Junk Drawer - July 21, 2008
Just thought I would start this up since there's none at the top right now... and decided to bring back the original name too. A lot of names have been thrown around, so I thought there could be a poll for fun. Since this is informal and it's really up to Dave after today, I just went with some popular ones that I remember off the top of my head. My bad if I missed some, go ahead and post away in the comments.

That is why I liked Junk Drawer
It isn’t that important but let’s throw it out there and see…
Trail mix sounds like trail mix with no connection to anything. Trail mix doesn’t make me think of the Blazers.

All right, I will just say it. Trail mix is mamby pamby and the Trail Blazers are anything but that.

Also, I had a random idea I wanted to ask the Bedge about
Maybe this has been proposed, but what if we played Texas Hold’em with our draft picks. This year, we have a first rounder, correct? Why don’t we go to Phoenix and say, “We’ll trade you our first pick for your first round pick next year, straight across.”
Then, whichever team did BETTER would get the better draft pick, because the better team would be picking for the worse team, and vice versa. Essentially, you’re wagering with the other team that you’ll be better than them, and you’re willing to bet a few draft positions on it.
Is this plausible? How come we never see anyone doing it?
Integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.
by prezofdeath on Jul 21, 2008 1:04 AM PDT 0 recs
I think that would be cool
I think to up the wager, allow the league to give out extra picks to teams that switch, so you get lets say another team’s draft pick and based on how your team did another pick from somewhere (end of 1st or 2nd round). It works better in the NFL when the league already tacks on extra picks on the end of the 3rd round.

The idea of the draft is to balance things out
That’s why it doesn’t happen. I would love to see it though. It would certainly put at least one of the two games between the two on the national stage. Good idea.

So skinny though
Roy has more size to play the 3 than Rudy does, or we do a 3 combo guard lineup alongside Oden and LMA at times.
If Rudy and Bayless both fulfill their potential, there is more than enough room for them to either start alongside each other or one has a Manu role and still finishes the game alongside each other.
I went to an open mic last night and one guy who was about 6’3-6’4" got up there and did some punk rock comedy. He wore the exact same glasses you got in your picture. I kept thinking, TIMBO, is that you?!

Knicks trying to "unload" Randolph
from NY Post : “Walsh likely will make a trade before training camp begins in Saratoga Sept. 29, with unloading Zach Randolph’s contract a priority”. Also trying to get rid of Starbury : “Roberson gives the Knicks 16 guaranteed contracts, with Stephon Marbury in deep trouble. Walsh is exhausting all trade opportunities with Marbury before deciding whether to eat $22 million“
Ah yes, I remember those “unloading” days. Glad they are in our past.

by jorga on Jul 21, 2008 7:33 AM PDT 0 recs
The scary thing is, the Knicks could also do a turnaround pretty fast
Addition by subtraction, a little bit like us. If they manage to somehow get rid of Starbury (expiring), Zach, and maybe Jeffries or James who are all rumored to be on the shipping list you are talking about some $50 million coming off their books. It might cost them draft picks and probably one or two of the few serviceable players they have left (Lee, Crawford, Balkman, Richardson, Robinson – pretty much in that order). But it could be done by a GM not named Isiah. Then they are in position to get a top free agent in the class of 2010 or 2011. There are other guys out there other than LeBron who could really help them, and NY is always an attractive city for many young players. They already managed to solve a small part of their problem by getting Duhon, who should at least be a good backup for the future.
Next: Zach Randolph back to the Western Conference for a second round draft pick? Completely possible.

Actually, I don't think it's possible.
“Next: Zach Randolph back to the Western Conference for a second round draft pick? Completely possible.”
The Clippers were the only team with available cap space to take on that kind of a contract without giving up players to match salaries. The Knicks blew their chance to just “unload” him with the Clips and will now have to find a team dumb enough to work out a trade with.

Dallas Mavericks say no to Artest-for-Josh Howard offer
By BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News
08:06 PM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008
The Sacramento Kings have expressed interest in acquiring Mavericks forward/guard Josh Howard in a trade for All-Star forward Ron Artest, but the Mavericks aren’t interested, according to an NBA source.
The Mavericks reportedly were willing to offer forward Brandon Bass and guard Jerry Stackhouse for Artest. But the Kings wanted Howard, halting the discussions.

Kidding right?
I wouldn’t trade Bayless for Rose or Beasley – in all seriousness. Dropping 36 in a summer league game is one thing. Dropping 36 the way Bayless dropped 36 is another. It’s not the stats – it’s the attitude. It’s the explosiveness. It’s the fact that he was going by legit defenders like Strawberry and over big guys like Lopez. It’s the inevitability that he was going to score every possession down the stretch regardless of what the D threw at him. It’s the intelligence and humility in the post-game interviews.
This kid is an assassin, he brings a much needed edge to the team, and he’s an elite athlete with a skill level that’s ridiculous for a 19 year old. He’s a winner. If Roy and Oden stay healthy, he could be the difference between 1-2 championships and 4-5. And he’s going to be a blast to watch.

Dude, KP would trade Bayless for Rose in a nanosecond. Beasley isn’t a good fit with our team but has way more trade value than Bayless. Summer League is meaningless.

I hear you, but I'm not so sure. The results are meaningless
but the competition is, in some respects, a better indicator than college. Rose looked great when he played in Memphis’s system with Memphis’s players (all of whom are NBA prospects) against Memphis’s competition. But how much of that was pure athleticism? Against (wannabe) NBA guys in Orlando, he didn’t look so good. Does that mean he’s a bust? Of course not. Does it mean he’s not quite so NBA ready as many assumed based on his (overly emphasized) tourney run? Absolutely.
The opposite side of the coin is true of Bayless. He was underrated based on his teammates and situation at AZ, and the summer league showed he is more NBA ready that many people thought. Does that mean he’ll be a star? Of course not. But it’s certainly a good sign.
Maybe KP would take Rose over Bayless… but part of his magic is not always buying into conventional wisdom. What’s the basis for Rose being considered a better prospect? His pure PG skills? He was an interchangeable part in the dribble-drive motion offense. His PG skills are overrated. Bayless is more advanced in just about every skill set except maybe court vision. He’s a better fit with the Blazers, certainly, because he’s a much better shooter.

Whoa, I don't know what is
influencing your opinion here, but I suppose it’s a case of homeritis.
Rose was drafted #1. Bayless went #11. There is a reason 10 teams passed on Bayless (actually it would have been 11 if it weren’t for Portland’s maneuvering). A few summer league games have not likely changed the minds of the league GM’s, and certainly not even close to the extent where they would now be preferring Bayless over Rose!!
Rose is exceptionally fast, is powerful, explosive, sees the floor, is an excellent passer, is coachable, has a strong desire to be better, and can drive an automobile at 100 MPH plus. Unless Rose’s knee problem is more than it is said to be, there is simply no value comparison between the two.
I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I
