James Posey to Hornets
Here's the link. 4 years for $25 million. Really nice get for them. 4 years is a little tough to swallow but he is a great fit for that team. Kobe Stoppah.
Your move, Kevin Pritchard. Your move.

Outlaw is better than Posey. But beating out Webster would be close.

Thats a big signing for the hornets, Posey is one of those guys that doesn’t do a whole lot stat-wise, but when he is in the game, his team simply plays better. Its no coincidence that he has hit several big shots on teams that ended up on champions, he can play when it counts…

7.4 Pts, 4.4 Rebs gets you $6.2 millions a year for 4 years
Hornets over payed for a 31 year-old soon to be 32. Boston’s team defense helped him out here. People will say he’s skills don’t show up in the boxscore, but he’s not worth this much money. Hornets are gambling next year is their year, they have no money to spend in the next 3 years. George Shinn will not go over the luxury tax line.

age is an issue
Probably a team paying for a what a player did, not what they will do.
Only the “hometown” team should retroactively reward a player (especially if they were on a crap contract). On the FA market, teams should only consider what they think a player WILL do.

This hurts a bit
I know he’s old, I know he averages 7.4 pts a game and only rebounds a small clip, but his defensive presence is great, and he’ll certainly help out the Hornets.

He will help the Hornets
But 4 years is a long contract for a guy his age and yea life in the West just got a little a little harder
by southern oregon on Jul 16, 2008 1:27 PM PDT 0 recs
In 3 years he will be the $6 mil. JPEC
So a nice addition for the Hornets. Remember, he backs up Peja who is much more dangerous offensively. Then they can bring him in if a) Peja has an off-game or b) they need to stop someone from scoring.

At least the L*kers didn't get him
I really like James Posey, and his value goes so much deeper than the stat sheet. I’m a sucker for guys like that. Bottom line, the C’s had no chance in Hades of winning the NBA Championship without him. Great for the Hornets. I just wish they were back in the East, because they’re a very likeable team and I would enjoy being able to root for them without having to worry about how they are affecting the Blazer’s playoff chances/positioning. If the Hornets stay healthy next year they just jumped to #1 overall in my projected playoff seedings.

Posey is the new Horry...
Bouncing from team to team to put himself in a position to win a championship.
7.4 points and 4.4 rebounds may not warrant a “WOW” out of the average fan, but Posey is a nice complimentary player and he gives the Hornets someone to throw at Manu Ginobili, Kobe Bryant and possibly Lebron James (if both teams make it to the Finals).
He was a very solid man-on-man defender for the Miami Heat, so you can’t attribute 100% of his defensive reputation to the team defense mantra of the Boston Celtics, and he can spread the floor. More than anything, he’s insurance if Peja decides to take a couple months off with back spasms during the regular season…
I think this is another solid acquisition for the Hornets. He might struggle in the later years of that contract, but he’s the perfect player if you’re in “Win Now Mode.”

posey
Its not an accident that the players wanted posey back in a big way.this will give a young hornets team some very needed experience.
by 9ballkid on Jul 16, 2008 2:48 PM PDT 0 recs
That's what a championship will get you
Say Boston had lost to Cleveland or Detroit. You think Posey would have gotten a big contract? I’m not saying Posey isn’t a decent role player, but it’s amazing to see someone rewarded for team success in this way. 4 years and $25 million for a 31-year old guy who plays some defense and hits a few open shots. Is Boston no longer the favorite for the championship after this signing? Have the Hornets’ chances significantly improved? I’m not so sure about that.
I wonder what Udoka would have gotten if the Blazers had won a championship.
by Harry Manback on Jul 16, 2008 2:52 PM PDT 0 recs
That's what 2 championships in three years gets you
This comment is silly on so many levels, but this last line about Udoka getting paid if the Blazers had won a championship is off the charts.

Even if he is overpaid, that’s how the NBA works, espeicially when a player has Posey’s reputation.

Posey is a fine player, but...
Look…I’m not saying Posey isn’t a decent pick-up. Just significantly overpriced. Guys like Posey are role players. They contribute to championship teams because they can be on the team without demanding shots or, importantly, money that can be reserved for better players. They allow you to build a team around, say, Shaq and Wade or Garnett, Pierce and Allen. You pay them an amount like $6 million a year and you’re not getting that part of the value.
The Hornets are pretty well locked into their lineup so maybe the lack of flexibility that a $6 million backup introduces doesn’t make any difference. But in a couple of years when they haven’t gotten over the hump and have a 34-year old slower Posey with less defensive prowess and a contract nobody wants, I imagine they’ll have other thoughts about this signing.

It's not a great contract
but he fills the biggest gap on that team perfectly. They needed a wing defender who could hit open shots and bang for rebounds in a bad way. Given their wing rotation consisted of a gimpy Peja, a rapidly deteriorating Mo Pete, and the small for a point guard much less a wing Jennero Pargo, I think this strengthens an already strong team.
Also, I swear Posey is getting better year by year as he settles into a very defined model as a role player, accepting his limitations and focusing on his strengths. I think he’s even better defensively now than he was in Miami’s title year.
Bowen’s what, 38 now? Posey keeps on doing what he’s doing and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him earning his check 3 or 4 years from now.

The Hornets needed some more depth and experience
This is a solid pickup for them. I don’t think the lenth or dollar value of the contract will be an issue. The hornets didn’t have money to spend for a bigger pickup and won’t for a couple years, so who else were they going to get? He won’t be like Horry was this year, so even if he falls off a bit, the defense still has to respect his shot which will give Paul enough room to operate.
The street lights is on.

Drat.
Looks like KP’s wheeling and dealing helped make this possible…
Shortly before the draft, the Hornets traded away their only draft choice, the 27th overall pick, to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for $3 million in cash with the stated purpose of using that money toward a proven player in free agency who could help them win right away. With the money they received from Portland, combined with the savings that came from not having to shell out guaranteed money to a first-round draft pick, the Hornets were able to offer a generous enough deal to bring Posey to New Orleans.
by shralpster on Jul 16, 2008 4:11 PM PDT 0 recs
Good
We helped the Hornets into “win now” mentality. They have a window of about the next 2 years, maybe 3, to contend. Posey fits that window. But in 3 years, we’ll be dominating, and they will be tied up with Posey’s contract, Peja will be getting old, etc.
Maybe they win it all this year, maybe next year too. Good for them. Maybe in 3 years, we’ll have a real battle with them in the WCF, and an old Posey will help them. Fun stuff. But then it is going to be championships for us rolling on, and on, and on.

Shozbot!
I hope he isn’t their ‘missing piece’.
Brings a tough guy presence, great perimeter D, hits the open 3 and does all the intangibles without requiring touches to stay happy.
Every team needs a guy like that.
Change the divisions up, go east young man.
That is one school of thought.
Won’t it be that much sweeter when the PTB are champs and have to come out of one of the most stacked conferences of all time? You get better by playing against better competition.
