I was thinking that I'd ask everybody here what current Blazer they're most excited to see this upcoming year. But that got me thinking that very few people would choose LMA, what with Oden, Rudy, Roy, Bayless, etc, etc. And that got me thinking that whenever we talk about our big 3, our core... it always seems that LMA sorta plays the 3rd wheel.

Is he the most expendable least desired of the big 3? If so, why? Why aren't we more excited about him?

We just don't know because Oden is unproven as yet

Until Oden has played a month of injury free b’ball I don’t think we can speculate about how valuable LMA will be. I think LMA will certainly score at least as many points as he did last season. If everything goes right he will be an ideal counterweight to Oden and will end up with more shots because the defense has to pay attention to Oden.

Winning is everything.

no, he is not

aldridge can be traded just like any other, but why? He is going to compliment odens game so beutifully. I am excited to see aldridge play, he is balling with teem use in practice and I heard that the scrubs even won a few games, no tears there specially since we have our reps there. LMA is the most expendable...

... because he’s not as good as Roy and I think Oden will be better than him also. If Oden turns out to be a bust, he won’t be expendable.

But “most expendable” of the big 3 isn’t saying much. LMA isn’t going anywhere unless something really great is coming the other way.

TRAIL MIX!!!

Roy is a superstar in the making, Oden has the physique of a potential superstar, and LMA is a good power forward making nice improvements in his game. Definitely the most expendable of the 3, unless Oden washes out, in which case it will be a Big Two…

I feel your pain.

I feel that LMA has the most potential of the blazers bigs in becoming a scorer. I feel that he has the ceiling of an Amare Stoudemire in terms of offensive production. He’s certainly doesn’t have the same skill set as Amare, but I believe that his production from last year is going to get a BIG boost this year. Can you imagine how an Amare+YOUNG Shaq combo would have been? That’s what we could have in 3 years! OUTRAGEOUS!

by premthegrem on Jul 26, 2008 12:47 AM PDT   0 recs

nah

Amare is a lot more explosive. IMO, LMA’s ceiling is a better version of Bosh, with the more likely scenario being a slightly worse version of Bosh.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Jul 26, 2008 12:55 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Bosh is good,

but I don’t think he has the range that LMA has. LMA can knock it down consistently from 18+, and I don’t think that’s in Bosh’s range. In that sense alone, I think he will exceed Bosh in terms of offensive versatility. However, I will concede that Bosh has him beat in terms of strength and power, (at least as of last season). It will be interesting to see if LMA has been successful with putting weight on his lanky frame. I think some bulk on his body could go a long way towards getting him perennial all-star status, especially when combined with that offensive versatility.

I've seen Bosh hit 3s

in games. Last year he was 10 for 25, 40%. Small sample size, but it does indicate he has more range than you are giving him credit for.

Boomshakalaka

by jksnake99 on Jul 26, 2008 9:48 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

LMA better jump shooter

But Bosh is more mobile, more SF-esque, and able to drive with the ball and makes moves off the dribble.

LMA doesn’t do that, at least not yet.

I say LMA is a better, hard working version of Rasheed Wallace. I’ll take that any day of the week.

I would not be surprised if LMA is always the leading scorer, but still most expendable of the Big 3. That is only in relation to Roy and Oden of course, and he isn’t a spare wheel in the slightest—him and Oden together will be nearly unstoppable.

Fans always rank players and of course he isn’t AS untouchable, but he is untouchable in his own right.

I would hesitate

to say LMA is “better” than ‘Sheed. More consistent, maybe. Harder working, of course. Saner, no question.
But ‘Sheed is still one of the most talented inside/ outside PFs to ever play the game. From a purely skill-centered angle, there isn’t anything he can’t do well.

Not better than Sheed in his prime, sure

Not yet… but LMA is waaaaaay ahead of where Sheed was at in his early days with the Bullets/Blazers. Took him SEVERAL years to reach LMA type numbers, that LMA got in his 2nd season.

http://www.nba.com/playerfile/rasheed_wallace/career_stats.html

Just going by numbers, of course. Sheed also didn’t become the great team and man defender that he was as a Blazer and Piston until he became older, and was never a great rebounder. I didn’t remember this, but it also seemed Rasheed struggled with injuries early on before becoming pretty solid injury wise later on.

So when I see LMA doing Sheed-esque stuff, doing what he does in his 2nd season, and knowing he works much harder than Sheed and has a much more focused mind, I feel confident in saying LMA will be a better version of Sheed. Of course, you are correct, he is not yet better than Sheed in his prime.

I loved Sheed’s game and wish he commited himself to working on his game and staying focused. He had MVP talent but didn’t want to use it every game.

I feel LmA is the most important player on our team

How many times last year did we lose the game because he had a off shooting night. If LmA has his game on then it is twice as easy for everybody else on the team to get open shots. He is the focus of the offense and will continue to be. Leading scorer for the Blazers next year….book it. #1 option.

More "inside" stuff on Seattle & Stern

Unsigned article from AP via ESPN

Schultz refused to sign off on the city’s settlement with the NBA (he has a separate lawsuit) because “he told his lawyers that he could not support that settlement “because my primary objective was to secure an NBA team in Seattle, and that objective was not adequately insured by that settlement.”

Stern contacted Schultz and :

“Schultz said Stern told him “that if I did not join in the settlement … I should realize that it will become very expensive for me and my partners, and he implied that I should reconsider my position.”

Schultz said he then told Stern the settlement did not contain strong enough assurances about the NBA locating a team in Seattle and that Stern told him “the NBA would offer no further assurances in that regard.”“

Was that a threat??

"We, as Blazer fans, are perhaps the luckiest fans in the league."-Idog1976, July 19.

by jorga on Jul 26, 2008 4:50 PM PDT   0 recs

No ;-)

From the same article: Stern said in a statement to The Oklahoman that “we had a friendly conversation at the close of which we both had stated our positions. There were no threats expressed or implied.”

That said, I don’t think Schultz’ lawsuit stands much of a chance. It will be very hard for him to prove that he didn’t know at all about the primary objective of the new owners to move the franchise to their hometown and thus the founder of a multi-national company and his advisors were deceived by a bunch of businessmen from Okie. So there is really no need for Stern to push Schultz to drop it, though of course he would like to have the whole discussion end rather now instead of dragging on until next spring when a ruling is expected.

None of those people in that “discussion” are going to switch sides and say “you’re right, I’m wrong” so why all the back and forth? Is it to have the last word? I hope none of the BE’ers (hey, that’s good) get involved in that sort of slapstick.

The discussions in the Portland Trail Blazers Message Forum on ESPN are usually better

Though often still not really great (also I don’t like the technical functions and layout of their boards anymore). That thread is in the General NBA Forum, which is more OT, chaotic, and changes quicker. But unfortunately I fear some Blazers fans are contributing to these useless “discussions” by constantly bragging about the potential of the team and how great KP is.

Gay is awesome

Roy pretty clearly had a better year than Gay did (and the numbers support that statement), but Gay has a lot more athleticism and showed signs of learning how to play last year. There’s no way I’d make that swap, but its not at all impossible that Gay could surpass Roy and some point in the future.

Gasol was named MVP of the ACB over Rudy, so that’s a legitimate opinion to have also.

Mayo being the best in the rookie class is a pretty bold (ie homer) statement and who really knows with Arthur- I think he’ll be a good role player but not much more.

OK, I admit it, I didn’t click on the link, so I don’t really have any legitimate reason to say anything BUT I have to admit, the Grizzzzley’s are on my radar. I’m curious to see what Conley can evolve to, the Gasol kid intrigues me (more than his bro), I’ve always liked Gay, and who knows what’s up with Mayo.

Your signature line made me realize...

Gandhi wasn’t very tolerant, was he?

But to respond to your comment (and MGNNoah’s), this is what passes for conversation on the internet these days. Unfortunately, dialogue has been abandoned completely, and has been replaced by really putting feeling it what you are saying. Worse yet, this problem is not relegated to internet conversations alone. Almost all public discourse has devolved into this. Brash assertions and name-calling is all that is left in our political processes and in advertising. No other forms of public discourse are even used anymore, and the two I mentioned are barely paid attention to anyways. That’s what makes this forum unique… well, most of the time. :)

I would have to argue that saying that Gandhi is intolerant

for observing that Christians do a poor job of impersonating Christ is quite a claim. So many Christians are not strict adherents to the life of the man Jesus Christ—their dedication to the Old Testament demands it. Hopefully even the most stringent Christian would admit there are parts of the Bible that are impossible to coalesce.

So Gandhi observes that Christ as a man, philosopher, savior, etc. is a figure he respects. However, he notices that Christians (and I mean that not in the sense that they are of Christ but that they are members of the church of St. Paul) seem to differ from the namesake of their own religion. This is a completely fair observation and only implies intolerance so far as you presume it does.

Perhaps also think about how “tolerant” you would be of a religion that respected a nation (in this case the UK) that was routinely enslaving and torturing your people. Still find Gandhi intolerant?

Darkstar- I agree with your points on societal discourse

And that scares me to no end.
This is the 3rd stage of curmudgeonism; The 1st being that time in your early 20’s when you first utter the phrase, “God-damned Kids!”; The 2nd is that first time you turn on a popular music station and realize that you now know the soundtrack that plays in Hell.
The 3rd stage is when you start griping about how communication, manners, and morality are on a steep, downward slide and are rapidly gaining speed.
People have been saying these things for generations and generations, and society has yet to implode.
Do your part to be civil, praise/ reward civil behavior in others, and try to avoid the dreaded 4th step of curmudgeonism- screaming “Stay of my lawn!!!” at random passersby.
