Junk Drawer - July 21, 2008
Just thought I would start this up since there's none at the top right now... and decided to bring back the original name too. A lot of names have been thrown around, so I thought there could be a poll for fun. Since this is informal and it's really up to Dave after today, I just went with some popular ones that I remember off the top of my head. My bad if I missed some, go ahead and post away in the comments.

Dang it, I just posted one as well! Here's some of the links I had made for mine. I'll go delete the post....

That is why I liked Junk Drawer
It isn’t that important but let’s throw it out there and see…
Trail mix sounds like trail mix with no connection to anything. Trail mix doesn’t make me think of the Blazers.

I wasn’t saying there wasn’t a word connection. I was saying trail mix and trail blazers are not connected in any way in my mind.
All right, I will just say it. Trail mix is mamby pamby and the Trail Blazers are anything but that.

Also, I had a random idea I wanted to ask the Bedge about
Maybe this has been proposed, but what if we played Texas Hold’em with our draft picks. This year, we have a first rounder, correct? Why don’t we go to Phoenix and say, “We’ll trade you our first pick for your first round pick next year, straight across.”
Then, whichever team did BETTER would get the better draft pick, because the better team would be picking for the worse team, and vice versa. Essentially, you’re wagering with the other team that you’ll be better than them, and you’re willing to bet a few draft positions on it.
Is this plausible? How come we never see anyone doing it?

I think that would be cool
I think to up the wager, allow the league to give out extra picks to teams that switch, so you get lets say another team’s draft pick and based on how your team did another pick from somewhere (end of 1st or 2nd round). It works better in the NFL when the league already tacks on extra picks on the end of the 3rd round.

The idea of the draft is to balance things out
That’s why it doesn’t happen. I would love to see it though. It would certainly put at least one of the two games between the two on the national stage. Good idea.

So skinny though
Roy has more size to play the 3 than Rudy does, or we do a 3 combo guard lineup alongside Oden and LMA at times.
If Rudy and Bayless both fulfill their potential, there is more than enough room for them to either start alongside each other or one has a Manu role and still finishes the game alongside each other.
I went to an open mic last night and one guy who was about 6’3-6’4" got up there and did some punk rock comedy. He wore the exact same glasses you got in your picture. I kept thinking, TIMBO, is that you?!

Knicks trying to "unload" Randolph
from NY Post : “Walsh likely will make a trade before training camp begins in Saratoga Sept. 29, with unloading Zach Randolph’s contract a priority”. Also trying to get rid of Starbury : “Roberson gives the Knicks 16 guaranteed contracts, with Stephon Marbury in deep trouble. Walsh is exhausting all trade opportunities with Marbury before deciding whether to eat $22 million“
Ah yes, I remember those “unloading” days. Glad they are in our past.

The scary thing is, the Knicks could also do a turnaround pretty fast
Addition by subtraction, a little bit like us. If they manage to somehow get rid of Starbury (expiring), Zach, and maybe Jeffries or James who are all rumored to be on the shipping list you are talking about some $50 million coming off their books. It might cost them draft picks and probably one or two of the few serviceable players they have left (Lee, Crawford, Balkman, Richardson, Robinson – pretty much in that order). But it could be done by a GM not named Isiah. Then they are in position to get a top free agent in the class of 2010 or 2011. There are other guys out there other than LeBron who could really help them, and NY is always an attractive city for many young players. They already managed to solve a small part of their problem by getting Duhon, who should at least be a good backup for the future.
Next: Zach Randolph back to the Western Conference for a second round draft pick? Completely possible.

Actually, I don't think it's possible.
“Next: Zach Randolph back to the Western Conference for a second round draft pick? Completely possible.”
The Clippers were the only team with available cap space to take on that kind of a contract without giving up players to match salaries. The Knicks blew their chance to just “unload” him with the Clips and will now have to find a team dumb enough to work out a trade with.

Dallas Mavericks say no to Artest-for-Josh Howard offer
By BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News
08:06 PM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008
The Sacramento Kings have expressed interest in acquiring Mavericks forward/guard Josh Howard in a trade for All-Star forward Ron Artest, but the Mavericks aren’t interested, according to an NBA source.
The Mavericks reportedly were willing to offer forward Brandon Bass and guard Jerry Stackhouse for Artest. But the Kings wanted Howard, halting the discussions.

Kidding right?
I wouldn’t trade Bayless for Rose or Beasley – in all seriousness. Dropping 36 in a summer league game is one thing. Dropping 36 the way Bayless dropped 36 is another. It’s not the stats – it’s the attitude. It’s the explosiveness. It’s the fact that he was going by legit defenders like Strawberry and over big guys like Lopez. It’s the inevitability that he was going to score every possession down the stretch regardless of what the D threw at him. It’s the intelligence and humility in the post-game interviews.
This kid is an assassin, he brings a much needed edge to the team, and he’s an elite athlete with a skill level that’s ridiculous for a 19 year old. He’s a winner. If Roy and Oden stay healthy, he could be the difference between 1-2 championships and 4-5. And he’s going to be a blast to watch.

I hear you, but I'm not so sure. The results are meaningless
but the competition is, in some respects, a better indicator than college. Rose looked great when he played in Memphis’s system with Memphis’s players (all of whom are NBA prospects) against Memphis’s competition. But how much of that was pure athleticism? Against (wannabe) NBA guys in Orlando, he didn’t look so good. Does that mean he’s a bust? Of course not. Does it mean he’s not quite so NBA ready as many assumed based on his (overly emphasized) tourney run? Absolutely.
The opposite side of the coin is true of Bayless. He was underrated based on his teammates and situation at AZ, and the summer league showed he is more NBA ready that many people thought. Does that mean he’ll be a star? Of course not. But it’s certainly a good sign.
Maybe KP would take Rose over Bayless… but part of his magic is not always buying into conventional wisdom. What’s the basis for Rose being considered a better prospect? His pure PG skills? He was an interchangeable part in the dribble-drive motion offense. His PG skills are overrated. Bayless is more advanced in just about every skill set except maybe court vision. He’s a better fit with the Blazers, certainly, because he’s a much better shooter.

Whoa, I don't know what is
influencing your opinion here, but I suppose it’s a case of homeritis.
Rose was drafted #1. Bayless went #11. There is a reason 10 teams passed on Bayless (actually it would have been 11 if it weren’t for Portland’s maneuvering). A few summer league games have not likely changed the minds of the league GM’s, and certainly not even close to the extent where they would now be preferring Bayless over Rose!!
Rose is exceptionally fast, is powerful, explosive, sees the floor, is an excellent passer, is coachable, has a strong desire to be better, and can drive an automobile at 100 MPH plus. Unless Rose’s knee problem is more than it is said to be, there is simply no value comparison between the two.
I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

Yellowstone is a lot of fun, but it smells bad.
The red woods are big, Crater Lake is deep, and the coast has cold water.

No one has posted a summer league recap. I got nothing except that I think the Lopez brothers played better than I expected. I had no expectations for the Blazer’s players.
Hopefully nothing happens until the preseason so that we can see who survives the upcoming Blazers drought.

This poses an interesting question
What would you do if your child (or any family member for that matter) were drafted by the LAL?
I think that any person related in any way to any person employed by any organization linked to the LAL (including the LA Sparks and any of the many Starbucks owned by Magic Johnson) should be heretofore formally shunned by BEdge.
But wait! What if a family member was going to be drafted by the LAL and held out, pouted, and forced a trade to a different team? Wouldn’t that be, in essence, K*be-esque behavior?
This situation is trickier than I thought…...more to come…...

What if I play poker against Jerry Buss (avid player)...
and make him loose some of his money? Is that sort of interaction already “illegal”? If he has a bad streak, he might be willing to let a role player walk in order to save luxury tax. That would weaken the LAL. On that note, does LA play in a Summer League? We need to separate Mr. Buss from some of his money…

One Question
Why does Paul Allen want to have cap space? Is it because he’s never had it before and he wants to play with it? Or is he planning on trading like six of our guys that would make us gasp for someone that would make us gasp? I’m thinking LeBron James in a sign and trade for a lot of our sexy players just before LeBron becomes a free agent.

Roster Flexibility
It is a lot easier to make changes to the roster if you have cap space, both through trades and free agency. By having cap space in a couple years, KP will have a better idea on how this current crop of guys will do and have some avenues for addressing any potential weaknesses.

They are trying to murder you
Bump you off, steal the mascot idea, and swim in a vault filled with gold coins from the merchandise sales once Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea and Friends Fun Time TV Hour mania sweeps the nation’s youth.
If you lean over to pick up a bag or a coin off the ground, watch for a thrown knife to suddenly WHIZZ just above you, sinking deep into the wall behind where your face once was. That’s a good sign you’re a target for assassination by Paul Allen’s knife throwing Golden Robot Brigade (they killed Tupac too, because of a previous business deal PA had with Suge).
I can’t imagine better mascots than what you suggested, so the only logical conclusion is that you’ve been marked for death.

Now that you mention it
There have been a few times recently in which I’ve been walking along the sidewalk and suddenly stopped in order to tie my shoelace. Immediately afterward a heavy sandbag would drop to the ground in front of me, seemingly from nowhere. Likewise, when I roll over in bed at night, frequently seven or eight drops of acid fall from the vent directly above my bed and eat through my mattress and box spring.
I always assumed these to be the logical byproducts of my day job as a gumshoe tracking down Polly Ester Fabrique, known henchwoman of a Ms. Sandiego, first name Carmen. So there’s no way that the mishaps with whizzing knives, plummeting sandbags, and sizzling acids could have anything to do with the Blazers.
Of course, there would have to be a billionaire funding her activities…..knives, sandbags, and acid aren’t free you know…...and probable cause and all…..carry the 3….
Excuse me, I have to make a phone call.

Because they are bad.
That’s why I made fun of them. Dictionary was good, cuz of Webster (although it’s not exactly original). Prince William made be think for a while, but I was able to meander through his convoluted reasoning: Pryzbilla = Pryz-Billa, so that was actually moderately funny. LaFrentz is phonetically similar to La French, although not exactly funny. Roy Boy was dumb, Gayless was both not PC and also didn’t make any sense. the GO joke was unoriginal, Adrippp was straight up retarded. Outclassed was probably the most insulting one, but it wasn’t really that great, because you can make up all sorts of insults that start with Out. I liked Flake because it is exactly what Blake isn’t, so it was good irony. It was also ironic that he is a faker fan that prolly roots for Gasol, and yet has no idea that Fernandez is his teammate in Spain. He’s prolly just ignorant, but that’s ok. Anyway, I was really proud of myself for slamming his nicknames, so I kind of rambled here, sorry bout that.

When I said I dont understand them
I didn’t mean to imply that I do not comprehend his reasoning, or lack there of . I dont understand his intent. He clearly is ignorant and I chuckled when I read the Flake line. It is ironic for sure. Everything else didn’t really beg deep contemplation untill I read the Outclassed I got to thinking; by whom was Outlaw actually outclassed? His teammates? So basically he is saying his teammates are more classy? Hmmm… sounds pretty complimentary.
The dood is pretty lame. If he had anything filling those chonies, he would come over here and post something on our board directly.

Sorry,
I misunderstood your comment. I was scratching my head a little when considering the Prince William joke, and it took me a little while to connect the dots to Pryzbilla. That’s why I interpreted your comment as you also being confused about the meaning of his jokes. But anyway, I also am not exactly sure about his intent. He clearly is hating on the blazers, but at the same time he didn’t really put much fire into the insults, as we both see they are rather lame. I suspect that the dude has an empty noggin’.

it's funny.
Sometimes I cringe when reading comments from smug blazer “fans” at places like ESPN and Yahoo, because it seems like it was just yesterday when the Blazers were like Isaiah’s Knicks. But then I see that smugness prevalent in so many Faker fans, who constantly complain in yahoo rumors and the like that Lamar Odom sucks and this and that, and just go on complaining and complaining. Pau Gasol is soft because he didn’t bring a title to K*be’s Fakers, I mean come on. I start getting irritated once I read those, and then the itch becomes a full on boil when they start bashing Oden and other Blazers players. I then want to rub it in their faces that we have so much potential, and then I calm myself down by remembering how karma so often takes a piss in unsuspecting and often gloating individuals….so I try not to.

Blazer fans are nowhere near smug
I remember the Blogabull thread that accused Dave and the posters of being Smug. We are merely reveling in the unlimited and completley real potential of the team and deserve this more than anyone. The comments here on bedge, even when one is trying to be insulting are generally very well thought out and often times though provoking. Cant say that about any of the other blog places. LOL although that poster’s “thoughts” were definitly provoking …

I told a girl once, that she reminded me a of a Hyrda
At first she was a little offended, but the fact that I thought up a strange mythological creature that reminded me of her, made it somewhat endearing. Sort of. I think after like 5 other people caught on to it she was a little pissed off about it. Or maybe that was when I called her viking-esque. I’m not even sure anymore.

mythical
I didn’t even know about hyrdas till like last week. Aren’t those things kind of like immortal?
I ended up writing a story about that though, she kidnaps Will Smith (circa Fresh Prince) and holds him for ransom in an underwater cave. Did the Greek Hydra even live underwater?

"Kobe can be consumed
with surprising anger, which he’s displayed toward me and toward his teammates. Yet despite our recurring conflicts during our four years together, I was genuinely concerned for him, concerned about how this young man could, in the soul-consuming NBA world, become a mature adult.”
“The meeting with Kobe reinforced an idea … enlist a therapist. After receiving a few recommendations, I selected a therapist who has dealt with narcissistic behavior in the Los Angeles public school system. He’ll be right at home here.”
above quotes from chapter 1, The Last Season, by Phil Jackson, Penguin Press, 2004.
below quotes from chapter 2:
Rick Fox: “He’s the conscience of this team.”
For reporters: “I prepare the sort of pithy, unrevealing responses, that, ideally will disarm … what I am supposed to tell the press? ‘Oh, yes, guys, this is what we’ll do against Golden State today. We’ll try more isolations with Gary, move Shaq over to the wing, and show them we can’t play pick-and-roll.’ Give me a break!”
“I have my theories, one of which is that Shaquille is making the type of money-about $25m a year-that Kobe will never earn due to the changes in the league’s collective bargaining agreement … In fact, the word I got was that Kobe was the only player in the entire league who voted against the agreement because of the cap it put on salaries.”
Translating “Junk,” the Spanish word can be “Chatarra.”

Bill Simmons had a long column like this
During this year’s playoffs, linking characters and events of the Lakers with quotes from Jackson’s book. Too lazy to look for it now, sorry.
Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...
