The unofficial BE Tour De France post

I am finally caught up on the Tour stages as today was a rest day and now I can ask if any other BE'ers are watching the tour.

Let me give you my unexpert opinion.

Cunego is riding like a total chump. He skipped the Giro to focus on the tour and he looks even worse than the years he did the Giro and the tour. He is going to have some serious explaining to team management why he is putting on such a suckfest in the race that is supposedly his season goal.

Valverde: I have always like this dude, but I have doubted his ability to win grand tours. Even though he was touted as a pre race favorite he is showing why he is a great one day racer and not so hot in the stage races.

Denis Menchov: Yawn...call me when he is not just following a wheel.

Cadel Evans: my favorite to win the race. He had a bad crash two days ago but hung onto finish the stage and captured the yellow in yesterdays stage. Awesome gutsy riding so far.

Frank Schleck. We have been waiting on you for a few years Schleck. Good to see you are finally putting together to be a contender.

Riccardo Ricco: Does not understand team strategy and even attacked when his own teammates (that is right teammates plural not singular) were up the road. You were a DB in the Giro and you are a DB now, but I like your attacks in the mountains.

Christian Van de Velde: Where did you come from. In the mid 90s you were a track rider who could barely hang on. Way to go.

Kim Kirchen: you held onto yellow more than anyone expected. Awesome

Those are my thoughts for now. Hopefully people will jump in and tell me what an idiot I am. Just like when I post about basketball.

If you like this rec it so it can stay up till the Tour finishes.  Honestly, summer league is not that exciting.

Vive le Tour!

I have watched every single stage of the Tour so far, so the rest day was nice because I got to focus solely on the Blazers today.

At this point, I think the favorites should be narrowed down to Cadel Evans, Alejandro Valverde, Christian Vandevelde, and Kim Kirchen (not necessarily in that order).

Evans is clearly the strongest rider in the race, and should do a lot of damage in stage 20 (53km individual time trial), if he’s still hanging around after the Alps. Unfortunately, he has total crap for a team around him. I have no idea how he ended up on Silence-Lotto, but all I can surmise is that they threw the bank at him, he chased the money, and they had nothing left to get decent riders to support him. If he wins, it really will be an individual accomplishment, and I don’t think he can do it. He’s done a good job of letting the other top guys’ teams pull him along, but sooner or later they’ll cut him off.

Valverde has been underwhelming so far, but at least he’s not kneeling down and keeling over like Cunego. His strength lies in that he’s pretty good at just about everything, even though he’s not spectacular at anything. Additionally, Caisse d’Epargne is one of the strongest teams in the Tour, and if they help him right and plan well, that could get him the maillot jaune. Unfortunately, with his recent string of lackluster performances, it seems as if his teammates may not be completely behind him. That’ll be an interesting dynamic.

Kim Kirchen is a similar rider to Valverde, in that he’s good at a lot, but not an expert in anything, although Valverde is a better climber, and Kirchen is a good sprinter. Again Kirchen’s strength lies in Team Columbia, which looks like it’s been spectacularly assembled and directed. Their in-stage tactics have been great, and they’ve managed to get good results from the whole roster, top to bottom.

I think Vandevelde is kind of a dark horse, but if he can hang around, could make some noise. Although he’s not a spectacular individual climber, Garmin-Chipotle as a team are solid, with some serious climbers to help Vandevelde. If he’s still in good position near the end of the tour, that long time trial will make or break him. If he wants a shot, he’s probably got to have a solid cushion over Evans by then.

I still don’t know what to make of Franck Schleck. Dude has been over- and underachieving (depending on who you listen to) and hyped for several years now, and I’m just not ready yet to trust him as a serious contender. I want to, would love to see him rewarded with a maillot jaune, but can’t believe yet.

I love July, because of summer league and the Tour! I’m not getting any work done this week, and that’s a promise.

anyway… i like cavendesh… i think he’s had some good days and he’s got a solid team… he’s my dark horse…

I thnk it is Cadel's to lose

honestly, he was 2nd last year and does wear the #1 as well. I just think that TT on the next to the last day should be enough for him to wrap it up and put away the rest of the field.

I am looking at CSC to challenge them the most and have been waiting on Sastre to show some form and think that he is gonna have to hit these guys hard in stages 16 and 17 to have any shot of hanging on in the final TT. Schleck could be a dark horse and if he is on goodform we could have a repeat of Hinault/LeMond in 85, of course not as talented of them but the same situation.

It seems that Sastre may be able to come into form once they hit the Alps and he better hope so if he wants any chance at a podium.

BTW Cavendesh is a sprinter and has not shot as the GC and Evens has been on Lotto for the past 3 years. His main problam is the fact that the team is somewhat split between him and McEwen in going after the green jersey. They do have Popovytch who is decent but he was nowhere to be found on the Tourlamet or Hautacam.

I think Van de Velde may have a shot at the podium, ala Julich in 98. We are in one of those in-between periods where there are no clear cut favorites and he may just be able to slip on the podium. He has always had bad luck in the Tour it seems to me, and this is the first time he is THE GC rider and not a domestique. IT seems to me there are so many similarities between the 98 tour and this one and Van de Velde.

I think it will be
Evans
Sastre
Van de Velde

but we’ll see.

No love for Menchov, I see

but I think he’ll be on the podium.

It probably comes down to Evans and Sastre, though.

Talk to me when they get to the Alps.

It is far to early to be talking about a possible winner. No single rider has dominated the race yet and there are several guys in the hunt. If I had to pick, I’ll go with Spyder’s guys. Vandevelde has been impressive and I have to give points to Evans for his performance in Stage 10 after crashing the previous day.

So far I think the story is how good the two American sponsored teams are doing. I find it slightly ironic that Team Columbia (I love the Tour having a Portland connection) is the old T-Mobile / Deutche Telecom team that was the primary nemesis of Postal.

For the love of god

would all you goofy spandex sporting riders at least choose to ride somewhere there is a shoulder on the road. NO….. you just have to choose the narrow country roads with blind corners and sight restricting hills and dips. Sorry, but I live on what must the the Tour de Willamette Valley route and I’m constantly taking evasive action to avoid a rider in the middle of my lane.

by tweener on Jul 16, 2008 9:17 AM PDT   0 recs

Wow

that was not about the tor de france at all

I am also going to say that I will keep taking up as much lane as I need to feel safe.

Well said.

I want you to be safe too

Thats why I rant about my specific situation where there are certain locations (Mid Valley wine country) where it is impossible to have two cars and a biker meet safely. I have had cars swerve into my lane avoiding unexpected cyclists and i have had to lock the brakes up. It then leaves a bitterness with me when I get flipped off by the cyclist.

Usually I slow way down and give bikers a very wide berth and most of them will give a quick waive of thanks.

Just because a country road is scenic and fun to ride on doesn’t mean it’s a good idea for a bike route.

by tweener on Jul 16, 2008 10:10 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

And why to bikers want all the respect given to them that automobiles get, until they reach an intersection with a stop light or stop sign? Then they either run it or they go right, then do a U-turn, then go right again, back on their original path. If they want to be respected like a car, they should follow the laws governing both bicycles and automobiles.

I am going to get my respect

I talk on my cell phone every chance I get when I am riding. I also installed a glove box that I root around in while I am riding.

The intersection light problem is definitely concerning as I treat them like yield signs as getting up to speed is a much bigger concern for bikes than cars. I dont try and steal right of away and I dont get mad when a driver takes their right of way. I guess my thoughts are that the laws of the road reflect the needs of drivers and not of cyclists.

I don't mind cyclist at all

I think they are nuts, especially here in Hawaii because no one pays attention. A cyclist was killed the other day and he was stopped on the sidewalk. It’s just that I’ve known some militant cyclist who complain about the most trivial things cars do, then they break every law they can.

Bikes are very effective get-away vehicles for bank heists, now that you mention it...

let me first say

Thanks for giving cyclist a wide berth when passing. As someone who live in the mid willamette valley for 3 years, Kings Valley near Eola Hills winery, I definitely appreciate it.

It is pretty rude to have cyclists flip you off when it is the driver in their lane that is at fault for trying to pass them in an unsafe manner, but it seems that you are blame the wrong person in this scenario. If a driver unsafely passes another vehicle and almost hits an oncoming vehicle then it seems that unsafe passer and not the vehicle being passed is to blame.

Hopefully we can blame the proper party and maybe educate drivers in rural areas that they need to be aware of things that dont come up in the city such as wild animals and farm equipment. Also, cyclist need to learn how to take their lane when they are on a narrow road and not give fellow road users the idea that they can pass in a potentially unsafe situation.

I am always up early to watch the days stage. This is setting up to be an excellent finish. Evans is still the big favorite since he will likely take big time in the final TT but with his stuggles on the climb to Hautacam Schleck and the others could take enough time to hold him off in the final TT. The person who hasn’t been getting any attention this year is Bernard Kohl. I think he has a great chance to get on the podium and possibly challenge for yellow. I am loving Vande Velde this year. He is also a good in the TT so he has a great shot at the podium.

hells yeah

I get the british feed and is super cheeky, whatever that means.

In the bad old days I used to get a half hour of coverage on ESPN. Then super DB Lance Armstrong started winning and everyone loved it, now the coverage is getting worse since Lance isnt in anymore.

What channel?

I got super tv right now and I don’t think it’s in HD or on when I’m home.

I think they are

technically ride by shootings. Make sure you use a small caliber weapon or you might get knocked off your bike, and that would not be tuff.

Let me just throw this out there so it does not seem like we are biting the style of gangs.

Not into small calibers.

In fact, the hell with riding by.

Just set up on a roof about half a mile away with a lazer spotting scope. Type in the coordinates and zip them up to a circling aircraft and bing, one 2000 lbs JDAMS through the front door.
