Assemble Your Own Blazer Team Day 3: Small Forwards

Here's your chance to add a small forward to your mad scientist's brew of all-time Blazers.  If you're not sure what this is about, check the first two days' posts below, covering centers and power forwards.  In a nutshell:

  • You're building a team of eight rotation players from all-time Blazers.
  • Your team gets the benefit of the Blazer years for each player plus all years thereafter, but not before.
  • Each day there's a choice of three players.  The players you pass over will NOT be available to you again, so choose wisely.
  • If the player you want at a position isn't listed, just wait instead of complaining!  It's a sure bet he'll come around on a later day.
  • Keep track of your choices each day.  After it's all said and done you can share your team and speculate why you made the best choices.
  • Clyde Drexler is injured and won't be able to suit up.  Plan accordingly.

Today we're looking at small forwards.  The three choices are:  Jerome Kersey, Scottie Pippen, or Kiki Vandeweghe.

Register your pick in the comment section below.  Have fun!

Kersey

the dude was a beast, and i know we might need 3 point shooting, but Kersey’s hustle is too good to pass up on. Now Pip or Vandeweghe in their primes would’ve been great, but since we can’t have their skill sets before they became blazers, its gotta be Kersey

Tough choice

If its the whole career it would be a no brainer but Pip still brought some terrific play while he was here. In fact, I think he’s my guy because he still had multiple years of great D, great leadership and the ability to handle the basketball at times.

I loved Jerome (one of the first Blazers I became a huge fan of), but Pip’s leadership is too much for me to ignore.

All three!!!

OK I know I can only chose one. Kiki could shot. Mercy,Mercy did all the intangables, rebound, defend, shot, steal, block. Pippen could do that and more; pass.

No easy choice. I’ll go with Jerome because I remember the battles with Xavier McDaniels of the (former) Sonics. Those we some good hard battles.

Sorry Scottie and Kiki.

Mercy Mercy Jerome Kersey

The man they created the Hustle Board for. Who doesn’t want diving for loose balls, an outside jumper, steals, fastbreaking, winning jump balls, flipping upside down in the air and landing on his head with nary a scratch, and pushing MJ in the finals of the slam dunk competition?

Easy choice.

Koponen - PG of the future. Book it.

by Blazerholic on Jul 30, 2008 11:29 PM PDT reply actions

It's gotta be Kersey.

Pippin’s out because, while he was still great, he was on the downside of his career. We’d only get a few seasons from him based on the rules for this vote.

Kiki was an amazing scorer but really didn’t bring much else and never really took his teams anywhere (unless I’m forgetting something).

Jerome worked hard, got better as he aged, always dove for loose balls, and left everything on the court. He may (or may not) be the third best of the three players listed, but grew up in the Blazer system and we’d have him and his energy for years.

This is an easy one.

Dave-so drexler will never be an available option?

Dave-clarification question on your drexler comment. He is not in this round, but are you saying that he will not be coming up at all….or just not this round.

Dave has said from the beginning that Clyde is unavailable throughout

That would be too easy.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Yah

I thought about putting Clyde in there but then that obliterated the shooting guard choices and thereby pushed 3 deserving players (between the superfluous guys lined up next to Clyde and the guy who got bumped to the later rounds and displaced someone else) out of contention. Since it would be a landslide anyway, and thus quite boring and not at all discussion-provoking, I decided for these purposes Clyde was injured…or a Rocket already…and couldn’t play. So he’ll never be a choice and you have to choose the rest of your team accordingly.

How about Clyde at the 3?

I always wondered, like everyone, if Clyde and Jordan could have co-existed in a starting line-up. Now we can wonder if Roy and Drexler could be a strong 2-3 punch…

This one is easy

Jerome “Mercy” Kersey is a beast! From the first day of training camp he was my favorite player and he played the socks off of those other guys in Blazer uniforms.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

thanks for the clarification

JK-This is the toughest choice yet. When Kiki was in his prime he would light up like fire…but he dropped off sharply in latter years. Pip could do it all, but limited window. JK was the hussle man and had longevity. Jerome is my man. .By the way ..I ran in to Detlef Schrimpf at the Adidas employee store last week. He was looking pretty gaunt…very thin. Kersey

The Blazers finally picked Kersey over Kiki and they made the right choice. I will follow suit.

Pippen is the obvious choice if including pre-Blazer career but he only had one great year in Portland and his body just broke down after that. Kersey just does everything and would have been a good player in Ramsay’s offense along with Walton and Lucas (after his work with Petrie on his shot of course.)

Walton, Lucas, Kersey…

and it’s not even a contest. He was one of my favorite players from those years, I loved his heart and drive. Plus his was the first Blazer autograph I ever got. My dad and I ran into him at a monster truck rally of all places when I was 13 or 14. So I’ve got a poster of Bigfoot (the monster truck, not the beast) with Jerome Kersey’s signature on it because that all we had. How cool is that?

Kersey.

Not the scorer that Kiki was but scored well enough and he did everything else very well. Also one of those “intangibles” guys you just want on your team. He also always stepped it up in post season. Always.

Scottie was never one of my favorite players as great as he was so he never figured in this conversation for me.

Kersey

A scoring and rebounding monster, played super hard, also developed a nice jump shot. Just became a better all-around player than Vandeweghe. Pippen is tempting but I only halfway think of him as a Blazer.

Playing next to Buck Williams he was already excellent; next to Maurice Lucas? Scary.

by jtanzer on Jul 31, 2008 4:21 AM PDT reply actions

tougher than it appears

With Walton and Lucas on the team I’m tempted to go with scoring and outside shooting with Kiki. Imagine having that deadeye available to kick out to from the post!

On the other hand, how can my team lose if the other team doesn’t score? With Walton, Lucas and Kersey the opposition doesn’t get to the basket and doesn’t get a rebound or loose ball AND it’s not like those three don’t know how to put the ball in the basket. I’ll leave the outside game to the back court and subs.

Team LJ thus far: Walton, Lucas, Kersey.

Younger Pippen would be the easy choice, but based on the rules you have to go with heart and hustle! Kiki’s scoring would be nice, but the overall deficiencies in his game (rebounding, defense) make this an easy choice.

This is the toughest yet for me!

Scottie is one of the best all-time players but as a blazer, he is too old for my taste in this game. Without Drexler I want to take Kiki for scoring, otherwise it seems it will rest on the guards (possibly Roy, possibly TP). However Kersey is one of those intangible do it all players any coach would love to have on their team. At this moment (because NO ONE has picked Kiki , i didn’t know besides scoring his all around game was that bad) I am leaning towards the group decision of kersey, but that scoring issue is a concern (who knows maybe oden will break out and become a 20+ a night beast this season as a rookie).

Plus with that great first step, Kiki could drive the ball too.

I’m surprised Mr Vandeweghe hasn’t been selected more. He was much more of a scorer than the other two (at least during their time with the Blazers). The sentimental choice for fans now is Kersey because he is better remembered, but Kiki was hot. Like someone above said, I can’t force the guards to do all the shooting:

Not too tought for me either

My two bigs provide lots of scoring, so Kiki isn’t as enticing. As much as I like what old Scottie brings, having Kersey from when he was young is one of the reasons I have to choose him. That and the toughness that him and Luke would bring to games as a forward duo.

All defense team (so far)

Therefore I’m taking Pippen to go along with Lucas and Oden. Pippen didn’t have as much on his offesive game when he got ot Portland but htat was not his role as Smith wallace and Damon got most of the points. Pippen brings all the intangibles you want including leadership. So even though Kiki was a scorring machine and Kersey was a good blend between the two, I want the solid D with the ability to hit 3s and handle the ball whil emaintaining lock-down D.

If you could get the whole career of Pippen, it would be him and his great team play, no-brainer decision.
Kersey has an awful outside shot, and even though I get less years out of him Kiki still has more production. I need an outside scoring threat with Oden being double-teamed all the time ;-)

On defense, his rebounding isn’t great but decent. And I already have two defensive monsters.

Vandeweghe (what about Bobby Gross?)

With Walton in the middle (doing everything), and Buck defending and rebounding, my team needs outside shooting.

I’d like Kersey’s D, but remember cringing all all the horrible mid-range clangers he threw up.

Pippen reminds me of the Whitsitt years, and I don’t want to remember them.

I like Bobby Gross for the fact that he was able to go toe-to-to with Dr. J, and the team came out on top. The league has more talent at SF right now than any time I can remember, and someone who has shown he can compete, in the finals, with one of the best ever would be a good asset.

This is the one time I can see myself taking a player that will have a short career. Pippen was still a good defender, still a good outside shooter and could play the 1,2, or 3. Also I think the experience of having been on six championship teams could lead a team of youngsters to a championship (so long as they are not the jail Blazers).
