OKC Files for 6 Name Rights

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The NBA has filed for trademark rights to six nicknames for the league's new Oklahoma City franchise: Barons, Bison, Energy, Marshalls, Thunder and Wind.

ESPN Link.

TrueHoop Link. Which is a bit more informative.

I'm glad to see they have not settled on Thunder, as that just seems to corny. I have long been a fan of the Baron's name, and of all these choices it looks like the only legitimate name of the bunch. I'm sure some of you disagree.. Which name would you go with?

I like the Oklahoma City Slickers, for the Clay Bennett Cronies cheering section at the Ford Center. Funny how he’s an oil man, and Ford keeps losing money because of the cost of oil.

LoL! Oklahoma City Slickers!!!

I like Thunder

Barons doesn’t sound like a sports team.
Remember all our Baron von Wafer jokes?

by Section323 on Jul 26, 2008 1:01 AM PDT   0 recs

he was Bayless Face

Before Bayless face existed.

I will always remember his legendary performance against the Clippers. Ten points, and the clutch free throws.

Now what made it even more confusing is that although JJ1 (I’ll miss saying that in gameday threads) was the star of that ugly, ugly, game and was the clutch free throw shooter, he missed one shot. The next play, Nate instructed not to pass the ball to his former Mancrush, JJ, but to the Baron. He accomplished achieving Nate’s trust in literally 2 days after the trade, Sergio still hasn’t, and it’s been 2 years. Still the FT event was a memorable and bizzare, part of the season, that made me, by no means a Jack man, go “wtf, why did nate give Von Wafer the ball? He joined our team like 3 days ago.”

The Bison?

I knew nothing good could come of a team in Oklahoma. The Oklahoma Evangelicals would be better than any of these ideas, while summing up why they will be forever an AWFUL team.

Other

Oklahoma City Cock Blockers. I’m talking about roosters, just in case someone thinks I’m being dirty. When I was a kid, my daddy was going to buy me the best rooster from Mr. McDonald’s farm and just before my daddy paid, a rich kid’s dad swooped in and outbid my daddy and bought my favorite rooter. I ended going home with a goose with hemorrhoids. That’s kind of what I think Oklahoma City did to Seattle.

A lot of those names suck

IMHO, Barons, Bison and Marshalls are lame and Energy sounds like a freaking WNBA team. I hope they go with Thunder or Wind.

by erastus25 on Jul 26, 2008 11:13 AM PDT   0 recs

I like the Marshalls...

but dont get the alternate spelling. Outlaws would be better, but we have one of those in Travis. It would also be nice for Outlaw to rip the Marshalls when we play them.

But I went and bought some domain names, just in case. Think they’d buy ‘em?

I normally don't pick on Typos

“I traveled trough OK” took me a heck of a long time to decrypt

til I finally came up with “I traveled through Oklahoma”

Why did nobody post movie quotes yet on any OKC naming thread I have seen?

“The only two things from Oklahoma are steers and queers, and I don’t see any horns on you boy.” – An Officer and a Gentleman, 1982 (rated PG-13)

Of course the better known quote including “steers and queers” is from “Full Metal Jacket”, deals with Private Cowboy from Texas and isn’t family friendly at all, so it can’t be posted here ;-)
Probably the name didn’t come up yet because we already have the “Bulls”, so the league instantly would reject “Steers” (or Longhorns). Bison would be the closest thing with horns.

dude

ive sean 3 other people make the same suggesation and all three got the “what the hell r u thinking?” responce, one got flagged. “hay family, wudiya say i buy us some tickets to see our favorite team, the new york 9/11s?” or “the portland “named after someting tragic that happened hear once” are on tv”. kinda lame. now Im just keeping with the theme thats been established, becouse when in rome. The first time I read that effort at comedy, i thought it was a chuckle, but then again im pretty base and easily amused. its not really funny a 4th time
