3 R.O.Y. Candidates. 1 team.

Is it possible to have 3 rookie of the year Candidates on one team?

No.  I guess not.  That would be crazy.  Unheard of. Out of the question.

Oh wait.  Unless that team is the 08-09 Portland TRAIL BLAZERS!

Fellas, (and lady fellas)  we have ourselves a conundrum. Lets bang on it.

Granted the ROY usually goes to a talented rookie on a weaker team where he can put up a 100 shots a game, and that's not gonna happen on this loaded weapon 1 line-up that we currently have.

BUT STILL.  Its fun to talk about and get excited for.

SO:

Who do you think has the best chance of being rookie of the year (on the Blazers).

None of the rookies besides GO are gonna be getting enough playing time to put up enough big numbers…so in otherwords…its gotta be GO!

But let’s lose the Lincoln malarky, please.

I liked "Black Lincoln"

THE EMANCIPATOR, freeing us from our ring-less fingers!

All I want is 40 championships and a mule, pal. Reparations for the Jail Blazer years, the 2000 WCF, running into Jordan, the Pistons, Walton getting hurt, Sam Bowie, ALL OF THAT.

Oden will free us from everything that has chained this franchise down.

I love Oden The Black Lincoln, or the Emancipator, lol. It’s not going to catch on outside of BEdge but it doesn’t matter.

He can still be your personal ROY

Even if he doesn’t make the All-Rookie team (or the Blazers rotation for that matter). Everybody on the roster needs supporters, otherwise “Trading X or Y” discussions wouldn’t be fun ;-)

Why don't you just ask him to marry you and be done with it?

I’m sure that you can send a marriage proposal to him via the team’s PR department.

Stop the swooning and start making some moves, baby! Send him some flowers or something. Jump his bones if you get a chance. Take him into the supply room and have your way with him.

Where have all the flowers gone?

On the Blazers, I go with Oden as the ROY

League-wide, GO will have to battle it out with Beasley and maybe Mayo, I presume. Though Rose might have the better career long term, he has little chance to become the top rookie. And while Rudy has the most experience and a spectacular game, he won’t get enough playing time behind ROY Roy, yet should be able to demonstrate enough of his abilities to get a nod for the rookie selection at the All-Star break and/or after the regular season (maybe second team).

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

by Norsktroll on Jul 21, 2008 8:42 AM PDT reply actions

GO is the go guy

This could all shift by mid-season. Then it will get interesting. By then, we could have a three guard rotation with Roy at 35 min’s, and Bayless and Fernandez at 25-30. Blake could be down to 10. Sergio would simply sit on the pines. And those kinds of minutes could get both Bayless and Fernandez some pretty good stats. Still, I think GO is the most likely candidate. But it doesn’t mean we won’t have another one or two on the all rookie team.

As far as the others, Mayo’s and Beasely seem to be the current choice. However, Bayless has one thing Mayo doesn’t have, which is his motor. And that motor might give him better stats than Mayo. As far as Fernandez, we’ll simply have to wait and see. However, given how right KP has been proven to be on Bayless, you have to wonder about Rudy. KP’s always said he’d have been a top 10 pick in this years draft.

Also, has any team in the NBA ever had three rookies come in in one year like this group?

I’ll bet the answer is no. Two, maybe. But three? Unheard of.

by Eben Calder on Jul 21, 2008 9:22 AM PDT reply actions

How can we be sure that

Blake will be down to 10 minutes? That is terribly minimal and especially for the guy that ran, succesfully , the offense last season. I am not convinced that Bayless is going to come in and snap up all the PT from one of our proven and effective vets . He will get pt but not that much and Blakey will still be our main PG.

Regarding Rudy, well only time will tell. I think he is going to light up some nights and struggle others, frankly because the defense in the NBA is lightyears ahead of that in his league.

Good post though.

The defense in Europe (top leagues) isn't worse than in the NBA

Despite the soft image, the game in Europe under FIBA rules is a tough one. Case in point: New German citizen Chris Kaman playing in the Olympic qualifier stating something along the lines of “man, they play rugby out there. We don’t have that in the NBA”.
More zone defense. Moving blocks. Pushing and hand checking. Other goaltending rules. Still taking charges directly under the basket. So it’s different, but the NBA isn’t light years ahead by any stretch of the imagination. Rudy will be fine playing against NBA competition.

Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

by Norsktroll on Jul 21, 2008 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions

Just from my narrow point of view because I have not watched much w/ my own eyes

I saw soft all around. Perhaps the team was just inferior in general and of course there are terrible defensive teams in the NBA but I saw slow movement on pretty basic screen sets. Also, the way the zone played out seemed pretty fundamental to me- basically it would be easy for someone as good as Rudy to read a basic zone and blow through it.
Again, however, my frame of referance is pretty limited so im not saying im absolutely correct.

GO in a landslide

(1) ROY voters like players that make a huge impact. GO’s amazing strength and athleticism, plus his sheer beastliness and gap-toothed-grin marketing marvellosity and magnetic charisma will put him way ahead of the rookpack.

(2) The Blazers will jump to 50+ wins this season and GO will get the credit for it.

(3) As jjudd43 wrote, other rookies will have to play the kind of minutes Oden will play even to have a chance to compete with him for the ROY. That pretty much eliminates J-Bay and Rudy from contention, as well as most of the rooks on other teams.

Asked his specialty in the kitchen, Oden paused and said, "Hamburger Helper and tuna fish."

3 ROY Candidates =

Are You Kidding Me?

Wait, no you’re not. With Jerryd “The Heart of a Lion” Bayless roaring onto the scene, our wildest summertime dreams have amped up yet another level.

3 ROY candidates in one year + BRoy/LMA/G.O. = one very special time in Blazer history.

This kinda stuff just isn’t supposed to happen.

If we win 50+ games it will be because Oden dominates the paint. GO will thus win the ROY, this despite the outside shooting/slashing display of Rudy and the passion and ferocious play of JB.

50+ wins = G.O. is ROY

at NBA All-Star Weekend, the league throws together a team of all the best non-PTB rookies and sophomores. That team plays against the Blazers.

ESPN-TrueHoops

ESPN ranks Rudy #5 on their list of the top 50 rookies. That’s #5. How’s that for what some people think of Fernandez? Makes KP’s assertion that Fernandez would’ve been a top 10 pick all the more credible.

by Eben Calder on Jul 21, 2008 11:41 AM PDT reply actions

this is fun

but really there’s only one award that matters: the Larry O’brien trophy. And its coming home to P-town in the VERY NEAR future. I can’t wait for the hyperbole that Walton is going to spew as his dilated pupils weep salty tears of joy and his soul swims in bottomless pools of delight and lollipops.

That said: I think Senor Fernandez is going to put up a few HUGE games. We know that BRoy isn’t going to play all 82. And when he sits one out and RUDY catches FUEGO. Look out below! I wouldn’t be surprised if he drops 40+ a few times this next season.

Thanks for everyone who answered the poll. OneLove from rainy Amsterdam.

I don't want to be a heretic,

but do you see bayless or fernandez ever outshining Brandon at some point in the “blazer dynasty?” Obviously right now Roy is the unquestioned leader of the franchise, but these things do change. To be honest, I would prefer Roy to be the permanent leader of this “dynasty”, but we just have so many guys with potential…I dunno if Roy has more talent than ALL of them.

I'm a rec whore, so sue me.

But I still think Roy’s leadership abilities and calm demeanor will always make him the head honcho.

then,

do you guys see Roy becoming like a (dare I say it) Derek Fisher type of leader, where he has to coexist and actually defer to Bryant in most scenarios, or do you see him being an MJ type leader (or maybe something in between that hasn’t been emulated by any teams before). I personally would like for Roy to become our “MJ”, but obviously that is asking for a bit much from anyone. To make it simple, the fact is that I would prefer that Roy be hailed as the next MJ rather than Oden be hailed as the next dominant center, but obviously that just isn’t how it shakes out right now.

I'm a rec whore, so sue me.

Think the old Knicks

Roy is Walt Frazier.

But then there was Willis Reed, the phenomenal center.

And Bill Bradley.

And Dave Debusschere.

So many guys could absolutely kill you.

Debusschere did more to beat the L@kers over seven games than Reed did, but Reed got the attention. But Reed was the real thing, for sure.

And Frazier? He just made sure that Reed had a chance to be the hero. He certainly “coexisted” and “deferred” to the other guys a LOT, but still managed to make the all-league team every year.

I hope Roy is never our MJ. We’ve got too many weapons for that. I hope he’s our Walt Frazier.
