Bayless will have a better rookie year than Rudy

That's right. This site is full of Rudy fans and Bayless gets a really hard time.

*They will most likely compete for minutes, and both be in the 20-25 minute range as a season average.

*Both are fearless slashers that shot well in their previous seasons. Bayless 45.8 FG, 40.7 3pt, 7.4 FTA; Fernandez 49.2 FG, 41.1 3pt, 5.8 FTA.

*Defensively Bayless probably has better lateral quickness. I'm basing this on his incredible athleticism. They might guard different positions, but I'd put Bayless on the other team's best guard over Fernandez.

*Their assist averages are virtually the same, Fernandez had three more than Bayless over a 30 game season. 123-120 while they both played the 2 guard.

*Experience is the key difference. Rudy has been a pro since 16, and he is 23 years old. Jerryd has been in the AAU and High School basketball system for the four years previous to his one year at Arizona. Although Rudy has a longer history, I believe the AAU system is a tough road. Also UA plays in the PAC-10, which is the toughest conference in the country. 12 draftees, 7 in the first round, or 20% of the draftees were from the PAC-10.

*We don't know Rudy yet. Granted, we don't know Jerryd, either. We know which one has a killer instinct. We know which one complained about his friend's playing time.

*I'm excited about them both I just think Bayless will have the better rookie year. He will only work hard and do what the coaches ask of him, which translates to more minutes. He also seems tougher, which Sarge likes.

Anyway, I'll throw in a poll...

Jerryd = Rudy?

If MJ = 5

then Jerryd could be a 7 and Rudy could be a 6

and the relation would still hold true

Rudy > MJ
Jerryd > MJ

and then you’d have
Jerryd > Rudy

Personally though, I tend to use TiH statistical analysis when looking at a player, which makes me think the following

Team means they play on the same side

It’s not about one vs the other but how they play together. Watch out though because Petteri just might be playing more than people think.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

You Don't Understand

It’s OK to hate fair weather fans of teams, just not fair weather fans of players. It’s not about the team, it’s about our favorite player on the team, and who’s in his way to becoming a superstar. If you don’t hate at least one person on your own team, then you’re not a true fan.

I normally pick a player to hate after the 10th game. Summer league is too early to decide on who to hate. I need the media and others at Blazer’s Edge to influence my decision before I decide.

I'm not sure I've ever

witnessed so many hyping a player so much over two pretty much meaningless Summer League games.

Both players will have to adjust but I look for Rudy to contribute much more due to his experience playing against professionals in a tough league.

If Jerryd averages 20 – 25 minutes a game this year, I won’t ban myself from BEdge but I will put up a crow-eating post. I’m thinking it will take a serious injury or two for Bayless to average that many minutes.

I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

I think it's a toss up,

I too have noticed a little attitude towards Bayless. Portland is flat out spoiled, that’s why. I couldn’t bring myself to vote. I will say he (Bayless) reminds me of a less fluid and developed young Allen Iverson. Rudy’s Euro game may not translate as well immediately so I will give Mr. Aggro the early benefit, but I officially warned you guys not to hate on one or the other – Either of them could blow up any given night.

by MGNNoah on Jul 19, 2008 8:15 AM PDT reply actions

I think it's Bayless

It’s hard to tell who is more skilled- Bayless has looked excellent in his 3 summer league games. Rudy looks great on clips.

But Bayless has an easier path to playing time- he only has to beat out Blake and he’s the starting point guard.

By contrast, Rudy has Roy in front of him at the 2 spot- it’s much harder to beat out an all-star for time.

by chulavista on Jul 19, 2008 8:34 AM PDT reply actions

intresting

im having a really hard time deciding on this one..im thinking that nate has been given orders to play rudy or he wouldnt have came over.. but on the other hand bayless is such an competitor that he may become a cancer without floor time so they have to stick a pacifier (20 mins a game) in his mouth…they will be on the same unit so it will be intresting

if it can be conceived it can be achieved

Jerryd

because I have seen exactly three games where he has been the most dominant player on the court, and even though it is summer league, the guy has the kind of instincts that are going to serve him well in the NBA.
I have never seen Rudy play, save a few youtube clips where it looks like he is playing against high school level talent. I am not a Rudy hater, but nothing I have seen or heard has shown me that he can play at the NBA level. The game over in Europe is styled for guys like Rudy, and it is completely different in the NBA. He may go up for a dunk and find his frail 170 pound frame smacked into the third row.

Uh...

I agree there will be a transition period for Rudy, maybe a couple of months or a year or two, but “high school talent” kind of ignores what has been happening in the world over the past 20 years in international basketball. He will need to bulk up but there is no reason to think he couldn’t have a big impact by the end of this season.

Yahoo Sports.

Drop into Yahoo.com’s sports. Bayless/KP are the feature article. By the way, Bayless is smiling. That really worries me.

Hows this for a quote?

The latest piece of the puzzle seems to be guard Jerryd Bayless, who was drafted No. 11 by Indiana and traded to Portland. Bayless has been terrorizing opponents in the NBA Summer League at Cox Pavilion, averaging 27.7 points a game.

"I’m not surprised," Bayless said after scoring 29 points Thursday in the Blazers’ 88-78 loss to Minnesota. "I know what I can do. I came here to show people I can play."

Talk about being drafted too low motivating someone. I’d suggest everyone start thinking about ways to keep Bayless p-——d off. All season.

Bayless will have a better year, and here's why...

.............................. Rudy is a straight 2. Bayless might like to score the ball more than most, but he’s small and quick, not a 6’5” dude. He will wind up paired with Roy, Blake will pair up with Rudy on the white unit by mid-season.

Rudy will thus do his gunning from the bench and out of the glaring spotlight; Bayless will wind up a “starter” and will garner more attention.

His presence on the court at the same time as God, LMA, and Roy will preclude double-teams. There will be driving lanes aplenty for him…

There ya go, by the end of the year it will be Rex for Mayor, whereas Rudy will do fine, but will put up his numbers out of the spotlight…

Of course, if they wind up playing Rudy at the 3 on the starting team, all bets are off…

What about Bayless' 3pt shooting?

Will it be hard for him to unseat Blake if he can’t hit the three consistently? I haven’t seen him shoot many yet. That would be the one thing that might keep him on the white unit with Rudy. The Black unit has Roy penetrating and dishing to Blake and Webster while the White unit has Bayless penetrating and dishing to Rudy and Outlaw.

Yup - This season is about Oden and who can play with him.

I don’t think the Blazer’s offense will be this way all the time, but there will be a lot of dumping the ball in to LA or Oden and waiting for them to make a shot or kick it out to the open guy for a jumper. I think Blake will be on the floor a lot of the time Oden is on the floor. Just by having two big guys in the paint, who can score, means there will be a lot of opportunities for guys on the perimeter to make jump shots. That means Blake, Roy, and Webster. If memory serves me, all three guys were asked to work on their outside shot in the off season. So far, outside shooting has not been part of Jarryd’s game. I’m not saying he doesn’t have it, I’m just saying there are guys in front of him who for sure have it.

by tominhawaii on Jul 19, 2008 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

3 point shooting

I think the reason we haven’t seen many 3s by Jerryd is that he’s been the constant focus of the other team’s defense. His history has shown that he shoots well, and I think he’ll get more chances when there are actually other people on his team who need to be defended. I haven’t seen anything to indicate that he can’t make open shots. He’s just not likely to get many in this setting.

Rudy

Was better than Bayless last year in every statistical category, despite playing against tougher competition in a league that undercounts assists and has a more distant 3pt line. Rudy dominated in a very strong league whose teams are able to occasionally beat NBA teams. He is also one of the best players on the World Champion Spanish national team. Judging by his time on the Lane Agility Test, Rudy has the best lateral quickness out of all of this year’s rookies. He has clear advantages over Bayless in hight/length, BBIQ, court vision, and shooting. He also makes his teammates better, something that Bayless has not yet shown he can do.

All the evidence points to Rudy being better than Bayless next year.

I must see Rudy compete before I make my judgement.

This is the NBA, at least with Bayless you can get a clearer picture. Dominating in Europe still gives that picture a blur.

by BRoyInThe4th on Jul 20, 2008 3:09 AM PDT reply actions

It'll be a Monster

If Rudy is better than Bayless, then the Blazers guard rotation is going to be a monster. If Rudy is simply good, it’ll still be a monster. Every summer league game so far I kept waiting for Bayless to have an off night. After all, everybody has off nights. At least most do. But after putting the team on his back and dropping 36 pts ofnPhoenix last night, I somehow think that Bayless is the real deal. KP said give the kid 40 games and he’d have it all figured out. If that’s all he needs, and at this point I’m the last guy to question KP, then when you factor in KP’s enthusiasm over Rudy, you have to believe we’re not going to be looking for guards.

by Eben Calder on Jul 20, 2008 6:57 AM PDT reply actions

There's going to be a war at training camp

Between Bayless and Rudy for those 20-25 backup guard minutes. I give the edge to Jerryd because he has that low center of gravity to guard opposing PGs. We’ll have to wait and see how Rudy’s “lateral quickness” stats translate when attempting to guard real live NBA waterbugs.

My suspicion? Nate won’t be matching Rudy up with those quick PGs. But when the others teams play a taller PG with below-average “shake” (like Steve Blake) then Rudy could get some run with Roy.
