Beckham to the Blazers?

I was doing my normal morning run-through of the sports sites and the pop culture sites and this rumor comes up - the Blazers are in talks to get a great athlete that is extremely well-known.  I’ve seen this subtext, this code before.

The Blazers are in talks with the Los Angeles Galaxy to trade for David Beckham.

It’s an obvious trade for both teams.  Beckham is getting older but he’s still an athlete at the peak of his game, and could add a veteran presence to the youngest team in the NBA.  He’s fast and has leadership that just can’t be quantified, leading his teams to multiple Premiership and UEFA titles.  Also, he will bring much-needed publicity to Portland.  What’s better to get the team on national and international television than having the most famous athlete in the entire world playing PG for the team?  We can’t forget his international popularity, also.  He will be a great link to Europe and our European players.  What better for a young gun like Rudy or Sergio than having the player they grew up idolizing on Real Madrid come in and help them?  What an ambassador!

I assume that Paul Allen is buying the MLS in the trade for him, along with unloading Darius Miles’ contract on Los Angeles, which finally returns him to his head-bump roots.

The future keeps on getting brighter and brighter for the Blazers.

This is the sort of post

that makes it hard to stay positive. I understand the attempt at humor but an entire fanpost and no OT tag.

There are a lot of them

Example: Tmac to the Blazers, Grant Hill to the Blazers, LeBron to the Blazers.

Just as serious as those.

Nothing wrong with a little tounge in cheek humor

I am worried that this is gonna bump its way in to the recommended fanposts though.

OT?

shteveo, I think just seeing the name BECKHAM in the title should suffice. lighten up.

Even better move

After Paul keeps Beckham in Portland for a year and getting all the media attention, KP creates even more salary space by trading him to Paul Allen’s MLS startup team, the Seattle Sounders, in 09.

Portland Timbers...

Paul Allen should get him on the Timbers.

Well

Paul Allen is a minority owner of the Seattle club. I’m pretty sure they included him to get access to the Seahawk’s stadium for the games. I was actually sad when I heard this as it really hurts Portland chances of getting an MLS team when the guy with the best chance of fronting a team goes north for one. Also, Drew Carey is another minority owner of that team. He’s apparently a huge soccer fan.

What I want to know

is what does it take for the blazers to get Claire Danes because I thought she was really dang cute in stardust.

I definitely get this post.

Let’s see Lamar Odom go after Roy if Bourne is on the court. Make it happen, KP.

Well played

This trade has exactly the same chance of happening as 90% of the trade posts that get thrown out there, makes about as much sense, and is about as feasible financially.

Not just random blog posts either – the worst trade speculation I’ve heard all summer came from David Aldridge during his summer league cameo, when he floated “Vince Carter” like it would make perfect sense for everybody concerned, and made sure to preface it by saying he had no concrete information and wasn’t trying to start anything (because he knew everyone would immediately recognize how much sense it makes).

Good call Nate, glad you get paid for saying these things. Way to pay attention to life. I’ve got some asbestos I’d like to sell you. Best insulation money can buy.

I might prefer Beckham to VC, TMac, etc. – he’s probably a better passer, and at the very least he would bring a few girls to the stands…

he couldn't hack it.

Beckham would be a great asset, and his wife has many great assets, but I just don’t see it working out for him here. Can you imagine NBA players taking orders from that girly voice of his? come on. And he looks pretty tough with the new tattoos and all, but do we need another player in the league diving over phantom fouls? Manu is enough for me on that front. Also, lets not forget his shoot-out performance in the 2004 euros, I can see it now “Beckham steps up to the line….and he has tossed it clear over the backboard!!”. And needless to say, but, how many football violations would he compile in a season?

I laughed really hard about this one, but it wasn't posted here but on the ESPN forums

That was from a Raptors fan, in the wake of some talks about possible deals for Calderon. The original poster started with two scenarios that were kind of okay. Not really good trade suggestions, but mind you it’s coming from a Raptors fan who has some leeway to overvalue their own guys:

- Richard Jefferson for Bargnani and Nesterovic
- Ford to the Blazers; the #13 overall pick, Travis Outlaw, and Steve Blake to the Raptors

And then it went south, although I really would have liked to ship out one centerpiece of this trade (quote with typos and all, keep reading even if you need to laugh):

My view on how this offseason will unfold.

1) Rasho [Nesterovic], Ford, Ukic [PG, 24, at this time an unsigned draft pick out of Croatia] and Joey [Graham] to Portland for Pryzbilla, Jack, Darius Mile, Rodriguez and Fernandez.

Why Portland would do it?

- Ford plays the Conley (Ohio state role) to Oden. Also a good change up to Roy and Blake.

- Rasho is a great mentor for Oden and Aldridge plus he has an expiring contract.

- Ukic has size and potential though he isn’t as ready a Fernandez.

- Joey is intriguing.

Why Toronto would do it.

- Pryzbilla is long and a little quicker than Rasho.

- Fernandez may be a great complement to Calderon on the wing and he’s an improvement over Parker. He’s the prize for Toronto.

- Jack is the perfect backup PG. He’s also tough and is a friend of Bosh (Geargia Tech).

- Miles could be a sleeper but if not his contract expires before the crucial FA draft of 2010.

- Rodriquez wants to get out of Portland and he adds to our Spanish backcourt.

The worst part about this post

Is my girlfriend one-upped the joke when I told her about it.

What about the Posh effect on Portland. Will that Louis Vuitton on Fifth be constantly ransacked? Will E! Network take over the top of the KOIN Tower? Will we be getting Pinkberry on 23rd?

Seriously!

I laughed out loud when I saw that. I would be ashamed to mention any internet activity regarding basketball forums, etc. other than to those fellow, freakish blazer fans like me. Definitely not a girlfriend.

To get back “on topic”... I’d rather see Kimbo Slice, or maybe even Dick Cheney (shudder) than Beckham. We need attitude on this team. Attitude and the will to get your way no matter what the cost (shredding the constitution, torture, etc.)...

Ridiculous trade suggestions part 42: Why stop with "Beckham to the Blazers"? I present the B-All-Stars!

All trades would work. Yes, I did spend 30 minutes with the ESPN trade machine to verify this. Call me crazy. Reasoning in brackets. Let’s fill our roster with B-names:

1 Blake (stays of course)

2 Bayless (B-Rex is set in stone)

3 And so is Batum (Sophia would kill the GM otherwise).

4 RLEC for Chauncey Billups (Couldn’t bring myself to do a Mike Bibby trade. Substitute Elton Brand if you want a big man)

5 Sergio for Brandon Bass (two B-names is rare. We need this guy, though he plays a different position)

6 Rudy for Marco Belinelli (I wanted an international player trade, and who said they need to have the same quality. Okay, plus a first round pick from GS, though we can’t use that on Ricky RuBio. Chase Budinger might be available as the best B-Name player in the 2009 draft)

7 Ike for Andray Blatche (no, despite the name he is not a Russian scrub but a pretty decent US player)

8 Channing for Andrew Bynum (now that’s a deal I might actually make)

9 Outlaw for Michael Beasley (now it gets tough, but he has undeniable talent and can play 4 and 3 like Trout)

10 Webster for Bruce Bowen (Stupid, I know. But he’s another double B. And hey, we always complained about our perimeter defense)

11 Joel for Shane Battier (Yes, the perimeter defense of our dreams…)

12 LMA for…tough to find a guy…Wallace’s Ben?...Nah…Biedrins signed a stupid new contract…we postpone this one

13 Brandon Roy for Corey Brewer (I decided that the first-name B doesn’t cut it. And hey, what did you expect? A better team with a trade for Kobe B.? Ducking head!)

14 Oden for Kwame Brown (DUCK AND COVER! Okay, you got me. Greg and LMA for Carlos Boozer. Well, Utah would do this deal in a minute ;-) And Chris Bosh doesn’t work, too expensive, except if we add Joel for 3 for 1 and that would be a too ridiculous even for this ridiculous trade scenario. Are we friends again?)

14 b Not that many B-name free agents available to replace a big man. Hmh, maybe P.J. Brown wants another ring. Earl Barron from the Heat wouldn’t be that bad. Or do we want to go really really really tiny with Earl Boykins?

15 Oh yeah, and the Beckham deal to fill our 15th spot. Sorry Petteri, you totally have the wrong name.

Olympics, please start already…

No offense to robrun ...

... but this makes the recommended list?

I have no problem with throwing a little t-i-c out on a slow day. In fact I agree 100% with robrun that this makes as much sense as some of the real trade proposals we see. I just don’t quite get what makes it rise above the rest. Maybe it’s not twisted enough for my sense of humor, which is admittedly on the warped side. (Now Tom’s avatar with the statue is funny.)

Personally, I'd prefer

Manny Ramirez. The Blazers could use some right handed thump in the middle of their lineup….I’m just glad no one has brought up Favre
