Gameday Open Thread (Kings)
Gametime is 7PM Pacific tonight against our neighbors to the south. Mr. Ziller over at SacTown Royalty has a bunch of stuff up, including highlights from the Kings' first summer league game.
Check out who's on the front of the NBA's summer league site. And be sure to check out his play of the day from last night's game.
Some goodies to hold you over while you count down to the tip.
- Quick on Koponen
- Quick on Bayless
- Freeman's pregame notes
- HoopsWorld on Bayless
- Shameless Promotion: my quarterfinals bracketology preview for Ryan White's "Best Thing in the World" bracket. Vote now.
It's long been an NBA truism: the road to 82-0 begins with an undefeated summer league. Hopefully we keep the momentum going tonight.

I give up benefit of the doubt on this one
considering I spoiled the outcome on the delayed thread, which I completely over-looked.
I probly deserved it. Im sorry for ruining it for anyone, wasnt my intention.
It was weird watching the game and thread wondering why neither seemed in sync.

Shoots
I was going go over to SacTown and talk some smack like I was in the WWE with a lot of huffin’ and puffin’ and tell them that we were gonna lay the smack down on them, but I wasn’t sure where to put it. Listen up jabroni’s because Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson are going to foul out in 10 minutes from our guards attacking them like The Hardy Boyz against Edge and Christian in a ladder match. Do you smelllllll what the Monty is cookin’?

What to watch for in tonight's game
Bayless
He did a great job of using the high pick and roll. He was too quick for the bigs to jump out on and drew at least 3 or 4 fouls trying to turn the corner. When he was playing PG, he was definitely still looking for his shot. Couple of times no one on the team even touched the ball while he drove to the basket early in the shot clock. Look for more patience and playmaking as a PG. Sactown also has a better frontline rotation, Bayless may not get to the rim as easy so he may need to rely on his jumpshot more. Also on defense he is matched with Quincy Douby, a speedy combo guard, watch if Bayless can stay in front of him.
PetKo
Pick and rolls. Pick and rolls. Pick and rolls. Watch him play off the pick and roll and deliver some tasty passes. Also look for him to be more confident shooting over 6’0 Sean Singletary. He did a great job of keeping his body in front of Dee Brown, let’s see him do it again.
Batman
Anything he does today would probably be an improvement over yesterday’s debut. Hopefully his bruised ribs won’t affect him. Seems very raw on offense, but if Blazers push the tempo, I expect him to flourish in a up and down track meet. His fun to watch on the defensive end because that’s where he is more active.

I would say that
Blatche trumps at least SHawes on the defensive end. From the recap of the first Sacto game it sounds like Thompson is not much of a low post defender either.
Should be interesting watching Bayless blow by Douby all night long.

When in doubt, consult Homer
Homer provides two equally compelling arguments. One one hand he tells Bart, ””Son, a woman is like a beer. They smell good, they look good, you’d step over your own mother just to get one! But you can’t stop at one. You wanna drink another woman!”
On another occasion he remarks “mmmmm…. bacon”
Tough call.

Free Beer is GROSS!
Beer vs. Bacon – probably closer (though I still pick bacon, as there are more substitutes for beer than there are substitutes for bacon).
FREE BEER? It’s just not good, generally, unless you have really rich friends or attend fancy parties (which I don’t).
BAD BACON IS BETTER THAN MOST FREE BEER.

The four levels of beer:
1) Always cheap, but not worth even that.
Your most-free-beer-sucketh observation is the extreme form of this.
Examples of “Always cheap, but not worth even that”: Most top-selling corporate beers.
2) Sometimes cheap, sometimes not cheap; worth it only when cheap.
Funny, but beer that’s worth it only when cheap is occasionally expensive.
There’s no real examples of “Always cheap and worth it when cheap”, with the possible exception of PBR.
(In fact, PBR is the one beer that kinda misses these four categories; goodness knows it IS “always cheap.”)
Conversely, some stuff in Category 2 might be worth it when expensive, if only it were never cheap;
that is, the fact that they’re sometimes available cheap makes them hard to buy at more than $4.50 a pint.
Examples of “Sometimes cheap, sometimes not cheap; worth it only when cheap”:
Anything not in Category 1 that’s available at the Marathon Taverna on West Burnside & 18th.
Most Deschutes, Laurelwood and Bridgeport offerings are in this class, particularly the sub-class of
“Might be worth it expensive if it weren’t occasionally cheap.”
3) Always expensive, but never worth it.
These are beers that would be worth it if they were occasionally cheap.
In other words, beer that should be in Category 2, but has some weird undeserved reputation for being superior.
The prime example of “Always expensive, but never worth it”: Guinness. Also, Stella Artois.
4) Always expensive, always worth it.
This is why Oregon is the best: Tons of Category 4 beer.
Examples of “Always expensive, always worth it”: Anything and everything at the Horse Brass, on Belmont & 45th.
The entire portfolio of Rogue (except for Dead Guy Ale, which is thankfully Category 2 instead of 3),
Hair Of The Dog, Caldera, and Terminal Gravity breweries, plus pretty much all the winter beers in Oregon.
Blazers have a five-on-three...and they pull it back and wait for help.

PKo'
Looks big on my big screen, like a good sized pont guard. Seems to move his feet against the quick PG’s he was matched against last night. He is showing some signs that his defense won’t be a liability.
If he continues to show he can handle them, he will be invited back in October.
Sergio does not stay in front of anybody. Plus PK can make a LONG outside shot (or 3) in the clutch! Also saw a nice tear drop shot.
Let’s see more of the same tonight!

Actually
it was the “annoying” of the guys he was guarding last night that made me think of Ainge. Always on the move, making a pest of himself on defense. I love that.
Of course I have always been biased toward point guards (with some exceptions) so something like the gnat-like defense, the humor he showed when that loooong three went in unexpectedly, and his total cuteness, have made me into a staunch PeKo fan. I will even confess to saying, “good-bye Sergio” last night. He traded GO’s good friend, so I imagine trading Sergio is now on KP’s mind.

I mentioned in another thread that it wasn't his play that made me dislike
Ainge, it was his personality and his body language. When he whined he looked just like a very large rodent with all his features scrunched distressingly into the middle of his face, and he whined a lot. I was unable to look past what I considered his flaws to acknowledge his skills, most of the time. People’s tastes differ, I guess. The good news is we agree on Petteri. I thought he did very well in yesterdays game and I really, really want KP to keep him. Also, he’s a pretty cute kid.

If I may
I do see some similarities between the two, mainly in the brattiness/grit department. Ainge wasn’t as athletic or quite as quick as Bayless; Ainge might’ve been a better outside shooter: we’ll see. Certainly, Ainge was a very smart player who knew how to maximize his effectiveness on the court both physically and psychologically. It remains to be seen if Bayless has that dimension to his game.
Whatever—I do like the guy, T. rex arms and all.

First impression last year brought visions of Bobby Sura in my head (must be becasue he was playing off guard).
But now that you mention it (again), I think you’re on to something with the similarities to a Danny Boy. For sure on looks. A regular Richie Cunningham too. Ehhhhh!
