I know the NBA officiating sucks at times...
but predicting getting slighted in an imaginary game 7 before the season even begins seems a little over the top. For all we know the Blazers are going to become the golden boys of the NBA and other fans will be complaining that our team gets all the calls.

Yeah, I know it was sarcasm
My point was that fans in the NBA now pretty much expect their teams to get screwed, which is probably not a good thing as it will lead to complaining about the calls no matter how the well (or poorly) the game is officiated. The NBA officiating could stand to improve, yes, but I think a lot of fans make it worse by arguing every borderline calls, when those calls will probably even out over time. As a parallel example, i can’t imagine watching a baseball game and complaining about every borderline ball/strike. Sorry if I’m on a soapbox, I didn’t mean to get so OT.

I would also point out
that the NBA brought it on itself by continuing to allow the All-star call, the make up call, swallowed whistles at the end game situations, and Doneghy. All issues discussed to death but never really addressed by the league.

I agree
The league has made some things worse. Most noticeably we’re still waiting on that independent report examining league officials. Mark Stein mentioned it today on espn.com but other than that, we haven’t heard anything in a while. Makes me wonder why it’s being kept under wraps for so long…
Link:http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3509550
My point was just that there’s plenty of blame to be spread to the league and to the fans. Sorry for droning on, just a pet peeve of him.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
50 wins.
1st round of playoffs, but if we win that round we’ll make it to the 2nd round. Provided we find victory in our corner, I think we’ll make it to the WCF. If we get a few lucky whistles and a few lucky bounces, the Finals will be in our near future. If we make it to the finals, I dunno! I hope we win!
We’ll be the proverbial ‘team no one wants to face’, no matter what our record is.
Oden will start every game he plays.
I can’t predict what deals will go down, if any. A deal will happen before or during the season if it is a good one!

I’m gonna take your predictions outside and curb ‘em, I will I will!
If they only win 2 more games it’s because they’re so gassy, since Rudy and Sergio keep on making refried beans and burritos for everyone and no one wants to hurt their feelings and not eat it.

I was only off by 1 last year
I in all honesty don’t expect Oden to start more than 50 games. He’s never even started a preseason game.
Can Rudy, Sergio, and Bayless make up for the loss of Jack in the first few months of the season? – Real answers please, not Jack hate.
I think the Blazers are going to start slow then when everyone knows their role and gets acclimated; Sergio will get traded and Oden will get hurt.
There is a chance they can make the playoffs because I don’t think it will take 50 wins this year.

Optimism is rational
-How many games will the Blazers win this year? 57
-How far will they go in the playoffs? WC Finals
-How many games will Greg Oden start? 72
-Will there be any more transactions before the season begins? No
-Will there be any transactions between the beginning of the season, and the trade deadline? Yes
-Who will be the Blazer’s MVP? Roy, of course, but with strong contributions from LMA, Grampa Oden, “the kid” Bayless, and Trout
Other
-Blazers will be one of the most (if not the most) balanced teams in the league
-Roy will average 23/7
-Bayless will average 12 (trending up later in the season)
-Rudy will average 8 (also trending up)
-Oden will average 17/9/2
-LMA will average 19/7
-Frye will step up as one of the best reserve big men in the league
-Webster and Trout will take a step forward offensively but continue to struggle a little defensively, which will be the Blazers only real weakness (other than youth), except at backup center, where Pryz is too much of an offensive liability and should be used as a defensive sub only
Rationale
In the last two years, one lottery team per year has made the jump to the group of WC contenders (Jazz and Hornets, respectively). Neither of those teams had as strong of a year the previous year as the Blazers in 07-08. And neither of those teams added nearly as much talent the next year. All indications are that the returning nucleus (Roy, LMA, Trout, Blake, Webster, Frye) have continued to work their butts off this summer. Oden has had a year to refine his jump shot, pack on muscle, and get accustomed to NBA life. Bayless is mature beyond his years, ridiculously talented, complements Roy perfectly, and brings a much-needed edge. Rudy adds even more (unnecessary, but lethal) scoring punch off the bench.
There is cause for optimism in Portland.
Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.
Jordan was the first coming of Bayless.

SCHEDULE RELEASE CLARIFICATION- We'll be circling calendars next week!
The NBA schedule release is like Christmas morning for me. Last year I was coincidentally at the Windows bar (Red Lion near the Garden) watching ESPN with my laptop open when the schedule was released on August 2nd(!). I exchanged a high five with the bartender over the xmas day game.
BTW: in 2006, the schedule was released on Aug 1st.
I’ve heard that OKC mess is putting the scheduling office behind by a couple days, so I expect that we’ll be seeing the Blazers sked by end of next week.
To the other ?’s:
52 wins
-2nd round playoffs
-GO 60 games
-no transactions b4 season
-yes transaction b4 deadline when it is clear Blazers are making PO push
-ROY will be team MVP, all-star and top-ten league MVP

You are correct
I’m in Boise. Used to live in Portland about 4 years ago when I was in college. It’s hard being a Blazer fan out here, or more specifically an NBA fan. No one really cares and I can never get a good discussion/argument going. All anyone cares about here is their BSU Broncos football team. Being surrounded by all that homerism makes any I read online seem like nothing.

Wear steel-toed boots while you kick rocks Tom
Blazers will win 50 games, make it to the second round.
Oden will start about 16 games but will see significant minutes in all games unless he gets injured. The Blazers will bring him along slowly because of concerns about his knee and because he’s kind of a project. Also because of respect for Pryz.
No trades or deals at all this year.
Roy, Bayless or Rudy will be the team MVP.
Winning is everything.

by McLovinVs.TheDude on Jul 29, 2008 9:19 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he will get a few starts even when Pryz is healthy
But honestly, I think the Blazers will bring him along very slowly. They can afford to do that because of Pryz and Fry and Diogu and LaFrentz.
I suppose there is a chance that he will earn the starting spot by the end of the season, but he’ll have to show that he is ready.
Winning is everything.

Oden a project?
If Oden is healthy, Pryz is not starting. Ever. In fact, Frye is better suited as a backup center, unless there’s a specific defensive matchup he can’t handle. Diago should step in for more frontcourt depth. Blazers were about 5 points per 100 possessions better last year when Pryz had his butt planted firmly on the bench. And that was without the best center prospect since Shaq supplanting him.
In what way is Oden a project? If he’s a project, every rookie in the history of the league was a project. DeAndre Jordan is a project. Anthony Randolph is a project. Greg Oden is not a project.
Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.
Jordan was the first coming of Bayless.

"Frye is better suided as a backup center"
No. Frye is not a center- he was truly dreadful early in the season when forced to play center. I think people on this site do tend to overlook Przy’s horrible offense (though he absolutely deserves credit for his D), but according to 82games.com, he was actually closer to a -1 pts/100 possession (the offense was 5.6 pts worse but the D was 4.6 pts better). All this really tells us is that Joel was slightly less effective against NBA starting centers than his backups were against reserves.
Frye has a role with this team, as a backup PF. I hope that Joel gets the backup C minutes.
You are right though, Oden is not a project— he’s ready to step in and contribute from day 1. If healthy, he should be the opening day starter.

Look more closely
You’re right about Pryz’s impact on the D. But not about Frye as center. And certainly not about Pryz being better than Frye in that role.
Out of the top ten five man units that included Frye, he was considered by 82games to be the center in nine of those lineups. Not a power forward.
And while you’re right that Pryz had an overall impact of -1 per 100 possessions, Frye had an overall impact of +3.3. That’s not just “slightly” better. It’s significant. And I don’t think you can explain that away by saying Frye was playing against reserves. The lineup where Frye got by far the most of his minutes was the rest of the starting lineup, with him at C – with Roy, Blake, Webster, and Aldridge.
Here’s the most enlightening stat – that lineup was much more effective with Frye than Pryz. With Frye, they put up 112 points per 100 possessions and gave up 103. With Pryz, they put up 107 and gave up 105. That’s a significant boost.
Links are included above.

that's very interesting
I’m a stats guy (I don’t trust my eyes because I know I have biases and sometimes see what I want to see), and this is a case where the stats appear to contradict what I (and many people on here) believe—that Przybilla is much more effective at Center than Frye.
You are right that +3.3 vs. 1.0 is significant, and also that it can’t be explained away by saying Frye played with reserves- indeed, this appears to validate Nate’s decision to play Frye late in games over Joel on a number of occasions (which infuriated many on this site). Frye’s presence as a guy the D has to respect does make things easier for Aldridge and Roy for sure.
I’m not sure what to make of all this, but I find it very interesting and I’m glad you posted it. Wait until Timbo gets here- Timbo will not be pleased that you are arguing Frye is an effective center.

That's a big part of the reason
I think the Blazers will make a more significant jump than many others believe. It seems to be a reasonable expectation that Oden will bring Pryz’s D to the table – but without the corresponding drop-off in O. If Oden can just replicate Pryz’s effect on the defense and Frye’s on the offense, that equals a powerful lineup.
Also, ever checked out Jack’s bottom line on 82games? It’s not pretty at -6.6. He absolutely killed the offense, and didn’t help the D. I know people tend to think Bayless won’t be as good as Jack right away because of the much touted experience factor, but I think he’ll step right in and be an immediate and significant improvement.
Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.
Jordan was the first coming of Bayless.
by KP Corleone on Jul 29, 2008 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Interesting
I think most folks are in agreement that Oden, Bayless and Rudy are all more talented than the people they will be taking minutes from. Its hard to predict how long it will take then to gel with their teammates and figure out the NBA game.
I think Oden’s effect on the offense is tough to predict- he’s very unlikely to be in Joel territory but just how much better will he make his teammates?
I think Bayless is extremely well suited to the Jack role and I could see him being an immediate upgrade. One interesting point is that James Jones was our most effective small forward—how will his loss affect the team? What will Rudy Fernandez provide and who will he take minutes from?
There’s a lot of questions that need to be answered which is why you’ll see predictions ranging from 45 wins all the way to 55ish.

Channing is fine with the backup role but I remember he looked and did a lot better as starter when LA was down.He might do better on another team but I dont want to trade him and wants to stay.
by southern oregon on Jul 29, 2008 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I Agree
I think Channing gets listed as a center because power forwards in the west are centers in the east. He did play a lot of center last year, because he had too, not because he is a center. I look forward to watching him play, with a year of experience here, and knowing his role. His position is nothing like a quarterback, but his career is similar to Alex Smiths. His coaches kept changing.

-Who will be the Blazer’s MVP? ODEN. And he will only be 90%!
GO will get his Mr. T on mid-season. (Having to trick Greg and tranquilize him prior to all air flights will present logistical problems.) His raw, but somehow childlike and likeable, display of agression will mark the slow and agonizing death of most other supposed NBA centers. And yes, the refs will cheat us in the WCF (will not have should have gone to Game 7, anyway).
Book it!
