7/28: Junk goes in this box

No, this is not a reference to the SNL skit. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody knows what happened with the Spain/Argentina game? I've been watching that thread, but it seemed like the comments stopped before the game was finished broadcasting. If anybody knows what happened and the relevant Rudy stats, I'd be much obliged.

Hmm, some more words eh? Oh ok, Rafael Nadal won another championship, this one on hard court. Ho Hum...

Oden + Bayless

I just realized what different personalities they have! I wonder if they’ll get along?

Oden is laid back and kind of a funny person…. Bayless seems very serious and he’s a gym rat. He never jokes in his interviews or anything.

Laundry issues

Okay, so I clean the lint trap before each time I dry my clothes, but I still get little specks of lint (or whatever) on all of my clothes. Any tips? My first thought is that I should just run it without any clothes inside, that way any unattached junk would go into the trap instead of onto my clothes.

Any advice? My lint roller and I would appreciate it.

Also, check the dryer vent to the outside of your house. They can get plugged

and then you’re dealing with a lot worse then lint on your clothes.

Use a clothesline to dry your clothes

In the Netherlands almost no one has a clothes drying machine. They hang their clothes on the line to dry. Even folks who live in apartment buildings. They use their porches to dry their clothes. And Holland is a very rainy country.

Winning is everything.

by MT Suit on Jul 28, 2008 9:50 AM PDT up reply actions

that will very much not solve the problem

I use the clothesline all summer and I am covered in lint. Black clothes are really bad.
About once a month I finish drying in the dryer, to clear the lint off.

No advice about lint left after the dryer. Sorry.

Too many neighborhoods nowadays

actually forbid clotheslines. I live where there is a Homeowner’s Assoc. and twe cannot have them because they are “unsightly”.

Do you use fabric softener?

That would reduce static electricity which might make your clothes less attractive to lint. (Not fabric dryer sheets as they can cause buildup in the dryer.) And as S323 said, make sure you aren’t adding lint by leaving things in your pockets.

That's not a bad idea..

I use the dryer sheets each time, but that’s a good call. I’ll try the liquid stuff.

And yeah, I try to always double-check my pockets, but it’s worth making sure.

I've opened mine up and vacuumed out lint

The instruction manual that came with the drier said it should be done by a “qualified person” every two or three years. I figured what the heck—it’s no longer under warranty, I’m handy with tools, and there are lots of pictures in the manual. (Definitely try simpler suggestions first, though.)

The Lopez Twins

The Lopez’s are part Cuban so they are like a one-armed Tony Montana. The Gasol brothers are Spainish so they are like Ferdinand the Bull. So the question becomes “Who would win in a fight between a one- armed Tony Montana and Ferdinand the Bull?” Tony would just shoot the bull in the head, therefore the Lopez twins carry the day.

Hey Guys I Have a Trade Idea

So I was thinking that what we really need is some veteran leadership and some outside scoring. I also think it is important to leave some cap space open next year. I think this trade will take care of all our troubles.

First Trade:

Portland sends Greg Oden, Raef LaFrentz, & Travis Outlaw to New York for Stephon Marbury. He’ll provide that veteran presence that LaFrentz, Blake, and Przybilla failed to provide. His contract also expires the same time as LaFrentz’s so that will really help us with our cap space.

Second Trade:

Portland sends Martell Webster, Joel Przybilla, Brandon Roy, Steve Blake, LaMarcus Aldridge, & Sergio Rodriguez to Las Angeles for Kobe Bryant. Kobe will provide that outside shooting punch that the team really needs. He’s also a great leader and has playoff experience that sure would come in handy. He can’t be traded without his consent, but I don’t see how he would pass up an opportunity to play in Portland. Every NBA player wants to play in Portland.

The Trade works on the NBA Trade Machine.

I have a concern about Roy.

In this article Roy admits to watching three of five summer league games. Is anyone else bothered by this news?

Here are my list of concerns in no specific order:

Why was he home goofing off when he should have been training or conditioning his body?
He has a family, why was he neglecting them while goofing off watching summer league?
He said he was going to start a learning disability charity and instead of working on that, he was at home goofing off watching meaningless basketball games. What is the deal with that?
He’s a professional athlete in the NBA, why didn’t he have something more important to do?
Why wasn’t he on the ESPY’s?
If he watched the games on Comcast, does that mean he doesn’t care about fans in Oregon who can’t get Comcast?

I'm pretty sure they get normal paychecks

not that there’s anything normal about them

Back when I was at a non-profit in development, Jamaal Magloire donated a large-ish sum to us (large to you and me, at least). He needed a receipt, but it was tricky, because the donation had been made via payroll deduction. Therefore, there must have been a payroll. We hoped that we’d see a copy of the paystub, but alas, we didn’t .

by Section323 on Jul 28, 2008 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions

It may just be a turn of phrase

But the NBA and NFL both talk about weekly paychecks. In the NFL’s case, I’m inclined to believe it’s a euphemism for earning your money game by game, but the NBA may actually pay out that way.
Truth is- they probably get to choose how they get the check. Otherwise the team would be making money on the unpaid money throughout the year, and would obviously prefer it that way.

Taurean goes to New York (or not)

ESPN reports that the Knicks and the Nuggets put together a deal that sends short-term Blazer Taurean Green, shooting guard Bobby Jones and a 2010 second round pick to the Knicks in exchange for forward Renaldo Balkman and cold hard cash. It is expected that the Knicks will waive both players to save some money (about $2 million) since both are non-guaranteed.

I think Balkman was one of the better guys acquired by Isiah and could develop further in the future if he gets more playing time, but you be the judge who wins in that deal. Is that the best option the Knicks could find to shed some of their $100 mil salary roll, not being able to package him with one of their horrible contracts? I feel sorry for that franchise.

Maybe the Blazers scouts (who supposedly watched every team at least once this summer except Boston who didn’t play) noticed if Taurean has developed a little bit in the meantime and could be a PG option / d-league / training camp candidate. Probably not, since the Rocky Mountain News reported that “Green had a disastrous NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, averaging 6.5 points and 1.6 assists while shooting 23.3 percent. Bobby Jones had a better summer league, averaging 10 points, 4.6 rebounds and shooting 41.4 percent.” My guess is that a team will pick up Jones (24) rather quickly.

aaaaaah-hahaha...

I thought Walsh might be a step up from Isaiah, but I guess not. He just got rid of one of the good guys. Not a great player, but one of the two guys on the team who works hard and comes to play every night (David Lee being the other). I would think that Balkman and Lee would be the centerpieces of any Knick turnaround.

How difficult is this? Keep the cheap players who play hard, get rid of the malcontents. If you have to package the good guys with the bad to get the bad out of town, do what you need to do. Spend a couple of years whittling the team down until you’re fielding a crappy team of cheap, young players. Then work from the bottom up. Don’t give the few good guys away for nothing!

Balkman isn't the centerpiece to anything

You are right that he brings it every night and I like the guy, but he’s a pretty limited player. They got rid of him because its way easier to get rid of aguy like that than a guy like Zbo.

The centerpiece to the Knick turnaround is Dwyane Wade or Lebron James or whichever elite FA they can land once they clear enough cap space.

Similar salary range to what the Bucks paid for Bogut

I wonder if Okafor can command more elsewhere, and if Charlotte is willing to do a sign and trade for him if he doesn’t accept 10 million per year (no, not with us).

Also Deng is apparently thinking about taking just the one year qualifying offer in order to become an unrestricted free agent next season. If that happens, we have another small forward acquisition option.

Similar guaranteed money to the Bogut deal

but Bogut as bonuses that could tack on another $12 million on his deal.

There was a fanpost about how we all pretty much hate it that was in the top 5 for a while some time back. Nobody has used it (other than facetiously, and that was only once or twice as far as I can remember) since then. I have never heard that term outside of this or other sb nation blogs. I definitely would not say that most fans like it, and you saying that only seems to confirm their notions that Portland fans are corny and obnoxious. Some are, but there are fans of all teams that are corny and obnoxious. Don’t get me wrong, and like I said I don’t mean any offense. i have heard people reference it in real life many times and there was a big sign at a game last season…

that said, it’s probably best it stays retired at least until next draft season :)

Actually

I think I should apologize, I don’t discuss the Trail Blazers with other Portland fans outside of here and I’ve been out of town during the past couple of seasons because of school, so I had no idea how widespread it was. I thought it was something that somebody just came up with here not too long ago. I have never used the term myself, butI saw a lot of it before the fanpost demanding that people stop using it. I wasn’t aware of the fact that its use was so common, as Ben pointed out. My fault. At least it’s gone.

BEdge Credentials and Gonzo Journalism

Have been recent topics. Since my interest in Hunter Thompson goes back decades, I looked for a range of links about him. Choose option 7 on the Mahalo piece.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
