Dean Demopoulos's comments
So far as I can determine, nobody has commented on the most authoritative tidbit of Trailblazers news/rumor yet to emerge from the Las Vegas Summer League. Did you miss it? In the during-game interview of Dean Demopoulos, discussing Travis Outlaw's progress, Demopoulos said (paraphrasing), "Everybody talks about our big three of Roy, Oden, and Aldridge, but we think we have a big four." In the context, the fourth member of the big four clearly was Outlaw. I've wiped the Minnesota game from our TiVo, but perhaps somebody else can retrieve the exact wording.
One assumes that Demopoulos, as a coach, knows what he is talking about; one assumes, further, that he likes his job and knows that to stray too far from the reservation with unfounded remarks could endanger it.

Dean
seemed like a really cool guy that you could just go up to and talk to him for hours about basketball.
Travis is an integral part of this team, he isn’t going anywhere, at least until Rudy can take his place as the sixth man

You are correct
The other point Demo made was that Batum has looked impressive in SL practices (faint praise, considering the quality of the other Blazer bigs)
If Outlaw can continue to hit 3 pointers at a good percentage, it will cut into Webster’s PT. I thought it was interesting that Travis was used more “down the stretch” of games last year, even though Martell is the better defender of the two. With Rudy coming on board, the minutes crunch at SF will get even tighter (because there won’t be any “swing” minutes leftover for Webster at the 2, and Nate says he’ll use Outlaw exclusively at the 3)

I don't believe
Web played much 2 last year at all. Maybe during the Roy injuries, but if memory serves correctly, Jack played backup 2 most of the time.

6th Man
I believe that Outlaws role on the team is as important as anyones. We need someone to lead the team off the bench, and come in and give our guys some energy. He’s definitely one of my favorite players and I know everyone loves him. Travis is our man!

the big four
It certainly made me sit up when I heard him say that …
He comment on two things: his athleticism and his clutch play.
He noted that for trout the first bucket and the last were no different and he wanted to take the shot for both.
I used to think that Pryz was next most valuable. Sounds like trout is 4.

taking a shot
Travis is valuable because of that comment, that is what separates him mentally, and physically, he can get the shot off. there might be 5 players in the NBA that can defend his two steps and lift.

KP made a comment during the pre draft workouts to the media
that in regards to Travis, we would have to be offered something extrememly valuable and frankly more that most teams would want to five up. If Travis keeps up the good work, and proves all the nay-sayers wrong, I would be thrilled if he was a lifelong Blazer. Even if it means saying bye bye bye to the love my life! (sorry Batman… :-) )

Yeah, I remember that comment from KP.
After watching Travis last year, I don’t see how it can be a surprise that he is so highly regarded by the team. It says a lot when you’re the go-to guy at the end of some crucial games ….. and you come through!

the core four
its actually alot deeper then that because Blake, Joel, Rudy and Fry are also going to contribute. Who’d I forget?

I thought it was really interesting that the guys interviewing him
asked about Martell. Dean made a few quick comments on Webster but then said something along the lines of ” we also have Outlaw.” than made more comments about him including the “big 4”

That was a telling comment
Shows just how far we were from actually entertaining trade offers for him.
I thought it was a lot closer than that.

humble talented dudes that can dunk on yao and pau gasole arent a dime a dozen. and he’s clutch…
i’ve always been really adiment about keeping travis…...unless there’s some way we could package him for LBJ, the most clutch player in the game….i think Lebron and Roy would be comparable to MJ and Pippen..not gonna happen though…..all that said, travis is the man..he aint goin nowhere

lol,
I’ve thought long and hard about the LBJ/Roy inverse to MJ/Pippen (the roles of sg and sf would be reversed). One thing though, LBJ definitely isn’t the most clutch player in the game.

That must have been some kind of misquote
Travis is rail thin and no one would mistake him for being big. Tall yes, but big no. He probably meant Raef LaFrentz as he is a pretty big dude. My gut tells me that the Blazers are in negotiations with Robert “Tractor” Traylor. This man is big in every sense of the word and would certainly give us a big 4.

Or is he just plumping Outlaw's trade bait status?
You saw how Portland pushed about three guys above Bayless in the draft. I think they’ve got the rest of the league hypnotized.

Dean Transcribed
I went back and listened to Dean’s comments again (Joel Meyers in parentheses) my implied words in italics and offer the following part of the interview:
Travis Outlaw too is a huuuge part of what we do. He’s one of the better…(it’s a shame the guy’s not an athlete)...Yeah ha ha .. yeah he does some things where you just like whoa did he really do that but but you know he’s one of the great clutch players – I mean young players in the league. I mean the shot at the beginning of the game is the same one to win the game at the end and uh you know, he takes it and wants to take it and makes it so uh that’s rare too so we’re real happy with him and I would consider us to have the big four and not a big three.(Yeah and how do you slice up the pot?) That’s heh (that’s going to be the difficult aspect: minutes, rotation and how many .. the L*kers and I bring that up because I was with them this year and I’ve been with them for many years now.. they went deep – they went nine guys on a regular basis and a lot of coaches don’t like to go that deep) Yeah no question. But um it’s confusing at the moment when you have that many possibilities but you know eventually we’ll – this all will shake out. There will be real good competition and we still have a lot to learn about these guys ha ha you know cause they’re so young and you know last year with Greg being hurt – that really was our fact finding year – how does everybody play with him, you know and with him being hurt its kind of set us back but then we had such a productive year the expectations rise along with it so uh you knw this should be the fact finding year, really to find out exactly who these guys are with Greg in the lineup and uh – but its not going to be we’re going to be considered to be a team that’s on the bubble to make the playoffs and should make the playoffs and that would be our goal as I said. We want to make the playoffs. You can’t win it if you are not in it.
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."

Good Piece
Travis is absolutely a key player. After all, he averaged 14.3 ppg over the last 66 games coming off the bench while playing both SF and PF. And this year, he dropped the fishing to stay in shape and improve. We tend to forget that Champions aren’t just about the stars. Coaches routinely say that the next most valuable players on teams are those that can put points on the board, and cover two positions, as opposed to one. This is why if Frye, who’s been working all summer to improve his shot, can add more points when playing, that you may not see him traded in the future as well. He gives us a credible bench player at both the C and PF spots.
KP has made comments that also back up these observations. Travis may not be “ideal” in some ways, but he brings offensive talents to the table that equally cause all kinds of problems for competitors in other ways. How many SF’s can actually guard the guy – for example (not many). And if he starts tearing up the opposing teams SF, it forces the PF or Center to double over – because no SG can have much of an impact on Travis. And that, with our front line, creates all kinds of mismatches. He’s a great piece to have on a team.

nobody can guard travis....
not kobe, not tmac, nobody…..doesn’t matter who you put on him, he can get his shot up…and hit it with a good percentage, even in the clutch….
i really like greg and lamarcus, but behind roy, travis is my favorite blazer
o yea…..martell is gonna get better too
cant wait to see Rudy, Roy, Travis, Lamarcus, and Greg finish out the fourth quarter. That’s gonna be a sight to see….

that aint right. All that conditioning wont matter if he doesnt come in mentally prepared. Someone get Travis some Power Bait ASAP!

travis and martell
were never going anywhere other than the practice facility.. we still have the taste Jermaine leaving town and blowing up in our collective mouthes ..travis finally got the hint that he need to stay in portland and work out in world class facilities and with world class players to get better.. I still really do not see why the world is on fire for martell..what do you all see that I dont.. ..no disrespect meant but he is not that good, and may be getting close to his ceiling travis has just begun..the only thing that can hold him back is him and his fishing in starkville
if it can be conceived it can be achieved

When you say "we"
do you mean “we the fans” or “we, the Blazers”? I’m sure that KP pays no attention to what happened decades ago, but I suppose some of the fans still remember that trade with bitterness … but did they complain as loudly when he was traded as they did after he started to bloom?
I have only a limited amount of patience with developing players. Not x number of years, but how much they have improved from year to year. Baby steps are OK at first, but I have to see some pretty consistent improvement before I want to hang on to them forever. I think Martell has talent, but for whatever reason he’s still inconsistent. For years we’ve talked about maybe Nate not being the right coach for him (esp. in his Sarge mode) ... and for Martell’s sake (since I like the kid a lot) I want him to be where he will become the very best he can be. If it’s here, hurrah, if it’s elsewhere : best of luck.

consistency is about confidence.....
martell, at 21, is still developing that…...remember, even with his physical gifts, he’s still a kid playing in a man’s league…..but he is developing, there’s no denying that…
supposedly he threw down the nastiest dunk ever in the blazer practice facility, right over greg…
more or less, he’s a keeper….that’s not set in stone, but its more than likely

Martell misplaced
I think the frustration with Martell is that you expect more than just a solid role-player with the #6 pick in a draft, especially when you trade down, passing on Chris Paul and Deron Williams, to get him. I don’t think we’d have a problem with what Martell has done so far if he was picked in the 10-15 range.
I also think it’s just a little funny….with all the excitement (1000% justifiable) over KP’s contributions to the team, it’s just a little funny that Trout was actually Bob Whitsitt’s parting gift.
When we traded Jermaine, I didn’t have a problem at all with the deal. Dale Davis seemed like a good pickup to bolster our frontline after getting worked in the playoffs. Jermaine had been here quite a few years and hadn’t really done more than flash some ability here and there. It wasn’t like we were giving up someone who was a daily contributor.

I think people also forget
How many high draft picks turn out to be a bust. The Blazers are still getting value out of Webster and he is still improving. I think he had a huge breakthrough in attitude last summer. This year I expect a breakthrough in his game.

I begged, I screamed, I cryed… put in Jermain!!!! Let’s see what he can do. 3 minutes does not tell the tale. PUT HIM IN THE GAME RICK!!!!!
But no one listened.
The Blazers keep not announcing me as couch. What’s that about?

It is Paul Allen that remembers
what happened with Jermaine and reportedly has mentioned it as one of his greatest regrets in trades. That would make it important to KP.
Martell improved every single statistic last year. Even on a 36 minute basis that is still true. He started 70 games last year up from 27 and did so on a vastly improved team. Finally his statistics at age 21 compare favorably with the rest of the league SFs at the same age. Stats are not everything but they are available where subjective opinions from the coaches are not so available. I don’t pretend to know what the team will do with players this year. But Martell is not an obvious move to me.
Aldridge said. "We feel like we can beat any team. We feel like we can beat the Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Mavericks, whoever any night right now, and we'll still be here when those teams get old and their guys retire. We're going to be here for a long time."
