Gameday Open Thread (Suns)
It's the final weekend of Summer League and I've landed in Vegas just in time to watch the youngsters face off today against the Suns and tomorrow against the Hornets. My timing is impeccable, as Joe Freeman reports that Petko may get some extended rest today. Wonderful! At least this will keep the ball in Bayless's hands, I guess.
Phoenix Stan over at Bright Side of the Sun is also chronicling Summer League here in LV so be sure to check out his coverage throughout the day.
Gametime is 7PM tonight. The names to know on the Suns roster are DJ Strawberry, Alando Tucker and Robin Lopez; they are led into battle by longtime Blazers nemesis Thunder Dan Majerle.
The developing question for the Blazers tonight will be: How well will Bayless handle the point guard role? Or, put another away, how long will JB pretend to play the point before he decides to take the game over because he is surrounded by incompetents (too harsh, my bad) the most talented player on the floor?

Have the Blazer coaches seen enough of Koponen?
OK, I’ll run this by you, Ben, since Dave is not responding.
Do you get the impression that the Blazer’s brass has “seen enough” of PetKo at the PG and have already made their decision to sign or not sign him?
Is PK nursing an injury?
If not, why rest him now when SL is THE time to develop youngsters?
If you are at Vegas, see if you can track down KP and ask him these questions.
I don't have as much computer access here as at home
I would guess that the Blazer brass have indeed seen what they need to see from Koponen. Keep in mind he also came in early to work out for them. They have not seen Bayless at point at all. Petteri has years to develop and these two games won’t help him as much as seeing Bayless play point will help the Blazers (and Bayless himself).
—Dave
Oh, and Ben
You do know that those “incompetents” are probably going to walk right by your table on the way to the locker room, right?

Think this through
Remember what Sen. Ted Stevens said about the Internets:
”... It’s a series of tubes. And if you don’t understand, those tubes can be filled and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line …”
So, really, it doesn’t matter that those guys are in Vegas as long as there is a tube that extends that far and if they can fill the tube with their message.
Nice try though.

I don't have a scoop
because nobody is saying at this point. But if you want my best guess I’d say that all three of the main guys here will be on our roster.
—Dave
I not only lack a scoop; I don't have a teaspoon
but the tea leaves (the teaspoon would help stir them) seem to be saying:
o Koponen’s going to get a Trailblazer contract for 2008-09.
o No way the Trailblazers are going deep into the season with four point guards taking up 26.7% of the roster spots.
So that raises the obvious question: among the four, who gets traded (because nobody can get cut)?
Blake is the only safe starter, with by far the highest floor, but also the lowest ceiling.
Rodriguez was foolish to stay home in Spain, but the Trailblazers think enough of him that they sent over an assistant coach to live there for the summer with no assignment other than to get Sergio up to speed.
Koponen could well spend a good portion of the season in the Development League, but he still takes a roster spot there, and does not have a trade value as high as his potential.
RydBay is the most unknown quantity—in terms of whether he can play the 1 (there are no minutes to share at 2, so he’d da-n well better play 1). Makes sense to get a look at him against competition who may not be good, but are seriously hungry.

Bayless
Does he really count as a PG? He reminds me quite a bit of Leandro Barbosa – a dude who doesn’t seem to have a real position, but who gets to the hole in a hurry and who can light it up. Now we don’t really know much about Bayless’ defense, but he has quick feet so I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. We can use him in the second and fourth quarters to provide some instant offense and maybe lock down the other team’s PG in crunch time.
With Roy on the team, we don’t really need a traditional PG, just someone who can dribble well enough to bring the ball up the court.
I’d say that Rodriguez is the odd man out.
With all due respect ...
If KP trades Bayless away in favor of keeping Sergio then I’ll know this team is jinxed and all of the good vibes that have been accumulating over the past couple of years were all just a cruel cruel joke.
I think Serg will need a new home by the trading deadline, and who knows maybe a change of scenery will do him some good, because I don’t see him sniffing the regular rotation thsi coming year.
Unacceptable
Since you run the site, you are expected to be on standby 24/7 to answer any and all questions we might have.
Koponen has been running the point in Europe so he is more of a known quantity. Bayless hasn’t done much passing since he has been too busy driving to the basket. I’m not sure to whom he is expected to pass the ball though.
A+ for grammar....
by not finishing your sentence with a preposition. Although I would have gone with, “Though I am not sure to whom he is expected to pass the ball.”
Just havin’ fun. It isn’t often people make the effort to do what you did. Thank you.

Not so fast.
So far Bayless has had very little time at PG. And when he has been, he does not have many options to pass to who can convert the pass into a basket. He was told early on to play the SG and has done so terrifically. Let’s wait till we see him in fall camp, preseason and 3 months of the season. I’ll bet he becomes a very decent PG. He did average 4 assists last season even though he played out of position as SG.
I'm sticking by it. He is not a 1.

The only reason to have good players
Is to trade them for something else, preferrably draft picks.
We need young talent tyo build around, Timbo! We’re like the 29th oldest team now, it’s gross.
Quiet please, KP might hear you.
I seriously hope KP can stop trying to be so smart by making phenomenol trades.
He needs to let these guys play this out. Players have a way of sorting it all out with practices, preseason and this season. Then there probably will be the playoffs and all of next season. Lots of time to let this future championship team to put itself together.
I was very encouraged to hear Nate talk about easy transition (i.e. fast break) baskets. He has seemed in the past not to even like fast breaks. What did we rank? About 29th in fast break points?
This is the unit until the trade deadline, I think...
............................... they’ll get Petko signed. If he progresses even a little, they’ll move Sergio in a deal with Raef at the deadline and maybe get a big-money vet for the stretch run.
That seems like a logical scenario, anyway…

wow
talk about taking over a game. No one else on our team had more than 6 points. We had 44 second half points – how many were his? 26? 28? How many of our 4th quarter points did he have, and down the stretch? Everyone on Phoenix knew he was the only option we had going, yet he still couldn’t be stopped.

Bayless needs to start
Unreal player.
Oden+Roy+Aldridge+Rudy=Dynasty. Believe
Summarizing my thoughts
I think we can take a lot more away from this game than the previous ones. The last couple games have been free throw practice for Bayless and he has proven he can make them. This game he had to work for his shot, coming off screens, pull up jumpers, and floaters in the lane. There was a lot more diversity in his scoring and showed that he can do more than drive into the lane and draw contact.
Steven Hill played very well within himself and was great on the defensive side.
Koponen showed some glimpses of sergio tonight: the good with his drives and crosscourt passes to set up shooters, and also the bad in playing faster than the rest of his teammates and turnover the ball.
you know when Outlaw gets the ball at the top of the key, you know he is going to shoot it; its kinda the same with Batum on the wing, he is going to drive into the middle and try the finger roll. He needs to learn a crossover so he can pull up halfway through his drive, or get better hops so he can throw it down over taller guards.

Does Bayless have to start?
One way or another, Bayless deserves more minutes than Blake. I don’t see why we can’t start games with Roy at the point, and then just switch it up when Blake comes in from the bench. You want to win, and with Bayless on the court, regardless of position, he gives you a better chance than when Blake is in there.
Well, maybe
Eventually I agree, but we need to see Bayless against NBA players and NBA big men.
I think he’ll do great, but Blake’s solidness on a very young team helps a LOT. If Bayless can get a team into their offense, help Roy as a playmaker so Roy doesn’t do it all, and hit outside shots and play defense, he could start and play over Blake.
But, that’s a lot to expect from a young rook. He looks great of course, but it’s still too early.

Abbott from TRUE HOOP
Slow Day For MVP Candidates
First Love gets hurt, now Portland’s Jerryd Bayless just had a quarter where he didn’t attempt a free throw. Maybe Bayless is a little tired, but he doesn’t appear to be playing with his usual fire. He missed both of his shots during his five first-quarter minutes.
Actually, the entire Portland team appears to be sleep. The Suns raced out to a 17-4 lead and haven’t looked back, leading by 10 after one.
It’s now late in the second quarter and although he is shooting more jumpers instead of driving to the hoop, Bayless is scoring. He’s hit a couple of jumpers and has seven points. As I’m typing, he just shot an airball that was so short, I don’t know if he’ll be credited with a missed shot or a turnover for a bad pass.
Like all good players, Bayless apparently can turn it on and off at will. Right now he has it on. He erupted for 10 points in the third quarter - mainly on jumpers - and has four more points early in the fourth for a total of 23. The leading scorer in summer league is 9-for-18 from the field and Portland has a three-point lead.
There is no need to have a vote for MVP tomorrow because Bayless clinched it with his performance tonight. He went crazy in the fourth quarter scoring 17 of his team’s 22 points. He drained short jumpers, long jumpers, runners and layups. He hit the game-winner with under 10 seconds left—a floater in the lane.
His stat line reads like this: 36 points on 14-for-26 from the floor, 6-for-6 from the line, three boards, three steals and an assist.

1 turnover in summer league
Is like having 0.000 turnovers for a 82 game NBA season. Everyone has like 5 turnovers minimum if they play over 20 minutes in the summer league. Sloppy bastards!
