KP, Bring Shane Battier to Portland!!
We need a small forward...
We need a veteran player...
We need playoff experience...
We need a player with good character...
We need someone to defend Koby in the playoffs!!
Kevin Pritchard, bring Shane Battier to Portland!
Unfortunately, he won't be a free agaent anytime soon, but there are other means of obtaining a player. Send Outlaw, send Webster, send future draft picks... send Paul's $$$.
What do you all think? Let's hear your comments.

I'd love Battier...
but I wouldn’t want to sacrifice anything more than EITHER Outlaw or Webster and a throw in for salary purposes. I checked it out on trade machine and a feasible deal could possibly be made, but it’d have to involve more players to make it work…

We’d have to give up some cap space in order to accomodate what the Rockets would want…and if we had to we could agree to a potential pick swap with Houston where they’d have the right to switch picks with us…but this is a deal I wouldn’t mind doing. B-Jackson would still give us cap space at years end, too!

I wouldn't do this deal
Where’s Bobby Jackson going to play? Behind Roy and Rudy? Behind Blake and Bayless? No way. He’ll be a locker room cancer in that role. He’s a guy who wants playing time, wants the rock and has to shoot it to be an effective player. He is among the elite who has scored 50 in a game. He’s not a distributor and I doubt we need another high volume shooter.

He said that Bobby jackson’s contract runs out at the end of the year, so I don’t think it would be as bad as you make it out to be. Still I don’t know if I do this deal.

I voted yes...
...but I have to say that I don’t think there’s really a chance at getting him. I’d imagine no one is higher on Battier than Houston. He seems like the gritty defensive player Houston covets like a better Chuck Hayes or Luis Scola (or recently Joey Dorsey). The fact that he has offense as a great spot up shooter makes him that much better.
Basically, I feel he’s the prototype we would want at SF. I just think he’s attainable.

Haven't we talked about this one already?
Like, 5 times?
I don’t think the Rockets are trading him.
For all the reasons you just listed. Also it’s really not worth it to trade our two small forwards for a guy that’s already 30, unless he’s going to hold up like Bruce Bowen, he’s too old for our championship window.
And Houston won’t do it for at least a year or two, they just drafted Donte Greene to take over for Shane. So yeah not happening.
Secondly, they already have a young project small forward they are grooming to take over in a few years. He’s not going to be expendable

I know I did it again
But I like that version of the sentence the best.
Also it’s subtle irony, you know how we’ve heard this trade proposal like 5 times, I’m repeating the same thing over and over again. See, I’m deep like that. It’s not that I just skimmed my post without really proof reading it. Not at all. Well kind of. But I decided to let it stay there for that ironical approach, wow I didn’t even know ironical was a word. I guess it is. That’s a clunky sounding word right there.

A young verson
of Battier would be absolutely perfect. What the B’s need is a 3 who is a lockdown defender, won’t demand too much salary, and can knock down the open 3. That is Battier to a T. Unfortunately, nobody’s going to confuse Martell or Outlaw for a solid defender, much less lockdown. I think KP and company are hoping Batum develops into that kind of player in a couple years.
But I agree with everyone else. The Rockets aren’t trading Battier. And he’s too old anyway.
by KP Corleone on Jul 16, 2008 8:02 PM PDT 0 recs
There were articles out towards the end of the season on Martell...
really working with Sarge to develop his defensive skill set. Here is the link to Quick’s article from early April discussing just that. Here
He definitely has the physical tools to develop into a solid stopper at either the 2 or the 3, it’s just a matter of dedication and from what I’ve heard, Webster lives in the gym. Here’s to fruition in 08/09.

its not going to happen
no matter how good you think batty-A is, he’s not going to replace either of our current SF’s. Its not going to happen.
I guess what gets me in an uproar is how willy-nilly these trade ideas are. The Portland Trail Blazers are not a fantasy team. You cant just think exchanging one guy for another is going to be a good move or a healthy move. Altho I personally have felt Web could go for the right price, it wouldnt be in that deal, as I’d prefer to continue to groom Web and hope he really can find his niche on the team.
To even suggest we need some lock-down defender on that guy bothers me. If he hasnt already demonstrated ball-hoggery wont win in a team game. I aint worried about that guy. Im just happy to see our team grow.

you rec'd that?
cmon. Fantasy teams do not matter. Paul Allen has tried different strategies to maximize the franchise into a contender, unfortunately under Sideshow Bob the results were calamatous. I think thats really unfair and disrespectful of the job KP has done with PA’s generous leeway to label him a fantasy player. KP deserves better. He is not assembling a fantasy team regardless of the considerable talent he has achieved in accumulating. A team with 5 all-stars starting, like your fantasy yahoo teams, wont win it all. There are only so many shots, rebounds and assists for so many guys which is why great teams have great role players. Yea the PTB are deep and as they stay together they get better and more experienced. KP has intelligently assembled an unbelievable core set of character guys all dedicated to winning. Fanstasy

Precisely
They are building the team EVERY fan dreams of having, the team that will dominate for years and years. It’s the real Dream Team, because they aren’t just a collection of stars (though there are lots of potential stars), they FIT together.
It is a fantasy team. Ask how many fans are jealous and wish they had this team to watch.

Im guessing thats to me out of thread
in case you didnt get my point what bugs me is just another “hey how about we trade this guy for that for this reason” post that somehow is supposed to assume would vault the PTB to the next level, when its been demonstrated season over that teams typically need time to play together to become really good and making trades for trades sake despite the rationality behind it actually to me hinders progress.
Look the NBA’s favorite sons- the celtics and the l*kers were each besmirchingly gifted in trades key players that were difference makers. Portland is not going to be as fortunate, no matter how wily KP is.
There is an old boys club still in place in the NBA and the PTB still havent earned their respect, if not their attention.
Its all good. Post your trade scenarios and rationalize their value. If anything happens that isnt a blockbuster, I’d be shocked, and I dont see a blockbuster deal out their unless it involved maybe one or two players, no take it back, no blockbusters. We are set.

Grabbing Battier is a move a title contender might make
if they felt that move would put them over the top. The L*kers, for example, could use Battier. Actually, they could REALLY use him. Their marshmellow center is not as tasty as you might think and I can’t pronounce Radmanovic or Vujacic (and Pau should just add an ‘L’ to his name).
No, wait, I changed my mind. I had some great Finals shadenfreuden watching those two ‘play basketball’.
So, what I’m saying is giving up guys for the 1 or 2 year window when Battier will still be a difference maker is only worth it if we could make a deep playoff run.
The street lights is on.

What's the Rush?
KP has the luxury now of letting the action come to him. He’s spent the last few years completely retooling, and now has a pretty good set of players on the 1st and 2nd teams, and some chits on the third squad as well. This year, we’ll finally have the players from both last year and this years draft. The start of the make-over involved Aldridge and Roy. This year we add Oden, Bayless and Fernandez. These players will change the way we play. It will change both our offensive and defensive sets. We now have a permanent center rotation, and that let’s Aldridge focus on his best position – PF. Outlaw and Webster will own the SF spot, enabling Outlaw to focus on his best position. He will, for example, have more mismatches to exploit. The guards will take 40 games or so, as KP said, to begin to sort themselves out. With greater inside presence, we will attack the basket more, which both Rudy and Bayless can do. At the same time, both Fernandez and Bayless had pretty good 3 pt statistics, and we can expect those shots to fall as they get comfortable. Further, we have three players, Frye, Outlaw and Webster that can give us credible minutes at two spots. This provides injury insurance. As the players put in time in this system, some of their strengths will be enhanced and their weaknesses muted. Webster, for example, may not show as well in the system we had last year, but he may show better in the one we will put in place next year.
We can always add players. As this year has shown, we’ve seen front line and second team players changing hands. Some (Brand, Magette, Davis) became free agents and changed teams, others were restricted free agents, and changed teams because the team they left didn’t want to match their offers due to cap space and luxury tax problems (Posey, Turiaf, Jones, possibly Josh Howard, etc), and still others, like Camby, were simply let go because of luxury taxes/cap space, for little or nothing. None of these required “trades”. Only money. After that, we can look at trades.
What’s the rush? Until we integrate our last two years drafts, we don’t even know what we need, or if we need it. The SF we need in the new system, by definition, needs a different skill set than the one we needed last year. Let the twin tower era begin. Then, and only then, will we know what to do.

Patience (hear the whistling from Axl Rose?)
+1
Allow Aldridge and Oden to get comfortable, and lets see how Rudy & Bayless can get up to speed and into the rotation for both sides of the ball. Allow Outlaw and Webster to prove it and improve it on last years performance.
Once Oden is comfortable with his health and energy in the pros, which won’t be until 2009-2010 season, for Oden to have at least one full season under his belt. Shane Battier is 29 years old now, and will be over 30 come 2009-2010 season. Will Battier’s skills be diminishing? Will Battier’s skill-set still fit the needs of the Blazers? How will Battier’s health be? How will Battier’s money fit into our equation?
Those are a bunch of unanswered questions. But here is one with an answer… Is our team one piece away right now? No, there is no way to tell so why should KP move Webster, Outlaw, Draft picks and Mr. Allen’s $$$ to do something that there is no way to tell if it is the right move now.
Stay put, and stay patient Portland.
