Elton Brand To Sign With 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers have apparently won the Elton Brand free-agent sweepstakes.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday that Brand has informed the Sixers that he will accept a five-year deal worth an estimated $82 million and spurn what was presumed to be a slam-dunk return to the Los Angeles Clippers to hook up with Clipper-to-be Baron Davis.

The Sixers cannot formally sign Brand before midnight, with Wednesday serving as the first day that NBA teams can officially complete signings and trades after the lifting of a leaguewide moratorium which began July 1.

I did!

I’ve been riding the Brand to Philly wagon for a while now. Smart move on his part. Better team, better pay, better chance to success.

by damir on Jul 8, 2008 7:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

couldn’t have gone much better for us.

I think we should be better than both those teams now. Now we just need to jump ahead of one of the 8 that made it last year. Easier said than done, but certainly possible.

I like Brand in Philly- I could see them going at least to round 2, maybe the East Finals.

Clippers fans are getting that familiar feeling.

With Maggette going to the Warriors, who will Baron Davis play with? This makes me feel for Clippers fans. They were all set to make a playoff push next season, and poof! it’s gone. Business as usual, I suppose.

On the plus side, as Ben. eluded to, there’s no one left to challenge Portland as an up-and-coming team in the West. I’m going to wait and see if any other big moves happen before trying to predict the West.

Maybe they could do a sign and trade

with Kaman? It seems like they have a nice up and down team in LAC now and I dont see how the old school play of Kaman fits into that. Maybe I am wrong as I have not seen Kaman play a whole lot, but vikings are usually slow by nature…and brutal…to look at (how can you talk about Kaman with out slipping in a low blow about his looks. Classy as usual.)

Isn’t Kaman German now? That would make him a Gaul wouldn’t it? Same thing as a Viking, but still.

Does he remind anyone else of a tall version of Jake Busey (actor)?

The Clippers current roster does not make the playoffs

They might have with Brand, they surely won’t now.

I think that’s a solid move for the Sixers. They’re going to be dangerous and could easily catch a few favorable matchups in the playoffs and end up in the conference finals. The Celtics will still be at the top, but after that the East is open. The Lebrons can’t seem to find enough talent to put around their star. Detriot is looking to move pieces and would probably be too old to compete if they don’t. Orlando is above average, but with Lewis’ massive contract I don’t think they can fill out their roster. Toronto could challenge if J. O’Neal can put something half decent together, otherwise, they’re probably out in the 1st round again. I don’t know if I would include the Wizards, they’re just barely above .500 the last few years.
I think the Sixers could snag a 5 seed.

As far as the West….
Playoffs
L*kers
Hornets
Jazz
Spurs
Rockets
Suns
Blazers
Nuggets

Lottery:
Dallas
Kings
Clippers
Warriors
Wolves
Grizzles
OKC’s

The street lights is on.

I dont know if I agree about the Wiz

they have had some tough end of season injuries. Next year might be really good for them. Remember how they put the beatdown on beantown (I thought that one up all by myself) last year? I think the can definitely put it together to get to the 2nd round at least in the east (that one was unintentional).

As far as your West playoffs go I would hav to agree but I would have the Suns and Dallas trade places.

I don't care about Baron

I’m just a little happy that he pulled the “Oh, I’m just opting out so that my team can re-sign me” crap and then went to the Clippers the same day he said that, then, Elton Brand pulled the same maneuver with the, “I’m just opting out to give the Clippers some flexibility to get another big name,” then leaving and going to Philly. Icing on an already good day.

uh

fine to say Clips won’t make the playoffs even with Smith, but your argument isn’t the reason. Let’s try it for the Blazers.

S. Blake- ok
B. Roy- good but injury concerns
M. Webster- eh
L. Aldridge- good
G. Oden- rookie AND injury concerns

T. Outlaw- good
R. Fernandez- rookie
J. Bayless- rookie
J. Przybilla- always injured
C. Frye- can’t rebound

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Jul 8, 2008 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

I think my argument is exactly the reason. The point I’m trying to make is that they don’t have very many good players, even with Boom Dizzle. One of their players who could be good is a rookie, which means he’ll be inconsistent, and another is a sophomore, which means he’ll only be slight less inconsistent. Another one of their good players is hurt a lot, and another one is pretty old.

So you can say all those same things about our team? Right.

Are you trying to be argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative here? Yawn.

Allow me to balance jksnake's pessimism with some optimismism

S. Blake- Already got one championship under his belt, soon to have lots more
B. Roy- The reincarnation of Penny Hardaway with a sprinkling of MJ
M. Webster- K*be Bryant Lite
L. Aldridge- Tim Duncan Lite
G. Oden- Bill Russell in the making

T. Outlaw- Rudy Gay Lite
R. Fernandez- Manu Ginobili hybridized with Kevin Martin
J. Bayless- Chauncy Billups
J. Przybilla- Played every game this year until he broke his hand going up for a nasty dunk
C. Frye- The man with sweet interior defense

not sure if you are playing along

or if you missed my point.

I was saying you can’t do an analysis where you write off all a team’s players by using a pessimistic one word description for them.

The Clips post could just as easily have been:

B. Davis- electric; a top 5 PG.
J. Smith- the best athlete in the NBA with solid and improving skills
E. Gordon- college scoring machine
C. Kaman- double double monster
A. Thornton- solid rookie looking for a breakout year
Mobley- proven scorer

Ok, now I don't know if you missed my point or were just playing along

The whole point of my post was to brag about Channing Frye’s interior defense.

But to get back on topic, here’s my scouting report

B. Davis- top PG in LA
J. Smith- The coolest guy named Josh ‘sides me
E. Gordon- top prospect out of Indiana
C. Kaman- shorten those three words to simply “Monster” (in a freddy sort of way)
A. Thornton- Just call him Phat Al
Mobley- The coolest part of Jungle Book ever.

Obviously playoff bound.

I don't fear Golden State or LAC at all

All those guys that changed teams are second-tier players, and none of them is going to a team that is going to contend for a title. That includes Brand to Philly.

I'd have to say

that from what I’ve heard Brand is a first tier player. Word around the street is he’s legit.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

So...

will it be smug of me to feel bad for the clippers?

The get Davis and then lose Brand. Can you say “OUCH!!!”

On the other hand… I’m freaking AMUSED that Davis is now in a WORSE situation.

I think boomdizzleness said it best up above. That’s pretty much was my first reaction as well.

The pieces probably don't match

But Kaman, Thornton, Eric Gordon, Baron, that’s a good foursome. Not gonna make the playoffs probably, but it ain’t that much worse than the Warriors—and really, Baron Davis made those Warriors go. He was why they were good (Stephen Jackson too, and they started winning when he came back and yadayada, but Baron’s PG play, however inconsistent and moody and annoying it is, made that team go).

I don’t see why Baron can’t make the Clippers better than they were all by himself, though the Brand blow does make them not as formidable as before…

Plus, Baron gets more money, gets to move back home (he went to high school not far from me in Santa Monica, and he’s known for being real LA-ish), and I think kinda just makes a lateral move team wise.

Without Baron, the Warriors are probably going to be one of the worst teams unless Monta becomes more than just a scorer and one of their young bigs develop astronomically as well. The Clippers will be kinda decent, I think, as long as Baron and Kaman stay healthy (which isn’t a certainty for sure). On paper, to me, they definitely got talent, and they’ve always missed a stellar PG like Baron, and he’ll probably shine there.

To do Nelly Ball, you gotta have a playmaker who can run up the court and find people. Monta Ellis is ONLY a scorer as of now, and that makes Stephen Jackson become the Scottie Pippen-type point guard in the halfcourt. It’s gonna take a lot of improvising and craziness to put out some lineups that make sense for Golden State, while the Clippers have a more traditional (yet still athletic and talented) starting lineup.

The Warriors bench is probably better, and the Clippers have no bench, but if healthy those starters are better than what the Warriors had. To me, anyways.

I much prefer rooting for the Warriors, so I don’t think I’m biased here. I feel awful for both franchises, because each were bad for so long and then each had that one season where they FINALLY make the playoffs, enter the 2nd round even, but then it’s back to ‘normal’ again. That sucks.

One of the worst teams in the league huh?

There still going to lead the league in scoring. Whether we play in any defense remains to be seen.

by houseofprime on Jul 9, 2008 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You'll still be a really fun team

And I’ll watch a lot of the Warriors games still.

But I just wonder who is actually going to be a point guard on that team. Monta should be allowed to do what he does, and that’s score. He isn’t a creator. Stephen Jackson can playmake a bit, but he’s better used as an endpoint as well. Al Harrington, Beidrins, Wright, Barnes (if re-signed), all need someone to get them the ball. Baron was that guy before.

Out of those people, I’d only say Monta is good to outstanding at creating his own shot. He might actually be the only one who is even somewhat DECENT at getting his own shot. Jackson will always be able to jack up a contested deep three, but that isn’t exactly shot creating.

Fun to watch, though. And I don’t mean that condescendingly; you got a lot of really fun, intriguing players, but no shot creators or playmakers, so while you got a lot of guys who can put the ball in the hoop, there won’t be a guy who can get the ball TO those scorers.

So, without a proper PG to fully utilize Nelly-Ball’s uptempo attacking style, someone who can run fast and make smart decisions with the ball on the move, I dunno how well the Warriors will do, even though they got talented scorers.

Monta could lead the league in scoring, though. That’d be cool.

This problem could be fixed in free agency, but I dunno what player would solve the gaping hole left by Baron. CJ Watson is a decent young backup who I root for, but backup PG play has always been a weakness for the Dubs once Baron got some rest. Baron was so perfect for Nelly Ball, I dunno how it works without a creative playmaker/shotmaker like him…

Not telling you anything you don’t already know, of course. I’d much rather you guys were good over an LA team (even if it’s an LA team as pathetic as the Clippers).
