MeSoKrabby got me thinking about our guards...
I typically am content to enjoy the informed BE posts and very rarely post anything myself... but the warriors fan has me pondering the future of our guards. Assuming we sign Koponen to prevent him from signing a long term European deal, we will have six guards fighting for 96 minutes... this assumes Webster never swings into the backcourt.
Here is the list in order of minutes played (an educated guess): Roy, Blake, Fernandez, Bayless, Rodriguez, Koponen

Yep
Basically whoever doesn’t deserve to play, doesn’t.
I don’t think PK is better than Blake, maybe even Sergio at this point, so he’ll probably go to Boise. Maybe Batum and PK can become the best of buddies there, they can share a condo and throw parties and everything.

Only Petko (or Bayless) would be eligible for D league.
Rookies and sophmores only, so Sergio couldn’t go. I think the most likely thing is Petko will be signed and play in Boise, and Sergio will get spot minutes to see if he has improved. Then moves may be made mid season.

I never said Sergio would go to the D League
I said Batum and PK would.
Sergio will probably be our 12 or 13th man on the active roster.

Yeah
I guess I was thinking, it doesn’t make much sense to have both Segio and Petteri on the bench, so you might as well send one to Idaho. And since only Petteri can go, it would be him. Not disagreeing with you.

Ah that sentance is confusing
I meant to say I don’t think PK is better than either Sergio or Blake so he will probably be sent to the D league.

The only question is...
whether or not he decides to stay in the D league or go back and sign a multiyear deal in Europe. No way he makes more by staying another year. We will see if he is willing to wait for the chance to play in the NBA sooner rather than later when he is 22 or 23 years old.
I still think that he stays at least one more year here in the D-league with a chance to make the roster if Sergio is traded mid season or by the trade deadline.

PK was the 30th pick ...
meaning it’s actually in his best interest, if he thinks he’s NBA material, to play out his rookie contract for peanuts so he can get to earning real money in the NBA before he gets old. So even if he’s in the D-League, it’s an investment in his future earnings if he thinks he can be a contributing player in the NBA (which I think he would be wise to believe). Otherwise, he can make plenty of cash money in Europe … but it seems like he really wants to be an NBA player.

He can't do both
He can’t sign a contract with the Blazers, be sent to the D League and decide to back to Europe. Conversely, he can’t be sent to the D League unless he signs a contract with the Blazers which would prohibit him from going to Europe. An NBA team can’t send a player to the D League which it does not have under contract. Either he is offered a contract and stays, D League or not, or he does not sign and stays away.

Well
maybe he gets the chance to be added to the active roster, after Sergio is traded. Sergio leaving is his only chance to get on the active roster this season I dont think he’s gonna convince anyone after summer league no matter how well he performs.
by lethaldose on Jul 17, 2008 12:01 AM PDT 0 recs
Right
He plays in Idaho or sits a lot in Portland this year. Next year, he might earn more time. If he exceeds expectations, he could even move up to #2 on the depth chart at PG. If that happens, Sergio will be gone, either traded or simply waived.

wow.
I am the only person who think Petko will be traded. I thought the Suns wanted him? It’s not like they don’t have anyone we could use.

Give Sergio Some Credit
The guy has been on the team two years.
KP added players who could benefit from Sergio’s game.
Sergio was asked by the coach to improve aspects of his game to help him and the team.
Bayless is a 19 year old rookie who has only played two summer league games.
Koponen is also very raw with only two summer league games under his belt.
Sergio will start the season as the back up point guard. It is his job to lose or for Bayless or Koponen to gain. I’m not saying he won’t be traded by the trade deadline. What I am saying is that Blazer’s Edge folks have an unhealthy fascination with rookies.

Yeah
Some people liked Roy and Aldridge a couple years ago. Look how that turned out.
Most of us have some kind of unhealthy fascination. In fact, we probably all do, or we wouldn’t be posting here in the middle of summer. I mean, how bizarre is that?
Of course, the south of Scotland (and central and northern, for that matter, in fact, the whole blooming island) doesn’t have much summer. So I, at least, have an excuse. You live in Hawaii.

Aldridge didn't start his rookie year
The vibe I get is that most people on Blazers Edge want multiple championships, but somehow stay in the lottery and get five new rookies each year, with three of them as starters.

YES!!!
That way we can always talk about having the most potential for the future, even while winning 47 straight championships.
We don’t have to get in the lottery. KP stockpiles second round picks, and we all know that anyone he picks is a sure star.
Look, if anyone on this team hasn’t won MVP by his 6th season, he’s history. We’ll already have drafted his replacement three times over, and we’ll give up and dump him for one of the young guys coming through.

It's true.
Why do we love Rookies so much? Is it because they are untainted by other teams? It seems like we hate every trade proposal ever involving someone who isn’t still in the draft.
Ben Gordon? Gross. I would rather draft a combo guard.
Monte Ellis? Vile. He is too much of a one dimensional scorer. I like Bayless.
Leandro Barabosa? Disgusting. Oden and Barbosa on the same team? That sounds like a couple of guys who would rape and pillage a village.
Devin Harris? Revolting. Not a great shooter. Drives too much. I like Bayless.
Baron Davis? Repulsive. He is 29! Way too old to fit into our window.
Josh Childress? Awful. Doesn’t have a very high ceiling. Sure he shoots 57%, but not from the 3 point line.

Tom, I've always thought you were a funny guy, but this is too much...
Sergio will start the season as the back up point guard. It is his job to lose

................ You are right ONLY if Nate makes some sort of symbolic "I don't start freshman" statement in the first 3 games...
.................................................. just to make the natural born killer Rex work harder.
Sergio is down the road for this team. Not a player down the road—literally down the road.

I agree and disagree.
The back-up PG job is Sergio’s to lose. However, I don’t think he will start the season there. J-Bay will beat him out in training camp, and you can BOOK IT !!
If Sergio is the first PG off the bench on opening night, I will ban myself from Blazer’s Edge for 15 full minutes.

Exactly Tom.
It’s often said the PG position is the toughest to learn in the NBA, yet many think these two raw rookies can step right into the rotation.
I too think Sergio has a decent chance at being the #1 backup to Blake – even though Nate doesn’t seem to like him. That of course may be a difficult obstacle to overcome.

Heck Yeah
The way I see it, at the start of the season, is that if Roy and Blake start, then Rudy and Sergio are the first two guards off the bench. If Roy and Rudy start, then I don’t see Blake and Sergio being together in the second unit ,and Sergio’s days will be numbered. We already know that Outlaw compliments Sergio’s game and I’m pretty sure Rudy will too. The start of the season is the best opportunity Sergio will ever have to prove he deserves a roster spot on the team.
I have no doubt that Bayless is a better athlete and he will reach a point this season where his play will force Nate to find him some minutes. I’m just saying right now Sergio has the advantage over Bayless with two years of NBA experience and familiarity with everyone’s game in the second unit. Sergio needs to utilize that advance or get traded once Rudy is acclimated.

thats a good looking bulldog!
Somebody wrote me during the draft that a guy on a Knicks blog had dubbed Pritchard "The Hamburgler". In this case the appellation seems accurate. Robble-robble. - Dave
