Lebron a blazer?

What if?

i just keep on dreaming....him and roy in the backcourt would be like MJ and Pippen....pure greatness... The only difference would be that we'd also have Oden down low holding things down...

I know, i know...it could never happen. But what if? What would it take?

Could we do it without giving up roy or oden? unlikely....but what about in a year and a half when lebron is ready to opt out..... would clevland consider it?

How about if we gave them a developed Lamarcus, Travis, Martell, Rudy, and Bayless, along with a bunch of future first and second rounders......

Pretty sure they're not gonna get any better deals than that, unless LA offers up Kobe. Or New Orleans offers up CP3.

Call me crazy. Call me a dreamer...Maybe i'm just bleeding black and red...but nothing would make me happier than to see lebron in a blazer uniform, playing along side roy and oden.

We're already gonna be unstoppable. This would just make us more unstoppable...

Anyway, with the lack of blazer news out there lately, ideas like these keep floating through my head......

No Lebron

Not only am I uninterested in getting Lebron (we are going to have a fantastic team, just let it develop), I am not a fan of the trade you proposed. What makes our team so strong now is its depth, and you’re effectively eliminating it with one trade. That just doesn’t sit well with me. In my opinion, let Lebron languish on the Knicks, nets or some other terrible Eastern Conference team while the Blazers dominate the West.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people

Only two ways to get LeBron

(1) He opts out of his contract, becomes an unrestricted free agent, and signs with Portland.

(2) Greg Oden—and that’s only if he is the beast we all expect him to be and has no more injury or health issues.

Everything the pundits have written about LeBron leaving the Cavs has him going either to the Knicks or Nets. There’s been no mention of the Blazers in those discussions.

Assuming GO does stay healthy, I wouldn’t trade him for LeBron. He’s much funnier.

Yikes

LeBron + another star(Roy, Oden) = championships.

I will say it now, I fear LeBron as a blazer fan. He could easily be the MJ to our 90’s blazers. That dude is flat out scary all in his lonesome. With another legitimate star?? Cold sweats and nausea for the next 15 years….

I totally agree...

like I said below, if Lebron can drag a D-league caliber Cavs team to the finals, he could very easily thwart all-comers with an adequate supporting cast. I fear Lebron and whoever his four cronies are more than LA or Utah combined in the future.

It's not gonna happen

And would be dumb of us to do, BUT WHAT IF—

LMA becomes a top 10 PF, dominant at times, and our leading scorer. Bayless becomes a dunking shooting Tony Parker. Travis wins 6th man of the year.

And then Lebron lets the Cavs know he is NOT re-signing with them after his 3 year deal is up (2010). They gotta get something for him, because he’s just going to leave otherwise (similar to us and Sheed).

So, the best deal for the Cavs turns out to be a LMA, Bayless, Trout package. Most teams are scared off of trading talent for Lebron, because everyone believes he is signing with the Brooklyn Nets. No one thinks they can keep Lebron on their team even if they put together a deal the Cavs agree to (and if he isn’t going to re-sign with them (which I believe is what will happen, he’s leaving the Cavs), they HAVE to move him or they’ve lost the most valuable asset in the entire NBA for nothing). So Portland rolls the dice, moves some key players who are very good, and gets Lebron for the end of the season run.

The Blazers are criticized for moving an allstar and leading scorer in LMA, a young PG scorer in Bayless, and the 6th man of the year, but no one can deny Lebron is worth it—but no one believes he will stay in Portland (because he won’t).

However, the Blazers win a championship with Oden, Lebron, and Roy. People talk dynasty. Paul Allen buys Lebron an island.

We have his Bird rights, and can sign him to as much as legally possible. He remains a Blazer.

TO BE CLEAR: While I wholeheartedly believe that Lebron IS leaving Cleveland and that they will be FORCED to trade him or somehow get something back for him (perhaps a sign n’ trade for whatever the Nets or Knicks got that is good, so that Lebron can be paid like the Knicks or Nets had his Bird rights—like how Rashard got the extra years and extra money from Orlando), and I believe all non-New York teams will be scared off from trading for Lebron before his deal is up, and I do think in a perfect world where our players develop as we hope that COULD be good enough to get Lebron because the market will be bad for Cleveland because everyone knows Lebron’s intentions, I do not believe this will happen in a million years.

My main point is: Lebron HAS to be traded for Cleveland to get anything for him, and he is NOT going to stay a Cavalier. He’s the best player in the NBA in my opinion, the most dominant individual around, and no one is worth him. BUT, for the Cavs to get anything for him, they’ll have to take what they can get.

In the end, I believe it will be a sign n’ trade between the Cavs and the Nets, where the Cavs get the best pieces the Nets will give up so that Lebron can get paid like he stayed in Cleveland but get to be in Brooklyn, as fate decided long ago. If the Cavs don’t like the pieces the Nets are willing to give up and won’t cooperate, then Lebron leaves anyways.

No matter what, the Cavs are getting screwed here.

Ya know… if teams are scared off enough from trading for Lebron and the Nets don’t got the right pieces for it to be attractive to make a sign n’ trade from the Cavs POV, maybe cash, draft picks, Euro talent, and non-Big 3 pieces could work.

Obviously this is all academic, except for the part about Lebron leaving Cleveland. He is leaving Cleveland.

And that means in 2010 the Cavs are going to get majorly screwed one way or another.

Shorter version

The Blazers will not ever trade for him because he would never want to be a Blazer even if we got the talent to make the deal, but the larger issue is that the Cavs HAVE HAVE HAVE to trade Lebron before his deal is up or take part in a sign n’ trade or they will lose Lebron for nothing.

So, trade scenarios for Lebron do not necessarily have to include the Kobe’s, Wade’s, Oden’s of the NBA (yup I put Oden there I am a homer).

lol you are doing bridged versions of your posts now Morti?

And I agree. We have a lot of young talent, more than New Jersey, New York, Miami, can offer, so if Cleveland feels like they can get a pu-pu-platter deluxe in 2009 instead of just a pu-pu-platter in 2010 they might take that offer.

Whenever a team trades a super star they always get lesser value in return. That’s just how it works. Getting LMA, Bayless, and Travis is a lot better than 1st round pick, a 2nd tier player, and an expiring contract that they will likely get instead.

here's my question

does LBJ care more about playing in a big market, or winning a championship? If things work out the way you say (with Aldridge/Bayless/Outlaw), it would seem that the chances of winning a title outside of Portland are infinitesimal, (unless the eastern all stars all join the same team or something.) If Portland is that good and LBJ wants to leave Cleveland that bad, Portland would have all the leverage to force a sign and trade. Cleveland would obviously prefer to do a sign and trade than let LBJ leave as an unrestricted, so the only obstacles to a sign and trade in the situation you are considering is if another team offers a better deal, or if LBJ obstinately chooses not to sign and takes the QO. Either way, Portland doesn’t get hurt.

If we could get him and still keep Roy and Oden, I would do it. I don’t think hew wants to play here though, so it’s a moot point.

For Lebron,

I would trade a package including Oden in a heartbeat. Not Roy though. If we could do it giving up Oden/Rudy/Travis/Martell (or some such combination), I’d be daft not to pull the trigger. However, LeBron’s contract doesn’t really work for us. At the least, we would have to pull off some sort of sign and trade with Cleveland, or pick him up as a free agent, and either deal would be a challenge.

Well it's not going to happen but...

Oden has the potential to be one of the best that played the game, LMA doesn’t. So that’s why I would try to keep Oden. Even then though, it really wouldn’t matter. Roy/Lebron/LMA would still be championship contenders.

Am I the only one curious

As to how Lebron would play with a stacked team? I mean lets face it, the Cleveland Lebrons don’t really have anyone who could take away from his do everything game.

I’m not saying he isn’t as great as he is but how good would he really play alongside a Roy, or LMA or Oden? The guy plays best when he has to be the one doing it all, which he wouldn’t be for 99% of the games on a team like ours.

I love watching him play and would be pretty happy to see him in a Blazer uniform (as long as we didn’t give up someone important) but I really don’t think we’d see the same Lebron here as we do in Cleveland.

by Bskey on Jul 22, 2008 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

He won't get 30 ppg

But 25? Yeah probably. The thing about Lebron is that as good as he is right now, he still has a lot of untapped potential. If Lebron learns a few post moves and refines his shot, he will literally be unguardable. Put him on a team like Blazers with guys like Roy and Oden to pass the ball too? That might be ranked as the best team in the history of the NBA.

I don’t really know what you mean by the same Lebron. But he would still be the most powerful and devastating fast break player in the game, on the Blazers he just wouldn’t have to take so many bad shots in the half court offense.

Even if we had to give up LMA, Bayless, and Travis we would still have Martell, Rudy and Frye left to shore up our rotation. Do you think anyone in the NBA could stop Lebron when he has Rudy, Roy, and Oden to pass too? The man already nearly averages 8 assists per game! Of course this would never happen but that lineup might win like 8 titles.

Don't get me wrong

I don’t mean to say he would be a worse player here than in Cleveland. I’m just saying you would see a lot less explosive games from him most likely, and his averages will suffer, with assists most likely rising a bit.

That’s what I mean by no longer the same Lebron, you couldn’t really expect 30ppg from him when playing on this team unless we gave up so much to get him that the rest of our team becomes pretty mediocre.

It’s nice to imagine LBJ, Roy and Oden working together but we have yet to see how LBJ performs when playing with above average team mates for an entire season. In a perfect world they would mesh well together and dominate all who oppose them. What could happen is either Lebron comes in with the “lebron is the man” attitude and takes away from other peoples games, maybe ball hogs a bit when he should be passing and getting other players involved. On the opposite end Lebron gets paid, he’s not longer then only option on offense and he doesn’t have to be the man so he gets a bit lazy and his game suffers.

I don’t see James going to the extreme on either side of those scenarios but it’s happened before. He would be one of the best possible pick ups for ANY team, but you shouldn’t just assume he’ll do for your team what he does for Cleveland, especially when your team isn’t built that way.

by Bskey on Jul 22, 2008 3:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Lebron has always been a very willing passer

Even at the end of games when he should shoot it.

Averaging so many assists with such bad teammates is a good sign, if ya ask me.

The only bad thing James does offensively is jack up way too many bad 3 point shots, and he gets to do that for the Cavs because he is Lebron. Hopefully he either improves his shot enough, or matures past that bad shot.

He can make the 3 (obviously, considering what he did to us at the Rose Garden), but he’s not good at it and shoots it a LOT.

Lebron has always been willing to pass to open teammates and help set people up. I’d think he’d play even better if he had good players to pass to. He’ll never be a Blazer, but if he got a good big man and more good shooters around him, he could easily average double digit assists. He’s a good passer, and has never been selfish.

I don’t see why that would change if he had players WORTH passing to.

but if there is anyway to get Lebron at this point, even if it involves Oden, KP would be remiss not to consider. He singlehandedly drug a d-league caliber team to the finals last year and was a few bad bounces and questionable calls away from beating Boston this year. The dude is legit and will more than likely go down as one of the top 2 players in history. If a team has the option to get him they MUST consider it no matter the cost.

by erastus25 on Jul 22, 2008 8:07 PM PDT reply actions

LeBron's fav five (he did mention Portland at some time, but not now)

James had little interest in directly addressing his free-agent options in 2010, but he didn’t blink when asked about it in a different way: “LeBron, what are your favorite cities?”

“My favorite cities are New York; Washington, D.C.; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, Calif., and Akron, Ohio,” he said.

A week later, when asked to name his favorite city he said: "New York." Favorite borough? "Brooklyn," James said. "Brooklyn is definitely a great place here in New York City, and some of my best friends are from Brooklyn, so I stick up for them."
-

If winning a title is the most important thing for him, why would he want to go to New York, knowing that the Knicks won’t have that many pieces around him (so he would basically have the same situation as in Cleveland, only in his favorite city). New Jersey might be in a better position by 2010, but not hugely better. He will still have to carry the team on his broad shoulders a lot of times. And probably he likes it that way.

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

If I'm Cleveland

that would be really weird, because I’d be a city. Rimshot!

But seriously, the Cavs will know by the 2010 trading deadline whether LeBron is staying or going. If he is going, they won’t feel inclined to let him walk for nothing, nor to agree to trade him to a team like the Knicks or Nets that will have few if any players they will want in return.

Also, if LeBron wants to leave the Cavs, he won’t want them to trade him to a team that must gut itself to get him, aka The Kobe Dilemma. He wants his new team to have at least one star he can play with.

I can think of one team that in February, 2010 will have so many young, cheap, and talented players that both the Cavs and LeBron would be pleased with the result of a trade. The Blazers could trade, for example, LMA, Roy, and Outlaw to the Cavs for LeBron. That would provide them with an instant core and make them contenders in the Eastern Conference. LeBron would go to a team that features Oden, Rudy, and Bayless, and the Blazers would be a powerhouse in the West.

This deal doesn’t get done if the Cavs are greedy, or if KP thinks the LeBron Blazers would not be better than the LMA & Roy Blazers, or if LeBron cares more about being in New York than he does about winning a title.

Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."

Honestly man,

call me a homer, but I’d rather keep Roy and Outlaw and dump Rudy/Bayless (if they perform at a high level, this should be possible at midseason 2009-2010). Frankly though, I doubt we get LeBron for just Roy and LMA. I would love to see LMA, Rudy and Bayless for LeBron. I would only want to trade Roy if we could get LeBron for him straight up. It’s not even blatant homerism here, it’s just an unusual attachment to the idea of Roy as a blazer for life. Think D-Rose in Chicago or LeBron in Cleveland, these players identify to their teams. I see Roy as the quintessential Blazer more so than any other player on this team. I know that LeBron is much more talented than Roy, but I would rather see Roy in a Blazer uniform for life and win Portland only 3-4 titles than have LeBron wear the Blazer uniform and win 7-8 or something ludicrous like that. Now Oden for LeBron i could learn to love. How bout Rudy, Outlaw and Oden for LeBron? That would add Bayless and LeBron to our 41 win roster. How sick is that? Can you even imagine Bayless, Roy, LeBron, Aldridge and our 5 on the floor at the same time? That would be OFF THE HOOK!

I think Lebron

Thinks he’ll look much more ‘right’ in a Brooklyn jersey.

His on-purpose short contract, his love of New York, his Jay-Z worship, quest to be a Global Icon, everything points to the kid breaking Cleveland’s heart. For the Cavs sake, I hope they find a way to get SOMETHING for him.

Perhaps after 2 more years in the lottery, either of the NY teams got good youth to trade with.

I get your main point though—I wouldn’t want to trade Brandon Roy or Oden or LMA for most anyone even if the player traded for is ‘better’, because I am totally attached to the idea of them being Blazers right now. I want a great team, but when we got great players who I love I want to keep them at all costs.

I am a homer.

I do not think we’d get Lebron or even try for him in a billion years, but I know the only way Cleveland gets anything of value for him is if they trade him before he breaks their heart.

So, I don’t think I’m TOO crazy to imagine trade scenarios for the Living Legend, because he doesn’t want to stay in Cleveland and he took a very short deal because of this.

I do not know him personally of course, going on his attitude, what I’ve read, and gut based hunches.

I hear what you’re saying about Roy being a Blazer for life, but I feel that way about Oden, too. And as good as Roy already is and will be, Oden’s ceiling is higher AND he’s a center. Maybe the Cavs would insist on Oden and you’d get your wish, but if I HAD to choose which one to keep, I’d GO with the extra 3-4 championships.

Idle thot: Cleveland fans must love it when fans of other teams speculate about stealing LeBron from them… Reminds me of when Kobe was demanding a trade last summer and some Laker fan commented somewhere that they should trade Kobe to Portland for GO. I was offended and amused at the same time.

Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."

i remember that....

pretty sure they offered us kobe ariza for oden outlaw…..

im glad we turned it down though

on a side note…im glad this post got so many responses. even though its crazy, i think theres still some validity. trading any of our core should only be considered for somebody on an LBJ level..probly not gonna happen, but its worth ponderin

btw, this is my first actual post….commented a bunch….but never posted until now

I don't believe you

when you say you feel the same way about Oden as a blazer as you do about Roy. I don’t believe it because for me, the vision of Roy PLAYING in a blazers uni has been already realized, and is a visceral experience. Oden PLAYING in a blazers uni is AT THIS TIME an abstract vision. For that reason alone, I believe that trading Oden is easier (for me), because he is easier to look at as a piece or asset than Roy. I’m not saying that Roy is a more valuable asset than Oden, I’m saying that Roy makes more sense to me as a Blazer because I’ve already seen him play in the uni. Now in a year, things might and will change dramatically.

Let me make this clear: as a Blazer fan, I am salivating over the direction this team is going, and truly feel that this current group is completely ready for a championship run for the long haul. We have players that will enter their early prime in the next 2-5 years (Roy/Outlaw/Fernandez/Aldridge) and players about 6-7 years away from entering their primes (Bayless/Oden/Batum). That kind of staggering of ages of stars will be excellent for us. Thus I could care less whether we managed to somehow swindle LeBron from the Cavs or not. However, dreaming about it is fun, because he is one of the most exciting players to play the game. As a fan of the player, I would be sad to see him leave Cleveland, not because he might be more dangerous in Brooklyn or on the Knicks, but simply because I subscribe to the whole player identifying with a particular team philosophy. LeBron in a Knicks or Nets uni just sounds wrong to me.

lebron in a knicks uniform would be like earl monroe leavin the bullets for NY

like earl…he may end up winning a championship there…
but he wont be the same player….not like earl was with the bullets, averaging 42ppg the whole season..maybe, depends who surrounds him….

anyway, thats moot…

basically i’m just worried about lebron being mj to our 90’s blazers….

maybe oden is enough of a beast that it doesnt matter….sure hope so…. but if lebron finds a counterpart, things could get scary..

i think oden and roy could be like kobe and shaq, but still id be willing to bet mj and pippen would take those two in a playoff series….lbj is basically mj, he just hasnt found pippen…..

If a team were gonna trade for LeBron, the deal should be done now..

............................... Because he’s going to NYC otherwise.

You’d have to take the leap of faith that dishing out fabulous prizes for a rent-a-player was worth it, in terms of being able to possibly resign the man.

He’s not gonna want to be a Blazer, but the time to deal for someone is NOW.

no

We should wait till the trading deadline in the 2009-2010 season. That gives us the maximum leverage with the Cavs, and allows us to set the rules. If LeBron chooses not to play by them (IE a sign and trade), then we don’t touch him and let him decide his destination.

The beautiful flip side! And this time it's our boy Ray Ray making a very unsurprising cameo. This is for the 2011-2012 season.

Note that Danny Granger, the best shooter in the NBA two slots closer to the center of the court, is actually the worst from this spot.
