No Oden cameo at Summer League

Per Marc Stein guesting on TrueHoop:

Meanwhile ...

The Portland Trail Blazers play their first summer-league game Monday night against Washington, but Blazers front-office chief Kevin Pritchard has squelched any notion that Greg Oden might make a cameo in one or two of the Blazers' five games.

When we checked on Saturday night just to make sure, Pritchard said that Oden is far enough along in his recovery from September microfracture surgery on his right knee to return to the Cox Pavilion. That's the same building where we last saw Oden in uniform for two games last summer before he underwent a tonsillectomy, but the Blazers see no need or upside to hurry him back onto the floor.

And who can argue?

As much as we'd all enjoy a big-name cameo -- with this July's rookie contingent in Vegas lacking the buzz factor Oden and Kevin Durant generated in 2007 and now without Gordon it's not as if Oden needs a big summer to secure a spot in the Blazers' rotation. You can safely assume Oden is up there with Mayo on the list of favorites to win the 2008-09 NBA Rookie of the Year award, which Oden is eligible to win after sitting out his entire first season with the injury.

"We like him, Pritchard said with a smile.

Dheepan

Has this video been posted before? That is historic. Must at least fanshot this.

I would..

But no one reads the fanshots, so I’m sure it would get more attention here. I’ve never seen it either, but it was posted over a year ago on youtube.

I check 'em every day. That is great stuff, Dheepan. KP is CHARISMA personified.

I’ll bet he could gut the team and still come out smelling like a Rose Garden. Oh cheese. The guy is scary. I’ve been too long in the stupid corporate world. KP is better than that. Yes, KP is better than that.

I thought you were going to stop the self-commenting...

All joking aside, that’s some awesome footage, even if people aren’t looking at the fanshots that much, it should get its turn on there.

Looks like KP gets his shirts

At the same store Simon Cowell shops.

I remember this video from last summer, but I liked watching it again. Who doesn’t love KP? There’s a reason media, players, fans, and even enemies love KP, and it ain’t ‘cuz we’re all homers. He’s just awesome.

Oden has no reason to play summer league. If he does well, he’s ‘sposed to. If he doesn’t (and chances are, since no big men do well, he might not), it brings negative attention to something that really doesn’t matter. Aside from the fouls, I thought Oden was pretty impressive last summer and I ain’t worried.

Plus, this way it can be the Payless/Batooom/Herring Breath show! They can run and be free, instead of throwing the ball into the post all day. True, it’s what they’ll do in a real game, but I don’t mind letting them run around and build their confidence up against scrubs. They can learn how to throw the ball into the post a few minutes before the first game, or at halftime of that game. No hurry!

I remember it too

I think KP has shed some pounds since then. I wonder if he’s going to do a Slim Fast commercial.

You know I still love you. Hugs.

Does everyone know...

...that today’s game (Monday) is LIVE on NBATV?

Plus the Coincast channel if any of you actually have it.

You can watch it online, but on TV is always better of course. I set it to DVR, and the game is live at 5PM West Coast time, 8pm East coast. EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH AND STOP BEING JERKS ABOUT IT.

Game is on TV, how can you not watch?

I am sad I took the bus downtown today it will take an hour to get home

and Im hemoragging money every month to Coincast so I dont have DVR. Basically Im screwed out of the entire game…

Nuh uh uh!

It replays at 10pm, I believe, both on NBAtv and the Coincast Blazers channel.

If you’re getting ravaged economically by Coincast, I’m assuming you got the Blazers channel, and thus you can watch at 10pm (provided you are home).

How much is DVR for Coincast, monthly? It’s only like 6 bucks (maybe 5?) with DirecTV. CostCo was selling the DVR DirecTV boxes for 80 bucks last year, so no monthly rental charges for the DVR receiver either.

by Mortimer on Jul 14, 2008 2:12 PM PDT up reply actions

they charge monthly something astronomical like +20 bones after the "free" trial

yes I do subscribe 2 coincast. So I will have to stay up past my bed time and watch it @ 10! good lookin out

Upon further investigation

EVERY Summer League game of ours is on NBATV! Huzzah!

Each game is on live, as well, except for the Thursday game, which is on a tape delay at 11pm (2am East coast). Strange time for the tape delay to show, but who the hell am I to complain? Every game is on actual TV, I can’t nitpick like a jerk.

Here’s the schedule of Blazer games:
MON 5pm (against the Bullets)
TUES 7pm (against the Kings)
WED no game (against no one)
THURS 7pm (against T’Wolves), but not Live. Airs on NBATV at 11pm Pacific time
FRI no game (what’s even the point of following Summer League on days we don’t play?)
SAT 7pm (against the Suns). If you’re watching online, the feed starts at 7:30pm, a half hour late.
SUN 5pm (against the Hornies). Again, the online feed starts a half hour later, 5:30pm.

All games are LIVE on NBATV and the Blazers TV channel, except Thursday (maybe that one is live on the Blazer channel? I dunno, what do I look like, a TV Guide? Well, I don’t look like a TV Guide, pal).

the question is...

will they blackout the local games on NBATV? I’m pretty sure they did this last year – and the NBA even went as far as blacking out the online feeds too. What a way to build your fanbase David…

With any luck, they won’t repeat that mistake. But I’m not counting on it and I’ll get my black market internet feed ready to go just in case.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

I got DirecTV

Why they take away your NBATV? I had league pass and NBATV is still working… I hope I didn’t jinx anythang of course.

You gotta have one of those sports packages that have a billion channels I’d never watch for more than I’m willing to spend on channels I’d never watch to get NBATV without league pass, and I dunno any other way to get NBATV.

I’m sorry if they bein’ jerks…

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
