Webster the starter?
I was reading the Jason Quick article that Dave linked about Travis outlaw, after saying that travis hopes to be an all star quick mentioned that mccmillan is still envisioning travis of the bench and webster starting, also saying webster is the best three point shooter on the team.
"McMillan said he still envisions using Outlaw off the bench this season because he fits better with the second unit, where he won't have to compete for shot attempts with Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge and Greg Oden. Also, McMillan figures Martell Webster, the team's other small forward, is better suited for the starting unit because he is the team's best three-point shooter, which will be needed when opponents double-team Aldridge and Oden inside. "
Although alot of people around BE think Outlaw should be the starter and that his stats say he is as good of a three point shooter, i think two things should be looked at.
1. Martell Made 123 3pointers, and Travis Made 40, the pure volume lowered websters percentage but he is obviously comfortable taking threes and made most of them
2. It also mentions that travis needs alot of work handling himself on the perimeter

If you are saying that Outlaw is better on the 2nd unit, I agree
I love Travis, he is one of my fav. players, and although he is mentioned as having the ability to be an Allstar, I think he has a much much higher chance of being a 6th man contender every year. The fact that he is such a huge threat off the bench is the reason he is who he is… every championship team needs this guy coming off the bench.
The article is correct in stating that Travis needs to score and he wont be able to w/ the starting unit . Also, I have always thought that Martell is the better 3pt shooter. Obviously. Travis’ 3 pt ers came around JUST last season. Point is Marty is that assasin waiting outside when GO and LA get DT’s and even more so since JJ33 is gone. Travis isn’t.

Travis is better off the bench
But I find it odd that Frye was better as a starter when LA was hurt.Batman is the sf in the long run because defense brings the rings.

Well
Neither Martell nor Travis are proficient ball handlers. But Martell plays better within the offense, is better defensively, and is a better 3pt shooter. Travis is a volume scorer, he needs shots to get his points, he won’t find that in the first unit. It will be interesting to see how Rudy and Travis compliment each other in the second unit.

Big point - defense
Martell is responsible for the #1 or #2 option on the other team every night. As he does not need to perform at the same level offensively he can devote himself to that effort. Travis brings offense off the bench against likely the #4 or #5 option on the opponent team and does not need to be so strong on defense.

I just realized
our second unit is going to win us many games next year. Pryz, Frye, Outlaw, Rudy and Bayless are going to make other reserves look like NBDL cats.

Roy/Rudy
Blake/Bayless

Our reserves were ulta important in our 13 game run last year
and with injuries etc we lost that later. I remember thinking in January-March how much we were missing there as opponent’s bench players consistently outscored ours.

Depth
the depth of the PTB is what matters. It allows Nate to insert Web into the starting 5. Lets hope he plays with a little more enthusiasm. If Oden is the inside presence we hope, there should be no reason not for Martell to be a prominent player.

The first time I saw Cliff play ...it was live
It was also the 1st game I had ever seen in person. It was Pre-season in Cliffy’s rookie year and the Blazers came down to Medford and played in the North Medford Highschool gym. He was real tall (they all were, since we were sitting so low to the court).

not most of his threes
43% or whatever he shot from downtown does not translate into “most of his threes.” True he shot a good percentage for a volume three shooter. But he did not make most of them. Nope. The math is wrong.

yeah
and didn’t he actually hit like 39%? I think Webster is a good 3-point shooter in theory, but on the court he hasn’t actually been very reliable.
That said, I still think we should hold onto Webster and continue to allow him to develop, and that he should be the starter.
ok just checked he hit .388 from downtown. Hardly an assassin, but I’m confident he’ll figure it out.

That's pretty good, actually
for a volume shooter. To get the same effectiveness on 2 pointers, you would have to hit 58%.
