Bill Ingram of Hoopsworld writes that JLess will be ROY
It's pretty amazing how quickly we have gone from being the brunt of most NBA jokes to the team recieving continual praise. In 3 years KP has become thought of as the top GM in the game nationally, which is extremely impressive but mind boggling considering the time frame he has done it in. KP is what Billy Beane would be if his owner was Paul Allen. If I run into you KP drinks are on me. Stay humble, hungry, and with a little patience all our Blazer dreams will come true! But for right now I'm enjoying the journey!
The following was written by Bill Ingram of www.hoopsworld.com .
Leaving Las Vegas
HOOPSWORLD's coverage of the Las Vegas Summer League will continue through its conclusion on Sunday, with Eric Pincus from LA coming to share his insight on what's going on at UNLV. This writer, however, is headed back to Dallas to sleep for a few days after logging six or seven games a day for eight days straight. Before I take off (literally), here are a couple of observations.
Jerryd Bayless is going to be Rookie of the Year.
Maybe that's an overstatement, as Bayless will have a ton of talent around him and someone like Beasley will put up better numbers on a team that's not as good. In fact, Greg Oden may give Bayless a run for his money right there in the same lineup. That said, Bayless has been hands-down the best floor leader of summer league. Execs and coaches agree that Pritchard really got a steal, as Bayless has averaged 27.7 points per game while shooting 45% and getting to the line 18 times per contest. He's not much of a distance shooter, but this kid can get into the lane and he doesn't shy away from contact. He also does a great job of finishing after being brutalized by sloppy seven-footers.
The best part? After getting iced up, taped, and bandaged he takes the time to come out and sign autographs for the hordes of kids who are looking for any attention they can get from a name player.
He should fit right in with the new breed of classy Blazers.

sprinkling salt
I saw that article as well, however I am entirely not sure why I still bother reading hoopsworld, as they tend to just float ideas without much thought. It is really the US Weekly of basketball. If you want to know what celebrity forgot to wear underwear, or what rumor has been floated by some biased local beat reporter these are golden resources. If this is going to cause much grief to those who are sure that Bayless is going to be the ROY, I present my substantive comeback: Hoopsworld just got done trashing Oden a couple of weeks ago [turn on bad guy music]. I don’t really think that Bayless is going to do much more than help in replacing Jack for the time being, I think he will prove to be undervalued in this draft by his 2nd or 3rd year.

We're in agreement
But, I think it’s more of a sign to the popularity of saying how great the Blazer roster is, and the prowess of KP. For the national media it is becoming a fad to heap praise on the Blazers, and even if it’s off base, I’ll take it. Considering we’ve been the punching bag of the league for quite a few years.
We have yet to see Bayless pass like a pg. To his credit he hasn’t had a ton of true pg minutes yet, and even when he does who’s he going to pass to. The more troubling statistic is the turn overs; which are very JJack esque. I’ld like to see those reduced more than anything. I expect to see JLess get decent minutes during the season, but not with 5 minutes left to go in the 4th. He’ll fill the role of sparking the offense on back to backs and when our offense is sluggish in general. I think he could be a solid role player to fill up the score board when we’re dragging, even as a rookie.

Turnovers
The turnovers don’t worry so much simply because it’s still summer league. If you’ve been watching the games, which I’m sure you have, it’s painfully obvious how sloppy the games are. The turnover totals for all teams have been off the charts.

Bayless is on a mission...
You can see it in his eyes, as the previous post about the many faces of JB pointed out… This year is going to be SO fun!

Both Rudy and Oden
will likely end up in the R.O.Y. voting ahead of Bayless. And Beasely and Gordon could well be ahead of any of our three. l

Well...
Summer League doesn’t really project much
Last year Nate Robinson was Summer League MVP
The all-stars: (The only ones who made the ROY top ten are in bold. The other top rookies didn’t fare so well in summer. – or maybe didn’t play, I didn’t check on that.)
- Aaron Brooks – G, Houston Rockets
- Al Thornton – F, Los Angeles Clippers
- Craig Smith – F, Minnesota Timberwolves
- Javaris Crittenton – G, Los Angeles Lakers
- Jose Juan Barea – G, Dallas Mavericks
- Kevin Durant – F, Seattle SuperSonics
- Kyle Lowry – G, Memphis Grizzlies
- Louis Williams – G, Philadelphia 76ers
- Marco Belinelli – G, Golden State Warriors
- Rodney Stuckey – G, Detroit Pistons
- Rudy Gay – F, Memphis Grizzlies
- Randy Foye – G, Minnesota Timberwolves
- Spencer Hawes – C, Sacramento Kings
- Von Wafer – G, Denver Nuggets

Some were not rookies...
like Nate Robinson, Rudy Gay, Randy Foye. Was Craig Smith a rookie> He had an OK year. Rudy Gay had a heckuva year, and I like Stuckey, Louis Williams, and Crittenton (when healthy) alot

I would be very surprised it Bayless won the ROY award
He will probably end up only being the 3rd best rookie on our team. I think Oden, Rudy Fernandez, Beasley, Love, and Marc Gasol have the best chances of winning the ROY.

I'll take KP's View
Like one of you said, it’s nice to get some attention. As far as Bayless, I listen more to KP and the coaches than the beat writers. After all, they have just a little more experience and a much better track record when it comes to evaluating talent and picking players to fill needs. My view on Bayless is KP’s view. He’ll improve, but I think KP will turn out to be dead right, which is that as this draft is evaluated in a year or two, Bayless will in fact turn out to have been the 4th best player in the draft . In fact, he was almost even with Mayo on their charts. All we’re seeing is the fact that KP and his scouts and coaches were right. KP has been saying all along that they had a very comprehensive book on Bayless. In turn, they picked him not only because he was the 4th best player in the draft, but because he had the skills to complement Roy. Not take over, mind you, but complement. He’ll never be a pure PG in the mold of a Rose. Rather, he’ll share that with Roy. Different concept. They wanted someone who could guard the opposing PG’s, for example, and other than Westbrook, he was the top rated guard for that duty. They wanted an attacker, and he’s demonstrated that he’s as good as any guard we could’ve gotten in that role. And, they want someone with the brains and skills to share the PG duties with Roy. We know the kid is bright and has the skills, but we also know that those skills will need to improve. But, as Mac knows, you can teach those skills – since he himself made that transition after turning pro.
Will he be ROY? I have no idea. In fact, I suspect that Beasley or Oden will be the more likely ones. But like KP said, give him 40 games and he’ll have it pretty much figured out. I still think that the Blazers believe that they have the three guards for the three guard rotation Mac likes now on the team. Fernandez is the third. Fernandez fits nicely as well. After all, he brings an outside game to the table that’s likely better than Bayless or Roy.

Clarification wanted
Eben, it sounds as though you’ve got a good source for claiming that for “someone who could guard the opposing PGs . . . other than Westbrook, he [Bayless] was the top rated guard for that duty.” I hadn’t read that before. Do you remember where it came from? I’m wondering who is doing the rating in this case.

Not going to get enough minutes this year...
In my mind, if you don’t start, you have no chance at the ROY award. Although I think he will be an excellent complement to BRoy as well (and the 2nd unit could use Blake’s veteran leadership), I just don’t see him starting until either really late in the year or next year.

And that is a good thing
I want Bayless working for minutes. I want him to attack the hoop when he comes in. Playing hard defense and making us all exited about his prospects. Then in his 2nd year we start him but make him understand that he has to pull it back and few notches so he doesn’t make too many turnovers. Then 3rd year we’ll put him back on the bench and bitch cause he’s a tweaker now.
That’s the Jarrad Jack plan.

you’ve gotta have the minutes to prove you are worthy

It's worth remembering
The in the early-mid 90’s, Trader Bob Whitsitt did pretty similar things with the Sonics and was thought of as the best GM in the league.
If you think about it, Payton, Kemp, Detlef, Hawkins were better at their peak than Roy, Oden, Aldridge and Webster are now, then we have to imagine that its possible things wont work out for the Blazers. I think we all believe that our guys (especially Oden, who could make all the difference in the world) have a better ceiling (except Payton), but lets not get ahead of ourselves. I think we’re in a better position cap/roster wise than were the Sonics back then, so that is good. All I’m sayin’, the trophy ain’t in the glass case just yet.

And let's not forget
that even if the Blazers DO become the greatest NBA team there ever was, we’re still doomed because of global warming.

Think Microwave
T-Rex reminds me of Vinnie Johnson from the Pistons.
6’2” , strong, aggressive driver, streak shooter. Meshed
nicely with a veteran team as he would hit the open man,
get into the lane and play some defense. Most of all could
come off the bench and heat up !
