Positive Predictions for Bayless/Oden

Yannis Koutroupis of Hoopsworld is handing out grades for the first ten draft picks based on Summer League play and there are a couple references to Bayless/Oden that are fun reads for Blazer fans:

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9547

"Russell Westbrook – Oklahoma City Thunder
Noteworthy Performance:
18 points, five rebounds, four assists against the Indiana Pacers
Grade: B-
Review: There were some questions about how well Westbrook would play since this was his first time playing at the point guard position exclusively. He looked like a seasoned point guard though alongside Jeff Green and Kevin Durant. Westbrook handled the point extremely well and looks ready to play the position full-time. The only issue in Orlando was Westbrook's jump shot mechanics, which need some work. Other than that Westbrook play really impressed the Sonics, until they saw Jerryd Bayless earn MVP honors in Las Vegas. As good as Westbrook may be, Bayless should have been the pick."

"Outside of Joe Alexander and perhaps Danilo Gallinari everyone on this list is going to see extensive minutes during their rookie campaign. Michael Beasley, Brook Lopez, and Kevin Love all looked like viable rookie of the year candidates. While the three of them looked poised to have big years – don't expect the award to go anywhere but to Portland for Jerryd Bayless or Greg Oden."

From the followup article by Jessica Camerato:

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9555

"11. Jerryd Bayless - Portland Trail Blazers (via trade from Indiana Pacers)
Noteworthy Performance:
36 points, 14-26 FG, 3 steals against the Phoenix Suns
Grade: A+

Review: Simply put, Bayless was the best. The 19-year-old garnered MVP honors after averaging nearly 30 points and five rebounds per game and proved to be more than just a ball handler. He demonstrated fearlessness at the basket and NBA readiness in the backcourt. More importantly, he proved himself to be a reliable clutch performer. Bayless sent one game into overtime and won two others with key last-second shots. It's baffling how he fell to the 11th pick and Trail Blazers' GM Kevin Pritchard came out like a bandit yet again the in the draft."

that's cool

for some reason though, I’m not excited about Bayless yet. I’m not saying I won’t be, I’m just having a hard time right now seeing how he’ll play along side our Big 3, and if he’s as good as advertised he deserves to be a starter. I’m keeping an open mind however, and am eagerly anticipating the start of training camp.

Yeah

I agree, it’s hard to get excited about him. I just don’t know if I like his personality. And yes, that does matter, to me. I’d even turn down Lebron…I just don’t like him. Talent isn’t everything. So unless he wins me over (which he very well might) I’m going to be very cautious.

Just Wait

Bayless will make a game winner or a clutch steal and breakaway jam, and everyone’s going to be all “ooooooohhhh, I love that little hard-nosed devil.”

I don't like Lebron either

He’s a pompous rump.

Bayless, now that kid’s lovely, and a competitor to boot. I say his scowl will win us 5 games by itself.

Would be awesome to watch come crashing down to the court….......so long as their aren’t any Blazers on the court. Can we make it happen during the Faker game? Maybe lure kobe out there with a young lady and a chair.

Watching Darrell Dawkins destroy baskets was so much fun before they fixed the basket to yield.

The big screen – would that release a noxious cloud of poisonous gas to wipe out the arena???

Trust the staff

KP and company think Bayless is a perfect fit with Roy and company – both his personality and his game. They’ve put some time into that consideration. Needless to say, they’re good at what they do.

Two questions:

1 – did you guys watch the Suns summer league game?
2 – did you watch the post-game interview?

My guess is no and no.

I’ve only been able to watch the games online, do you know if the postgame interview is online anywhere?

by danielfarrell on Jul 22, 2008 1:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know if it's anywhere online

in it though Jerryd basically expresses that he already knows he won’t be the go to guy on the real roster. He knows the big 3 will come before him and he’s willing to pass to them and make plays for them.

You have to remember he did exactly what he was told in summer league, and his assists would have been higher if he was passing to basketball players not trees.

by Bskey on Jul 22, 2008 2:05 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Exactly

His comments and humility (he also said right off the bat, “look guys, I just sucked in the first half, didn’t get my teammates involved, I was pressing”) were all the more impressive considering how completely he had just dominated down the stretch.

The thing he said about playing a much different role in the regular season, and setting up the big three instead of scoring, wasn’t even in response to a question about the big three, either. I think the question was something like, “do you think you can continue this type of success in the regular season?” Nine out of ten guys, after just scoring 17 in the fourth and locking down the summer league MVP, would’ve said something about themselves (“I’m just going to play my game,” whatever).

His interview impressed me almost as much as his performance on the court. Definitely a likeable kid.

I don't trust Bayless

He has to win me over and I don’t trust KP drafting him. I’ve said before that he’s not good at drafting point guards and it looks like he meant to draft a point guard and instead drafted a shooting guard.

It's hard to tell if you don't have any solid references :-)

That’s probably why every year people are surprised when players in the draft measure out several inches apart from what early scouting reports said (this and the fact that “you can’t teach height” so advertising someone as taller is better).

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

by Norsktroll on Jul 22, 2008 8:04 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes

he’s four feet 1 inch right now. He just turned four a couple weeks ago. He may end up being pretty tall but I would say 6’5 is as tall as he could get… I dunno maybe he will stop growing and be 5’6 like me.,

When he works his way into the starting lineup,

There will barely ever be a 24 second shot clock violation. And Brandon will take a lot less damage because he has someone on the other side of him just as ready and capable of going straight in. I am excited, and I can’t wait. Who needs a top level point guard? If we need the steadying hand (steadier than B-Roy?) to run the game for us, bring Blake off the bench. This is going to be awesome.

I want to be tucked in by Greg Oden and have him tell us stories about the old days.

Big 4

By the end of this coming season the Big 3 is going to become the BIG 4 with the addition of its newest (and shortest) member. Seems that already, there is alot of national chatter expressing that Jarryd “The Lion Hearted” has got that “it” factor. People are quckly taking notice, and it is for one reason, he has been that special so far.

My favorite quote is

” As good as Westbrook may be, Bayless should have been the pick.”

Like the draft two years ago, KP may have once again traded his way to snare the real gem. Honestly, I think like BRoy we’ll see “it” right away in his first season. And this young man is only 19, not a 4 year college senior. Admit it, thus far this story has been nothing short of amazing.

God I love ex Celtics. Ainge, McHale and now Bird? You guys are the best!

The simply obvious answer

Is KP added Bayless, Batum and Diogu in exchange for Jack and McBob so i would say he made the team better!

Bayless on some teams would be ruined in the first year (not accounting for his heart though) and on this team is another solid asset to win more games.

Bayless and Oden, Blake and Oden, Roy and Oden, Rudy and Oden, Sergio and Oden are all awesome and that is just the beginning with LMA and each of those guys also awesome. (Note: I am attributing Sergio with average or better shooting % this year).

This team reminds me of a gatling gun in its ability to score. Got to love it!

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Bayless Fits.

I believe that Bayless fits extremely well with the players we have, and the system Mac wants to use. Mac wants Roy involved in the offense, and wants the ball in his hands in the 4th quarter. The Blazers, as such, wanted a point guard in the mold of Tony Parker, who averages only 6 apg, as opposed to a Nash or Kidd, who average 9 or 10. The Blazers want an excellent passing team, not merely one player who does all the passing. I believe Bayless will prove to be able to fill the role the Blazers have repeated on three or four occassions that they want him to play. He will learn to bring the ball up the floor and will just as often pass it off to Roy who will run a play in which Bayless then goes in motion, or he will to pass it himself. He will be expected to execute pick and rolls after giving the ball off to Roy, as well as to drive and dish. And, he will guard the opposing PG. In essence, when he’s on the floor with Roy, they will expect the PG duties to be as much Roy’s responsibility as Bayless’s. This emphasizes the strengths of both players. Bayless is clearly an offensive force and will only improve with practice. After all, he’s still 19. After 40 games, he’ll have the equivalent of another college season under his belt. And, as KP said, after 40 games, he’ll have it figured out. I happen to believe that KP was being perfectly out front when he said they always had Bayless pegged as the 4th best player, just slightly below Mayo. He also said very early on that he felt that there was not much separation between the 5 to 15. And, this clearly indicates that he thought there was separation between the top 4, including Bayless, and the rest of the players in the draft. And, given what we’ve seen, we have no reason to dispute this.

As far as like-ability, I’m always a little mystified by these comments. The first requisite of teams, after all, is winning. If Bayless is a solid contributor to winning, how could anyone “not” like him. After all, I imagine we could just love a bunch of teddy bears, but they’d also lose a lot more games. And then, I suspect we wouldn’t love them so much.

The very good players always bring something other than athleticism to the table. Bayless appears to have that extra something. Maybe his intensity, drive and determination put off some people, but when you start playing for championships, you’re going to need that to win. So, if that’s his biggest rap – I’ve already forgiven him.

Great points about Bayless playing alonside Roy. I picture Bayless playing really well without the ball. He’s quick enough to weave through traffic, ala rip hamilton, and strong enough to take it hard to the hole and absorb contact like Roy. He’s not going to be the one directing traffic, he’s going to be the one with many scoring opportunities because he’ll be playing off some great players with Roy, LMA, Oden and whoever we plug in at SF. He’ll also have quite a few points off the fast break this year, the way he flies up and down the court.

Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game

by iDea on Jul 23, 2008 11:42 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

one more thing

He’s a strong enough ball handler that he’ll have no problems bringing the ball up the court. That is the what his PG duties will entail. He’ll kick off a few plays, but for the most part, Roy’s going to handle the QB duties.

Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game

by iDea on Jul 23, 2008 11:44 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Word

If Bayless can defend enemy PGs, hit a jumper, and dribble the ball up court and either drive when there or throw it into Oden or LMA, he’ll be perfect next to halfcourt Roy.

It’s suh-weet.

Normally I don’t like undersized SG types, but usually because they can’t guard SG or PGs (such as Barbosa, Eric n’ Ben Gordan, Dixon, etc). As long as Bayless can defend a quick PG, he can play right alongside Roy nooooo problem.

As a fan, I don't expect that I'll be sitting down

and having brews with any of the players. So, for me, likebility = fun to watch, helps the team win, doesn’t screw up the team chemistry.

Bayless seems to bring an intensity and focus we seem to get only from Roy and then mainly in the 4th quarter. I have I hunch that Bayless eats his breakfast with that intensity and that makes him very likeable indeed.
