Junk Drawer - July 23rd

Hey, its 1:00 AM and I'm waiting for my Court Rivals player (Pubert Jones) to train. That must mean it's time for the next edition of the Junk Drawer extravaganza! As usual, this is the place to post all of your fun stuff, Blazer-related or not, that doesn't really deserve its own fanpost. Cool!

So, tomorrow is the last day of my first summer term in grad school. I'm in a Master in Teaching program up here, and it's pretty okay! I decided to make my OT poll about teachers because hey, that's what I'm into at this point.

Okay!

You know, I hit save as draft instead of publish on a junk drawer

Because I sent 2 minutes writing it, I’m going to stick it in here…
“Hello, and welcome to another edition of the Junk Drawer, hosted by yours truly…. You know this is why I couldn’t be in radio, my name, it’s not a good DJ name. Maybe I should get a pen name? She’s so lucky, she’s a star but she cries, cries, cries with a lonely heart. That was all for you Tom. Actually, I had to watch that music video like 20 times when it first came out in like ‘99. This girl was obsessed with it and we (sister and I) stayed at her house while my parents went to gamble in Ocean City. Interesting experience, also the first time I watched Big Daddy. That remains the only Adam Sandler movie I’ve watched all the way through. This was repeated in Vegas, where I watched pay per view with my sister, and ordered room service. I think I watched Unbreakable, O’ Brother Where Art Thou, and Erin Brockowitz (that probably isn’t the spelling but whatever) this way.

I can do stream of consciousness all day baby.”

Also I don’t know. Most of my teachers have been pretty bleh, so far (high school). I remember all my teachers for the most part. My 6th grade math teacher was favorite of mine, he was a former hippy, and wore tore rings. My 6th grade science teacher was a bit of a creep, and he dissected a lamb (also broke it’s ribs and took out it’s heart) without wearing surgical gloves. My 8th English grade teacher was a former Vietnam war vet that detailed several gruesome motorcycle accidents that he reported as a police officer. Once I got to high school I kind of became that kid teachers hate, I don’t really know why exactly. Maybe it’s because I’m sarcastic and tend to come off as arrogant? I don’t know. But I’ve gotten in plenty of arguments these past 4 years.

Who is that song by anyway? It’s way before my time, but I’m going to guess Air Supply? It started when I read that Lebron thread, it’s a sign.

Well Dheep , you know, you're pretty deep. That's probably part of the reason

you have a few problems with your teachers. In all likelihood you’re far smarter than they are. It takes a great teacher to be able to teach someone who’s smarter than they themselves are. Just take what you can from it and suck any education you can get right up, wherever it comes from. I wish you great teachers.

He was quoting Britney?

Boy bands are where it’s at. My second grade teacher, Mrs. Thorn was the only teacher I ever loved. All the rest were just going through the motions. I almost got paddled in 11th grade art class for saying the f-word, instead I had to sit at the teachers desk the rest of the year.

Six years of my life and I’m only friends with a guy who lived below my apartment in Idaho, an ex-wife of a former shipmate, and one other shipmate. Such is the life of a sailor.

I hated every teacher ever

A good teacher is worth a billion bucks, but most of the ones I had were dreadful. College was better, but they had more ego than the high school teachers.

My 8th grade science teacher was probably the only one I really liked and didn’t treat me like I was an idiot. He’s a principal somewhere now, so that’s cool.

I got really bad grades in pre-college schooling. I hated it.

Creative Destruction

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_destructionIf society emphasizes marketing/production-to/for-consumption (ie, “Conspicuous Consumption”) “Creative Destruction” might be seen as subverting status quo when it forces change, for instance, better fuel economy vehicles.Dheepan, The Dean of Boys, aka Baseball Coach, shepherded me HS, but I was a 23-year freshman before I got a great professor (Cultural Anthropology) - ... - Also a question began to motivate me to get that “masters” piece of paper” ... It was “What’s Worth Doing” (from Paul Goodman’s book “Growing Up Absurd”. In my limited time as a teacher, I most liked working with all the young adults smarter than me.

Uh oh, a generational moment

When I see Dheepan ask who sings “Don’t Stop Believing”, my first thought is, “Whaaaat!!? How can somebody not know that???”. Then I think about all the times I haven’t known a song playing on some classic rock station at work and somebody will say to me, “Whaaaat!!!? How can you not know that is The Doobie Brothers, BTO, Grand Funk, (insert favorite band name currently touring county fairs here)!!!!!!”.

Yeah, I know Journey goes way, way, back in time also. I think the Smithsonian has Steve Perry’s mummy on display. But still, when my brain thinks, “80’s music”, it’s usually a Journey song that gets turned on in the grey matter jukebox.

Dang, I’m old.

by lukeyhere on Jul 23, 2008 8:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Another generational moment

When I play Rock Band with my much younger sister-in-law and she has no idea who the bands are in the game, yet I can recite the lyrics for 95% of the songs in game before I even started playing…

Me – Whoa, that’s STP and Boston!
Sister-in-Law – Who?
Me – Ouch!

But it makes me feel better when my wife knows pretty much every Bob Dylan song by heart and she’s one year younger than me.

by ZooooomByU on Jul 23, 2008 8:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Steve Perry

is alive and well, thank you very much (if by well you mean he has throat cancer which ended his singing career). Well he’s alive.

Also, it can be called a generation gap to a point before it becomes musical ignorance. “Don’t Stop Believin’” is one of the most played out songs, especially in the last few years. I can certainly understand not liking it (it has really worn thin on me) but knowing who does it? Shocking.

What about the Beatles? Bob Dylan? Led Zep? Black Sabbath? The Who? The Doors? I don’t want to live in a world where people don’t know who these groups are or what songs they have made.Turn off the top 40 radio and listen to some real music.

Imaginary inside information leads me to believe that Lebron injured his ankle during the Team USA scrimmage while trying to guard Jerryd “Dracula” Bayless.

While Lebron crumpled over in pain, Bayless quickly ran over and promptly tore a chunk of flesh off the King’s neck with his bloodthirsty teeth. My oh my, Team USA….what have you got yourselves into?

Best teacher

I’ve had one at every level, except grad school. In grade school the kids moved as a group to the next teacher and on the last day of 4th grade we were told who our next teacher would be and on the playground the kids in our class said “oh you poor kids” and we fretted all summer. But we loved her! Don’t know if we changed or our class just clicked with her, but she was great.

In jr hi it was my 7th & 8th grade science teacher. We could get him off on long tangents, but, except for his yrs as a Marine, were science related. In high school it was a class called Far East taught by a woman who was passionate about her subject – she had lived in China for a number of years. She took us on shopping expeditions to Seattle’s International District on Saturdays ending with authentic Chinese food which we had to eat with chopsticks (and no sugar in the tea.)

My fave college teacher taught cultural Anthropology – and he came to Anthro only in graduate school – he was going for his PhD in English and took Anthro as a cross campus course and fell in love with it. He spent time in Australia researching folk music and became a recognized authority on that subject. He’d often bring his guitar to class…

Beyond grade school the connecting thread was a deep passion for the subject —something I tried to remember during my own teaching years (which was hard as I taught third grade and I had to teach everything...) :)

I used to be hip to the bed wetter humor and then I was touched.

True Story:

I was playing rock band with my wife and a four year old girl, after U of H got their booty handed to them in the Sugar Bowl. My wife was playing the drums, and the little girl and I were on the couch behind her. I was just joking and pointed at my wife and whispered, “She’s a bed wetter.” The little girl smile real big and said, “So am I.” That really wasn’t the reaction I was going for so I just said, “All right, high five.” Then she high fived me and I never joked about bed wetting again.

My wife was playing the drums, and the little girl and I were on the couch behind her. I was just joking and pointed at my wife and whispered, "She’s a bed wetter." The little girl smile real big and said, "So am I." That really wasn’t the reaction I was going for so I just said, "All right, high five." summer jams

Since everyone is talking about music today let’s hear what are you listening to this summer, or what is your favorite song of the summer(I dont like to call them jams.)?

I will get the ball rolling with:

artist: Modern Life is War
album: Witness
song: D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S.

I always forget how good this band was. Unfortunately I was doing a lot of schooling during their heyday so I only got to see them once. One of the few bands that has put out heartfelt records in the past few years in the genre of punk/hardcore. timbo will hate this record.

artist: MDC
album: not the self titled album

I keep going out of my way to find good songs by this band that were not on the self titled album, which also happens to be one of, if not, the best record of all time. The band that wrote “I Remember” also wrote a song about tofu spaghetti. So far my favorite song of the non s/t albums is “Thanks for Giving me Something I didnt Want” which is a nice little diddy about how as americans we are expected to blindly be thankful for things like war and genocide. A thought provoking song that is also catchy, just like the entire s/t album.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

From the Set it Off soundtrack?

I watched that movie with one of my sisters when I was a kid and she tried to pretend she wasn’t crying when Vivica Fox died. She pulled the “I have something in my eye” thing. Like I was about to fall for that. Sorry to spoil the movie if anybody hasn’t seen it.

Everybody always has such great answers to that question. It’s always some eclectic mix with stuff I’ve never heard of like,” I’m listening to Spatula Kidneys by Paper Cut Moonlight Sponge…they’re the best!”.

I don’t own an iPod. If I did it would probably be rolling around in the floorboards of my car covered in petrified McDonald’s fries.

If you like chocolate and hazelnut

You should march to your nearest neighborhood grocery store and go to the Nutella aisle and try it out.

Go Euro style and put it in a crepe! On some toast! Make a sammich!

I like it, but it’s not the sort of thing I’d eat all the time. Maybe if it was made with chicken thighs instead of chocolate and hazelnut, I’d eat it more often, but alas.

come to Oregon with every sale of Nutella as well over 90% of US hazelnuts are grown here.

Every fall Burgerville features a Hazelnut Chocolate milkshake. I tried one, but I really don’t like hazelnuts all that much. I had a few hazelnut/filbert trees in my backyard when I lived near Milwaukie and I always left them for the squirrels and raccoons.

Interview with Brett Favre!

Big Show host (BS): “I understand that today on the Big Show we have Brett Favre in studio. Come into the booth and tell our listeners all about that squabble in Green Bay.”

[Scraggly-looking woman walks in and sits down.]

BS “Maam, are you Brett Favre’s Mom? Mrs. Favre?”
OW (Old Woman): “No. I told that producer fella my name is Bev Faarte.”
BS: “Bev Fart?”
OW: “No. Bev FAARTE!”
BS: “Okay, then.”
OW: “And this program is not treating me fairly!”
BS: “How so, I thought I was being cordial …”
OW: “Not you! Management! You don’t remember me, do you? I cleaned the toilets around here last season. Not on salary. I was under contract. They asked me if I was going to come back this month or finally retire. They pressured me. An old woman. Me. Bev Faarte. Who gave years of toilet service to this show. I needed more time to decide. Now you got some young thing cleaning your toilets with no proven record of professional level sanitation experience!”
BS: “I see. That could be a problem. My co-host, for instance …”
OW: “So I retired but I didn’t mean it! That scene in the lobby, with the crying and the cameras … I was conflicted. Now I want my job back or a guaranteed contract with another sports talk radio show. You could trade me, maybe for a decent stats guy.”
BS: “Bev, I have been passed a question by the producer. He wants me to ask you about your use of a company-issued cell phone to call-in to rival talk stations.”
OW: “I have no comment.”
BS: “Thank you, Bev Fart.”
OW: “That’s Faarte!”
BS: “Yes. Yes, it is.”

History/Poly Sci/Education major

As my Sensei always says, ” Those that are willing to teach,
will have the greatest reward. Growth through learning”.
My favorite teacher was my freshman history teacher, Mr.
Dickerson. He had a way of presenting history as the stories of
people who overcame adversity with hard work and intelligence,
leading to triumph. He was also my freshman baseball coach,
and combined my two favorite subjects in work and play.
I never would have made it thru high school math if I hadn’t had
a wonderful Algebra teacher in Ms. Carlson. She gave me a lot of
one on one help to pass through my least engaging subject. Thanks
to her, I came to understand how caring about students could help
inspire young minds to succeed in life.

Mister Ernst

my 8th grade teacher granted us the “reward” for “good behavior” of being able to watch “Alien” when it first came out, and on one of those LP sized digital discs.

I cant imagine how we actually earned that, if he knew what all we got away with… eh… he probably knew…

So this guy truly cared about us. He had every violent scene and swear word plotted so as to either FF thru or mute. I remember most about the movie was when he let a cuss word slip and then he rewound it it and muted it. We were all wooping it up as he tried to tell us to settle down.

I think this is a great topic that helps remind us there’s alot more important things in life then the next NBA dynasty.

If you don't mind me asking, how long ago was that?

When I lived in Arkansas and Louisiana in the early-mid ‘90s the teachers/principals were allowed to spank children. They needed permission from the parents, but most parents gave them permission. My mother told them that if I was bad, they were to call her and she’d come down to the school and spank me herself.

Back then, the parents knew and trusted their kids teachers, and such a lesson was accepted. Today it would be tantamount to a lawsuit against the school district and a reward for the kid.

KP at USA Practices

I just read that KP’s been at the USA practices. So now that makes LMA, Bayless, Nate and KP with some involvement. KP’s not doing much per se, but you know he’s scheming something. At the very least, he’s keen on the scene with lot’s of high talent.

He's trading LMA and Bayless and Nate

And getting Dwight Howard, Lebron James, and Coach K. from Duke.

Darius Miles found me.

Clippers and Jazz trade point guards

Jason Hart to Clippers. Brevin Knight to Jazz.
On first look that move actually makes Utah more dangerous, as it solidifies their backup for Williams. Brevin is older, but a better contributor over his career and still at this point.

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

Hmmm

Interesting, for sure.

I’d say Hart is a much better defender than Knight, even though Knight always was Mr. Thief on defense, but more the gambling, bad one on one defense type.

Knight can pass for sure though, so I guess they went for experience and pure passing (but extremely bad shooting) over Hart. I’m not an expert on Jason Hart, but I believe I liked what I saw and he was a serviceable backup. I like the move for the Clippers.

Dammit Clippers, stop getting good players, would ya?

Uh-oh!

Charlotte should have traded Brevin Knight while they had the chance :)
