Grant Hill a Blazer?

What would it take to get Grant Hill?

I love his game......when he's not injured that is....

He is the ideal vet (besides chauncey).......Could we do it for martell, channing and change.....

not sure i would either cuz of his window and all, but we need a vet, if only for a year or two

How about RLEC and a 1st rounder...thatd be worth it to me. Pheonix is sort of in a financial bind, and that could help. They wouldnt do it though...

on a side note....what would it take to get Nash...probly a lot more, but maybe he could teach bayless the point guard position. If bayless evolves into a real pg, watch out for the blazers for years to come.....that said, it's hard to teach guys to stop dribbling with their head down....court vision is about smarts, you either got it or you dont

remember the 99-2000 blazer team,

we were built on vets….pippen, stevie smith, sabas, brian grant….

that was so great, even though shaq was too much for us.

i wish now, we had pippen from back then to lead our youngsters…theres no vet in the league right now that really mirors him

I'm sure Phoenix would jump at getting something for Hill

But I think we wouldn’t give up more than Channing OR Diagu and 2nd round picks for him (and RLEC of course). I like him, and think he would help our team immensely, just like JJones last year.
I’m not really sold on Nash. He’s hurt a lot, would require more than we want to give up, and has a different skill-set than Bayless, that probably wouldn’t translate across. Roy and he would probably not flourish together, either.
Love the guy, but probably not for us.

RLEC is waayyyy more valuable than Grant Hill

You will be able to get much more on the open market

Really?

I assume you’re hoping for a Gasol-type salary dump?
I would rather get something like Hill, than wait and hope for a miracle from above.
I understand KP will be holding onto RLEC just in case, but Hill appeals as much as anything I see coming up next summer.

Who else do they give us for RLEC? Boris Diaw? I don’t see how Phoenix can explain that one.

by Bedhead on Jul 27, 2008 3:11 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I am not thinking anyone specific

However …if I give up the RLEC in a trade I would have to take back Hill plus a bunch of other stuff to make the salaries match. I would rather just keep it and let it expire thus allowing for unbalanced trades or free agent pick ups. If we are talking a trade before the deadline I would want a blockbuster

Ah, I see what you guys are saying

The salaries wouldn’t match and we’d have to take some stiffs in return, as well as cut someone probably.
Good point.
Maybe RLEC for Hill and picks? Nah, never mind.
I’d still do Ike OR Channing and picks for Hill. Seems we have too many PF/Cs right now, barring injury (knock on each and every wood and wood-like substance in reach).

But the Trailblazers are unbalanced

Fully a third of the Trailblazers roster is shooting guards:

o Brandon Roy
o Rudy Fernandez
o Martell Webster
o Rydjer Lessbay (Pig Latin)

Meanwhile, at small forward, the depth chart has a displaced shooting guard, a great fourth quarter guy who seems to play best coming off the bench, and no third option.

At point guard, the depth is deceiving:

o A solid, reliable veteran who fails to excite anybody and has a low ceiling
o A flashy player who makes very bad decisions off the court, unwise comments to the Spanish press, and has a shelf life of five minutes on the court
o A young unproven player with potential, but who needs a lot of playing time against quality opposition before he is ready to help the Trailblazers
o Three displaced shooting guards.

If you like watching a team with three 2s on the floor at once, with no 3s and no 1s, the current roster will be fun to watch develop.

by monkeysuncle on Jul 27, 2008 5:47 PM PDT to parent up   1 recs

I'm not a big fan of conventional

Just for the sake of being conventional.
When you have a 2 (Roy) who can handle the ball and a combo (Bayless) who can handle the ball and play off the ball, you’re okay.
Blake is a solid back-up.
Rudy can back up 2 or 3.
Martell can certainly play the 3, and you need that outside shooter on the starting unit.
Outlaw can play the 3 or 4.
Heck Channing might be a 3 in a pinch if his shooting is really that much better this year (as has been reported).
The entire NBA is moving to “matchup” lineups now, and we are set no matter what matchups a team throws at us.
Don’t doubt KP, Danny Aing…er…Monkey’sUncle!

LMA/Buffet 4
Oden/Przy 5

Is "Buffet" Ike or Channing?

It looks good to me- but I’ll take Roy and Blake starting, with Bayless in first for Blake, then Rudy for Roy, then Roy for Bayless or Rudy, depending on match-ups, who’s hot, etc.

by 92wastheyear on Jul 27, 2008 11:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I do too

But I also don’t think there’s a guard combo coming off someone else’s bench that can stay in front of both Bayless and Rudy. And if there is, we adjust the rotation for that game.
If Bayless learns to kick out off the drive, we have to have Rudy out on the wing.

I would love to see a small lineup sometime featuring:

1. Blake
2. Bayless
3. Rudy/Web
4. Outlaw
5. Frye/Aldridge/Oden
Bayless can really penetrate well, and with a wing on one side and Outlaw drifting to the other, I can already see 3-pt heaven!

+1 MUncle!

Very well said. We got a BUNCH of 2s! But we also need to recognize that the 2s are themselves a variety pack that will allow Nate to do some cool cooking.

I feel like I am being promised to death at the 3. Rather than looking for a traditional PG better than Blake (okay, how much again to get Cassell and his veteran ring bling?), I really do want a solid gold starter on staff at the SF position.

As for promise, and playing at his natural position, I am looking at you, Travis! Is 2008-09 the charm for HSers?

Sorry, but as for Martell, as much as I appreciate his game and his effort, I don’t see him being a starter on a championship Blazer team. Not at 2. And not out of position at 3. If I were KP, I would be entertaining offers if I felt at all sure about other SFs on the squad. And Martell is not chopped liver—we are looking for quality, here. Anyone overloaded at SF looking for a good swingman+promise? Maybe a second rounder, to boot?

Don't get rid of Martell

Until you see how he plays with the heaps of open looks he’s going to get this year.
With LMA and Oden, teams are going to have to double. With Roy driving, the perimeter players will have to double (you won’t be seeing Oden or LMA’s guy cheating off of them to stop penetration very often).
We do NOT need an all-star at every position. A nice role player here and there will get us more traction in the long run.
Patience is required, not a “building a Fantasy B-Ball team” type of mentality.

KP wouldn't sign Hill as a veteran's minimum free agent

Much less make a deal for him. He would just impede the development of the young 3 guys. He might get the Bs a few more wins, but he’s not getting them a championship this year, and that’s the only way you could justify bringing him in as a 36 year old piece to a young 20s team.

Hill would probably be a one or two year upgrade over Martell or Outlaw, but KP has said he approaches every decision with the mindset of, will this get us closer to being a championship team? He wants to avoid getting caught in the trap of being a perinneal 3-6 seed, never good enough to challenge for a title, and never bad enough to pick up quality talent in the lottery. This year, player development is more important than W’s.

Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.
Jordan was the first coming of Bayless.

But JJ is still young (at 27)

He had the best +/- of all the 3 guys last year, so yeah, he would’ve been resigned at the minimum, I would think. But he’s a better fit because (a) he’s primarily a three point shooter, and that’s not Hill’s strength – and (b) he’s almost a decade younger. If he would have been signed and developed into a solid role player for the potential title run(s), that would be fine. But it would be pretty unlikely for Hill to hang around until Oden, Bayless, LA, etc develop into serious title contenders in, say, 3 years.

Bayless isn't the second coming of Jordan.

KP Corleone.....great name by the way

i agree with the last part of your comment. “This year, player developement is more important than W’s.”
That said, having a veteran for our youngins to learn from only speeds that up….even if that veteran doesnt get a lot of playing time….

i suggest Ghill, cuz i feel he’d be fine coming off the bench, or just being used in certain situations…..he’s a class guy, and could help raise our young flourishing team

A perfect fit

Bayless and Oden could sit on his lap while he told stories about the olden days.

by DonkeyShins on Jul 28, 2008 1:34 PM PDT   0 recs

I agree wholeheartedly

But what you ARE missing, is that grant hill is a free agent after next year, so no reason to trade for him.. I posted this quite a while back, so i will just cut and paste since its still relevant:
Depending on the cost, I would like to get Grant Hill as a mentor role. I think if we could get him for less than a midlevel, he would be worth the investment in the locker room and practice alone. He can still play a bit, but I wouldnt want to see him get more than Raef LaFrentz Exhumed Corpse does now. I think that his knowledge of the game would REALLY help Webby and Outlaw and practicing and learning from him would only make them that much better. I dont know if he would be willing to be a 10th/11th guy off the bench and shoot for a title, but if he was ok with that.. I say we work something out..
I doubt KP thinks like I do though… you just hear about so many young players who excelled having really learned through observation and mentoring from older players. You saw what JJ did to the team this year. GH has FAR more experience and probably some crafty tricks to pass on to Trout

I remember the good old days. The Rasta Monsta days.
