Good to hear what former refs are thinking
Though going back to the old ways is not the ideal solution either. Referees shouldn’t be too detached and autocratic, but they shouldn’t be this close either.
I really don’t mind a ref explaining a decision he made to a player or a coach on the field. And true that some players are allowed more than others (KG directly going head to head with some in the playoffs). But refs should not accept phone calls or invitations from players, coaches, GMs, much less accepting or seeking merchandise. And only refs and their independent governing body should judge the performance of other refs and assign them to games, like it is done in a lot of other sports.
Coach, I promise I wasn't running hard ...

funny that this vids no longer available
"I was playing rock band with my wife and a four year old girl, after U of H got their booty handed to them in the Sugar Bowl. My wife was playing the drums, and the little girl and I were on the couch behind her. I was just joking and pointed at my wife and whispered, "She’s a bed wetter." The little girl smile real big and said, "So am I." That really wasn’t the reaction I was going for so I just said, "All right, high five." Then she high fived me and I never joked about bed wetting again." ---tominhawii
