Spoiled...Rotten?

Are we, as fans of this team, becoming not just spoiled but rotten? Are we starting to disrespect other teams and rip apart our own players? When I come to a site like Blazer's Edge I expect a more civilized discourse then one I might find at O-live. Indeed, I do find exactly that. This post however is about a trend in the greater Blazer community.

I know a lot of the behavior I'm about to describe has been there for years; it seems recently it has reached epidemic proportions. I find that whenever I go to read a story by Quick or Holodahl and I peruse the comments there are always those who are ready to leap on the smallest flaws of even our least consequential players. For example, Batum, whom I believe is now signed, is regularly skewered for his raw and hesitant play. I for one think Batum is a role-player project that KP wants to mold into a Tayshaun Prince-style lock down perimeter defender. Bayless is scorned for his supposed selfishness and average wingspan.

Those who don't rip on our project role players and rookie combo/PG turn their disrespect onto other teams with gloating declaration of a Pritch-slap and how stupid the management of other teams is. I myself am guilty of dropping a P-bomb now and then and even reveling in our glorious drafts. Nonetheless a point comes when it gets absurd.

Then there are those people in Blazer land that are so freaking greedy they are losing it with pipe dreams of CP3 and D. Will manning the point. (Thank god that's been put to rest.) Meanwhile, a 27.7 average with 5+ boards a game causes a player to be labeled selfish regardless of the level of talent he has to pass to.

I guess I just wanted to publicly proclaim the following:

We, as Blazer fans, are perhaps the luckiest fans in the league. Nowhere else will you find such a youthful, talent-laden group of gentlemen. Many mistake Bayless focus and media non-savvy to be signs of a "bad seed" or "team killer" attitude. Nothing could be further from the truth. The fact is this group of guys is nothing short of breath taking and I just praise god that with Summer League and then Olympic hoops and early training camp I just hope I make it to October without going into a diabetic coma over this sweet, sweet lineup.

I for one will only criticize Batum

because I love him so much and what him to succeed. LOL

In all seriousness, this is a great post. Not too scathing and “parental lecture”-ish and pretty funny. Our team has become talk of the league. It’s one thing for the marketing team of an organization talk up “potential” and “re building’ etc etc such as the Timberwolves and/or the Heat. But when the NAtional Media, every commentator, every coach and gm is specifically calling out the PTB as the team to beat and having an unfair amount of talent and prospects it’s hard not to get super duper stoked and excited.

P-town is feeling itself right now. We are the talk of the league and for all the right reasons. The main point i COMPLETELY disagree with you is your use of the word
“gentlemen”.

1. To me, that word represents the feminine dandies that have 8 mistresses and play poker all night while living off their family inheritance.
2. Literally, I dont want any of our guys to be gentle in any way shape or form.

They are good citizens, real guys that are hard working, nice, have good personalities, and give a crap about their team and teammates- but not GENTLE

:-)

To me, “gentlemen” just means men who know how to behave themselves appropriately and respectfully. Good citizens.

And if they are family men, I hope they are gentle in the way they treat their wives and children, too.

Amen

I wouldn’t call Bayless media non-savvy, though.
He understands the media and is capable of a
good interview. He just doesn’t like to play that
game. Tonight the man was on FIRE. He didn’t
miss in the second half. WOW. MVP of the
Summer League in a walk.

HAHA i smiled when i watched him in the after game interview

he was saying all the right things and came off very genuine. The early ‘hubris’ and ‘conceit’ we all perceived from him, I am now convinced was his nerves and immaturity. He clearly is a very nice boy and his giggling reminds me a lil’ of Travis when he interviews . :-)
He did great and made super plays. Im proud to have him on board

yeah...

I like how he tried to do some live, on camera, trash talking, something like “they were trying to go behind the screens to make me a jump shooter and keep me out of the paint, and you see how that worked out.” a great trash talk considering how he lit them up, but he couldn’t quite get it out with a straight face. Maybe he realized it was going to come off pretty cocky (I bet his been coached to try to be humble in interviews because of the perception that he might be cocky, on the verge of arrogant) so he tried to abort. Whatever the case may be, I think that he come off in that interview as pretty endearing. Seems like a good kid. Welcome to The Team Jerryd! :)

by MattyDread on Jul 20, 2008 1:22 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree totally.

But Bayless was only 3-11 in the first half and now that he has gotten hot we should trade him while his stock is at the highest for Donte Greene. I mean the guy went for 40, four more points than Jerryd has scored in SL. He obvoisly just got lucky on his jumpshots as his form is terrible and will get domanated in the regular season, I mean 11-15 in the 2nd half? NOBODY can keep that up, that is 73%. Clearly he just got lucky and was on. TRADE HIM NOW!

Yeah I hear what you are saying people are wanting to find reasons why he dropped and it was simply because this draft was so spread out and GMs that did not fo their homework lost out. Also the only teams that would benefit from him are teams with dynamic playmaking SGs, so that would be Mia or Minny. The rest of the teams needed a “pure” PG and went that way. That is good for us as he now has a chip on his shoulder and motivation against 10 other teams who he will want to kill.

What is it about scoring Gs from Arizona that wear the #0 and have personal vendettas against teams? Is it the heat there? IDK

BTW Augustin is averaging the same amount of assists as Bayless interestingly enough.

I posted about this very same thing

a while ago, but it was mostly rebuking Blazer fans from other websites that remind you of a YouTube discourse. It makes me nervous when it even creeps into the Bedge. We have a lot of new people here, but let’s be good about karma. Or this team actually might end up moving to Seattle, losing Oden’s career due to injury, finding out one of our star players is a necrophiliac, and trading Brandon Roy for Michael Redd. Let’s all keep our perspective and enjoy how great it is to be a Blazer fan!

But...

isn’t Michael Redd the cagey veteran we need to make our title run??? If Brandon Roy is a necro, than this deal becomes imperative.

Cagey veteran…..title run…... this is a deal we need to get done!!! We might even be able to pick up Gadzuric to shore up our 5 situation, as shaky as that is. Dodge a bullet is what this does.

This post is almost feels like I wrote it, I agree on all points

I feel people over critique players way too much now. It’s like how about just backing off and enjoying the team now. It’s to the point where it’s all under control and KP knows where we are headed. No need to talk about how selfish Bayless is after a few games with no talent around him. I guess there are no interesting things to talk about any more.

I like the positive outlook posts on here, few as I’ve seen. It gets annoying reading how the Blazers aren’t perfect enough and how many ways we can attain immortality. I just want to see great basketball.

the vocal and emotional minority

tend to out shout the more reasonable majority.

I once did a post to get a feel for what people’s thoughts were on firing Nate. There was LOUD and VOCAL support to do so. What I discovered was that very few, percentage wise, were actually interested in doing so. Some were frustrated but that didn’t equate to firing, it was just a vocal minority.

I now tend to shrug off the comments you mentioned as emotional and in the minority and filled with passion. The reality is that most bloggers on here are fairly knowledgeable about the blazers and have decently realistic expectations. Sometimes it’s even just a passionate at night rant and the senses return in the morning. Some take losing better than others.

I admit that it sometimes causes me a little distress but I keep repeating to myself that most blazer fans have a little more common sense.

Additionally, as for the gloating… I think that isn’t intentional but a celebration that “hey, things around here no longer SUCK!!!” We’ve had it pretty bad for a while now and we can see that light at the end of the tunnel getting closer. Is it any wonder that some people dash down it as fast as they can? This of course can lead to disappointment and so you have this high and low cycle.

I suspect some fans will be upset when we don’t win 82 games. It’s just how those silly fanatics are.

I resent that

I’ll be upset if we don’t win 82 games. Since it will take 16 playoff wins to win it all, if we win less than 82 that means we’re winning less than 66 in the regular season. Unacceptable.

If Channing says we’re going to go 98-0, who are you to set sights lower? Channing’s the man.

Won't Stern have a temper fit

over the money? I think he would make them play.

The real problem will be in the ECF, because both teams will be trying to lose, rather than have to face us in the Finals.

This will be rectified by our D League team playing in, and winning, the Eastern Conference.

No.

No. No. No. We are not spoiled rotten. Not even close. I only joined in May, but I have been reading this blog for quite a while. I can remember a couple instances of people seriously wanting Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Meanwhile I can remember somewhere around 75 fanposts titled “Just in case you were wondering” or something similar when they were re-signed. Everybody went on those fanposts and commented that hopefully now this would deafen the (relatively non-existent) roar of everybody else foaming at the mouth trying to figure out how to get one of these two players in Portland. Very, very few people are calling Jerryd Bayless a bad seed. Anytime somebody does say something disparaging about a player on the team, they are besieged by comments fiercely defending the player. For every “dumb” trade idea there are 100 people to bash it. Comments praising players and condemning negativity get 12 recommendations and turn green on a frequent basis. Posts like this get in the top 5 consistently. Everybody seems to agree and everybody already seems to “get it”, which would appear to prove that this is (for the most part) a non-issue. Hardly anybody wants to completely break this team up and fire Coach McMillan. This is already a classy blog in my opinion, with informative and entertaining posters. It’s not perfect, but perfection is unattainable so I think we can relax just a little bit with the scolding. There are far more people complaining than people offending. There is a vibe getting increasingly noticable around here, one that’s fairly pretentious. Please. I’m begging. Less Fun Police. Things pretty much regulate themselves. Remember that this is Portland. There’s bound to be crazies popping up every now and again. It’s charming.

Personal Point of Irriation

I feel like this is a group meeting where we all vent.

So here I go: Am I the only person that thinks its ridiculous we’re that we’re calling Bayless T-Rex? His wingspan is larger than his height. Sure, it’s not freakish like Westbrook, but I feel like to earn a T-Rex moniker you need to have an armspan shorter than your overall height…

Phew… I do feel better…

Why is everyone looking at me like I’m crazy?

Negative Knit-Picky Nay-sayers...

All these guys we draft or acquire are not supposed to be All-Stars. We need to have a bunch or guys who STAR in their ROLES on the roster. These players need to be able to step up and fill a niche need that KP and Nate carve out specifically for them.

Too raw, too small, not long enough, not experienced enough, unproven, over-hyped, retrospectively acquired at too high of a price or shoulda-woulda-coulda got someone else (like Arthur over Batum or CP3 over Webster), never gonna live up to his potential, or we need an all-star there (SF or PG). It is ridiculous. Most good teams have two or three or four really top notch NBA star players, then they a bunch of guys to fill in the minutes and skill gaps to run 5 on 5 for 4-quarters.

I love the prospect of Bayless so far. IMO, we do not need an all-world top-line distributor to start at our PG. Heck, pre-draft bloggers were saying they didn’t want DJ Augustin (a true PG-Distributor) because of his size… although he is big enough to play in the NBA, now we are ripping Bayless because he is a scoring machine with an average wing-span. Those size calibrations don’t mean squat.

What Portland needs out of Bayless is someone who can run along side B.Roy, create offense, score if the ball is kicked back to him, get the ball moving if he is starting a play, run a fast break, and play defense against opposing PG’s… nowhere does it say we need a 6’8” wingspan and a guy who passes like Magic Johnson. Bayless can get it done with his explosive athleticism and drive to succeed. I think those two qualaties can not be over looked, and Bayless excels in both.

Realistically manage your expectations people, this isn’t a video game where all your players are 99 skills across the board. These guys are all pieces of a puzzle. And there is guts, work-ethic, confidence, team-chemistry, consistent effort and positive attiude that go into this mixture. Which all matter more than having an above average wing-span. Talent? All these guys have it. Size wise, the Blazers look to be able to create mis-matches across the board, so everyone doesn’t need uncanny size and consistent all-star level play. That is too ridiculous to desire.

We have very little to be spoiled about...

This team has yet to actually accomplish anything more than winning 41 games. It’s very easy to get caught up in the hype and believe that a dynasty and multiple titles are on the way but any fan who was around in the Spring of 1978 can tell us it simply is not that easy. Championships take not only a lot of good players but also a storm of circumstances – read David Halberstam’s Breaks of the Game if you doubt that. Granted, KP seems to have put the talented guys on the team who will create those circumstances, but we still must not throw caution to the wind until all the new guys start to pan out.

In short, I, for one, look forward to the day when I have to start watching that I’m not a spoiled fan instead of watching that I’m not becoming overly optimistic.
