Bayless' Shoes & Sergio

First time poster here. I've been a reader for a while but now with all the time on my hands with summer around, I cant keep my thoughts grounded. Hope I don't break too many rules with this first post. And don't mind the name...just representing the best player in the L. Don't worry, the Blazers are still the TEAM. Roy, Oden, Aldridge, and all of our potential is just sick. The rest of the L has to watch out. Heres just my two cents on summer league and Sergio, starting with Bayless' shoes.

Bayless' Shoes

Has anyone else noticed that Bayless' shoes seem to big for his feet? I've watched him the past two summer league games and I can tell that he is an athletic freak with mad hops and great quickness. But, watching him run and move laterally, something seems to be off. I've played some ball myself and I personally know that wearing certain shoes can affect the way you run on the court. For Bayless, it seems that his shoes are too big making his movements a little bit awkward, slow and even a little stiff at times. Heres a couple pictures:

2674975234_629d2644bd_medium

2674208147_933938e1a1_medium

Maybe its just the look of the shoes that make them look big, with the big white strip right through the middle of the shoe. Personally, I never liked the way the split colors on basketball shoes looked but thats beside the point. Compare Jason Thompson's shoes in the second picture to Bayless'. I don't know too much about Thompson but I know he's a good couple inches taller than Bayless for sure. Looking at the picture it seems as if they have nearly the same foot size. But then again, it could be the angle and relative frame of reference...

I ran this picture down just now. He looks a little bit more athletic and more fluid in this picture than from what I've seen. Here it is:

07_bayless2_medium

(via www.nike.com)

So here's my consensus. I think for basketball players Jerryd's size and type of athleticism, wearing thicker soled shoes often makes the player look less athletic and less quicker off the dribble. I feel like Bayless should be getting defenders off of himself with quicker crossovers and getting to the rim untouched. I might be expecting too much of him but I feel like he could be quicker, but he's still mad quick. Maybe thinner soled shoes would fit him better? Maybe his shoes are too heavy making his running seem labored and very tiring. I've also noticed that he often is seen huffing and puffing after going down the court a couple times. Conditioning perhaps?

Overall, I really like this kid. I envision him as a Devin Harris type of player. Quick off the dribble with a solid jumpshot and can attack the basket. I don't really agree with the comparisons to Jack although they do bring similar intensities. For his first couple years though I can actually see more of a Jannero Pargo resemblance. A energy scorer off the bench who can shoot and score in bunches. Pargo was a great bench asset for the Hornets this year and if we can get the same type of energy and scoring then we'll be in good shape.

Sergio

There's been a lot of criticism of Sergio lately. I feel that this is a little bit unmerited and with the play of Koponen, Sergio has unfortunately become the scapegoat of this organization. Let me just say this. Koponen if he were signed would be the 4th guard on this team. That would be a logjam at point guard and with Brandon taking up some of the playing time at that spot too, it just clogs up the rotation. Overall, I think Koponen is still very raw. He doesn't seem to like going to his left and his handles are subpar compared to Bayless. I much prefer in the two games, having Bayless with the ball in his hands rather than Koponen. He just seems to frail.

Also, it was only two or three years ago that Sergio was hailed as our future point guard. I think its still too early too tell whether he will pan out or not. I think he has great court vision and I like his passing. Running with Rudy I think will free him up a little bit and make him able to relax which I feel he hasn't really learned to do. I will say that Kop does have a better shot, but Sergio does seem like a pass first point guard and he doesn't really mind if he doesn't shoot the ball (or it might be that he just plain cant  shoot that makes him reluctant).

Anyway, just leave your thoughts and comments and can't wait for tomorrow already. Summer is such a tragic period for basketball fans. Im so itchy for the season to start.

Hey, what happened to your cowboy avatar?

Sure, Sabas is cool and fits your handle, but I kinda was used to the other one.

Like cats, I fear change.

My old avatar was Sabonis in a tropical hat.....heh...cowboy?

I was going to change it to this:

Hey, I thought it was a cowboy hat also

A cowboy hat counts as tropical to Sabonis anyways. Everything is tropical when seen through the drunken haze of a 7’5” legend who grew up behind the Iron Curtain and only discovered Wendy’s 99 cent Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers much too late in life… could things have been different? We’ll never know.

A DUI ticket would be a nice avatar for a Sabonis themed name, or a Vodka bottle.

Sabonis is so awesome.

Actually Sabas was a big fan of Japanese Food

I met him twice at Benihana’s in Beaverton. The first time I was like 12, that man is truly gigantic. I have the picture somewhere.

Good first post Mr. cp3

Pictures and everything—bravo. Interesting topic. Interesting, but I’d have to lean towards shoes not being too big for him. When I was in high school, I tried on like 10 different pairs of shoes before picking the ones I wanted for basketball season. At least 10 pairs. If not more. I’m sure he’s tried on hundreds of shoes….heck…maybe even got some custom made for him by Nike.

Big feet yes.

But I was more worried about how small his hands look. They look like a kids hands on the ball. Never good for a person that you want to be a ball handler.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

by OCBlazerFan1 on Jul 16, 2008 9:53 PM PDT   0 recs

Haha

I thought the same thing, like he’s using his forearm to help hold the ball.

but small hands can have greater fine motor control

Unless Jerryd has a history of turning the ball over or making less-than-crisp passes, I don’t see how you could count small hands as a liability. Guys with big hands often are awkward and clumsy and tend to fumble the ball out of bounds a lot. Like Pryz. Ya can’t tell unless you look at other factors. As I see it Mr. Bayless is a tightly disciplined young man, with excellent athleticism and quickness, good shot mechanics, range, and a great work ethic.

Winning is everything.

Interesting point...

Jermaine Kersey couldn’t palm the ball. Whenever he dunked he had to tuck it.

I was thinking of

guys like John Stockton, Rod Strickland, and Clyde Drexler. Big handed guys that could control the ball well. I agree, Pryz is NOT what I’d call a “ball handler” !!!! :-)

maybe its that they were adidas

Now its probably cuz im extremely biased, as my other passion aside from the blazers are nikes, I think maybe its that he is no longer wearing nike shoes that is make him not as fluid. I mean think about it, broy-nike, the king-nike, GO-nike, i see a pattern. Also as a first hand spectator at the last summer league game i was a few yards from Bayless and his shoes looked to fit normally from there.

The man is 6-4

My friend played basketball for Franklin high school and was 6-4. His feet were pretty big. I mean this guy isn’t small.

You aren't talking about Bayless are you?

....................... That would make Petko 6’7”...

Add a couple more inches to Bayless and we’ll have Petko getting his nose stuck in the twine flatfooted.

Visual proof that Petko is THREE INCHES TALLER than Rex on Mike Barrett’s site…

Hmmm, let’s see if I can rip the graphic…

But it is helpful in tricking GMs and newspaper reporters into thinking you're 3" taller than you are...

6'7" and 6'4" -- or 6'8" and 6'5"... You decide!

BAYLESS IS 6’1”.

"He shoots....................... he scores!!!"

by timbo on Jul 16, 2008 10:58 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I think you've underestimated...

You have presented photographic proof which clearly shows the top of Rex’s head reaching the bottom of the backboard. That makes him an easy 9’-6”.

Probably 9’-8” in shoes.

by lukeyhere on Jul 17, 2008 7:55 AM PDT to parent up   1 recs

I mean, really, I'm 6'4"...

.................................. when I’m feeling pretty and wearing my 4” spiked heels, it doesn’t mean I’m 6’8”. But it apparently does in the goofy world of GMs and Oregonian headline writers… But for some reason this supermarket isn’t selling its cornflakes by net weight of the contents but by the size of the box….

"He shoots....................... he scores!!!"

by timbo on Jul 17, 2008 7:58 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Tall tale of the tape

How does hair figure into this…he’s only 6’-6” but he’s a full 7 footer in afro.

His wingspan is 6’-10”........7’-2” in mittens.

He weighs a scant 145 lbs, but with his cousin also standing on the scale, he’s a healthy 265.

by lukeyhere on Jul 17, 2008 8:39 AM PDT to parent up   1 recs

I might accept 6'2" if Petko is 6'5"...

................................... recent KP interview indicates that Petko has grown to 6’4.75” and Bayless measured at 6’1.75” at the combine.

So if we can agree on the numbers 6’2” and 6’5”, I think we can resolve this dispute without taking it to Judge Judy…

There is a 3” visual differential; the rhetoric has been 6’3” and 6’4”, which is obviously wrong.

I'm pretty sure

that things such as proper shoes which
1. don’t hinder their play and
2. cushion their bodies from injury-causing stresses
ranks as a pretty high priority for these guys. It seems unlikely the Blazers (or the U of A, for that matter) would overlook something like that and rely on bloggers to help them out. Just saying.

But a very well-written fanpost. I just don’t buy the premise.

Bayless got an endorsement deal with Adidas

The shoes come from Adidas since he signed an endorsement deal with them.

Just because they come from Adidas

doesn’t mean that his team doesn’t take an interest in making sure Adidas is providing the right shoes for his game.

well...

Wouldn’t Adidas want him to be successful since they are paying him big bucks to do so. Maybe his feet are just unusually large. I doubt his shoes are too big, Blazers organization would be all over that. Or maybe it is a conspiracy so next season Bayless puts on the right size shoes and starts beasting like starbury in 01.

Ok so now Bayless has

1. Short arms
2. Big feet
3. Small hands

Which body part are we going to analyze next? I think I heard he has small ears. That might affect his ability to hear his teammates on the floor. On the other hand, he has really big kneecaps, which could come in handy if things get rough.

Hasn’t he already been getting past his defender and to the rim whenever he wants? And as far as being tired, he is playing around 35 minutes a game as the featured player.

Sergio

He’s a bit of a conundrum, but he’s no scapegoat. First off, he’s not taking any blame for something someone else has done, and secondly, the general concensus is actually rather accurate… he had a bad year.

Let’s face it, from what we’ve seen, he’s nothing more than an NBA scrub right now.

That’s not to say that he can’t make it… I really hope to see him come in this year with a massive chip on his shoulder where his play forces Nate to play him more. I would be thrilled to have him end up playing like many of us hoped he could.

If he can be more confident on the court, if he can build an arc into his shot, and if he can defend at least average… mixed with some of that natural je ne sais quoi, he could be really good.

I think he has to show serious development this year to stay in this organization, or he’ll simply be pushed out by the other talent we have.

Just BEdge it.

Sergio

I agree with the above poster. After all, Roy and Blake were ahead of him last year, and now we’ve added Bayless and Fernandez. PetKo is one more option as well. It’s the NBA. The Blazers are moving on. Whatever Mac and KP saw last year, they put a full court press on to get Bayless and Fernandez – which says a lot. It doesn’t make him a bad guy – he’s just had a couple of years in the league, and he didn’t have a good year. At the wrong time.

by Eben Calder on Jul 17, 2008 12:55 PM PDT   0 recs

Exactly

It’s not blog posters that have made Sergio a “scapegoat” He simply hasn’t won regular minutes by impressing Nate McMillian. The reasons for this are readily apparant to a casual observer. He doesn’t defend well, individually or in a team concept. He can penetrate and kick but struggles to finish unless he has an open layup. His jumper is flat and his shooting percentage is low.

The big question for me is…why was Sergio never sent to the D-League? Was it for fear that he would share his disconent when text reporting to Rudy? Well, now that Rudy is signed I don’t think it matters what is done with Sergio. If another NBA GM wants to take a flier on him, KP shouldn’t hesitate to deal him for a 2nd round draft choice

I got my first pair of comfy shoes, ever, just the other week

I got really wide feet, size 12 or 13 depending on the brand, and it’s been a lifelong HELL finding shoes that adequately fit my feet (more for the width, since there are plenty of size 12-13 shoes out there.)

Now that I finally got shoes wide enough, and comfy, it’s made a world of difference in my feet-comfiness stats.

I agree with Jscot that I doubt he’d be wearing shoes that don’t fit him perfectly and weren’t specifically made for his size of feet, but you never know—sillier things have gone on without being noticed by those who should know, and perhaps he is wearing shoes that don’t fit him. He’s super damn quick already with his big shoes though; is he getting faster with proper footware?

He’s got big feet, I don’t see a problem with it. He jumps very high and runs very fast up n’ down and left n’ right. Can’t ask for more in regards to those skills…

My fiancee has super wide feet as well. Our kids are doomed. Her feet are like half as long as mine but just about as wide, so she has lil’ square shaped feet while mine are the more attractive duck-shaped feet. We will have to hire someone to handmake super wide shoes for the entire family, once we squirt some out, because I could never find ones that fit good enough.

I always did well in athletics even with my shoe problem, but how far could I have gone with proper shoes? I think it’s safe to say I’d be on the otherside of of the fan/player equation and likely would be either a baseball or NBA allstar. I mean, I was like THIS CLOSE from getting there as is, so the shoes musta’ been the problem.

DAMN SHOES! Bayless don’t follow my path of doom! Get a comfy snug fit with good padding!

On this, all depends!
