Waiting Game
Following up on a post yesterday, how real is the Darius Miles situation? If this guy is serious about playing, and if some Managers have devilish attitudes, the Blazer books could have some legitimate troubles headed their way.
Right now we have "money burning a hole in our pocket" so-to-speak. This summer should bring us some incredible talent to be evaluated, but yet we don't necessarily have to fill that last open roster spot. However, every one of us has an idea on what to do with that spot, a.k.a money in the pocket. My question is, how do we utilize that last open roster spot to our advantage... all things considered?
I'm wondering if by not signing someone, would it give us some sort of financial le-way in the case Miles does get 20 games with another team? If so, would it benefit us to wait till the last minute and let the Miles thing play out over the summer?
I may be a little over-concerned about the star of "The Perfect Score," but I don't want anything jeopardizing our cap space.<!-- TOKEN_1215279546949_TOKEN -->

Doc, I'm not worried about Miles.
An independent doctor said he was done. I don’t think any GM would sign him and play him if he obviously couldn’t play just to mess with the Blazers salary cap.
Whoever our 15th man is, he won’t be paid anywhere near Miles’ salary so I don’t think that would make much of a difference.
We also do not need Miles' salary cap
for 2009. However it helps and saves luxury tax as well. (This based upon several options available then which might not be used.)
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."
Agent diplomacy
this is mere speculation, but I’m guessing that GM’s will give Darius a workout to just appease Miles agent, Jeff Weschler. GM’s will play I’ll scrath your back if you scratch mine with agents and vice versa. Just a thought.
Gimmicks don't make dynasties
The main thing was to get him off the roster
and free up a spot. Extra cap space would be gravy, but not essential.
I look at our roster and I really wonder what waiting a couple of years won’t gives us that a big free agent signing will.
I’m just not that convinced that the fabled veteran free agent is our ticket to glory…
Koponen
Sign Petteri Koponen he could be our point guard of the future
Not worried
“Career-ending injuries” aren’t just doled out willy nilly. As much as teams would enjoy sticking it to the Blazers, many are over the cap to start with and won’t be adding a 15th man out of spite. I really think that the only way Darius gets picked up is if it is an attempt to handicap our cap space, but a team would only do that if we were targeting their player and we’ve been pretty silent on that type of thing for the 2009 free agents. Also, KP and TP have been scheming on this for way longer than us, and I’m sure they have some great legal maneuvers ready to go if things go sideways. And finally, if another GM thinks they can screw us over without consequence they’ve had their head in the sandbox. KP and TP are incredibly active communicators with probably as good, if not better, information on proposed trades/maneuvers etc., and are fully capable of throwing monkey wrenches in another team’s plans for free agent signings, trades, etc. if they have taken hostile action towards the Blazers.
