The PG Squeeze
My first few questions for Blazers Edge is whether or not the positive play by Petteri Koponen has created more stressful decisions for the front office, and how it may affect our training camp roster.
1.) Would things be a lot easier had Petko had a mediocre Summer League?
2,) Would you rather avoid the dramatic reality of the situation and go back to the pre Summer League assumed roster?
3.) Does an impressive Summer League by a Honka Playboy warrant NBA consideration?
Petteri Koponen:
According to two separate NBA people who were in the building, it was Koponen that stole the show once again, showing good ball-handling skills, an ability to change directions quickly on the fly, excellent leadership skills, great poise, a high intelligence level, terrific intangibles, and a real winning attitude that made him standout in everything he did. The same "plays like an American guard" compliment that we heard from a different scout who saw him in Orlando conducting another multi-team workout was again repeated here—meaning he doesn’t suffer from the same athletic short-comings that other international guards do. His shooting mechanics were critiqued, but apparently his jumper went in at a good rate, particularly on pick and pop plays.
-DraftExpress
Sergio Rodriguez:
I understand that Sergio is having the first summer off since he was 12 years old. He has been playing for the Spanish National Team since then, and of course been in the NBA the last few seasons. I also understand that he has communicated a level of clarity that he has seen since last season, and that he wants to be the guy in the gym 20 days before any other player reports, and anticipates fighting for minutes. He realizes this is a make or break season. He also embraces this summer away from the National team and has been with staying with his Mom and Dad, and his happiness is at a very high level.
Despite being one of Spain’s biggest talents after progressing through the ranks of Spain’s national youth teams, and starting for top flight side Estudiantes as a teenager, there were concerns in Europe that Rodriguez was going to America too soon.
Those doubts were quickly erased in Japan, where Rodriguez evolved into one of Spain’s most explosive players at the FIBA World Championship. Rodriguez’s jaw-dropping performance against Argentina in the semifinals stunned everyone.
-Yahoo Sports (2006-2007)
Are we ready to shun a player whom we gave the same type of love and anticipation as we are starting to show Petko? Sergio hasn't really ever screwed the team over in a game, and has been a solid fan favorite the last three years, will Petko do any better?
Is there room on the roster for both players? I love them both, and want both in a Blazer uniform next year, however I think if that is possible you will ikely see Bayless traded away... Are you okay with that?
Let me know.

Oh
I thought this was going to be a picture of some girl who’s dating one of our PGs.
If Koponen is signed, he’ll probably play in Idaho the first half of the year, which means nothing is changed.
He MIGHT pass Sergio in the rotation for 3rd PG, but even then, he might go to Idaho just for PT.
If he stays in Portland, look for Sergio to get traded for a draft pick or be a toss-in to help salaries match on a deal at the trading deadline.

I want everybody in, and to push for a starting spot.
I like Blake, and he is solid, but if I have to watch him run through the lane like he is taking a guided tour too many more times my head may explode (medical condition- needless to say, my helmet is at its’ physical limits). I would love to see either of those guys make a run at the starting spot. I would love to have a pass first guy that can finish, and I think both of those guys can become that before Blake or Bayless. If they don’t pan out there are worse fates to suffer (at least we aren’t counting on them to be franchise).

Hmmmmm ....
I think if that is possible you will ikely see Bayless traded away..
I’ve been thinking about that. KP has been really building Jerryd up …. unusually so it seems to me. But of course he might doing that to further his own growing reputation as a drafting genius. Or of course because he thinks Bayless is really going to be that good for us.
You know, with BRoy handling the ball, setting up, driving and finishing, weren’t most amateur analysts thinking that his guard partner needed to be able to shoot the ball well? That ability would best compliment Brandon when he was triple teamed and forced to give it up or throw it back out from a drive? In other words, if Brandon as the 2 guard was doing 1 guard tasks, our 1 guard needed to have 2 guard skills, i.e., a shooter.
I wonder if the Blazers, having never had Jerryd work out for them, were aware of his bad shooting mechanics? That’s not something that is easily corrected. Anyway, I’m wondering if this situation could lend at least the tiniest bit of credence to Outlaw is Rejector’s thoughts on Bayless being traded.

I love all these purple boxes
In all seriousness though,
I wonder if the Blazers, having never had Jerryd work out for them, were aware of his bad shooting mechanics?
I seriously doubt KP has ever been surprised. In his life. Ever.

Somehow
I suspect that they knew his game better before drafting him than we know it after watching a few summer league games.
I don’t know why I think that. Maybe just a gut feeling.

The Finn's skills won't translate
versus legit NBA point guards. At least not yet. I like his demeanor on the court, but… his handle isn’t good enough. He dribbles too high. He’s not comfortable enough with his left. His mechanics are clunky (which means he’s very streaky, and not in a good way). More worrisome in the long run, he seems just quick enough to get by the summer league guys, but not quick enough to penetrate against “real” NBA points. (PK going to the rim takes literally three times as long as Bayless – PK is stuck in third gear and Bayless in in fifth.) Don’t get me wrong – I like him, good size, smart, and he could possibly develop into a solid rotation guy – but his upside is limited.
Sergio might be a decent, flashy guy for some team down the road, in the Jason Williams mode. As a Blazer, though, he’s out.
Bayless is legit. In contrast to PK, he’s twice as quick (and strong) as anybody summer league guy trying to guard him. When he wants to drive, even two summer league guys trapping don’t have a prayer – he just splits them and makes it look easy. His playmaking skills haven’t come across yet because his teammates move so much slower than he does (and can’t knock it down when he does get them open looks), but it’ll be a different story when he’s surrounded by Roy, LA, Oden, etc. Hes got a chance to be a star. And the chances that he gets traded to make room for PK and/or Sergio (today, tomorrow, ever) are an absolute zero. He could learn to play lefthanded and be more of a contributor than those guys.

A couple of things.
Koponen took three hard dirrbles to his left and got to the rim last night.
In the Born article, he said PGs in the SL are playing tougher perimeter defense than ball-handlers will usually see, because they’re trying to impress NBA scouts. (How much 94’ feet “glove” defense do you really see from NBA point guards during regular season games?)

Bayless is NBA-ready...
................................ and with dreams of a free agency signing of Calderon, Paul, Williams, Harris, etc. down to zany fantasy status, it’s pretty clear that the Bayless Era has begun for the Blazers, for better or worse.
It will be very interesting to see how Roy and Rex interrelate. Toss Newbie Rudy in the mix and see if Oden can learn to keep himself in the game more than 25 minutes a night and it could be downright fascinating…
This will be a learning year, for sure, but one with a goal (and reasonable expectation) of MAKING THE PLAYOFFS.

will play 30 minutes. Book it.
