Ex-Lakes

Hello Blazer's Edge, I am new to the Blazer nation.  I use to be a Laker fan, but seeing what the Blazers have done the last few years I can not help but get excited for the great city of Portland.  I was born and raised a laker fan, so I may be shuned from my family but I think it is a chance worth taking. I finally can cheer for a team in my own state.

Being a life long Packer fan I have learned to take the good years with the bad, i am just lucky enough to join when things are looking up. I have also learned to hate rivals (vikings) as it may take a while I am sure my hatered for the Lakers will grow with each passing year.

For those of you who think I am just jumping on the bandwagon I can assure you I am doing this for life.  Why would I stop rooting for a team that just made the finals and seems poised to do it again (if it werent for the Blazers who are going to stop them). I am going to bleed black and red as I do green and gold.  If you only knew what kind of packer fan I am, I am sure you all will be happy with kind of fan you are getting.

I can not wait for this season to start and see how all the pieces of this puzzle fit. Thank you all and GO BLAZERS.

Huh?

Sounds a lot like a bandwagon fan to me. I am positive not all on Blazer’s Edge will share my sentiment, but I would just as rather you go back on cheering for the Lakers than latching onto the Blazer’s fanbase. I can’t stand bandwagon fans, and Lkers fans in particular drive me crazy. However, I can’t stop you from being a Blazer’s fan, so all I can ask of you is that you make this your new permanent address. No more switching to another up-and-coming team, you must stay a Blazer’s fan for the rest of your life.

Well, in my defense...

Bandwagon fans are a sensitive subject for me. After years of getting taunted at High School for supporting the Blazers, they finally started to look like they could win at all. And, poof, sudden;y there were Blazers fan all over the school. I can’t help the way I feel. But I guess I could extend an apology to The pack is back, one less Laker fan and one more Blazers fan can’t be that much of a bad thing in the long run.

I totally agree!

It irks me when people jump on the bandwagon too after I stuck with the team for so long. I don’t mind so much when Portlanders jump on, but outsiders both me a lot.

On the other hand, I recognize that the team does need more fans and new fans. I can’t expect to continue going to games and seeing an empty upper deck of the Rose Garden like 2005. The added fanbase breeds excitement and helps our players enjoy playing for the Blazers.

Plus, the team’s lack of success was not the sole impetus to change Blazer culture. The transition occurred because many fans in Portland were simply not proud to be Blazer fans anymore (and stopped spending money on the team, of course). A lot of the changes we have seen may not have happened if the team didn’t lose so much support. I have come to the realization that the fairweather fans had some tiny, indirect part in shaping this team. Thus, although it’s painful for those of us who always believed this team, we need to learn to accept the bandwagoners. And in the end, I console myself with the knowledge that I’m going to appreciate any future success that much more than the average Joe because I remember the details of the Jail Blazers era.

Something similar happened in Boston this year when after years of screwing the fans (Roy for Telfair, anyone?) over Ainge finally put together a team the city can be proud of. There were a TON of new Celtics jerseys all over Boston that I never saw two years ago. A fan can’t be faulted for abandoning a team because the management made absolutely horrible decisions, and then jumping back on when the team was rebuilt with character guys who actually had some skill.

However, the moratorium in Boston to jump on the bandwagon is over. All the fans who started rooting for the Celtics after June 1 should not be allowed into the garden. Similarly, in Portland fans who want to root for this team need to start now. I want no part of the guy who buys a Roy jersey and WCF tix after not going to a game all season.

Fairweather fan

I dont concider myself a fairweather fan. As a Packer fan I went to every home game the year they were 4-12 and cheered for them as if they were about to win the superbowl. I know the trials that come with bad teams, the heartache.
We have no idea how this team will turn out it could be like the Bulls, all that talent then just tank. I hope it is not like that but if it is I am still a fan I will support them from now on. The Bazers are my NBA Packers. And if you only knew how I feel about the Packers>

Can't he be excited for the Blazers?

And what if he did come in after the Blazers got really good? Maybe even won a championship or two? This kind of talk, like in your above post, is no different to me than fan discrimination. I see it as a form of age discrimination, with the fan’s age being how long they have been a Blazers’ fan.

Maybe this isn’t what you intended to say, but it is the way I heard it.

I just don't like it...

when people jump from one NBA team to another. Or when they only follow a team when they are actually good and then forget about them during rebuilding years. It’s a pretty common pet peeve in the sports world.

In reality, it’s not really a big deal either way, and I am aware of that. But I figure if I’m going to post here I might as well do it passionately.

The Midnight Rambler

by amlmart1 on Jul 7, 2008 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

It's kind of a grey area...

As fans we also are never actually part of the professional sports teams we root for, yet I see the word “we” being thrown around to describe the Blazers here quite often. I think this, and the adverse bandwagon feelings some have, are a result of fan culture that gets created. Members of this culture feel, in a figurative (and probably subconscious) way that they become a small part of the team, and that creates a sense of unity among us. Thus, for some, when “outsiders” attempt to “join the team” it is offensive because they haven’t experienced rooting for the team, and thus haven’t “paid their dues” to enter into fandom. From this perspective, it would almost be like trying to join a fraternity, yet not refusing to do any of the initiation rituals. Others aren’t quite as uptight about things and feel like it’s not a big deal.

Is one viewpoint better than another? Inherently, no. One is based on the idea that as fans we are not really part of the team, and thus have no right to criticize someone for joining in, and the other viewpoint is based on the idea that fans become part of their own “team” and one must pay dues to enter, like those before him/her.

Welcome

As a packer/blazer fan for life, I can tell you it’s a pretty awesome combo of fandom. I don’t care about bandwagon or not, one less l*ker fan and one more blazer fan is a win in my book. As long as your love for the blazers is authentic, welcome!

by sixth on Jul 5, 2008 6:42 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, the pack is back is a friend of mine and the subject of the recent

Blazer Missionary post. He has willingly turned over his Kobe jersey to me.

He is certainly the type of fan you want rooting for our team. He was inconsolable after Brett Favre announced his retirement. If he ends up loving Brandon Roy as much as he does Favre I’d be concerned that he would try to interrupt the game to give Roy a hug.

The pack is a good guy…. give him a chance. He did buy some 100 level tickets for us to go the last home game of the year so he can’t be all bad.

by tweener on Jul 5, 2008 8:15 PM PDT reply actions

Absolutely welcome!

In the dark times, the Blazers were hurting for fans, and those who remained held that fact as a badge of honor. Now that the Blazers are showing promise, and people are starting to pull for them, I think those guys do get a little jealous. I can understand, because they held with the team through some very thin years.

However, when the dark era arrived, I myself cashed in my Blazer fandom for a half-eaten bologna sandwich. I pretty much missed the 2000 run because of it. But around 2006, the team really started to turn their image around, starting with one Brandon Roy. This kid alone made me remember all the Blazer games long past that I had spent with my grandfather, listening to the Schonz on the radio. He was the guy who was going to change everything, and so far, he has exceeded my expectations.

So, welcome aboard. If some don’t like you because of where you came from, that is their loss. Every Blazer fan is a welcome Blazer fan, no matter how new you are.

I have a question for you so that we may all know you better. What was your favorite moment in a L@ker/Blazer Game last year.

Mine was one in which Roy was playing and it was near the end of the quarter and both teams were determined to score. I don’t recall who had the last possession but I recall Kobe being stopped by Roy and on the other end of the court Roy took it right at Kobe settling for a lay-in at the rim. Man that was sweet.

Welcome to the good side

Although I have a question:
Tell me honestly, did you ever feel at one point that you were a laker fan “for life?”
According to the rules of fandom, because you were born/live in Portland, you should have been rooting for the Blazers all along. HOWEVER, because your parents raised you as a Laker fan, you hold allegience to both your team and your parents (it’s in the Bible!)
But my point is, if you ever felt that you would be a “laker fan for life” then we can’t really trust that you will be a Blazer fan for life, as you say.
I’m not judging or shunning you, because I always love another convert to the Blazers side. I just want the facts to be clear about your rooting interests.

The good side

Both my parents grew up in Southern Cal and I still have a lot of family down there, so I guess because of them I was a fan, and lets be honest Portland has had some pretty bad teams not bad on the court but off the court and thats what I cant stand. So when they started to turn the team around I started to respect them more and more. Ill just say it is finally nice to be able to say I am a Blazer fan. Cause I love Oregon and Portland and will be proud to root for them against the lakers. I am for real>

by The pack is back on Jul 5, 2008 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

But see, this is my point

You grew up in Portland, and didn’t root for the Blazers because they were bad. Now that they’re getting to be good again (both on and off the court), you are jumping ship. See why people are calling you bandwagon?
And you never answered my question, how strong was your love for the L*kers? Because if you grew up loving them and are now leaving them even after they went to the finals, we can’t really trust your love for the Blazers.

The inbound to McGinnis, drives, stops, pumps, shoots, short, no good...AND THE GAME IS OVER! ~ Bill Schonely

by SandbergOnSports on Jul 6, 2008 12:17 PM PDT up reply actions

dude,

That’s not exactly a fair question to ask. If the guy says he didn’t have strong passion for the L*kers, then you could say that you don’t trust his ability to love the blazers strongly and is a bandwagon fan, and if he had a strong passion for the lakers, then you could say that he’s being unfaithful.

by premthegrem on Jul 6, 2008 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

If you're going to bag on him for not loving the Blazers enough,

then bag on me too. I gave up on the team around the ‘96 or ‘97 season, and didn’t really look back until Brandon Roy showed up. My love for the team is no where near as strong as some of the people here, and still may be even less than The Pack Is Back. I don’t think it is fair to require a level of fandom from people before letting them become fans, much less contributors.

Hey Laker Boy

I hope you don’t mind me calling you that. What’s your favorite memory as a Laker fan?

Thanks

I find your avatar erotic.

That's actually a genetic response.

1/10 people (approx.) feel the same way about it. The gene is recessive and located on the x chromosome, so it’s much more likely for men then women (just like color-blindness)

Can you roll your tongue? 75% of people with the “erotic” response to my avatar can also roll their tongues.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
