WOW: Childress to Greece

Josh Childress signs with a Greek club, leaves NBA:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3501488

This is a really big deal, throws a monkeywrench into the whole restricted FA thing.  Watch for loads of people to get extensions that they otherwise wouldn't.  Like B. Jennings leaving Arizona for Europe, this changes the set of options that the NBA execs were assuming when they drafted rules.

On the flip side, what does it say about Josh Childress that he'd rather go play in relative anonymity in Greece instead of in the NBA?  This is the opposite of the decision that Rudy made -- choosing to take (short term) more money to play against inferior competition.  Will NBA teams still be there making offers three years from now if he wants to come back?  Not so sure.

Not surprised.

This makes me feel even stronger about a need for the NBA to globalize like we talked about a bit in the sergio thread. Of course it would be crazy difficult. It would also factor in a ton of other things: what happens in conversion ($?), what about the Olympics, what about politics, blah, blah, blah. It would be an interesting experience though. This happens in the same year that a high school player decides to go overseas instead of college…It makes great sense. He makes bank, Greece is a nice place, everyone except the Hawks are happy. What happens if they don’t sign Smith? Ouch.

I want to be tucked in by Greg Oden and have him tell us stories about the old days.

No need for the MBA to globalize

I don’t think the NBA needs to globalize, that just spreads the monopoly.
What we are seeing is basketball globalizing. that’s awesome.

If they could align the rule we’d be all set.

let the wild rumpus begin.

And as i said before let PA buy a stake in a Euro team too.

Whoa!

I kind of assumed he was using it as a ploy to get more cash from the Hawks. That’s crazy! I hope Stern uses this as an opportunity to improve the league (although, I shouldn’t trust him after the past couple of years).

Atlanta has some beautiful women

And there is always Buckhead, which is a really cool place, beyond that, Atlanta sucks. Monster traffic, muggy summers, and Olympic bombers. It’s a nice place to visit, but you don’t want to live there.

I beg to differ.

The traffic does suck, even more so than Seattle or Portland. The weather only sucks for those folks from the NW who are not accustomed to the humidity (we really do have a wonderful climate up here). I lived in Atlanta for a year and liked it greatly. If there is one place I probably didn’t like, it was Buckhead and that was not because Buckhead sucked, but because of the yuppie butt____’s that frequented the place. I swear, between Buckhead and Georgetown in DC, you could find something like 70% of the people who liked to wear two shirts at the same time – you remember – the polo under the collared button-downed.

I probably see a real life Mahu every other day. There is a real cute one that rides my bus and I call her “My Favorite Mahu,” and I even added her to my Myspace. Mahu is sometimes a derogatory name for gays and an accepted term for transsexuals.

Take a walk down Kuhio Ave in Waikiki at night and there are some 6’ 2” 230 lb Mahu’s that are a little intimidating. The ones from the HBO show are on a street downtown. They’re really hot until they talk. They must do good business because the street they hang out on has two really cool Irish bars on it.

Still not NBA numbers in Euroland...

From the above-cited story:

The deal [$20M over 3 years] is the most lucrative current contract in European basketball and the biggest in Euroleague history, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which first reported the signing.

"He shoots....................... he scores!!!"

by timbo on Jul 23, 2008 9:21 AM PDT reply actions

in the same story

it said the Hawks offered more as well, yet he still left for europe. Are the Hawks that bad? yes I believe they are.

So my question is this, after his 3year deal is done in europe, does he re-enter the draft? Is he a FA? A RFA with the Hawks still?

by usmcr3049 on Jul 23, 2008 9:31 AM PDT up reply actions

taxes

I believe they have the power to waive taxes on the money in Greece, so you have to add to that. Also, the total dollar value may have been more, but the duration longer, so the per-year is higher in Greece, I think.

Even so, it is a lot of money for Childress. I like his game - and he would have been a good addition for the right price on the Blazers - but still.

by BrailleTaser on Jul 23, 2008 9:40 AM PDT up reply actions

I heard that Grece

also gave him a nice house, and a fancy car (at no cost to him) in the deal. Sounds pretty sweet to me.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

by OCBlazerFan1 on Jul 23, 2008 9:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I hearsd that the club pays the taxes

So that what you are negotiating for is your “take home” pay, not the gross.

by raoulduke on Jul 23, 2008 9:51 AM PDT up reply actions

I do think they can waive taxes....

...US citizens pay taxes overseas over the 82k per year amount. The greek team would have to pay his taxes seperately, which makes this deal roughly 12mil a year. Sounds like that is the what ATL was offering.

by khryse22 on Jul 23, 2008 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

I don’t know the tax rules but I read somewhere that the Greek team pays the taxes, so the player gets exactly what they say he’s going to get. I otherwise don’t care about the tax laws unless I move abroad. My wife might get transferred to Cabo San Lucas in a couple of years, so I maybe I should look into it.

--. --- | -... .-.. .- --.. . .-. ...

by tominhawaii on Jul 23, 2008 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Depends

He may get waived from paying taxes in Greece, but if he chooses to live in the USA during the offseason he’d have to pay to the good old IRS any income that exceeds $80,000 (or the bulk of it since he’s an athlete).

He reamins a restricted free agent for Atlanta

while playing in Greece (or elsewhere). But in 3 years a new coach may change his opinion of Atlanta or he can easily force a sign-and-trade to another team.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Like others mentioned

20 Million over 3 years is AFTER taxes, so it’s quite a bit of money. More than he’d likely get in the NBA, since that works out to a 10+ million a year deal, right?

Atlanta will retain the rights to him for at least two years.

Childress has an option at the end of each year of his three year contract, to opt out of it and return to the NBA (per Pro Sports Daily).

Strictly as a guess, I’d expect him to get homesick and return to the US after one season in Greece.

I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

After he opts out...

What then? He joins Atlanta at a salary to be determined later?

That’s an interesting detail, TwoDeep, and I also wonder if he’ll want to come back to the NBA after a year or two.

Greece is nice, but it’s very dirty, the ruins are mostly fake and rebuilt to ‘look old’, and I’ve never seen more stray dogs in my life. That’s mainland Greece, anyways, and I’ve only spent a few weeks there in the late summer. So dirty, air wise.

Plus, it was full of these Greek fellows! Enough to ruin anyone’s day.

The islands I went to weren’t as dirty but had the same stray dog problem. Friendly packs of dogs running around lookin’ for love, so it wasn’t horrible (I named the main one that followed me everywhere Admiral Baron Von Dogenstein), but still odd I thought.

If Childress stays in the beautiful parts, perhaps he’ll be fine there forever. Even though it’s a lot of money, it does surprise me.

I fully admit of course

That I have not been everywhere and I am not an expert on which places have stray dog “problems” (because how could a doggie ever be a problem?)

Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Romania, other places in Greek’s general area and not as ‘well off’ as Greece didn’t seem to have the stray dog problem, so I guess it just stood out more to me.

I’ve never been to Asia or S. America, so they could have problems too, me no know.

So, it was probably the context of the dogs that surprised me. I knew Greece was dirty, had just travelled through some less-touristy countries on the way to Greece, and then there’s dogs a’ plenty only in Greece which surprised me a little.

With 20 million Euros, Childress can build a big park for all of the stray doggies and fix the problem in one fell SWOOP. Maybe that’s why he signed over there?

It will be interesting to see

waht impact this has on the CBA when it’s renegotiated.

Clearly, at the very least, the first round rookie scale has to change if the NBA wants to have a chance of getting any talent from Europe.

the fact that Olympiakos is taking care of the taxes so he’s essentially receiving 20+ million net…Also, lets not forget that the Hawks organization is very poorly run. The Euro leagues are a loose confederation, not the monolithic situation we have. Kind of like the Great White Father who speaks with forked tounge trying to do a peace treaty with 12 different tribes at one Pow Wow.Sterno feels he would have to dictate the terms and the Euros think hes a jerk.

Should Childress take his Greek team

deep in the Euroleague the waves this will cause may force many other European teams to come after American players in restricted free agency. The price of European contracts just jumped and with the Euro vs dollar advantage (better than 1.6 to 1) and the waiving of taxes the money is better there for fewer games. LeBron is not going to play in Europe but the gap is beginning to close.

Yesterday: “Chill isn’t going to Greece…it’s jsut postering by his agent, and you guys are taking the bait hook, line, and sinker….”

Today: “We are the new Clippers”, “Hawks management are clueless”, “Only team not to have made any deals”, “One step forward two steps back”, “Back to the lottery”.

Seems to be a lot of frustration in the land of the Hawks. If Smith goes too, they can probably write off the next season(s) after coming surprisingly close to stopping Boston this year. At least they now have to overpay for him. “So if they go, who’s left to be our SF’s? Marvin and ?”. “Salim Stoudamire?”

This may have been said somewhere already in the comments

But Childress is not going to “play in relative anonymity” as the post suggests. Already he’s garnered more attention in the press here than he would signing with any NBA team. Further, the if his abilities translate into European ball easily he will enjoy starting minutes and superstar-level adulation from the fans (who are more devoted, on the whole, than American fans). I think it makes a huge amount of success. More money. More playing time. More prestige. More Mediterranean Sea. What is the downside? Not being invited to the 3-point contest?

From what I gathered from a Truehoop link...

... a) there is a growing trend of deep pocket owners coming into the euro leagues, meaning they are expected to be more competative on salaries. b) according to Josh’s agent, it sounded like he could get more money from a euro team than from the NBA. c) with 3 years in the league, he’s shown he’s a proven commodity, so why not play a few seasons in Europe to broaden his horizons. He can still expect to get a decent contract if he decides to return to the NBA in two or three years.
