Batum signed with Blazers

So, 95.5 just reported that Batum has signed a contract with the Blazers.  The terms were not disclosed.  This goes with Wheels thoughts.  Is there anyway for the Blazers to get involved in negotiations with a Euro team so that they pay a Euro team to offer a multi-year deal with a player opt out option so we can bring him back here when he's ready?

Wheels thinks Batum in, Kap out

I'm

afraid Wheels is right. Really though, would we all be stressing over this if it was regular season time? Maybe we can trade Sergio for The Finnisher.

Would a Euro team

Consider Petteri for Sergio a “fair trade”?

I wouldn’t

KP would probably have to throw in Freeland (if he could) to make that hypothetical deal happen

by two4larue on Jul 22, 2008 4:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't even think you can "trade" between NBA teams and other leagues

Not the same CBA. Also Euro teams don’t care about salary caps, they are structured more like soccer teams: The team with the most money wins the best players. Only TV money and things like this is split between the teams in a league.

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

Got it

But just the idea of cross-league trades is interesting. And Stern will have to come up with some agreements with European leagues and/or modifications to the CBA regarding the current rookie salary structure and buyout rules if the dollar continues to slump. Otherwise earning a big net Euro salary looks more and more attractive for players from both sides of the pond.

You're right,

it is an intriguing idea. Did anyone else read something in Sports Illustrated about someone in Russia pushing hard for an NBA team and them thinking that it was not only plausible, but in the works?

Interesting that nearly everybody so far has been off-topic

I know some of you are taking this to mean that Koponen is NOT going to be signed. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen.

But, I’m thrilled they’re signing Batum. I think in a few years we may look back and say that drafting him was a (nother) stroke of genius. Give this guy some time to get acclimated to NBA-style B-ball, let him work on his shooting and his strength, and look out! He has that certain Je ne said quoi.

We won't hear anything about Petko this week

Pritchard said they were going to watch some film and talk it over. He’s still in Las Vegas catching the Select Team and Team USA scrimmages.

Huzzah

I liked what I saw from Batum’s non-offensive areas of his game, and he excelled in the aspects of basketeering that most 19 year old athletic marvels struggle to learn—defense and teamplay.

Also, I gotta admit, the fact that KP and Nate see something in the kid and have quickly signed him helps me think we got a player there. Like I said before, when I see Batum I see a future Teyshaun Prince. With Travis Outlaw, I do not see that—too far to go defensively and teamplay-wise for Outlaw. He’s a scorer and that’s what we should expect from him, and not hold our breaths he’ll use his lankiness on defense outside of the occassional cool blocked shot.

I know he’s not that mythical vet we’ve all been pining for, but having a kid who expects no playing time and will just be spending time with Monty or in Boise seems A-Okay with me.

Petteri did better than expected but still has a helluva long way to go before he’s a NBA PG. If they bring him over, fine, but he’ll be the 6th playmaker on the team (I count Roy, Rudy, Bayless, Blake, Sergio as all guys who can either for sure or allegedly make plays) and take up a (perhaps) valuable roster spot. I really am okay with that, but I won’t mind if they let him season more.

It seems like PetKop really wants to be in the NBA, so hopefully he signs a NBA-buyout friendly Euro deal.

If we don’t sign him right away, of course. It’s really a tough call—he won’t get any playing time, really, in actual games, and he should be running a team SOMEWHERE. If it’s just the D-League while Batum works out with the main team because Monty did so well with Trout and Martell, then that’s cool too.

Biggest problem is, if we sign him, it’s not like we’re using him anytime soon.

GREAT NEWS! .... Welcome Batum

I look forward to watching your progress.

You will become that role-player, shut-down-defender SF that will compliment Roy, Olden, & Aldridge.

In the mean time, you will pressure Outlaw and Webster into adapting the SF skills that you have and they are missing.

It’s going to be a good year for the BATMAN theme each time you touch the floor.

i hope pritchard nos wat hes doing

by B-Roy_jr on Jul 22, 2008 5:40 PM PDT   0 recs

I don't think they expect him to be ready.

I remember someone said (sorry, no source) that Batum could only develop his defense to his potential if he had to guard NBA players rather than Euro players. I’m guessing that’s why he is already signed. The Blazers want him to be the defensive wing of the future, so he needs to develop his defense.

IMO, he’s already better than Webster and Outlaw on defense. Obviously, he’s really really raw on offense.

um, sweet?

A roster spot on a project. Sorta thought we were over that these years, but I guess we do have 15 to use , they can’t all be rotational. I honestly would have thought we would have signed PetKo before Batman.

I remember Pritchard said...

...that we would sign Koponen if he improved through the rest of the week. Instead, he started strong and played a little worse for the rest of the week. Batum, on the other hand, had two really bad games to start the week and was decent for his final three games.

Batum...

He is gonna give one helluva interview. I have always been under the impression that he had signed with the team before summer league started, especially since he was part of that introductory press conference. So when this story was posted on Olive I subsequently posted a link (hours before this post btw… ) and some goofy comments in the JunKDrawer..I just thought it would be a forgone conlcusion that because Kevin hearts me and knows that Blazerfan1 LOVES Nic so obviously he indeed would be signed…

I think Nic is a great addition to the team. He will firmly take hold of the “pretty boy” trophy and i have no doubt Martell will willingly give that up. Nic also will be a great piece in practice…

Lastly and thankfully, i have family in Boise, so I plan on driving at least once to visit my dear uncle ande cousins during basketball season and of course seeing Mr. Batum…...

Goal for this season.. Pic wit Nic

Does anyone know

how long before Petsku can sign with a different NBA team. I think there are plenty of NBA teams that would sign him tomorrow. How many years after the draft can we stop him from playing with another team?

They consider themselves forward thinking in Portland from what friends tell me. Apparently they have this global warming issue handled. They’ve found ways to end your life as a profit making venture. And they’re hip to counter culture icons.

forever...

unless he sits out of ALL professional basketball for a full year, at which time he can petition to reenter the NBA draft.

Honestly, if we aren’t going to sign him, I think we should trade his rights to a team that wants to sign him – perhaps a future conditional 1st round pick. I’m afraid if he signs in Europer, he ain’t ever coming back. Might as well get something for him now.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

yeah

I was thinking/hoping a late first – hence the conditional part. 2 seconds wouldn’t be bad, depending on the team we are talking about. but if not that, then we may as well gamble that we can bring him over in 3 years.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

PK

There are so many teams hurting more for PGs than the Blazers, that we should trade him if there is no hope of him playing here. Let’s get something out of this 1st round pick….

Nice to hear it is done

Nic is better off here and indicated he was going back to France as an NBA player so I think he was assured days or weeks ago that he would be here.

I also think Nic will make Outlaw and Webster better and they will hone his skills in practice.
