Its questionable

Once he brought me a empty yogurt container from the trash all the way upstairs, then looked me straight in the eye as if to say “Cmon… that was impressive, now pet me!”.

however, he has a tendency to get excited, and during these times he runs head first into his water bowl, then he goes crazy cause he is wet, and knocks over his food bowl, then mysteriously vanishes. Where does he go? THE BATHTUB!

Trust me when I say that this cat loves a dry bathtub.

This from Pro Sports Daily:

The Mavericks held a private workout earlier in the week for six-year veteran Darius Miles, who had microfracture surgery on his right knee in 2006 and has not played since.

“He was pretty good,” Nelson said. “His conditioning and basketball timing isn’t quite there. But he worked out pretty well, and we’re just doing our due diligence. He’s a guy you have to do your homework on.”

Despite the workout, however, it’s unlikely the Mavericks will sign Miles, who still is due $18 million on a contract he signed with the Blazers.

I remember telling him how impressed I was with a player during summer league. In Avery's unique voice, he replied, "Marc, it's summer league." I

What does Koponen not playing as much tonight mean?

Have the Blazers seen what they wanted to see and now they plan on signing him? Or do they just want to see more of Bayless at the PG?

He has looked pretty good to me so far. I am of the opinion that Sergio has a lot to prove this coming year and it would be good to have Pete there to push him. I would rather see him get run with the Blazers in practice and spend some time in Idaho than go back to Europe.

PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04

by tssbro on Jul 19, 2008 10:14 AM PDT reply actions

You know, that's a really good question...

OK, Bayless is on the team, right? I mean, there’s no question. He’ll ostensibly have a full year of practices and games for the coaches to figure out whether or not he can man the point.

PK, on the other hand, presumably still has to prove himself to make the team.

If we assume both these things are given, then resting PK just to see if Bayless can run the point makes almost no sense at all.

So what does it mean? To me, it means there is no doubt now whether or not KP has made the cut (yes or no, I don’t know) and it means that Bayless is being showcased.

What else could it mean?

People are over thinking

I think they just want to see Bayless running the point and if Koponen is in the game, I imagine it would be easy for Bayless to slip into the two role each time Koponen got the ball. They just want to see Bayless run the point and they don’t want Koponen accidentally running the point when Bayless should be doing it.

by tominhawaii on Jul 19, 2008 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

agreed. the decision has likely been made...

So what did KP already know???

IMO, I dont think Koponen is ready to make the jump, he needs to find some high level competition where he will actually get significant playing time. Basically, I think this means Kop isnt going to be signed. If they were serious about him making the team, why wouldnt they want to play him? It makes very little sense to sit a player you think is going to be on your roster just to play 6 or 7 others that are not going to be there. As ken said, Bayless will get plenty of time to showcase his pg skills over the next year. I think that they have decided Petko needs more seasoning in Europe, and its not worth the last roster spot just to roll the dice on a 4th(5th?) point guard, when that pg isnt quite ready. So now that the decision is made, they want to give as much time to Bayless at pg as possible because he will actually be on our roster next year. Just one man’s opinion though…

On another note, the idea that if Koponen isnt signed this year, he is going to be lost forever in Europe doesnt make a lot of sense to me. Rudy signed a 3 year contract worth some nice moolah and made sure there was a low enough buyout that he could go to the NBA after any of the 3 years, which he did after year #1. I have heard that Koponen is a wanted man, so why cant he just negotiate the same type of deal with a low buy out? It doesnt seem like a sign him or lose him situation to me…

I see it the same way but I think they'll sign him

I know it’s only summer league but the Blazers know that other teams are watching the summer league and PK is only going to get better. He’s going to be signed because he is more trade fodder.

--. --- | -... .-.. .- --.. . .-. ...

by tominhawaii on Jul 19, 2008 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Disagree with your reasoning

(respectfully of course)

Rudy is an exceptional case. He played in the ACB from 2001-2008 so he had enormous following in Europe and clearly chose to come the the NBA for the competition. But he was drafted #24 instead of #3 or #4 last year because he had a huge buyout he could not break and had to play another year in the ACB. This was reported in numerous publications including O-live. So I don’t know where you get your information? The report from both Barrett and Quick is that Petteri has several offers for Europe next year for good money but require a 4 or 5 year commitment. The buy-out of those contracts is often over a million Euros which is almost $1.6M dollars at current rates. As teams can only pay $500K of this it is prohibitive for any but a lottery pick to escape.

Petteri does need more seasoning but for my unskilled eye he is the best player on the SL team and one of the best PG in Vegas. He will get plenty of higher level playing against top talent in Trail Blazer practices than he would get anywhere else in the world. If he keeps his shooting % up (big if for rookies) he will find and force playing time this year. He clearly is not overwhelmed in Vegas showing a court sense and poise of a veteran (but not yet the polish).

As far as worth the roster slot, we have no way of knowing the value the staff place on him or that spot but I am happy to trust their judgment. This will become more clear when the season is over and the roster has transformed from whatever trades we choose to make. By that point Petteri may be our #2 PG and in the rotation. Sometimes a player just blooms on you and it does shift the strategy to accommodate him. I can remember Lionel Hollins in his rookie season being nowhere near as good as Petteri hs shown so far (way too early to tell).

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Here is a.... Link?

Rudy commits himself to Joventut through 2010-2011. What the article doesn’t say is that he negotiated a very small buyout so he could go to the nba anytime he wanted. Otherwise he would still be wearing green next season.

If teams are willing to give Petko 5 year contracts for good money, they obviously want him pretty bad. Petko has leverage, he can say, sure I will sign that 4 year deal, but it has to have a buyout low enough that I can come to the nba after any of the 4 seasons. Thats what Rudy did and he wasn’t the best player in Europe at that time, so its not like he is some super special case. I believe his rise to greatness and rush of popularity in Europe for the most part came during this last season, and after the extension.

And wait a sec, Koponen the best player on our summer league team?? Well, I guess I will just respectfully disagree with that :) ...

Rudy's contract situation is included on Draft Express

in their July 2007 article summarizing the International players taken in the draft:

Still in the first round, the contract situation of players like Rudy Fernández and Tiago Splitter likely had a significant effect on their draft position. Concerns regarding their availability to sign for an NBA team probably scared away several teams, even if both are expected to join the League after only one more season. Still, in Rudy’s case, some monster European offer might come across his way to the NBA. It will be very interesting to see if he eventually follows the Vázquez route (to choose the European money over the NBA rookie contract), or whether Fran remains as an isolated accident.

On the other hand, what is usually perceived as a problem in the top-20, often becomes an attractive asset late in the first round or in the entire second round. Stashing international players overseas is a route to save money now and bet on the future, which ultimately might lead some franchise to artificially overrate some international player on its draft board. So ironically, the very same situation that could have ignited Rudy and Tiago’s fall in the draft, might have also stopped it.

I see how you can interpreted the Eurocup blurb but cannot find any confirmation of this in English on Google. Perhaps Animart1 can help? Since he had already dropped in the draft before this claimed extension blurb was after the fact as well.

Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

wiki confirmation for you my friend...
Rudy Fernández won the 2006 FIBA EuroCup and the 2007-08 ULEB Cup with Joventut Badalona. In July of 2007, his contract with Joventut was extended through 2011, however his contract was bought out early so that he could join the NBA.

Link?

I am not totally sure what you were asking. Basically the situation went as follows. Rudy dropped in the draft because of his contract with 1 year remaining that could not be bought out by an nba team. He got drafted, and signed this extension, making sure to keep the buyout to $500,000 so the PTB could execute it and bring Rudy over. His contract expired after this last season where he broke out, and the extension went into to effect. The PTB then bought out the new contract and brought Rudy over. At least that is how I interpereted the situation. I was just using this scenario as a precedent for what the Kop could do if he doesnt make the team this year. Leaving him in Europe doesnt have to be a 3 or 4 year commitment if Petko doesnt want it to be…

I don't know if there's going to be much of a difference with Bayless at PG

Bayless will bring the ball up and pass to some guy, then that guy can’t do much with the ball thus passes to Bayless. He dribbles around a screen and draws a foul.

The only difference is how much shot clock is used when Bayless shoots. I can only imagine two options for the Blazers, let Bayless be the scorer and have a chance to win or let Bayless be the distributor and have a sure loss.

I was looking at the roster and find it lacking in low post offense from the 4 and 5 positions. Bosh, Boozer, and Howard are obviously great players but they are the only three post players on the team.

Maybe they will just post up LeBron, Melo or Kobe if they need to, but how are they going to stop anyone inside if they run into foul trouble?

I'm trying to find a link to the article...

If I remember correctly the idea was to have 4 players on the floor at all times that could conceivably drive the lane. The whole system is predicated on the drive and dish. The idea is strategic double teams on one end while on the other mismatches galore.

Still looking for the article…patience…

Nice

I kind of figured they would be a pressing and trapping team with the make up but it still worries me a bit.

International basketball is not kind to low-post players.

The game is more predicated on the play of slashers and shooters. Remember after the 2004 Olympics when Tim Duncan said, “FIBA sucks”? It’s because he couldn’t get anything done.

I guess it is time to adjust to international play...

if we want to win again. We just don’t have the dominance that we had in the past.

Thanks for all the perspectives.

I always get excited to see how we will do in the Olympics. I mean how else will we be able to prove that free market capitalism is the best form of government if we don’t prove it on the court?

Oops!

I meant to add something about democracy which would have been a form of government while free market capitalism is an economic philosophy. My main reference of course is to the past and the battles between communism and representative democracy in the form of the USSR vs USA.

I thought the same thing

Lose Howard and they will suffer against Yao Ming but here is my take: We have tried traditional position selections in past years and now seem to be looking for three-point shooters, defenders of pick and roll and versatility. We don’t match up well with many teams but they don’t match up well with us either. Spain with Gasol, Gasol, Garbajosa, Rudy, Calderon, Navarro, Ricky et all seems the biggest challenge. I do trust the learning curve and the depth of expertise on the coaching staff as D’Antoni has tons of experience in international ball and the others bring NBA and college experience and talent evaluation skills in abundance.

What I found intriguing is that the practice players selected are nearly all lousy outside shooters. Kevin Martin shoots 40.9%. The next best is Luther Head at 35% and Andre Iguodala at 32.9%. The other 7 are all below 30% 3-point FG shooters. So the practice they want from these guys might be more athletic than indicative of the real international teams.

Sergio goes to work

Has someone posted this before? I didn’t see it, but it’s from Thursday so I may have missed it.

John Townsend, the shooting coach, is in the Canaries at Sergio’s request. He is making progress, but still has a way to go

Throughout every workout, Townsend charts the shots and keeps a percentage. Townsend said that last summer, James Jones and Steve Blake would go through a session and finish hitting 80 percent of their shots. He said Sergio is hitting about 60 percent.

“So he has some improvement to make,’’ Townsend said. “But today, there were two spots that killed him (the left corner and the left wing). At the end of last season, he would have 6 or 7 bad spots. My goal before I leave is for him to have maybe one bad spot, but hopefully zero.’’

Townsend said that Rodriguez has told him that he plans to report to Portland on Aug. 15. Coach Nate McMillan has already set an informal report date of Aug. 25 for players, which is about 10 days earlier than last season’s report date. That Rodriguez is already talking about reporting, let alone on Aug. 15, has sent ripples through the organization, which has never characterized Rodriguez as an ardent worker.

Yes I read that last night (O-Live) but I assumed I missed in on here

It is encouraging but didn’t we read nearly the same upbeat article from Quick about Jack’s summer work with a Blazer staff after his first year? Dave’s observation elsewhere from Vegas about practice shooting from NBA players is almost 100% and differs vastly from game shooting also makes me cautious of this story. I’m glad you posted it.
