(Semi OT) WNBA, What's your take?
So, this last month, I have heard more news about the WNBA ever before. First Candace Parker blows up in her first game and then Parker becomes the 2nd WNBA player ever to dunk before dunking a second time. Personally I didn't know what to think... I mean it was cool for a girl to dunk, but I thought she could have tried to style the second dunk a little more. After people settled about Candace, we had the incedent two days ago. Pretty rough. After getting all this WNBA talk shoved in my face I was on the couch flipping channels waiting for my Court Rivals team to play in its vertual game and also waiting for my beloved Office to start, I found myself watching parts of a WNBA game (Yup, I was that bored). It wasn't anything dramatically different then I excepted: Some pretty tough looking gals playing basketball at a high school boys team's level. That said, even high school boys basketball can entertaining to watch, but it takes some getting used to. I quickly got bored and flipped to Baseball Tonight (notice: some of you might have also done the same thing). So I'm not excactly thrilled with WNBA basketball yet, but what could the future hold? But enough about me, what's your take?

How'd that happen, I see you have that option up there though
And I could see it dissolved in a few years. It’s an inferior product. Honestly, I’ve watched like 2 quarters before in my life, and it was pretty boring. I hate that it feels almost sexist that I dislike watching it though. Like I ought to give it a chance.
The fight was actually one of the more interesting things to happen this summer.
What I found interesting was that I thought there’s more sense of shame towards women fighting in a basketball game, than men. Or at least that’s what it felt like to me.

Candance Parker seems cool though
She seems very competitive. Off topic, I also think she’s decent looking. Although the fact that she’s married to Sheldon Williams has me questioning this notion.

Nah
They all inherit it, some just don’t get that level of athletic ability. Like Karl Malone’s kids (illegitimate ones) they are all pretty athletic from what i heard. One of his kids is in the WNBA, another is going to be a college running back, etc. One of Shawn Kemp’s kids is going to be college basketball player.

WNBA IS BORING
It isn’t sexist, in my opinion, to state that WNBA is not only inferior in quality to the NBA but that it’s actually extremely redundant and boring. Women’s basketball, in Highschool and College is much more vibrant and fun to watch. Better plays, more passion and the crowds are hyped … the WNBA lacks all of that. Besides the fact that I enjoy seeing cute guys
playing and sweating and all that sexy stuff.
I suppose my problem is, I actually do think that women, in general , when attempting to do a physical activity started by men are going to at least appear inferior because they are never, genetically speaking, going to be bigger and stronger than men doing the same thing. That sounds incredibly sexist… ah well it is what it is, i never said I was a bra burner.

Boring
I hate the fact that if you bash the WNBA some people say that you’re anti-feminist.
I just don’t like it , I think it’s boring. I also hate polka (sorry tominhawaii…) and reality TV.

Most women that I know do not feel that the WNBA embodies feminism
If i had the energy I question in length how playing a sport for Millions…scratch that , hundreds of thousands of dollars for an entity run by men is breaking the mold for women or whatever the feminist movement stands for???
As a HUMAN BEING we have the right to conclude that we either like women’s basketball or we do not. It sucks, period. No way to really argue that. I for one am appalled and a bit offended by the ridiculous, “empowering” marketing schtick (sp?) that the WNBA uses. They want us to believe that because the women are playing a sport in INFERIOR stadiums, for LESS $ in a LESS competitive atmosphere is somehow empowering to women… um that’s a huge NO. HELL NO. What I would want to see is Lisa Leslie or Candace Parker suit up and post against Lamar Odom or Dwight Howard. I was more excited to see Danika Patrick race w/ the big boys and that chick golfer play on the SAME playing field as men then dominate. That is exciting and empowering. How is seperating women from the men somehow equal? It just emphasizing that women’s basketball is worse than men’s.

Agree with your point
However, the much of the WNBA plays in the same stadiums that are used for the NBA so they don’t play in inferior stadiums. Also pay in the WNBA isn’t a rosy as you suggested in your first paragraph. If you have less than 3 years experience, you are capped out at $42,000/year, and the most anyone was paid in 2007 was $100,000 (source) Many players play in Euro when the WNBA isn’t in season where they make far more money (along with the perks that come along with playing in Europe i.e. tax-free, paid housing, etc.)

I TOTALLY DIG CHICK HOOPS. TOTALLY DIG THE WNBA. THOSE CHICKS ARE HOT. AND THEY HAVE BEAUTIFUL SHOULDERS AND ARMS. EXCEPT FOR THE INCIDENT A COUPLE DAYS AGO CHICK HOOPS WERE A CLASS ACT ALL THE WAY. I would never argue against that
these women are obviously very talented and the exception among women, physically and athletically speaking. With that being said, I just dont like the overall feel of the WNBA b/c everything they do is not that exciting. It’s worse than college ball and women’s highschool ball.

I like the WNBA
I will watch a game on occasion during the summer. I’m a basketball junkie, and the WNBA is the best option this time of year. Candace Parker is a truly special basketball player- not just the dunks- she has a tremendous overall game.

the other player I like is Diana Taurasi
She is the Kobe of the WNBA in that she has the “you can’t guard me” swagger, without the personality issues and Laker-ness that make Kobe impossible to root for.
Sometimes I feel like WNBA players are more fundamentally sound than NBA players.

but the only way I notice the wnba is if one of them hits the cover of playboy. other wise, its like going to the gym and lifting only half of what I can. I'm sorry but I hate the WNBA
I think it’s great that women have a “League of Their Own” but it isn’t all that entertaining in my eyes. I feel like the WNBA, when it was first brought onto the scene, was nothing more than the NBA’s attempt at public relations. Not only that, but the commercials to advertise for it really pushed it down our throats. Remember the famous, “We got next..” campaign? Silly. Most of the teams are losing money. You don’t see people standing in line to buy a WNBA franchise.
As far as the fight goes, it was bound to happen. Women tend to take things really personal, so sometimes those fights can be more nasty.
Either way, you can find me watching paint dry any day of the week before you’ll see me get interested in a WNBA game. Have a WNBA team play a Division III school, and that might be fun to watch.

Might be better suited cutting ties with David Stern and the immediate NBA envelope.
Dont get me wrong, They need the male franchises to help them succeed but they need a seperate entitiy overseaing their rules and practices.

Good fundamentals, not athletic enough
The WNBA is a poorer version of the NBA the same way that men’s HS basketball, minor league baseball, MLS soccer are inferior to it’s counterparts. The level of size, strength, speed, and jumping ability (men or women) is dramatically different in the NBA, MLB, NFL than it is to amateurs and most women athletes of the same sport. The reason female tennis players and golfers are the top female money earners (williams sisters, sharipova, anika sorenstam, michelle wie) and the most entertaining to watch professionally, is that they are so close to the men’s PGA and ATP athletically and physically. That’s why the WNBA has failed. It’s a poor product with unspectacular athletes.
BTW, I heart Ana and woman’s tennis. :)

First Dunk in WNBA???
What? No other WNBA player can dunk? I have a girlfriend who can dunk, and she is just a 6’0 former volleyball player. Nothing extraordinary. There are tons of girls in track and field in the high jump competitions who are way over 6 feet tall and have great elevation. I thought those were the best female basketball athletes money can buy.
Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

there are others who can dunk
Lisa Leslie, Michelle Snow, and a few others have dunked in college (I thought in the WNBA also- is it possible those dunks were just Parkers’s first pro dunks?).
Many WNBA players can dunk- but you rarely see it in a game because a) they need a breakaway (they can’t dunk without a running start) and b) they aren’t 100% consistent with it so layins are the safer way to go (unless it is a blowout).

Here's how I feel about it:
If you would rather find a $5 bill on the ground than have the team from your city win a championship, it shouldn’t be considered a big-time sport.
That being said, I don’t think the WNBA is going away because it has the big-money backing of the NBA. If it were an independent league it certainly would have folded by now.
