be a problem for him. His blocks are all just Marcus Camby blocks. Besides bpg is an already overrated statistic alone. Travis has some nice blocks, but we can’t consider him to honestly be a great defender. His man to man defense isn’t terrific from neither the perimeter nor the interior. I just feel a lot of people give him too much credit for D. His shot is also bad, as mentioned above. And Portland’s game insists quality shooting.
Smith will also look for a max contract deal. I don’t know if we can keep Oden, LMA, Roy, and possibly Bayless if we sign Josh Smith. Unless Josh Smith is willing to sacrifice some money.

re: shooting
i don’t see the knock on Smith’s shooting to be a real concern. Understand that he is reliant on interior posessions and his defense. He only made 15 less 3 pointers than Travis last year with the same amount of attempts. I don’t see that as such a traumatic number. With Bayless, Rudy, Roy and Webster ( if this trade was to includ TO )... all can shoot outside with some good consistency. Hell, Aldridge isn’t exactly a low post presence either…. he loves to step out and hit the bank shot or 18 footer. Oden is going to give us an sorely needed interior presence, but Smith would only solidify that. Do you want to go down the lane with Oden and Smith’s meat hooks in the air???
However, I don’t have an answer to his attitude. I wasn’t aware of the magnitude of his issues. Done with cancers and if that is what he is… then that should squash my little pipe dream.
by Kersey Lives on Jul 8, 2008 11:18 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I say KP get it done!
I tend to agree with Kersey Lives and think that it would be ideal if Smith had the 3 pt shoot, but not necessary. This would be the lock down defensive unit of the NBA and would scare the Celts into rethinking their whole game. With Blake, Bayless, Rudy and Roy in the back court…..wow….its hard not to imagine the parade down Broadway! I think Smith would provide that lock down defensive perimeter player that this team still lacks.
KG will have to think twice about coming into the Rose Garden and trying to pull his bulling tactics. Smith also brings that nastiness that this group (really nice guys) needs to put it over the edge. If Smith has a little bit of an attitude than so be it, we could use a little crazy from time to time.
As far as the contract goes, I don’t think that a team is going to have to sight Smith to a max contract unless they are desperate to get him. If we send RLF, Webster and Fry to Hotlanta for Smith (sign and trade) and what ever bad contract they need to dumpt to make the trade work, then I say KP get it done!

Yeah, and maybe
we could sign Lebron when he becomes a free agent in 2010! Seriously, we’re not going to shell out that kind of money when we need to land contract deals with Roy, LMA, and Oden in the future. It’s a nice thought, but it doesn’t work that way.

I got nothing against Josh Smith but Outlaw has really impressed me. You ever notice how scared Josh Smith looked in crunch time and how you see no fear on Outlaws face at that time of the game? Outlaw drained a game winner in Josh Smith’s face. Roy brought us back with Josh Smith’s supposed “great defense” on him. I would much rather have Travis Outlaw who is just starting to tap into his potential. Travis has good chemistry with our team and has the NBA mentality that we need.

Would need a huge character change
I get to see a lot of Atlanta games (since I live here!) and while Josh is extremely talented he would have a hard time meshing with our team as structured. He NEEDS to be the central character and I have a hard time believing that he would alter his game to suit our current roster. He NEEDS to shoot (and often does at inopportune times), he NEEDS the spotlight and he NEEDS to be more careful with the ball (high rate of turnovers). He NEEDS work on refining his offensive moves (kind of like Travis) and NEEDS to work on his on ball defense.
Get the drift?
However, if he instantly matured and was agreeable to focus on his strengths he would be a great add. He is a great shot blocker, can rebound with the best of them when he wants, is a great finisher and can pass the ball as well.
I look at Josh as someone on the cusp of greatness, yet who could easily just be another great athlete who never lived up to the expectations we have.

defense….. lock down defender….. some kind of low post presence.
as well as we need to do something with Frye and Webster and Blake according to Dave. Why You Will See Blazers Traded This Year
by Dave on Jun 23, 2008 2:36 AM PDT
This is part of the big picture Tom. A trade for a person like Smith accomplishes all of the above while trimming the rotation down to 8 or 9. It also is a trade that would be attractive to the other side.
The 2 main problems that would be viewed with this trade proposal would be how we sign a big name like him and keep the other big 3 contracts in the future ( Roy, Oden, LMA ) as well as Smith’s attitude in the locker room….. NOT that he’s too ugly.

Very talented in an athletic free wheeling way, but
dosen’t fit in our CULTURE ! If you go back he has issues
with coaching and shot attempts. Why would we need to

and mature together, tend to be more loyal/tighter
within that framework.

players at every position. Don’t you remember the “Star” laden

I need some clarification
RFA means Atlanta match any offer. So why do we see sign and trades so often? Is this because if a team, say Portland, offers Smith a 5 year 60 Mil deal, and Atlanta could then say that they will match it and keep Smith UNLESS Portland would like Atlanta to sign & trade so Atlanta gets something back? Is that how it works?
If that is the case, we would without doubt have to send LaFrentz, since Smith is rumored to be getting an offer of 5 years, 66 Mil from Philly, 11.5 Mil of that would be in the trade. But Atlanta would then also demand something in return from the Blazers, who knows what exactly they will ask for since sign & trades don’t necessarily have to have a balance in talent being swapped. If Outlaw is involved (likely) this would put another 4 Mil on the trade so we’d have to sign Smith for almost 17 Mil per or include another Hawk in the trade worth at least a few Mil. I don’t see either of those happening.
Actually, Speedy Claxton makes 5.7, and 5.2 the next two years. If you estimate a good contract that Atlanta might not match would be 5 years, 70 Mil, with the 1st year being about 12 Mil, that would be 17.7 Mil that counts towards the trade. So KP could match that with LaFrentz and Outlaw for a total of $16.7 Mil. We’d likely have to sweeten the pot a tad, maybe some cash or a future pick or rights to Koponen, but I’d be happy with that trade.
Sorry about the long comment
