More Darius
John Canzano flipped out about the Darius situation on the radio Friday night. Download the audio here. ("John Dismisses Reports..."). The Darius segment starts roughly 6 or 7 minutes into the file.
He also tosses some pretty heavy, direct insults at Dwight Jaynes and the Tribune, which is unusual, even for Canzano.

It's funny...
He pretty much unintentionally admitted to reading the BEdge by first accidentally referring to Dwight Jaynes as Dwight Schrute (see the Trail Mix for 07/27). Coincidence? I don’t think so…

Yeah but I think it was a jab at internet blogs in particular I could feel it in my heart.

i see what you’re doing now… :)
i don’t know JC at all. my impression is that he is coolish with blogs. he blogs himself (sort of), he’s linked to us before and he did an interview with thebiglead.com. he is also a friend of ryan white and his work. that goes a long way in my book.
i took it more as Big O chest-puffing than anything else… there is no love lost between the O and the Trib. usually it stays out of print and off-air, which is why I said that this tirade was unusual.
all of it is worth tracking, at least in my book.

Canzano's Tantrum
Canzano and his bootlicker buddies clucked like the clarinet section of a high school band meeting at Dairy Queen after the Big Game.
“I’m gpnna shove this Dilly Bar in Jaynes’s face!”
“Oh yeah? Not before I call him poo poo ca ca!”
“Rad, dude!”
“And I heard Miles’s agent actually represents Miles’s financial interests!”
“No way!”
“Wayyy.”
“And the Trailblazer fans need to be calmed down, ‘cause they’re gettin’ all, like, scared, dude!”
“Poor fans. Don’t get scared, fans. We’ll protect the Blazers from ideas, no matter what it takes.”
“Man, fans are so stupid. I’m sure glad they got us to tell ‘em what to think.”
“Me, too, dude. Hey- did you hear me on Jim Rome’s show. I was awesome…..until he pulled the plug on me because I got no idea of where the line is.”
“What line?”
“Dude, I dunno. There must be some line somewhere. And I had my outline all written out, too.”
“Bummer!”
And that from a group of real-life, published lackeys of a major publishing conglomerate. Thank God they don’t just blab on the Internet.

Well
He’s been a bit of a muckraker in the past and now he seems to attacking someone who is doing something similar. Except Jaynes is actually did a bit of research. Not saying he was right, but it seemed rather well formed. It was nothing like Canzano’s field trip tailing Darius to the strip club.
If you have a strong opinion, but can’t express it clearly and coherently, then it probably was never well educated to begin with. Resorting to name calling means you probably have no idea what you are talking about.

So glad I don't live in the Portland market
Eliminates even the possibility of accidentally hearing him on the radio.
Canzano’s a hack and a liar—that’s a fact, learned through personal experience with the scumbag. It’s incredibly sad that a punk like him is one of Portland media’s leading lights.
Don’t trust a word Canzano says or writes. His shtick is all about self-promotion. Whatever ‘story’ gets him ahead-whether at the Oregonian, or kissing up to Blazer management-he’ll get it out there, attribute it to people named ‘anonymous source’ and get holier-than-thou if he’s called on it.
Hack, hack, hackity hack.
by grimc on Jul 27, 2008 3:23 PM PDT 0 recs
I actually like JC some of the time
But his muckraking tendencies are getting old. Creating a story is not the same as reporting a story. When Oden misspoke and said he wasn’t ready (at the ESPYs), Canzano basically implied that the Blazers know he’s hurt and won’t play but still use him as the face of the marketing campaign, a bait-and-switch to sell season tickets.
And it turns out, he was doing it so KP would call him and clarify Greg’s status. He of course then bragged that all he had to do was call KP and KP would appear on the air.
Anyway, JC’s ego and/or the Hate-On he has for the UofO will lead to his firing eventually. At which point he’ll move on to another market lacking an “in-your-face” obnoxious bald man who smells vaguely of anchovies.

And what kind of 18-year-old knows TheThin White Duke as Bowie and not as that raver/ club remixer who stole the name a few years ago? I am truly impressed!

Hunky Dory is his best
Ziggy is great of course as well. I would personally get Space Oddity before Station to Station. Then Aladdin Sane, Young Americans, and Let’s Dance.
Honestly though, after Station to Station, you’re probably best off getting Changes 1 and 2 (Best of) and Let’s Dance.

There's a case for that order. Not mine though...
I like the late 70s stuff the best… Lodger is terrific, Scary Monsters is terrific. If you smoke pot, Low is a great album…
Typical Bowie fans will tell ya to start with Ziggy, then Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs…
Bowie DEFINITELY jumped the shark after 1980, so watch out. There are a few good songs after Scary Monsters, but no good albums, as far as I know…

I thought so, but I'll check later
Typical Bowie fans will usually start with either Hunky Dory or Ziggy, but I don’t know of any who don’t have Hunky Dory in their top 3 (and I know more than is probably a good idea). In concert, if Bowie breaks out a Hunky Dory song, the crowd goes pretty much insane.
I would still recommend Let’s Dance (although your prohibition of anything past ‘80 is certainly wise and correct) just because it was my first exposure to Bowie, and led me to all the other (better) albums. Besides, all the tunes are catchy and non-offensive (unless you’re a Chinese girl).

Creating v. reporting
That’s a great way of putting it. Canzano does way too much of the former. ‘Course, he no doubt thinks, “Well, I’m a columnist, not a reporter!” which is used too often as self-absolution for crimes against journalism.
I can only hope that all the lying he does eventually catches up with him. But given the sorriness of The Oregonian’s editorial staff in general, I doubt that they’d even care.

I enjoy listening to John sometimes...
but lately he’s started to emote rather then report. One thing I can’t stand is when he asks for fan opinion on how we feel about something and if fans call in giving an opposing opinion to his then we are wrong about what we feel. If you ask the fans then let the fans have their opinion.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.
by JAB21 on Jul 27, 2008 3:34 PM PDT 0 recs
yeah, but
let’s be honest. He’s asking for your opinion so if he disagrees with you he can debate you, that’s kinda what talk radio is about. How boring would it be if he always agreed with everyone. Plus, that would be really odd and impossible to agree with every point of view put forth when there are so many options that contradict each other.

I didn't communicate my point very well.
I’m speaking about when he asked if the blazers were guilty of hyping Oden being in the lineup when there was some “question” as too the actual condition of his knee. He then wanted fans to call in and say if they thought the Blazers were guilty or not. The overwhelming majority of fans said not guilty and after a while Canzano stated he thought fans were in denial because we weren’t calling in as outraged as he was. If he wants the fans opinion then he needs to take what he’s given and not say that we are wrong about what our own opinion is. Disagreeing is different.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

John C was completely unlistenable this last week...
at first I found listening to him during my drive home from work somewhat interesting. But that has worn off and now I find that for the most part I find him to be an egotistical, self-promoting, opportunistic hack. Unfortunately, I also feel as though he appears to be bringing out the worst in Gavin Dawson as well. Gavin is usually more tolerable when doing his own show as opposed to being John’s sidekick.
I do however I have nothing but good things to say about The Morning Sports Page crew, and I like Wheels.

Is it just me?
Or has Canzano staked a good deal of his reputation and considerable amounts of effort making sure that Miles looks awful in the public eye? Has this evolved into some kind of personal vendetta against D. Miles (or has there been something personal here all along)?
I admit I fell victim to his (seemingly) weekly tirades about strippers and Miles’ love of “the lifestyle”, and him being basically a terrible human being in the past couple of years; I caught myself buying into the rather one-sided image that has been painted of Darius in local media and Canzano’s column in particular. But I started to really question things when it was revealed that Miles actually did have a horrible looking knee that deserved a medical retirement, as determined by an independent doctor. Could it be that Darius wasn’t loafing it, and half-heartedly coming back from injury, but was and is truly dealing with a devastating knee injury?
I’d love the Blazers to have as much cap room as possible going forward, but if Miles is willing to work himself back into shape (weight loss drugs aside) and will settle for a non-guaranteed, veteran’s minimum contract then he must really want to play hoops and he should play, despite the negative impact it could have on the Blazers. Maybe it’s time for JC to be held accountable for what could possibly be construed as libelous behavior?

To be fair
How do we know anything at all about Darius except by what is reported through the meda? Sure some of us might have encountered him first hand at a strip club, or at the local baskin robbins, but any opinions about his character that we have formed have largely been seen through the lens that local writers like Jason Quick and John Canzano have portrayed him.
I’m certain that Darius has had his troubles, and has been a major pain in the collective rears of Blazer’s management. But the fact remains that he did endure a devastating, ‘career ending’, knee injury—it’s not like he’s been faking it for two years.
I’d like to be clear, I’m not defending Darius, but I do think there has been a tendency on JC’s part to paint Darius’ story in black and white strokes, as a result we probably don’t have all of the facts at our disposal to make a fair judgment about his true character. It just seems like there’s been a good deal of vitriol generated amongst Blazer fans by a “journalist” with a seemingly personal agenda, and I think we’d all be well served to view this situation with a more critical eye.

As fans we talk about players like we’ve known them personally for a long time. Just because we’ve followed them does mean we know anything about them as people. Whether we are talking about Miles character or Oden’s desire or Bayless’ personality fit with the team, it’s all basically uninformed hearsay.

This has
always been an annoyance of mine. Quick and Canzano have long been our only real avenue of news for anything Blazers. As soon as they don’t get along with someone (which isn’t infrequent due to their egos), they paint that person as black as Hitler. It seems possible that these vendettas started when one of the journalists got their feelings hurt by a player that wouldn’t put up with their ego. Eventually the public is convinced because that’s the only voice we hear. I can’t say whether it is deserved or not in the cases of ANY former Blazer. Probably they are jerks and Jail-Blazers, but I can’t tell because I can’t trust the outlet.
That’s why I’m especially excited about how much more coverage there is now on the Blazers. I don’t think those guys will be able to get away with that anymore. And if Canzano and Quick produce consistently fair reporting, I will lend them my ear (or eyes) again.

The media is how you access information
If you have some incredible insight on Darius that nobody else has, then by all means let’s hear it. Otherwise, I’ll go by the information I’ve come across on various blogs and internet websites.
It’s not only Canzano that has reported negatively about Darius.
And for what it’s worth, Canzano was absolutely right about Zach though many disagreed with him. The Miles situation I’m sad to say is yet another example of Blazer fans being homers towards players who don’t deserve it.

The trib’s article was completely off base, as NBA have in their contracts with players the ability to speak about their health to the public. KP did nothing wrong and DJ knows it. I'm no lawyer, but ...
if you read the CBA, article 22, section 3 paragraphs D and E, it sure sounds like teams aren’t allowed to discuss a player’s health in detail unless that player specifically gives his permission. The real question is whether or not Darius had given his permission for the team to speak on his health status.
http://www.nbpa.com/cba_articles/article-XXII.php#section3
(d) Subject to Section 3(e) above, each Team may make public medical information relating to the players in its employ, provided that such information relates solely to the reasons why any such player has not been or is not rendering services as a player.
(e) A player or his immediate family (where appropriate) shall have the right to approve the terms and timing of any public release of medical information relating to any injuries or illnesses suffered by that player that are potentially life- or career-threatening, or that do not arise from the player’s participation in NBA games or practices.

letter d
“(d) Subject to Section 3(e) above, each Team may make public medical information relating to the players in its employ, provided that such information relates solely to the reasons why any such player has not been or is not rendering services as a player.”
That is all KP was doing imo.

You're missing something.
The first five words in Section D, make it pretty plain that releasing information is purely conditional, as outlined in section in E; the player or their immediate family (if appropriate) must consent to their information being released before a team can do so.
My question is whether or not there was consent on the part of Darius before this information was released. Maybe there was language in the settlement that paid him off and and released him?

Dwight Jaynes is a truly terrible writer
And I don’t blame Canzano for bashing him. Canzano misses sometimes too, sure, but Dwight Jaynes is a caricature of an old bitter writer with nothing positive to report.

The Battle of the Hacks
The interplay between the O and the Trib is constantly amusing.
Most of the guys who work at the Trib used to work at the O, and got canned at some point. That includes Eggers and Jaynes, as well as a few non-sports columnists, such as Phil Stanford, who has made a career out of grinding the Michael Francke axe. The Trib, like many minor newspapers in one-paper towns, loves to style itself as an independent voice, not beholden to the big corporate or whatever interests that drive the major daily in town. (Of course, the Trib is owned by Robert Pamplin Jr.—not exactly your anti-establishment type, though he has plenty of gripes with City Hall).
The O, of course, dismisses all the alternate weeklies and such as second-rate journalism-when it deigns to mention them at all. The very fact that Canzano is even bothering to give Jaynes and the Trib any attention whatsoever, speaks volumes. Most big-paper columnists simply ignore their brethren at the alternate weeklies-they’re kinda like blogs, but worse. :) :)
In any case, it doesn’t matter. The best writers covering the Blazers are in the blogosphere, and many of ‘em are at this site here. The future of Canzano is probably his radio show, not his column-a medium where he’s expected to be a loud, boisterous, obnoxious blowhard. Of course, much of talk radio is “entertainment” rather than “journalism”-the only question is when Canzano will make the plunge that Lars Larson made a decade ago (when he left KPTV to become a full-time radio gasbag)-and abandon all pretense of respectability? This town has already produced one Colin Cowherd-maybe we’ll produce another? :)

Love the deliciously dripping irony....
There’s nothing quite like two hacks in a cat fight. The very idea of Clownzano cutting on someone else for unethical “journalism” has simply got to be the very definition of “rich”. What a hoot!

Can it really be a catfight
If both pussycats have no claws? Ponder that.. then get back to me.
For the record… they both suck..
I remember the good old days. The Rasta Monsta days.
