Are we getting greedy? And is that bad? Deron?
We can argue that we don’t need an All Star quality PG. We can argue that Bayless our guy for the future. But if Deron Williams does not sign an extension this year we could really be in play. Williams in this article says that he would like to know that he is playing on a team with championship potential. Portland could have the money, playing along side the big three should be pretty luring, and he fits Portlands window perfectly. Plus what else do we have to loose? If it doesn’t look like it works with 4 huge stars on the same team we will still have 4 huge stars with big value to package in a trade that could work. I say Pritch doesn’t do anything with RLEC until he knows for sure what D-Will does. What do you think? Are we so positive that this won’t happen? How likely is this really? What stops this from happening? Do we want it to happen? Are we getting greedy? And is that bad?

We're not getting DWill
what stops in from happening is the Utah doesn’t let him get anywhere near free agency.
Boomshakalaka
If D-will wants out of Utah
he can’t force it until after year 5. He would have to play out his rookie contract for four years; accept the one-year “qualifying offer” at minimum wage, and then after year five he would be a UFA.
After his rookie contract his up, if he doesn’t take the qualifying offer, he’s a RFA, and Utah can and probably will match any offer.

I agree completely.
He’d have to hate Utah to get out…as in only take the qualifying offer. Utah’s not letting him go for nothing, and they’re not trading him unless he goes all Vince Carter…even then they won’t trade him to us. If he takes the qualifying offer, we’ll still never get him since our cap space is gone after the one year.
He’ll never be a Blazer.
Deron
We have 4-5 big money players ALREADY on the roster. I highly doubt that we try and sign another max contract.
What if he goes to Cleveland to play with LBJ? Scary…....or LA? If he leaves, it’ll be via sign and trade and I doubt Utah would want to trade him in the West, yet alone, to a division rival.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
I think it hinges on Boozer
but they wont know if Boozer is committed until the end of next year. If they could dump Kirkilenko then I imagine that would be enough to keep Boozer and thus keep DWill.
Maybe Utah could unload him on the Clips? Maybe?
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
He is good
but we cant fit a fourth max player in the same exact time as everyone else.

1080 got me think'n...
So glad you made a post about this. The guys on 1080 were talking about this before the SL game, and man did it get me thinking. Just who would we be okay with letting go??? I for one say all but the big three plus Joel (will not find a better solid back-up center in the league) and Rudy (because we don’t know if we hold the next best 6th man of the year award winner). Everyone else could be fair game. I mean really, if we package Trout then KP wouldn’t be so foolish to package Martell with him and vice versa.
For all you gamers out there, do me a favor and add into Portland’s line-up Deron Freak’n Williams as our point gaurd!!! What is their overall rating then?
I say do WHATEVER possible to get him here, IF he’s not signed with Utah soon.
Does this mean I have to like Diogu now???
I think you are contradicting yourself
wouldn’t doing whatever it takes include dealing one of the big 3, Joel or Rudy? That’s 5 guys you wouldn’t trade away for the 2nd best young and top 5 PG in the league. Without thinking about salaries, I would say it takes Aldridge, Outlaw, Bayless and some others plus a pick or two.
The street lights is on.
That's too generous
I’d bet that after this season, they’d consider LMA and somebody, if Boozer leaves.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
I’d say it is less than 50% likely that Deron leaves Utah anytime soon… that being said, he hasn’t signed his extension yet, he says he wants more assurance that he’ll be with a winner, and the team says he wants an opt-out clause. Reading the tea leaves, it is impossible to proclaim – “he’s staying – done deal – book it” – not yet, anyway.
I do think the Blazers may be targeting someone between now and next summer, but I can’t see how it’s DW… seems to be it would either be someone with a challenging contract, or someone who could bolt next summer. DW doesn’t fit either of those conditions (I don’t think).

This could happen
in a sign and trade next year, if he threatens to play out his qualifying offer and become UFA.
It would cost a lot, but we have a lot to offer. If Bayless is able to look like a potential all-star this year, he could be the key part of the deal. It would also cost us a very good forward (meaning Travis, Martell, or Channing IF they significantly raise their game) and another good player or draft pick.
They might not want to trade him inside their own division, but we probably will have more we can afford to offer than anyone else. With players like this, you are virtually always trading quality for quantity, and we’ve got quantity, in spades.
Whether this would be good is perhaps another matter. It partly depends on how our guys develop. If we’ve got a potential all-star or near all-star in Bayless (and I think we do), it hardly seems worth it to throw away our phenomenal depth, even for D-Will.

Your scenario makes no sense to me. Say the tables were turned and Brandon Roy threatened to bolt. First of all, that’s a pretty bold move since, if he follows through on that threat, he’s playing out the string at great risk of losing a fortune due to an injury (and remember, he hasn’t made big money yet). Second, and even more important from the team’s perspective, there is no way on earth that KP deals him to, say, Denver, or another division rival. Who in their right mind would want that hanging over their heads constantly?

I didn't say I think it is likely
but if he really wanted out of Utah badly enough, who knows?
He could probably buy insurance to cover himself in case of injury. He then becomes UFA, and makes huge money. I’m not saying I expect this, but if he doesn’t extend this summer, something is going on.
Major intra-division trades do happen. If Brandon was going to bolt, and KP could get the most talent for him from a division rival, it could happen.

Yeah, it could happen theoretically, but it still doesn’t make sense to me (but then again what do I know). That being said, I agree with your general level of suspicion… I mean, he should have signed by now, right???
I can’t think of an intra-division trade of this magnitude, especially for a younger player getting close to their prime, and awaiting their first huge contract. KG went from Minny to Boston. Gasol went from Memphis to LA. Shaq. Iverson. Ray Allen. (going back…) Moses Malone. Jabbar. Wilt. etc.

Of course
with Seattle moving, the division structure is now silly, and divisions could be realigned, putting us in a Pacific division and Utah in a Mountain West division or something.

Oh, and one more thought
I’m not sure intra-division trades are quite such a no-no anymore. You play all Western teams 3 times, and some of them 4 times, and you play your division rivals 4 times. So the difference between in-division and in-conference (and there have been lots of big in-conference trades) is 1 game some seasons, and other seasons no difference at all. And it just isn’t that big a deal whether you win your division or not if you’ve got one of the top four teams—and Portland and Utah both are going to be right up there for a while.
