What the Camby firesale means to us.
We all know about the "Camby to the Clippers for a bag of chips and a big gulp " trade, which was only possible because the Clips were under the cap and the Nugs wanted to avoid the luxury tax.
As we all know, the Blazers will be under the cap next off-season (barring a trade of RLEC). What teams might be near or over the luxury tax and might want to give us a player for free? More specifically, what players could be available for a trade exception and a few second rounders?
I thought it was interesting that KP has said before that when you have cap-space then sometimes you can get a player for free, for instance, in facilitating a multi-party trade.
I think that a lot of people have looked at the '09 cap-space plan and looked at the '09 free agents list and said "Meh, there isn't anyone we want. The '09 cap-space plan is overrated." However, the '09 free agents list may have less importance to us than a '09 close to the luxury tax list.
Suns: Diaw, Barbosa
Celtics: Kendrick Perkins
Knicks: (lotsa people)
Maverics: Dampier, Stackhouse, Howard
Magic: Nelson
L*kers : Farmar , Walton, Vlad
Any other teams? Any other candidates?
P.S. I don't necessarily
mean that we WANT any of these players. Just that they MAY be available.

I think there are some interesting players on that roster
with Balkman leading the charge. I love watching that guy play. I am not sure he would be a good first unit fit, but he might rule school on the second unit and as a good perimeter defender who can guard multiple positions.

If I may humbly submit a correction to your post
Edit:
Knicks: NO ONE
Having a whole pile of cap space could be a great benefit for us. I trust KP to make solid moves and be planning well into the future. I don’t think he would sign a mediocre free agent just because we had some extra cap space. KP with cap flexibilty and his pritch-slapping glove are a scary combination. Sometimes I imagine that Pritchslaps look like an 18th century glove slap that leads to a pistol duel.
Also, I think the Camby firesell means a new batch of Western conference rankings in the fanposts.

Nate Robb, son
Nate Robb brings passion, energy, spark, and a feisty attitude that not all of our guys have. I mean, nothing against B-Roy or Aldridge (or Oden, from what I can tell; and you guys KNOW I love Roy the most), but those guys, uh, “keep it professional” pretty much all the time. Nate Robb certainly don’t keep it professional all the time. He does have a great attitude and personality off the court that I think will jibe with what fans want from their Rip City ‘Ballers.
The other thing is, I think we’ll miss J-Jack, because one of the things he brought the team was emotional leadership. From what I hear about Nate Robb and what I know about the guy, he brings that. He certainly brought it for the UW teams that Roy played for.
Oh, he’s also been playing with Roy for what… 13 years? Pretty much since the beginning.
With that said, if he’s everything I said he is, the Knicks won’t want to let him go. However, if the Knicks suck yet again next year, even without Isaih “If all I’m remembered for is being a good basketball player, then I’ve done a bad job with the rest of my life” Thomas coaching amulet -1000, then it’s Blow It Up Time in the MSG.

Getting a player from NY
Would be like doing your grocery shoping at a toxic waste dump, the only ones on this list that do any thing for me are Barbosa,Diaw or Howard.

Edited post.
I just mean players that may have some value that are conceivably available in a salary dump to avoid the lux tax scenario. e.g. no one is dumping Dirk for salary, but they might dump a lower tier player who is a bit overpaid, or a player like Dirk could get traded and we could land a nice player to help facilitate the trade.

Indiana is projected to possibly be in tax territory next year.
I’d take Granger off their hands…

I dont understand the deal
I thought trades had to be within 10% value and there is no way Camby is in the range of a second round pick… if this has been explained I missed it
"Meow" --- My cat Bonzi insinuating Trail Blazer fans have forgotten about how important Steve Blake and Joel Pryzbilla are to the team.

Yeah..
I found that confusing, as well. I’m guessing it’s player-for-player swaps that have to jive, salary-wise. Since it’s a pick swap consideration in exchange for Camby, I don’t see how you could put a dollar amount on that, thusly it’s o.k. (I’m not sure that’s right but all I can think of – if anybody’s got a better answer, I’d love to know!).

Ok
Basically when you are under the salary cap you don’t have to match the incoming salary.
So since the Clips are like 15 or more, million under the cap they can take Marcus Camby’s 15million dollar contract and they don’t have to send 15million in outgoing salary.
This is how the Jason Richardson trade worked in 2007. Golden State traded Jason Richardson (who has a salary of like 12-13mil ) for Brandan Wright (on a rookie contract, 3mil or so) on Charlotte. Since Charlotte was so far under the cap they could absorb Richardson’s contract and not have to match it in outgoing salary.
So in 2009 when we are like 30mil under the cap (raef expires), technically we could trade Webster, Diogu and future 1st rounder for like Tayshaun Prince or Devin Harris and not have to match salary. This gives us a lot of flexibility in trades.

Still..
How do you quantify picks or “right to trade” picks in a monetary sense? Their projected starting salary?
Like, if two teams are over the cap and they do something like “Player A for Player B and two second-round picks” – how do those picks factor in to the equation?
Also, I think it’s really funny how people here ALWAYS refer to Raef as RLEC and the one time I’ve seen someone name him, they’re talking about his contract, instead (“raef expires”) – just thought that was sorta ironical.

oddly enough
picks have no monetary value according to the league even though first rounders have guaranteed contracts.
Weird

Hawks (if Josh Smith is re-signed): Joe Johnson could become redundant for them
Celtics: Ray Allen, if the Celts WOO closes and/or Ray loses a step
Bobcats (if Okafor is re-signed): Gerald Wallace, Jason Richardson, ‘Stache (one of those three), and Felton surely is available now, but maybe not later.
Bulls: Hinrich, Nocioni, Larry Hughes – take ‘yer pick
Cavs: Ben Wallace or Big Z, take ‘yer pick
for the Mavs I’d add Jason Terry to your list if their WOO closes (but not Dirk)
Nuggets: Nene, Kenyon Martin, and what the heck, Carmelo (if disgruntled enough)
Pistons: Billups is the obvious candidate with the ascendance of Rodney Stuckey. I’d throw in Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun.
Warriors: Al Harrington (if Maggette makes him expendable)
Rockets: McGrady (blasphemy I know, but he’s very expensive and at some point they may choose to rebuild around Yao)
Pacers: Troy Murphy or Dunleavy’s contracts would probably be available in exchange for a bag of balls
Clips: Kaman or Tim Thomas look like their kindling in the event they go to a fire sale
Grizz: Buy one euro, get one (not named Gasol) free.
Heat: Marcus Banks (hot potato contract?)
Bucks: Mo Williams – is he still on the team? ‘cuz that’s a lotta money for a lotta years for a team that will lose a lotta games. Heck why not Michael Redd?
T’Wolves: Mean Mike Miller or Brian Cardinal could become redundant depending on how their young guys develop (or don’t develop and they start liquidating)
Nets: Vince Carter (obviously) or Devin Harris (depending on what they want around LeBron)
Hornets: Posey in, Peja (or Mo Pete?) out.
Knicks: If they can’t dump Zach or Curry, I could see them trying to unload Jamal Crawford, Quentin Richardson, or Jared Jeffries
The Magic would give KP free trips to Disney World for life if he took Rashard Lewis’ contract off their hands.
Sixers: Dalembert would be expendable if they had a serviceable and cheaper C at that time
Kings: Brad Miller, easily. Also, if any of their young bigs pan out, then take your pick among any of their more expensive bigs as well
OKC: Ridnour or Watson; Collison
Raptors: Kapono.
Jazz: AK47, easily. Okur or Harpring would be longshots, depending on the development of others at their positions
Wizards have lots of long term, expensive, and redundant players, and they might want to shed one or two among the following: Thomas/Daniels/Haywood/Songaila/Stevenson/Blatche; heck, how about Caron Butler for giggles
Except for the Ray Allen scenario I painted, I think we can safely rule out the C/PF/SG possibilities on this list.
So that leaves veteran PG’s like Billups, Daniels, Ridnour/Watson, Mo Williams, Devin Harris, Hinrich, Nelson, Barbosa, Farmar, and maybe Felton or Terry.
At SF, you have Rashard Lewis, Joe Johnson, Gerald Wallace, Nocioni, Tayshaun, Al Harrington, McGrady, Dunleavy, Tim Thomas, Mike Miller, Kapono, Harpring, a Wizard, and maybe AK47 or VC if you consider them SF’s (I know I left some people off that I would consider even more of a longshot than this list).
Boiling it down even further, here are the vets I would like to see KP consider from this list (assuming they would be available at that time at salary-dump prices): Billups, Antonio Daniels, Devin Harris, Tayshaun, McGrady, Joe Johnson, Mike Miller… that’s about it.

but good info
I might drop Mo Williams off the list as the Bucks have enough talent to make the playoffs in the East and have finally got a coach who should be able to put it togehter (why they fired Terry Porter I will never know.)
Tim Thomas does not pass the culture test and I dont see how retaining Josh Smith makes Joe Johnson expendable as he can play all wind positions. I could see how Josh Childress might be more expendable, but not Joe Johnson.
I dont think LAL minds being over cap if they are contenders, which they are now, so I would rule out Farmar.
I think Felton might be interesting and more available then you let on as he was supposedly being shopped near draft time. He seems like he could do a lot of damage not being the first option and also not having to handle the ball every possession. Wallace might be available too, but I think they showed their commitment to him last summer.
Thanks for the good post
