Brandon Roy and the USA Basketball team
Just a thought, I was thinking that Brandon Roy could have made the USA basketball team and gone to the Olympics if he had wanted to, instead he stayed home and decided to try to get better with his team. There is nothing wrong with that, in fact, I respect that he decided to stay home, but I still think he could have made it. I just wanted to know who agrees with me and who doesn't. If you agree or disagree just leave a comment with your answer and your thoughts.

He would need....
..an invitation to join team USA and I don’t think he got one this time around. The next team USA though?? You betta believe it!!! 2012 Olympic team could feature Roy, Oden, and maybe LMA, especially if Nate is still involved.

"...especially if Nate is still involved."
Based on comments he’s made recently, I don’t think he will be. Also (and this is selfish), players that log a bunch of time with the team USA program tend to go through the regular season a little more fatigued (and thus, injury-prone). That’s 3/12 players coming from 1/30 teams. Let’s share that burden with the rest of the league a bit…

He wasn't invited to the 'real' team
Just the practice squad that LMA and Bayless are on.
He definitely coulda’ done it, but I prefer him resting and getting ready for the season. In 2012, he can be on the real team alongside Oden and LMA and everyone.
The players on the real team were invited a few years ago and the invites haven’t changed, I don’t think, so they could create consistency within the team to combat the lack of chemistry the recent losing teams have had.

I heard he was using the summer to finish his degree at the UOW.
And im very thankful hes not over in Beijing breathing that air. Who wants to bet all the olympic team athletes have some nagging breathing issues from this?

Thats no joke
Theres no such thing as clean air in Bejing. They should be wearing oxygen tanks as much as possible.

The air in Beijing
Sure, it’s bad. But it’s breathable. They’re not going to come back as cancerous hags. It’ll be the normal fatigue from some extra Basketball, but the air quality won’t haunt them.

Helium
is breathable, but you can’t live off of it.
Marijuana’s is also a “natural” ingredient to brownies.
My point? pollution is NO laughing matter!
Actually it’s that there have been no scientific studies to determine the harmful effects of smoking breathing the air there. Just to be safe we should really send some canned air with our players.

Select Team
Roy would have tough competition for the US Olympic team.. But there is no reason why he shouldn’t be on the select team or be invited to the select team. He would be the best guard on the select team
by The Dynasty on Jul 30, 2008 5:59 PM PDT 0 recs
He was invited to the select team
He turned it down because he had ‘prior engagements’ or something to that effect, which means he wanted to rest and do other stuff—which I am all for.
In 2012, I’d be shocked if Roy isn’t on the team. He’s perfect for Olympic basketball, and helping manage a team full of allstars.
And by then, that’s what Portland will be.

Maybe we should just send the whole Blazers team in 4 years?
We’d still be better than the ‘04 team at least.
And I’m just kidding- no need to flame my little tootsies off!

I actually think...
that the US should go more to a system like this. sending teams. you could send the NBA champs for example. or you could send the runner-up? or, since all 12 players likely couldn’t play for some reasons (play for other teams, injuries, contract year, etc), then you could blend 12 guys from 2 different teams—how about the two teams that lost in the conference finals? take the top 12 (you can get to agree) from those two teams, send them to the Olympics.
another thought I had that would take away the worry for the NBA team is to use recently retired players. I’m not talking about old-timers, but rather guys in the mid-30s or so. Kind of a reward for a long solid career. think Magic or Clyde or Stockton the year or two after they retired. It would be a great place for those guys who are still competitive and who still want to play, but can’t make it through a full NBA season. Put them on a team that can practice together and do some travelling games against other European teams to get them geared up for the Olympics and World Championships.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

You'd need a team of 18 to
guys those “old” guys breaks after chasing the younger players on the other teams.

Didn't they used to send the starting 5
From the NCAA Championship team? Or were they just talking about it?
I think that would be a great idea, if only there weren’t foreign players in the starting lineups of a lot of teams.

it's a good theory,
but there is no way an owner of an NBA Team would agree to do this.

The less amount of blazers going to the olympics
the better. Sure, it would be nice to send a player to rep our squad in 2012, but really, what is more important?

Olympics
I would like to see college kids getting the chance again. NBA players at the Olympics is getting old…....

I disagree
Its just now getting good… now that many countries have NBA players, it’s becoming an incredibly compelling showcase. If you sent American college kids, they would not be able to compete with seasoned pros from the European leagues.

yea,
as it is, US will have its hands full with Spain. 8-0 says a lot, especially when 2 games were against Argentina.

I just find it tired
I enjoyed watching college kids play hard and rep the country in a way that the NBA players just don’t do. They don’t stay in the village, but rather, they stay in 5 star hotels. It just all seems hokey to me. I’d much rather have the young guys going…......
I also disagree with the notion that the best college kids wouldn’t be able to compete with the seasoned pros from the EL. Our best college kids are ballers, they still (mostly) play team ball and they still have something to prove. They may not win gold every time, but they’d be right up there, IMO.
