Trade for a Veteran?
Wats up fellow Blazer Fans, I am new here but have been reading posts here for the last month. I was curious if anyone was watching the summer league game yesterday against Minnesota during the David Aldridge interview. He talked about the possibility of the Blazer packaging a few of our young guys for a veteran like Vince Carter. What are your thought on this, and who do you think we would make a move for? i would assume a vet SF because that seams to be our weakest link ( no offense to Webster or Outlaw, I love these guys).

I doubt it will happen
If you listen to the main message from management, it has always been the same: they are building for 2-3 years down the road… they want sustainable growth, not a ‘spurt’ that costs any amount of their future.
To me, this means no veteran this year. Unless Webster or Outlaw is an absolute bust at SF, they will get the entire year to show us what they can do with Oden in the middle.

David Aldridge is a Moron
He knows a lot about nothing. He spent the first 20 minutes of that interview talking about how Randy Foye is a “phenominal guard” and “if he stays healthy will be an elite guard”. What an idiot, of course that was in response to the ridiculously lopsided PRITCHSLAP how we acquired BROY, an actual All-Star guard and elite Guard of the league. He then started stating, in response to the inquiry, what do the PTB need to get over the championship hump, that we need a vet. Well thats a newsflash, however he doesn’t consider that perhaps by the time we are in the championship position our BIG THREE will be vets. And then he says, b/c he clearly knows nothing, VINCE CARTER! Of all people to throw out there he says Vince Carter like a complete idiot. He could have just said oh Shaquille O’neal, which would have made just as much sense.
We dont need a vet right now. At some point our needs ma be that, but I believe we are about to let this proverbial cake bake…and a vet is gonna be the icing.

Foye could be really good
Roy for Foye was a steal for us but that doesn’t mean Foye can’t play.
I’m completely with you on Vince Carter- that would be a ridiculous move. I wouldn’t be opposed to making a move for a Shane Battier type but now is obviously not the time to do anything crazy like a move for Vince.

Elite Guard?
Probably not. But a pretty good starter, that’s believable. I really don’t think he is a point guard though, and their front court is made up of two short power forwards. Way to go Kevin Mchale. They did get Mike Miller though and unloaded a lot of bad contracts, so that’s good. Although OJ is still better than any of their guards but whatever.
What could make this trade even more lopsided though, is that we got RLEC from that deal. If we pull off a move and get like T. Prince or something crazy like that, it basically means that the Wolves gave up Brandon Roy and Tayshaun Prince for Randy Foye. Yeah….
I know they got TREC for RLEC, but they didn’t use Trec for anything if I remember right.
Also, I’m going to have to agree with you, we aren’t competing for a championship now, so why would we trade for a vet? Doesn’t make any sense. Then again Jon Barry said that we should have traded the #1 pick last year to get a veteran lol.

two seperate trades
It was Telfair+TREC for Raef (contract wasn’t expiring yet, we had to pay a couple extra years) and the #7 pick with which we took Foye. That was the Boston part of it.
With Minny it was just Foye+cash for Roy.
I know that you know this, I just think its important to separate them when analyzing it from the other teams’ points of view.

Good analogy
No need for a vet right now. Let the cake bake for a half-season or so, or maybe a full season. Maybe at the trading deadline, maybe next summer, I think the Bs are getting a solid 3 who can lock down the Kobes of the world, and Martell is out (unless he picks things up). If so, next year, a title’s not out of the question.

woah now i didnt come up w/ that analogy as much as I would want to
the master KP said that and it’s completely perfect description for what he is doing :)

vet SF
We should try to trade for James Jones—wily defender, bb IQ through the roof, sharp 3 pt shooter can spread the floor, and a great “culture” guy. I bet you could get him pretty cheap too. Injuries are a concern
last season
was a fluke, he’ll never get in line with our team and probably would be a locker room cancer. i also hear he hates babies!

he also said Chauncey Billups might be on the trading block
i would definately have to listen if a trade for him came up, he would be a perfect fit on this team for next 2-3 years, then Pete comes in and takes over the league

Billups
Would you trade any combo of: REAF, Blake, Sergio, Webster, Outlaw, Petko, and Frye for Billups? I would, even if it included both Web and Outlaw. Billups would be awsome for this club until his current contract is up in 2012. ($11 mil this year, with raises up to $14.2 mil in 2012) Which btw is the same year, the, (almost guarenteed) extentions for Roy and LMA will take affect. Meaning Billups contract would come off our books right when ROY’s and LMA’s contracts would go up, talk about timing. Ok I go to go look at ESPN’s trade machine to see what will work.
This trade works:
Chauncey Billups
Salary: $11,050,000 Years Remaining: 4
For: Steve Blake, Channing Frye, Travis Outlaw
The Blazers give up two young promising players in Outlaw and Frye, and a good back up/starter quality point and get Billups. For Detroit this might not be enough, (Future draft picks may be needed, but then again Denver just traded Camby for nothing) they do get younger, and more athletic, and have Stuckey and Blake at the point, which is still pretty good.
For Portland, they would clear up some roster space up front, and at SF where Rudy might get some time, and Batum as well, (maybe not next year, but in the future for sure imo) Frye is not the type of back up Portland needs imo, they need a brusier rebounding machine.
Too old
by the time the Blazers are 25 years old he’s 33. Be crapping out right at the high point of the run.
If they get someone it will be someone who’s about 26 or 27 years old now.
I was nothing thinking
about resigning him once his contract is out. I was thinking more along the lines of having him here to help Baylass and Kopenen learn the NBA ropes, before they both take over and play significant minutes.
not* thinking...
that title was suppose to be, “I was not thinking”
I bet KP and company got a good laugh
from that “trade for Vince Carter” idea. They would sooner make a trade to get Z-Bo back. They wouldn’t sign VC for half the price of his current deal if he were the last free agent in the world and they had $30 mil in cap space. And they would absolutely, positively, 100% NEVER trade a six pack oof Miller Lite for him, much less anybody on the active roster.
In case I haven’t made this clear, uh… I wouldn’t like this trade.

KP doesn't have Miller Lite with which to trade
It’s bad for the culture. They drink green tea on the plane rides home after victories.

It's funny when "experts" talk as if any veteran will do
We’ve had a post on some upcoming FA’s that would fit our culture. We also had some great posts on why and when a team would want a veteran. They model something for your team that you need. They bring an needed ability that comes through years of playing the right way.
And the name you come up with is Vince Carter?
If all we need is veterans - any old veterans will do - why don’t we see if we can steal Zbo back from NY?

and if this trade somehow did happen
we could use another quote from Gob, “I’ve made a huge mistake.”

Theres always money in the Banana stand.......
to pay Vince his bloated contract.

I hate the idea of Vince Carter playing here
Maybe a few years ago when we didn’t have a guy named Roy, it would’ve been an idea, but any trade that involves bringing a guy who requires the ball as much as Carter should end with no thank you. Carter still is a player, but he will never be a winner.

Carters?
We don’t need no stinking Carters!
They consider themselves forward thinking in Portland from what friends tell me. Apparently they have this global warming issue handled. They’ve found ways to end your life as a profit making venture. And they’re hip to counter culture icons.
