Jerryd Bayless poll, post-Vegas edition

Right after the draft, I did a poll concerning when and if J-Rex would find himself in the starting lineup.  (Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time finding a link to that poll)

Now that he's the Vegas MVP and helping the Olympians train, it's time to ask the question again.

When/if will Bayless crack the starting lineup on a full-time basis.  Starts due to injury of someone ahead of him on the depth chart don't count; I'm only interested in when he'll be at the top of the depth chart.

My thoughts:  It may not be on opening night--JB will have to beat Blake for the position--but it will be this season.  The main thing for JB will be to become a competent NBA defender; at least better than Blake, which he should be able to do.  Especially against smaller guards; as bigger guards will probably have little trouble shooting over Bayless and his teeny tiny arms.

Poll
When will JB be a full-time starter for the Blazers?
  • Opening day
  • Before New Years Day
  • Before the All-Star Game
  • Before the end of the regular season
  • During the 2009 playoffs
  • Next season or later
  • He won't ever start for the Blazers, but he'll be a key contributor off the bench
  • Summer league is summer leauge. He's this year's Bellinelli; and will be a scrub (or worse) in the NBA.

I'm sticking to

after the all star game. Might be before, but around that time period sounds good to me. He definitely has some things to work on though.

I still don't see him

as a p.g. so will wait patiently with hands folded to see how he becomes part of the team. Maybe Rudy gets fed up and returns to Europe or BRoy has to take some time off for injuries or another kid … but right now I’m not convinced JB is a starting pg. Integrating Brandon & Rudy & Jerryd is going to be interesting.

Situational

I don’t think starting is that big a deal, especially not to Nate. I think Nate and KP care more about minutes and PT distribution. I also think they value 4th quarter minutes more highly than opening tipoff minutes. For those reasons, the “starter” category is not that highly descriptive for the way Nate runs this team. I think it’s a status thing that has been made much of in the media and probably means a lot to quite a few players, but has little arguable significance in how basketball is actually played.

That being said, I think Bayless could start quite early (I actually voted for after the All-Star break), but it will be very situational. It will depend a lot on the matchups with the team we’re playing against, and also with what players the other team has starting and backing them up. There are certain games where the offense and drives to the hoop that Bayless provides may be more helpful than the steady leadership that Blake gives, and I think Nate will take that into account when setting his lineups.

The way that Bayless plays with Roy will determine it, mostly. With Bayless’s drive to improve and Roy’s incredible awareness of both basketball the game and team dynamics, I could see them clicking at a high level almost immediately. If that’s the case, I don’t think Nate would hold back Bayless if playing him gave the team the best chance to win.

I think that Bayless will hold onto the 4th quarter minutes by New Years.

pretty sure thats rudy's territory....

from everything i’ve seen and heard. Rudy looks poised at the end of games and can hit the big shots.. should be another fourth quarter guy, just like trav…

I see our 4th Quarter line up as

BRoy-1 or (if we wanna go small) BRoy-1
Rudy-2 Bayless-2
Outlaw-3 Rudy-3
Aldridge-4 Outlaw-4
Oden-5 Aldridge/Oden-5

This team is so stacked, we have so many options….its nuts..

Good point. Bayless and Rudy

will probably compete for key fourth quarter minutes opposite Roy + Outlaw. My guess, without having seen Rudy play, is that Rudy starts out in that role early (as the more experienced guy) and Bayless supplants him by the all-star break.

If Bayless brings that much intensity to the fourth quarter of a summer league game, imagine how crazy he’ll get for real games. He may actually decapitate somebody with his laser-glare…

I Voted for later

because I do not see him moving in front of Roy and Blake for a while. What I saw in SL 2 games that I was able to attend is that he appears to be more of a scorer than a distributor that Roy & Blake are. I also think that his outside shot needs work even tho he is able to make some from out to the 3point line.

Of course the SL team did not have a lot of talented bigs so he be a better distributor than I think.

I think he will make an impact

I don’t think he will be a starter this year and maybe even next year. It will take him some time to learn the offense and Nate won’t just hand him the job. He will have to beat out Blake and Sergio at the point or Rudy at the 2 to start. That will be tough.

He might be traded before he ever starts.

I’m not necessarily predicting that happens, but it wouldn’t surprise me. When it came our turn in this years draft, KP picked the best player available. That doesn’t mean Jerryd is a good fit for our team. And if that route is chosen, he will probably have good trade value.

I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

by TwoDeep on Jul 21, 2008 10:03 PM PDT   0 recs

Doubtful

that he is traded, no ones gonna gamble and give us something better from only watching him in summer league. I say KP at least evaluates him this season to find out if he is really our point guard of the future.

He still has alot to learn, which is also why I dont see him starting til after next season. If he cant play the point he will be traded to a team that needs a scoring 2 guard. He’s not gonna see much meaningful time at the 2 behind Roy and Rudy, even Webster for that matter. If he catches onto the point guard role he’s gonna see alot more PT but the learning curve is much greater.

Yes, I agree with your time-line if a trade should come about

for the reasons you stated.

He might not start, but he's gonna get

critical minutes because, until we’ve seen how Rudy pans out, he’s the only one on the team who looks to be able to replace Jack’s willingness to go to the rack in crunch time.

Listen to KP

Listen to KP. They drafted Bayless as a complement to Roy, who is a special talent. They did not draft, nor want to draft, a pure PG, because they don’t need one. They wanted someone who could defend the opposing PG well, who could take some wear off of Roy by bringing the ball up the court and then passing to Roy to run the play while getting into the offensive flow, someone who could drive and dish, and someone to add fire and steel. That’s what they got. They fully expect Bayless and Fernandez to both eventually supplant Blake. Blake is a solid performer, but he doesn’t bring the offensive game to the table that the Blazers want in the 4th quarter and at other times when they put the ball in Roy’s hands to run the offense. My observation is that Blake, overtime, will be the ideal 4th guard on this team. Right now, he’s the ideal vet. But don’t over-rate him. If they didn’t believe that Bayless and Fernandez were not going to be better over-all players, they wouldn’t have drafted them. But they did.

As far as trading Bayless, I don’t know where that idea comes from. Other, perhaps, than from the perspective that he isn’t a “pure pg”. as long as Roy is on this team, you’ll likely never see a “Nash” or “Stockton” type PG. You might see a Parker type PG, but Parker only gets 6 apg. The other assists are distributed throughout the other players. And that’s precisely how KP and Mac view the Blazers. A team that distributes and passes well, not just one player. And in this scheme – Bayless fits well.

I Agree

Listen to KP. He said shortly after the regular season ended that he wanted to bring more speed and athleticism to the back court. Bayless has these qualities and more in spades, Blake does not. I think he’ll be inserted into the starting lineup as soon as we go on our first 3 game losing streak this year…. or if teams start jumping out to leads in the first quarter.

by snudger on Jul 22, 2008 9:09 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i agree somewhat.....

but youre kidding yourself when you say that we arent looking for a pure point guard.. cuz i mean, just because we dont “need” one, doesn’t mean we dont want one..(we want one really bad).....the greats only come along once in a while (ala cp3), and if we can, we’re gonna snatch them up… catch is, there wasnt a great pure point in this draft. Even derrick rose, to me, seems overrated. him being drafted number one was really a stretch, and seems like just a clear overreaction to chris paul….i say all this because having that pure 1, only takes pressure off brandon…see how cp3 and Broy worked in the allstar game, kinda like that. yea, brandon can do it all, but do we want him to?....it’s my opinion you need two leaders in the back court. one just needs to differ to the other in crunch time..

So, as great as brandon roy is, we do need another quick guard that also “sees the floor.” that’s not bayless’s mo..he’s a scorer. My hope is that rudy, with his great bball iq can fill that role…..crossing my fingers though…

Remember..Even michael jordan had pippen bring the ball down court…and dont give me any crap about pippen playing the wing…he was a real point guard, straight up and down….that’s what we need.

Your comment:
If they didn’t believe that Bayless and Fernandez were not going to be better over-all players, they wouldn’t have drafted them. But they did

Why is that the only scenario? As the post above yours pointed out, the Blazers very well could have selected Bayless because they believed he was the best player available at our draft position. KP has often stated that this is the philosophy he usually follows.

And I’m not saying Blake is the answer to our dreams at PG. But neither, I suspect, is Bayless. Based on only a few very unimportant Summer League games, I wonder if he is a point guard at all. Down the road, I’m thinking Koponen could be our guy … maybe … and it’s also too early to discount Sergio.

I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

It's summer league !

Wait until he runs into real NBA veterans and
let’s see how he fares. Steve Blake is a tested
veteran PG. He has a high assist to TO ratio,
dosen’t demand shots and plays decent defense
(especially in the zone). He also hit 40 +% on
his threes. He’s going to hard to bump from his
job.
I forsee J-Rex being part of a great white unit
with TO, Rudy, Pryz and Buffet. Pryz will set the
screens and JRex will curl for the jumper or attack.

COINCAST, COINCAST COINCAST, why won’t you
do a DEAL ? BLAZERVISION, PLEASE !

It's GO time !
