A Rudy Interview
It's in Spanish so I don't know if it has already been posted or if it's new. If someone would be so kind to interpret (Tigard schools expected we would be well served learning French). The link is from ESPN.
http://www.abc.es/20080707/deportes-baloncesto/volver-paso-atras_200807070257.html
According to the ESPN summary Rudy is talking about the option of going back to Europe if he doesn't adapt well to the NBA or if he doesn't get enough playing time. Hopefully he will do great and Blazer fans won't have anything to worry about.

I am not going to lose money, but I am going to earn less.
I will try to learn from him(Roy) in the trainings. He is the team´s franchise player and there will be necessary to wait for events. Jarret Jack has gone away to Indiana and he was playing 20 minutes per game. If I see that I do not have those minutes, I would think about the exit.
I thought a lot before I took this difficult decision.”
The rest is the journalist´s comments including that Sergio wants to be traded.

"If I see that I do not have those minutes, I would think about the exit."
So is this an ultimatum(sp?) that if he doesn’t get 20 minutes per game he will leave?
I think after a year in the states it will be that much harder to go back, even if he isn’t COMPLETELY happy. Therefore, I think he’ll be a lifer in Portland.

If he’s good, I think he’ll play. It’s that simple.
I don’ t like that it feels like he’s dictating to the blazers. It’s NEVER good when players do that, but we’ll see. We could just trade him if we needed to and should be able to get some good pieces.
I don’t know if he’ll get that this year, but I think next year it’s realistic and more minutes towards the end of the year.

I’m just sick of the foreign stereotyping of my eating habits. Just because I eat hamburger meat for 20 of my 21 meals for the week doesn’t mean I’m a native of the “Burger Country.” I also drink 10-15 Slurpees a month. Does that make me mayor of Slurpee City? Probably not. Because if it did, I would be opening malls and passing cutting-edge Slurpee legislation (e.g. no more sugar-free slurpee flavours).

Like they should talk
I was really looking forward to getting some real authentic Mexican food from the motherland of Spain, to see what made Rudy and Sergio grow up so strong. Boy, color me disappointed. Lemme tell you, Mexican food SUCKED in Spain, like they had rarely even traditionally cooked or ate it! I abouts threw my gut up.
I ordered a steak fajita, and I got ground beef over a bed of pimentos(!) and stale flour tortillas. No cheese, no sour cream, not even a tomato. Onions were available, but for extra. These Spaniards were the sorriest bunch of Mexicans I ever did see!
Even if I wanted to eat McDonalds in Europe, I’m not one to wait in a half hour line for the most popular food in the city. Those McDonalds are PACKED!
Big Slurpee throws a lot of weight around Washington these days… I’d be careful about what legislation you propose passing. It’s not a threat, just a… suggestion.

Somehow, even Mexican restaurants in America mess it up. It doesn’t even matter what you’re TRYING to make, if you got meat cheese tortillas and tomatoes it should be good by default.

I got a McDonalds placemat menu in Arabic
From a trip to Casablanca, and I liked it so much I framed it. It’s a commentary on something or other (I’ll leave that to the historians to decide).
I DID LIKE ONE THING most Euro McDonalds had… maybe it was just in Eastern Europe? It was a pork burger sandwich, and I liked it because I like ground pork sandwiches. A friend in Latvia translated it as the “Country Mac” or “Farmers Mac”, and I forget what the name of it was that she translated from.
In Morocco I stayed mostly in the country side in smallish towns without American restaurants, and Casablanca had the most American restaurants that I had seen in the country: Pizza hut, Burger King, McDonalds, etc. I checked the prices at Pizza Hut because it was next to the McDonalds, and a normal cheese pizza was MORE expensive than all of my hotel rooms were on the rest of my Moroccan trip.
A room in most small towns was like 5 bucks (not a nice room of course), and the pizza was 10 or so.
No matter where I went in Europe though, McDonalds was the place to be. A young dude really, really helped me out of a pinch in eastern Europe, and I offered to buy him a meal to thank him, and we met up the next day to eat. I offered to take him ANYWHERE he wanted to go, and all he wanted was free McDonalds. I felt bad taking him there, but he seriously only wanted that—and price wise (compared to other local restaurants), I guess it was an expensive meal.

Every McDonalds that I went to in Russia (3 of them) had the standard menu. So no Farmers Mac in that part of Eastern Europe. But all of those McDonalds were packed full of the twenty-something offspring of Mafia types despite the fact that the ice cream machines kept on breaking.

The faux-mexican place gave me “tortilla chips” that were really multi-grain crackers. The “salsa” was closer to spicy marinara, and the meat had been boiled (of course) and not in the tasty mexican way, but in the nasty, flavorless way.
On top of all that, they had no ranch dressing that I could find in the whole country! At least the beer was good.

I actually live with a diabetic
Sugar-free foodstuffs (with the exception of diet soda) actually have more carbohydrates than the regular foodstuffs they intend to replicate. Or, as is often the case, the subtracted sugar is replaced with lipids—arguably more dangerous to diabetics in the long run than short-term high blood sugar.

I am waiting to judge Rudy’s attitude once he gets to the states and starts interacting with the coaches and players. He is not going to be a star here like he was in Europe, but I think he knows that and is playing his cards accordingly. The team is stacked...
...it is completely natural to worry about minutes. He just gave up ~$4 million a year, is moving to a new country to pursue a dream, and probably has a firsthand account as what happened to Sergio. He will want some guarantees. Realistically, it may be a mixed blessing that Jones opted out, but because Trout is moving to the 3, we are still pretty tight in terms of minutes.

Jermaine O'Neal and Drazen Petrovic both had similar complaints...
...back in the day.
At the time, it was hard to argue with their lack of playing time, given the rosters we had. The big difference, however, is Rudy’s experience. He’s not a high-schooler who needs to learn fundamentals. He’s an established Euro player who just needs to adjust to the NBA game.
In Rudy’s case, I don’t see this being as much of a problem, since our backcourt as currently constructed seems shallow enough to get him his 20 minutes a game if he’s good enough to justify playing them.
And that’s just THIS season. Assuming he shows even a fraction of the skill he’s being hyped about, then 20 minutes a game will be more than adequate to secure a much larger role in the rotation during the coming season.
I don’t see any problem with his comments, and I think both KP and Nate are on the same page in regards to giving him his shot.
Wherever you go, there you are.
by Majikj0n on Jul 7, 2008 11:02 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Not a Problem
I’m not bothered by Rudy’s attitude at all. He had a $20 million net Euro 5 year contract, which is $31 million Net US, on the table that he walked away from for relative peanuts. He didn’t come over here to collect splinters on the bench, after all. He’s simply being honest. After all, if he can’t, as he gets used to the NBA, play at least 20 minutes a game, then he’s not particularly valuable to us either. The bottom line is that Mac likes a three guard rotation, and Rudy, along with Bayless, is pencilled in downstream as that third guard. That 96 minutes would divide up basically 36 – 38 for Roy, and 26 – 30 each for Bayless and Rudy – with a few minutes for number 4. If he doesn’t measure up, we’d trade him anyhow in order to get someone that can play those 26 – 30 minutes. That’s the way the NBA is. It’s not a charity, and Rudy is being realistic. Blake, in turn, whose contract is up next year, is the odd man out if Rudy/Bayless show they can perform. We might keep him as a 4th, but at $5+ million a year, we also may not do that. After all, the 4th guard is a 6-10 minute a game player, and $5 million is a lot to pay for that.

Maybe the fact that Pritchard his staff and the owner of the team
did everything they could to lure him over. That sort of recruitment leads a person to think he’s special. This is something that likely does not escape KPs attention, so it’s also unlikely he’d do anything like that recruitment without having a VERY HIGH opinion of his abilities and the likelihood of him matching up.
Based on what? I guess you’d have to say based on KPs opinion and how it changed Rudy’s value of himself. I’m not sure any of us are in a better position or have a better ability to judge Rudy’s potential effectiveness. So, while we’re valuing him on all his Euro achievements and his Youtube highlights, KP got a little more involved than us.
But, I guess we could take that brazen attitude and run with it. Oden, good luck man and I hope you don’t plan on playing much this season because we don’t have anything to justify giving you minutes. I’m not trying to be mean or anything, just saying it doesn’t sound right to dismiss a player without cause.

well guy,
KP does have a high opinion of rudy, and he did a lot to get him to come over here, and rudy has trhe right to think that he is somewhat special because of all these things, but that does not give him the right to demand minutes. He can think to himself that he should be getting decent minutes over here, but he does not need to say it publicly.
And try not to compare rudy’s situation with oden’s situation. Rudy is coming into a team that has plenty of guards that dont play the point. Oden is coming into a team that doesnt have much of what he brings. Also oden is not demanding publicly that he should have lots of minutes. Also Oden was the #1 overall pick. Also Oden isnt threatening to go to spain if he doesnt get what he wants. Also Oden didnt tell the blazers who they should or shouldnt draft.
by PippenAintEasy on Jul 7, 2008 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It sounds like we interpret Rudy's comments differently
and have different expectations of what an athlete my say in response to a question. Rudy was asked about a possible return to Spain and under what conditions that might happen. He could have said only if the earth’s rotation reverses itself. It doesn’t bother me that he aspires to play at least 20 minutes per game, and it bothers me less that he said so. He didn’t say the Blazers had to play him that much or even put a timeline on it. He never said he needs to play those minutes as a rookie (amlmart that’s right right?) from what I can tell. It’s that he wants to play 20 per at some point and if not, he’ll consider his stint unsuccessful and go home. How’s that a bad thing?
If you prefer an athlete just give us the “both teams played hard” routine, then this sort of reaction is totally in line. If you want a player to give you a little perspective, to open up and be honest about his ambitions, goals and decisions, then maybe we ought to lighten up a little ourselves.
You’re somewhat right about Oden being a completely different story, and you’re reasons showed that you’re thinking about these things. What’s the deal, then, with you short-changing Rudy, not giving him any credit or even the least benefit of the doubt? You give it to Oden, sure, and maybe with good reason. But, the fact is that Rudy’s actually done more than Oden at this point. He’s accomplished much more as a pro than Oden, and he would be paid more than Oden if he chose not to come over. Even though Oden’s a completely different story, they’re still comparable. Their situations are similar and different. They are comparable in a number of ways, so it is appropriate at times to compare them.

by hobobob on Jul 7, 2008 4:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
at times yes
it is appropriate, but that doesnt mean this time. Oden has never muttered a single word of anything resembling demand. He is grateful for what the blazers have done for him and he is sincerely apologetic for getting injured (although apologies not required).
Rudy has spun his situation so that he feels like the blazers owe him something (playing time) for taking less money. He says he isn’t losing money, just making less, but I see right through his BS. He is too cocky for a scrawny 19 year-old spaniard, who hasnt played a single minute in this league.
I am starting to hope that rudy gets punished hard in his first nba games, ends up a bust and goes back to spain after one season. He says its a dream to play in the NBA and that is why he passed up a bigger contract, but his words about playing time make it seem like he is here for the money. If he were truly here for the love of the game his attitude would be to work hard and earn those 20+ minutes, because they are certainly there for the taking.

Hey genius,
I hope you weren’t one of those people hyping up Rudy this entire year, because if you were, then you are nothing but a hypocrite. Regardless, you seem to be forgetting the fact that RUDY ISN’ T A TYPICAL NBA ROOKIE! NBA ROOKIES OUT OF COLLEGE AREN’T FACED WITH THE CHOICE OF GIVING UP MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN ORDER TO PLAY IN THE NBA! Rudy is basically saying, show me the minutes, or show me the door, (and the money). You ought to get off your high horse and thank your lucky stars that Rudy is the kind of guy who’s willing to give up guaranteed bigtime bucks in order to realize his dream, and that this kind of a talent is coming to play for the blazers. Do you think Gilbert types would ever do what Rudy did? And you deign to call him cocky when he went COMPLETELY against the grain of a typical sports star? Think about all the angles before you speak.

After his contract is up...
...it is well within Rudy’s rights to do whatever the hell he wants to do, and I don’t see any reason we should begrudge him that right.
ALL HE IS SAYING, if he doesn’t get to play very much or if he isn’t very good, he’ll end up going back to Spain someday and make more money there (and get to play more). What’s wrong with that? That is true for 100.000% of NBA players in the league—if they don’t get to play much or aren’t very good, they’ll go where they can play or can make more money. This is doubly true for a Euro with an established, and successful, foreign career.
He isn’t dictating that he NEEDS those minutes. He seems to realize he’ll need to earn them and learn the NBA game. But realistically, he’s saying that if he isn’t very good, he goes back to Spain. That earns a big DUH to anyone paying attention.
While he’s locked into the 1st round rookie scale, he ain’t going nowhere, 20 mpg or not.
And the fact remains, if he sucks he won’t play that much and if he’s good he’ll play a lot. Whatever Rudy says doesn’t affect that, and he hasn’t said anything about that anyways. I doubt 20 mins will be enough for a good player like Rudy, in the long run, anywhos.
Why are you so aggressive, here and elsewhere?

anyone who reads the opening post here can come away with anything but the fact that rudy is threatening to leave protland if he doesnt get the minutes. For the last time, IT IS OK FOR A PLAYER TO THINK THAT HE SHOULD GET GOOD MINUTES BUT IT IS NOT OK FOR A PLAYER TO SAY PUBLICLY THAT HE WILL LEAVE TOWN IF HE DOESNT GET THE MINUTES HE WANTS
That is such a selfish thing to do. It is true that 100% will likely go play in another country if they dont make it here, but I dont hear them saying “im out of this place if I dont get what i want”...cocky little punk

Obviously turning down 30 million net and leaving his home country where he is beloved by all, was all just part of his sinister plan to manipulate p-town into playing him 20+ minutes per game. I find this talk about Rudy demanding, threatening 20 minutes absurd. In fact, it would serve both the Blazers and Rudy well if Rudy left the Blazers this year assuming the he plays same amount as Sergio. It just means Rudy sucked just as bad as Sergio and him leaving would create more cap space.
Rudy left millions of dollars to play in PDX, the last thing I would call him is selfish. The guy is a competitor and has confidence in his abilities, this is why he’s in the NBA.

well,
we’ll certainly find out whether Rudy has the mettle to go against the best of the best, as he’s likely to get the unenviable draw of playing against K*be when Team USA comes knocking on Spain’s door. So hold your tongue for at least a month, PAE, and then you’ll find out whether Rudy can withstand “physical nba play”. Good grief, you don’t see guys like Calderon, Gasol, Scola, Nowitzki, Ginobili, etc etc just falling off the NBA map do you?

by PippenAintEasy on Jul 8, 2008 10:15 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
For the comparison's sake
Those others (Darko, Skiti, Vasquez) never did what Rudy did over in Europe, and were drafted based on a blind hope they’d realize their potential. They were either workout warriors (Skita), had great size and moved well (Darko), or had nice skill but weren’t that great even over in Europe (Vasquez). There’s a lot of dumb reasons so many Euros have been drafted high, and then failed…
But they were different from Rudy, because Rudy has become perhaps the best player in Europe at a very young age and he has a good mix of BBIQ, passing, and athletic scoring (along with being a great shooter). It’s just different.
Comparing Rudy to a Skita or Korolev is like comparing ODEN to Kwame or Kandi-Man. They’re just different in every way.

Agreed
Almost all (likely all, but I don’t want to do the research to back it up) of the foreign players who have been successful in the NBA were productive players either on their club team and/or their national team before coming over. The busts like Darko were drafted solely on potential. Perhaps the NBA scouts should have taken the hint that since their club teams weren’t giving Darko much run that he wasn’t all that great.

Somehow the numbers are being lost here
There are 96 minutes of normal guard play (and more if some small lineups are used). Roy get 33-36 of them. That leaves 60 minutes for Blake, Rudy and Bayless or 20 minutes each. The guy that is frozen out is Sergio unless Blake is traded. Sergio might not even get to practice with the White team. Seriously though – is 20 minutes for Rudy a reasonable goal? I say absolutely. I hope he really wants 40. No NBA player wants to rest on the bench (at least they won’t be an NBA player at the end of his contract). I want them all to compete for every minute, iron sharpening iron and making each other better.
KP says Rudy will play. KP owns this league. David Stern is just keeping the chair warm. KP says. KP gets. Rudy will play. End of story.
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."
by lee3022 on Jul 7, 2008 10:21 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
hell yeah
we want every player competing for every minute they can get their hands on. But what we dont want is every player threatening to leave the team if they dont get their minutes.
here is my interpretation of the interpretation of rudys interview: “if i am not playing 20 minutes, ill probably go back to spain”
Here is what that would sound like coming from steve blake: “if i dont get 20 minutes, I want to be traded”
every time we here a player demanding a trade they are pinned as a bad guy. For good reason.
by PippenAintEasy on Jul 8, 2008 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Once again: HE DID NOT ISSUE AN ULTIMATUM FOR 20 MINUTES!!!
He said, in today’s American English: “If the time comes and I haven’t adapted, or if they aren’t gonna give me minutes, I can always return to Spain. That’s not a step backwards as far as I’m concerned.”
Get the idea of a “play me 20 minutes or else” ultimatum out of your head—that is NOT what El Swisho said.
