Crazy Golden State Fans
This was a proposed trade on the Golden State of Mind sports blog. While it doesn't quite compare to some of the more ridiculous trades some of the BlazersEdge members have come up with, it still leaves a little to be desired on Portland's side.
http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2008/7/5/565386/greg-oden-movement
He is obviously a little green with envy at the Blazer's prospects next year, and who can fault him. However, even the most jealous fan, or blind homer, could see (as several other GSOM members did) that this trade is simply unrealistic.

This is actually a 2nd Greg post on GSOM
the vast majority of GSOMers recognize the trade as a joke (that community knows hoops very well on the whole), but there’s at least 2 people on drugs.

I see that a few Bedgers
have had their say… Dheepan got to present The Isiah Award again. :-) Sabonis4ever announced that “Greg Oden sucks”. I think we need to give him a time out for violating the “do not trash your own players on a blog for another team” rule. (he forgot to use the sarcasm font.)

In that guys defense,
He gave up just about everything he could to justify getting Oden. A lot of ‘traders’ don’t have the foresight to include multiple 1st round picks with the junk (albeit lottery protected), and he had himself convinced that the Blazers were filling needs with the trade.
He just couldn’t quite get the rose colored glasses off before he posted.

Oden
I know I’m going to get absolutely scorched for this post, but here goes…
Although the Warrior fan’s proposal was silly, I’m not so sure that at this point in time Pritchard would scoff at any offer for Oden that did NOT involve a Tier 1 player (i.e. LeBron, Howard, Paul etc.)
Until Oden plays an effective minute in the NBA, there have to be some lingering questions in the minds of Blazer brass as to just how good – and durable – his career will be. There are a number of red flags that indicate potential trouble:
(1) Although an imposing physical specimen, questions about his health just won’t go away. One lingering concern about the knee is not that it happened, but how. We still have not heard a definitive explanation of what caused the knee injury that led a 19-yr old superman to receive microfracture surgery. Was it “Dance-Dance Revolution”, getting up off a couch, a light jog, or playing against scrubs in summer league? None of the possible explanations we’ve heard adequately explain how a freakishly strong kid – whose knee had been deemed “pristine” in pre-draft examinations – damaged it to such an extent that a procedure as radical as microfracture was indicated.
The microfracture itself is yet another question mark. Recovery from this type of surgery is still somewhat uncertain. Yes, I know that he’s young but until he subjects that knee to the repeated pounding of an NBA season, doubts will persist.
(2) The actual level of on-court production that can be reasonably expected is still very much unknown. Certainly, as a freshman (albeit one with a bum wrist) he hardly blew away the NCAA with his 15.7 pts, 9.6 rebs and 3.3 blocks per game. Nice numbers, for sure, but a little underwhelming for a guy that has been heralded as the next Bill Russell since he was in junior high.
His performance in last year’s summer league also raises some concerns. 19 points and 19 fouls in two games before being shut down was either indicative of a player struggling with swollen tonsils or one on the very steep end of the NBA learning curve.
On the plus side, his performance in the NCAA Finals against an NBA-ready Florida front line was certainly impressive, but it was only one game. A portent of his NBA career or merely the game of a lifetime? For Blazerfan’s sake, I certainly hope it’s the former and not the latter.
Unless Pritchard, McMillan, Allen and the Blazer brass are privy to knowledge that the rest of us are not, publicly available information would seem to indicate that there is still sufficient cause for concern and that the Blazers would not immediately hang up the phone were another team to call inquring about Oden. I agree it would have to be a pretty sweet offer, yet one that included a serviceable big man (on the level of, say, a Kaman or a Chandler) along with a Tier 2 talent and a Number 1 pick or two might just get it done.
Okay, flame away….

not too bad, but
If one has a bigman with even a modest chance of being a franchise bigman, then one doesnt trade him for chris kaman, tier 2 talent, and the 20th overall pick in next years draft. They are simply too rare to trade for anyhting less than another great big man.

I agree with (1) completely
but (2) I disagree with. Averaging 16/10/3 with your off hand on a team that is perimeter oriented and rarely involves you in the offense if pretty damn good. Oden shot 61.6% and only took 9 shots per game. Had his hand been healthy and they invloved him in the offense more he would have been a 20/10 player.
Oden’s Freshman numbers are better than Shaq, Duncan, Robinson, Hakeem, Ewing and Mourning’s freshman numbers.

I agree completely
His freshman numbers compared to those Hall of Famers are very encouraging.
And it’s not as if the former HoF big man played poorly, or that he was in a weak conference or something. He was very, very, very good for a FRESHMAN 7 footer. Those types aren’t usually good that early on, and are much more raw.
Oden has a ton of value, injury or no injury. I believe the team when they say he’s healthy now. I really really like that they’ve been so careful with him… and that may be the key to Oden having a healthy career. If KP and Friends had doubts, they aren’t tipping their hand. Oden is un-tradeable for what he MEANS to the fanbase, and his potential alike.
Because of those reasons, I wouldn’t even trade him for Howard. Oden played smarter, better FT shooter, is bigger/longer/stronger and more athletic before the injury, and if the Blazers know he is maintaining his athleticism than it’s a no brainer. Oden already had a decent hook shot, and Howard still justs beasts people—but beasts he does. Howard can’t pass, but he’s very young and will be a great center for a very long time.
I just think Oden, IF HEALTHY, is a better version of Howard. And only the Blazers know if he’s healthy or not… and if he wasn’t, perhaps we’d see feelers be reported to other teams. Any argument I give or others give is academic until we KNOW Oden is healthy, so it’s kinda a silly thing for us to debate (and I peeked into one of the threads this fanpost is referencing, and it turned into a ‘how good will Oden be” debate, which to me is one of the most pointless debates around. If healthy, he’s awesome. If not, who the hell knows?). I can’t wait till we “know”...

Here is an encouraging writeup I read on Oden on RealGM:
“Oden put up like 16/10 throughout the year on one hand, with DOMINANT defense, absolutely dominating defense, defensive instincts like very few have exhibited, and size and athleticism to go with it.
He scored a really efficient 15.5 with his left hand, his team was great, he filled his role on the glass and as a dominant force defensively.
Then, his team couldn’t do anything on their own in the championship game, so what did he do? He dominated an excellent defensive team with the best big man depth in college ball, two high lotto picks(Horford, rookie of the year runner up and 3rd pick, Noah, the 9th pick, an athletic, energetic 7 footer known for defense, Chris Richard a rotation player, nice energy, strength, solid defender, and Corey Brewer, who was an excellent perimeter defender and was doubling down on Oden on almost every play, and even some Maurice Speights, who is a top 20 pick this year)
He dropped 25/12(10/15 66% for those keeping count) and 4 blocks on them, while completely dominating the paint on both ends(Horford 6-15, Noah 1-3).
He didn’t dominate offensively all year because he didn’t need to, and he was hurt, he did his job, and when his team needed him, he stepped up, but the shooters killed them, they couldn’t shoot, and Florida was hot.
Oden was clearly a dominant force in college basketball, which is why he was first team all american, on one hand.”

solid take knickfan
Your unbiased views are a huge asset to BlazersEdge.
1) Blazers management knows more about the extent of his injury than we do. How willing KP would be to trade him (and what the price would be) depends strongly on how confident they are that he’s 100%.
2) The on court production is indeed unknown. However, he put up those stats (which compare favorably to the frosh stats of the best centers ever) with one good wrist. Summer league means nothing. Nothing. Is it possible he’ll be a disappointment? Absolutely. However, the upside is still massive.
3) I still think it would take a tier 1 talent to pry Oden away from KP, unless they are more worried about his knee than they are letting on.

Thank you
For bringing some non homer related thoughts to BEdge.
However, I completely disagree.
While I don’t disagree that say Kaman, 2 1sts and say Maggette (if he was still a Clip) would peak our interest, you cant trade a player the draft was named after before he sets a foot on the court. Nothing to gain from trading him and everything to lose. Now if he turns out to only be a decent player after one year then maybe you ship him off, but I get the feeling that Pritchard feels like he is part of the foundation and that it would take a monumental collapse for us to trade him. Of course we fan’s have ALWAYS felt like that and will continue to do so, but while KP loves GO, he has to think of the franchise first and foremost, players second.
I remember the good old days. The Rasta Monsta days.

I too have some doubts
that only seeing him play for a season will erase. Oden’s body is the only unknown. He has the size, athleticism and drive to be an unstoppable force in the NBA.
In regards to (1) is having one leg one inch longer than the other to blame? I could believe that is why his back has issues. Which leg has the knee injury, the shorter one or the longer? I think that he had surgery on the medial aspect of his knee, not the lateral side did he not? It would make sense that the longer leg would naturally have greater stresses placed upon the medial side. The shorter leg, the lateral. Has anyone explored this and which leg is longer?
Also can this all be fixed with training and a simple shoe implant?

Frankly, I'm embarrassed by some of the comments left over there.
Some have been good, but too many of them have left the impression that Blazers’ Edge is full of the type of fans we think L[xxx]r fans are. It makes me sad.

yep
We need to do a better job of keeping it classy. One unreasonable trade idea does not merit comments like “you GS fans are crazy.” The GSOM community is knowledgeable and they policed themselves on that post—the vast majority of them knew it was an unbalanced trade.
Blazer fans were upset at some of the Blog-a-Bull folks calling us homers during the Aldridge for Rose discussion (a trade idea which in my opinion is not as crazy as the GS idea but Paxon would still hang up quickly), and there was even a trade idea of Travis+Martell+13 for Rose which is on the same level as the GS trade.
We need to be consistent. If its not ok for Bulls fans to call Blazers fans homers, than it isn’t ok for us to call GS fans homers.
This is a passionate, dedicated, intelligent community that I’m honored to be a part of. We’re better than this.

In general,
I think the Bedgers that posted on that thread acquitted themselves pretty well. For every “GS fans are crazy” post, there was a post from a fellow Bedger apologizing for the rudeness of the previous post. I don’t think it matters whether or not we apologize on others’ fanboards for rudeness from fellow Bedgers. It doesn’t hurt to do so, but I think that as long as we are not rude, there shouldn’t be any issue of “hating on blazers fans” or anything like that. Essentially, what I’m saying is that hate is gonna be there regardless, if a fan is consistently not a homer, then it’s ok to point out other teams’ fans when they are being homers.

My worry
Is that since we’re one of the larger online fanbases (if not the largest and most vocal) of a NBA team, some will get worked into a frenzy by the team being so good and go around taunting everyone or being really cocky overall. We can see some hints at that already, and we haven’t even been a 9th seed yet.
I wouldn’t be surprised if while most of us remain classy (and having Dave and Henry Abott as Official-Non-Official Representatives of Blazer Fandom helps), the most vocal group will be the annoying people we see sprout up from time to time here, especially when good things happen. They wanna attach their ego and sense of self worth to a good team of course, and then rub it in the faces of less fortunate fans.
If we think it’s kinda annoying now, wait till we ARE good. Yeesh…
I don’t lose sleep over it, but I’m pretty sure that’s how it’ll go down. I’ll do my part to fight it by suggesting we not be such unsportsmanline fans and to remember how we were just a few short years ago and that we didn’t like good teams’ fans rubbing their success in our faces, and blah blah blabbity blah. It probably won’t work, but what can ya do. People are annoying.
Even if those types are less than 1% of our online family, we’re such a large group that the 1% of annoying people will seem a lot more, and as the squeaky wheel gets the grease, the annoying fan gets to take the face for his team. That’s perhaps the best allegory ever in the history of the universe. Did I use allegory right? Even if I didn’t, it’s such a good allegory that it will bend the actual definition of allegory to its will, forever changing how everyone looks at and uses allegories.
Those of us who realize that this will be a problem will do our best however, but with victories comes a price.
