Why are you all so worried about bayless
If you have an astute college educated gm that was and im pretty sure still a good basketball player, one who played in a top rated program, one who played on a national champion, one who learned the game from a hall of fame coach in Larry Brown,, ..one who then went to work for the spurs and learned how to build a champion from the internal and up close teachings of greg popavich,, one who has a laptop computer that has the software that his boss mr microsoft has loaded onto it.. one who does not make choices on the fly but is very studious and involves all his staff
why are we second guessing the man who took brandon roy and lamrcus aldridge over adam morrison and the head case kid in chicago...... sit back and relax.....
now lets get wnba back to portland..so i can get to see candace parker in person

I love bayless
and think he’ll be perfect for this team but I don’t think KP had him targeted as his guy from the get go. Its more likely that as he began to fall down the draft KP simply made the right moves to get him (not that that wasn’t great on his part). But if we had drafted Augustine or Westbrook or whoever, I bet everyone would have said that that was KP’s guy from the beginning. Either way though, I’m really excited for next year and in reading everything I could find about this kid, I’m sure he’ll be a great fit.
Somebody wrote me during the draft that a guy on a Knicks blog had dubbed Pritchard "The Hamburgler". In this case the appellation seems accurate. Robble-robble. - Dave

Look at Mike Barrett's blog post right BEFORE the draft
it is pretty clear that they were targeting Bayless all along

Target is a superstore!
Pritch is after the best quality player he can get.
You knew the top three were gone. Everybody had that right. So with them sewn up, and not worth trying to crack, who are you really looking at? You want the best of the rest, the ones other GMs had such difficulty sorting out. And if you can you want to pay a bargain basement price. You want to get a steal.
I am not going to call Kevin Pritchard a liar. He says his board had Bayless at 4. Okay, that is the best player you really have a shot at. KP says we got #4 for #13 and change. We took Diogu and opened room at guard doing it. Scoreboard.
KP shoots. KP scores!

I'm not worried about Bayless
I’m just not very excited about him either . . . yet. Time will tell whether he is a good player in the NBA and more importantly if he fits with the Blazers long-term plans. I’m going to reserve judgement until I’ve seen him play on this team a bit. Regarding the WNBA, here is a classic from Bill Simmons “All right, I’ll ask: How come it took three seconds to euthanize Eight Belles, but the WNBA is starting Year 12?”

This will be embarassing but I'll post it anyway . . .
I was at rehab (drug and alcohol) in Newport beach back in early ‘05 I think. I made friends with this girl (I thought she was a guy for a few days until I talked to her, seriously butch!) who used to play for the Portland Fire, I can’t remember her name now and I looked at their old roster and no name jumped out, but whatever I’m inclinded to believe her. Anyway we would play basketball a lot. I schooled her . . . every single day and I’m not proud to admit it. Have you seen those WNBA commercials where the girls just talk trash about their sport. I just sit there and nod my head and think to myself “this is the worst campaign I’ve ever seen.”

T-Rex arms is a stupid-@$$ joke...
Why not make fun of K@be instead? Seriously, don’t mock our new boy.
We need his confidence and enthusiasm in the game and lovin’ it in P-town.
I think that KP couldn’t have done us anybetter. It seems that bloggers here and Blazers fans everywhere would’ve been more stoked about Bayless if he would have come at a greater cost… Like if KP would have packaged more picks and players to move up to say, 4th overall to take Jarryd Bayless. The Top-5 pre-NBA-draft ranking of Jarryd Bayless made him a favorite among B-edge draft forecasters and many were hoping for KP to move an Outlaw or a Webster plus Jack and a combination of picks, heck maybe even Channing Frye to move up to #4.
Instead KP was able to secure that same Top-5 talent from trading up to 11th and only sacrificing a guard who had run his course in the Blazers line-up (Jarryd Jack) and our 13th pick, a measley two spots back. So, because this Top-5er is now not a Top-10 choice, which makes him succeptible to name-calling? Stupid.
Whether JB Quick pans out or not, this was truly a genius move. We got the best available player, Portland didn’t waste any value, kept our core intact and together at least one more season, kept our RLEC salary cap leverage for the future, added multiple picks and therefore leverage to next years draft and kept roster space leverage too.
It is AWESOME that we got a talent like JB Quick. This kid is definitely going to prove to be a competitor. I can see his numbers at least as good as Raymond Feltons (14.4ppg 7.5apg 1.2spg) by his second season. That is exciting and very feasible. Go JB!!!!

Jerryd Bayless "Breakdown"
I found a fairly thoughtful forum comment at www.basketballforum.com about the Blazer’s Jerryd Bayless. Any little tidbits of information help to slake my thirst for knowledge about our team’s exciting new prospects. Credit to “22ryno”, whose personal knowledge of JB seems to go back to freshman year in high school.
Most of it just confirms the relatively small amount of stuff we’ve heard thus far, but since it’s not coming from a sportswriter or pundit I guess it seemed interesting to me.

(Oh yeah…first comment from me on BE. Hard to believe I’ve been reading the site almost daily for well over a year and never commented – this place is a truly fun mix of the erudite and the ridiculous, in other words, the erudiculosity of the Bedge is off the charts, and has quite a motor. Kudos to all regular contributors. Sorry I don’t have a clue how to HTML encode the hyperlink.)

Stop with the short arms nonsense.
Jerryd Bayless will be a terrific NBA guard.
Here are his measurements:
Jerryd Bayless: without shoes— 6’ 1.75”
with shoes 6’ 3”
weight 204
wingspan 6’ 3.5”
standing reach 8’ 1”
body fat 4.7
no step jump 31.0”
running jump 38.0”
bench press 10
lane agility 11.26
3/4 court sprint 3.07
drafted #11
He does not have very long arms but they definitely are not T-Rex short. Besides he has good hops and has a great sprint time—tied at 6th best. See http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/measurements.php?year=2008&sort2=ASC&draft=0&pos=0&sort=12
A great draft pick and he will be a very good NBA player and is capable of making the All-Star team at least once in his career.

6'3" arms?!
That’s like a BABY’s arms!!
I’m jus’ playin’ o’ course. His arms are fine… EASILY the WORST thing about him, which gladdens my heart.
His pre-draft Orlando camp stats are really, really good. He is equal or BETTER than Derrick Rose at pretty much everything. Is he lanky? Nope. Do I like lanky? Of course, if someone sez they don’t they are lying. But, these aren’t Yao Ming-type short arms, these are NORMAL arms like you say.
Him being buff already doesn’t help. I don’t think his “short” arms have given him any problem, and there are a billion 6’10” wingspanned dudes who suck.
I also heard/read that he ‘never got steals’ because of his short arms, and then I looked at his stats and he had 1 a game. Obviously (or SHOULD be obvious), steals don’t mean good defense, and 1 a game is B-Roy level—otherwise, just fine. Teyshaun Prince, one of the best defenders in the NBA, gets like half a steal a game. So even if he never is a top 10 thief, who cares? Good defenders stay in front of their dude, not always gambling for the steal.
(This is not related necessarily to what you are saying, just was reminded by the short arm talk)
I don’t get bugged by the T-rex jokes at all, because it isn’t THAT mean, and for an NBA player his arms are short in relation to his height (though the DJ Augustin defenders liked his 6’3” wingspan when defending his height)—but not crazy short. I’ll take his T-Rex arms, and the rest of what he (allegedly) brangs.

DJ Augustin has a 6’3” wingspan and is 5’11.5”.
Jerryd Bayless has a 6’3” wingspan and is 6’3”.
Based on those numbers alone, who would you rather have?

Is it a trick question?
Jerryd Bayless, because he is taller and the wingspan is the same…
Plus his game is better right now, but yeah, DJ has the same length arms as Bayless, and that length was used as a ‘see he’s not too short’ argument, but Bayless is taller,, and can see through the trees better than a short PG, and just happens to have the same wingspan just about…
So, all things equal, I’ll take the taller/bigger player. I think he fits more as well, but we’ll just go by height and wingspan for this thingy.
Did I miss a trick?

to be fair, it was the entire content and premise of your post that I took issue with, not just one word. I myself attempt to be a rather “business-oriented” poster on this site, and not often taken with creating fanposts without having first thought about the potential value of the post to the readers, and whether or not the post breaks open a new line of discussion. As such, I am likely too easily and frequently put off by new fanposts that dabble more in the “fun” side of things or do not appear to me to be advancing any substantive discussion. It is at this moment where I should just move on, but rather instead my own flaws often kick in and lead me to post a comment instead.

I don't know who you are?
I think you are a rookie… but now a first round lottery pick like Bayless. You more like an after-thought 2nd rounder who doesn’t get guaranteed money and has to prove himself in the D-league. Enjoy.

Oops, sorry,
I missed your explanation post. And you’re right … I have no idea how long you’ve ‘been around’. It should have worded “he’s been posting longer”.

At the end of the day...
Sam Presti, Rod Higgins, Chris Wallace, Elgin Baylor, Larry Bird, Donnie Walsh, John Hammond, Kiki Vandeweghe, and Kevin McHale all found reasons to pass on Jared Bayless.
I think it’s possible that they had some valid concerns about the kid. Maybe his freakishly small baby arms scared them off. Maybe he demanded his own plane on road games. Maybe he wanted his name encrusted with diamonds on the back of his jersey. Maybe he sat in Sam Presti’s chair when they were doing the interview.
All I know is that they didn’t pass on such a tremendous talent for no reason.

JasonT’s FanPost – Bayless the Assasin, right?
In the thread JasonT quots JB as saying: “I’m gonna punish them for however many years I play in the league.”
JB has a Jalapeno flavored Dorito on his shoulder and he intends to get even – I just love a player that is that motivated.
I have this vision of Jerryd with a spike collar around his neck and a snarl on his face. Attack!

I think he'll do fine, and quite possibly better
He’ll have Roy to handle the ball and set things up much of the time, and when he’s with the starters and if he draws defenders someone’s gonna pay dearly. Leave Oden or LMA to pick up the dude driving the lane? DUNK! I see many assists and many abused rims in everyone’s future. And if he’s got the motor and the strength to annoy the daylights out of the opposing PG, so much the better (and he’ll be learning from Nate, one of the best). And I agree, a great wingspan is no indicator of success, otherwise Don Chaney would have dominated the 70s.

Get Off It.
If arms were the sole criteria, then I’d be in the NBA right now. And, players like Mitch Richmond, JoJo White, etc. would never have made it. Eric Gordon would also have not been drafted – let alone Augustin. Even Mayo would be suspect.
Nothing amuses me more than people who call KP a liar. KP said all of his scouts ranked Bayless #4 in the draft. KP said they had him targeted from the beginning – which is why they “didn’t” try him out or talk about him. The strategy was always misdirection. It was never an accident. KP did not need a classic PG, and Bayless was the perfect fit from the available players for Roy. KP has repeatedly stated this – but some of you obviously don’t believe him. And then, we have those who have decided that KP doesn’t know talent. Which is why players like Roy, Aldridge, Fernandez etc. were “obviously” mistakes. So Bayless is a mistake too.
Oh well. Obviously, some of you are smarter than KP. So, Bayless isn’t really the talent KP says he is.
I’ll take KP’s judgement.

Re the T-Rex arms thing
I just want to explain. I do not actually think his arms are an issue. I think that fact some have glommed onto it as a real issue is hillarious. The whole T-Rex joke, for me anyway, is a satire. I am just messing around with it. I am in favor of the pick and the trade. I feel it was a brilliant bit of misdirection and KP is a great GM. Now that we have that taken care of…..

That is really funny.
You hate it when people call KP a liar and then go on to basically call him the master of deception? Either way KP lied (Not that I care), he either tricked everyone before the draft or he is tricking everyone now.
The thing is, Kevin Pritchart is just too tricky for his own good. If he tells me Bayless was always #4 on his draft board, how do I know he’s telling the truth? Maybe he’s doing that just to boost his trade value? Maybe the con is still going. How do I know? After all, if KP is smart enough to trick half the GM’s in the league, then he is certainly smart enough to trick fans into thinking the pick was perfectly engineered.
You remind me of a girl who is dating a married man, but doesn’t believe that he would ever cheat on HER. If KP would lie to other GM’s (some of which are his friends) why would he have qualms about lying to you?

Brandon is a liar, too
Sometimes he fakes right and goes left.
Oden isn’t a liar. You know he wants to dunk on you, and will.
To call the misdirection described in this post “lying” is kind of missing the point. People expect you to not tip your hand, they expect you to try to keep them from finding out what you are going to do. That isn’t a lie, it is expected.

I understand that.
It’s part of the sport and if he didn’t do it he would be a pretty bad GM. I don’t have a problem with him saying stuff to the media to get results even if it isn’t true. The point is… he says stuff to the media to get results even if it isn’t true. So when Pritchard says that Bayless was the #4 guy on his draft board I have to take it with a grain of salt.
1. He could be saying it to increase Bayless’ trade value.
2. He could also be saying it to make Bayless feel better about being with the Blazers. ” Those other guys were wrong about you , but I knew how great you were all along.”
That’s his job, I’m not criticizing Pritchard for misdirecting people or whatever you want to call it. I just think it’s silly to treat his every word as gospel. Did he really target Bayless all along? Who knows, it could just be more smoke and mirrors.

Fair enough
you could be right. But most people had Bayless very, very high, like #3-5. It was just a weird conjunction of team needs, etc., that caused him to drop.

Bayless, Good!
I look at the Blazers roster and am not worried about potential at all. I’m worried about to much potential. Just for the fact that you need role players. Looking at the last champions for the last several years they all have 2 to 3 stars and 5 to 6 role players. I’m very concerened with the talent overall being too good. I can see players like Bayless or Rudy being potential stars and not staying here. I really thought that during the draft that Bayless was more excited about going to Indiana because it lacks stars and he could shine. In Portland, they have their 3 guys and possibly more. I just hope that if the Blazers lose some of these guys they get = value back so that they are always reloading. I honestly feel that Bayless is more talented then Rondo coming out of college and he was a role player, look what he provided in the series this year (maybe it was the legth of his arms, it diffinitely wasn’t his shooting).
