OT: 95.5 Morning Sports Page Changes

As I pulled out onto the road this A.M. (partially conscious, as usual for a Monday morn), I noticed that the familiar voices of Kenny and Katy on 95.5 The Game (here in PDX) were replaced with some annoying L.A. radio personalities.

According to 92wastheyear, who heard the promo, Gavin "The People's Champ" will take over "The Morning Sports Page" sports talk.

I really enjoyed having a local sports talk show, and feared that once again Portland morning sports talk had been yanked. I didn't mind Kenny's slightly amateurish delivery, and the show had been growing on me lately.

How do you feel about this change?

I am suprised the experiment didn't last longer

I am not totally dismayed though to have Dawson in the morning drive slot. I think getting him away from Canzano is probably good. The morning slot seems to get better interviews. This could get Gavin pretty big….if …..he doesn’t decide to be a JC clone

Kenny and Katie

Katie was just about the worst radio host I’ve heard in a long time! All the talk about how good looking she was and then to see her on the news and my thought was “what and ugly old lady!”. And Kenny….oh Kenny….Kenny just needs to be a wing man and not the lead on any show. If you can limit Kenny and keep him under control he would be much better. I welcome the change up and hope that Gavin Dawson tones his show a little to fit the morning drive. Love the energy and can’t wait till next week.

i liked gavin

after John C, that way all the other sports talk had already been talked about so Gavin could focus on the blazers. If he’s in the morning slot he’s going to need tot alk about whatever the top sports stories of the day are going to be.

And does anyone else just hate Jim Rome?

I just turn the radio off for 3 hours

Rome is the best interviewer in the business, but the rest of his show is frustrating. I don’t listen for schmucks to make comments, I listen to any show in a search for insight about the topics of the day. (Mostly that comes from experts.)

by parkinglotj on Jul 28, 2008 10:39 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree totally.

He’s a great interviewer, but the rest of his show annoys me. I used to HATE Rome way back when (I’m talking like 98/99), and only recently can stomach him (on the rare occasions that I tune in).

Colin on the other hand, I used to like listening to when he had his Portland show..but I can’t stand him now on his national show.

Arrogant to the extreme

He’s like that guy who never got any girls in highschool and suddenly in his twenties girls find him cute and he just never shuts up about how cool he is….
plus he knows little to nothing about sports and I would surprised if he ever once played one

Look up Rome Sweatpants on the tube

you’ll laugh. Hey I saw Rome fly into the ONG airfield on a blackhawk, then after the show upon driving out crossed his path as he was getting back on the bird. I cant believe the cops didnt give me a ticket for hanging out the window while driving shouting “ROME YOU RULE!!!”

Goodness. Remember Sheed showed up and Rome called him a freak- slap- handshake. Even tho they were to become what they became Rome was on our side.

Always loved Rome

And always will. Yeah, he gets repetitive from time to time, but I laugh out loud at his show more times in one day than in most other shows in a month.

I like Gavin, but I will miss the two K's. They balanced each other well.

Even though they did kinda make fun of me for saying that The Heat might take Bayless number two. Well, looks like two teams used a smokescreen in that draft. But it obviously helped us out more. Who uses smokescreen at #2? I’ve never enjoyed being wrong as much as I was with that one.

I want to be tucked in by Greg Oden and have him tell us stories about the old days.

Undecided

I haven’t listened to Gavin that much, although I sometimes enjoy his more polished radio style over K & K. I have occasionally been frustrated by Kenny using about 200 words to make a point that requires 6. Their lack of polish was their best attribute at the same time. Kinda like shootin’ the breeze with your buddies about the game.

All I know is radio is an ultra competitive, cutthroat business. K & K might have been successful given time, but that is a luxury never given when chasing fractions of percentages in listenership.

Curious to see

Curios if it will just be Gavin, I’d really like Kenny to have a show on 95.5 that I can listen to. I enjoy him, especially his Blazer talk.

Morning Sports

Kinda seems to be more than a one person spot though. Sure Cowherd is the host of his show, but he has a couple people he interacts with, FSR nationally has 2 hosts and people outside of that they interact with, the other local morning radio shows I have heard usually have more than one host.

Curious to see where it goes.

Kenny

I like Kenny too. He doesn’t come across as the most polished radio personality, but he is a fountain of sports-knowledge and has been reporting on the Blazers and other local teams for quite some time.

I wonder if they’d have him team with Gavin. That might be interesting.

Yeah

I hope they team them up, I think it could work.

I found Kenny to be insuferable

He may havehad lots of knowledge but it was swathed in layers of blather. Plus he was usually offensive at least once per show and not in a funny non pc kind of way but in a made you feel embarrassed for him and ashamed of yourself for listening kind of way.

by raoulduke on Jul 28, 2008 12:19 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Kenny

seems to know his stuff, but then he gets off topic, usually with some sexual undertones, that I wasn’t ready for early in the morning. I think he might make a good sidekick for an evening show, maybe even for the BFT.

Too bad

I really enjoyed kenny and katie in the morning. That said, I listen to Cowherd also… it might just be too hard to compete with Herd in the morning.

I loved Gavin in the evenings, it was always when I was going home… now I’ll get 45 tired minutes talking about random national sports talk with a morning show, instead of blazer mania and good energy in the evening.

Oh well, I just want the season to start.

This really sucks.

I loved listening to the morning sports page on my way to work, and it quickly became my favorite show. Why? Because Kenny and Katie are truly fans of the Blazers who could talk blazers for hours and hours. What 95.5 needs to do is to get rid of all the Fox sports radio shows, like Jim Rome and Chris Myers. Jim Rome’s idea of being a radio personality is to put 5 minute pauses after every sentence, and to make snide remarks about baseball and football players and teams to his “clones”. What is up with that word anyway? I still don’t understand what the origin of “clones” is on his show.

I liked K & K's banter and topics but it doesn't seem like they have

great radio voices like a Mike Rice or Gavin Dawson.

Despite that, I really don’t care for Dawson. I was driving home one night hoping to hear him talk about Bayless summer league info. Instead I got to listen to a ridiculous show segment about which Blazer is “hottest” and some other nonsense about his recent vacation. Despite driving for over an hour on the road, by the time I pulled into my driveway, I still didn’t hear any Bayless stuff or real Blazer coverage.

Not looking forward to that kind of stuff during the morning drive.

Gavin Gripes

The thing about Gavin that bugs me, is the whole ego-stroking on all the promos. It’s getting over the top. I guess the promos are working if I’m sitting here complaining about hearing them.

Yeah, I get it..he’s a popular dude (at least on the radio..could be a pimply faced pencil neck in real life)...let’s focus on sports…and if you can’t come up with something insightful to discuss about the Blazers..then talk about something else…college football, nfl, whatever.

I still like him well-enough to tune in every afternoon, but let’s focus less on how cool you are, and how cool “La Familia” is and more on sports..

My .02 cents (adjusted for inflation)

I hope that goes away in the morning show, it won’t fly with the AM commuter crowd.

Kenny was mediocre

and I got the impression he didn’t prepare diligently for the show. I usually got better informed opinions here at BE. Katy was an asset. With their show if the topic was interesting or if they were going to score a good local interview then I’d hang in there, but otherwise they made it pretty easy to switch to NPR.

Dawson’s got good pipes but he’s starting to grate on me. Two things I’ve noticed about him, 1) he doesn’t allow for the possibility that players improve with experience and gain experience over time and 2) he’ll start his shift with a rumor that’s a remote possibility and by the end of his shift he’s talked himself into it being a certainty.

I find the Rome show highly entertaining but only for about 20 – 40 minutes per day when I’m making lunch or when I’m driving around. They don’t always talk sports but it keeps me up to date with what’s going on in pop culture without having to actually experience that pop culture.

Canzano is entertaining as long as I don’t take him seriously.

I’ve drifted completely away from 1080. The Herd was good until he went national – which in his mind seems to mean all New York & New England all the time unless it’s SEC football. Yawn.

On the whole since 95.5 came on the sports talk radio has gotten much better. Let’s hope the management doesn’t screw it up now.

I think gavin will bomb with his own show. he is a little to JC esc. he was the one that was pussing the draft the stash 3 years ago. and he has been down on the dafting of bayless.
