NY turns down Clips in trade for Zach
Wow. Losing Brand hurts. The Clippers are far enough under the cap to take Zach and give NY nothing but salary relief. NY says no thank you, but I'll bet this thing will happen. Zach is no Brand, but he brings a lot of similar stuff to the table.

What do you think that the Clippers would have to add to make NY go for it?

How about the Clips...
Make Isiah Thomas disappear…permanently? I bet that’d get NYK front office interest.

Dumb move
Randolph is terrible for D’Antoni’s system. he hates to run. His value is going to drop and they are going to have to eat his salary.

Yeah...
Walsh missed a huge chance to free up 20mil in cap space. It’s not like they are going to be better this season.

maybe
a couple of second rounders? It seems NYK should have done this.

Oh yeah
I suppose ZBo might be an ok replacement for Brand on O, but not on D. I believe that is a severe understatement.

I feel sorry for the Clips.
First they think that they have Davis, Brand, Kaman, Thornton and Gordon for the new season. That’s a Playoff team right there. But now they lose Brand! Poor Clips, they seem distined to be ridiculed!

If I'm NY
Man, if I’m Walsh I just to get a young player with potential away from the Clippers and let Zach walk. DeAndre Jordan for Zach straight up. The clippers are only giving up a 2nd round pick, but he has lots of potential and looked good in the summer league game. And they don’t have to care about salaries matching so it works fine.
by danielfarrell on Jul 12, 2008 7:11 AM PDT 0 recs
Lol
You don’t trade a 20/10 guy for a 2nd round player who is terrible. Dolan is loaded, money should not be an issue in NY. They need to get better, not cheaper.
by List of Demands on Jul 12, 2008 8:02 AM PDT 0 recs
Zach's going to stop them from getting better and from signing new players that are better
the cap isn’t just about having the money to pay the players. If you’re over the cap, you can’t sign a new player. That would mean no shot at LBJ in 2010.
I think the Knicks would be better without him period. You throw in that cap space will help them get even better, and it’s a no-brainer. They’re probably just posturing. I think they know that’s a solid deal.

And you don't trade him for Frye either
But no one thinks that didn’t work out well for us.

Addition by subtraction?
I doubt that his inability to get up and down the floor and his incessant floor pounding are going to go over so well in Dantoni’s system. ZBo just does not have that much value as evidenced by the fact the NYK could not dump him on the Sixers when it looked like they had no options at PF.

Cap Room in 2010
Donnie Walsh has said that the whole goal for the next couple of years is to create cap room in 2010, why would they pass up what looks the best way to do that?

Zach is a loser

Not about Zach but...
You know what might be interesting is if the Clips were to do a trade for one of our PF Ike Diogu (not sure if possible because we just got him) we could probally get a first round draft pick or something and its not like he will ever get playing time anyway behind LA, Frye and Trout (when he plays PF)

Yeah
Lottery protected, probably. I think it has to wait three months or something.

Anybody think...
Ike might be the answer for some inside muscle at the PF position? I have to admit I have not followed him at all and I thought he was just a throw in. But after reading a bit about his career in college and his injuries, if he gets healthy and proves he can score inside and play some strong defense and rebound this next few months, is it possible that Frye could be the odd man out? I love Frye’s attitude and parts of his game and if he can play like he did the last few games he will be hard to take out of the rotation BUT Ike looked like he had some pretty good potential before his injuries. RLEC and an emerging Frye could bring back some veteran help at the defensive end on the perimeter as the trading deadline approaches.
I was just wondering how people feel about Ike’s chances of being the muscle we need off the bench.

Diogu
Diogu played very well for the Pacers until he was injured; he’d already earned a spot in the rotation, anyway.

Walsh is getting greedy
He knows that the Clips are sort of desperate, and he’s trying to take advantage of it. I wonder if a three-team deal might materialize from it.

Gordon
They wanted to get Eric Gordon according to Hoopsworld. That’s just ridiculous. Instead of having a double threat run and gun back court for LA’s red headed step child of a team, let’s get the only guy that can make “Tractor” Traylor look like Nate Robinson and have him hoist up a ton of bad shots, start a war with the huge free agent we just signed over leadership and touches, blow up our chemistry, and push us over the brink into eternal purgatory. The Clippers better not do this, I dream of the day when all the LA guys wear Clippers gear and not those other guys.

Talks still alive
according to NBA.com
Please, Jah, let it be so. Could the whole Brand snafu have turnd the Clips into the new Knicks – a team so desperate for any kind of short-term, face-saving PR that they’d happily take on the most egregious long-term deals? With Isiah gone, I guess someone’s gotta provide a dumping ground for all the toxic contracts in the NBA. Maybe there’s a proviso in the CBA that says there must be one such GM in the league at all times (before Isiah, there was Whitsitt, after all…)

As long as you kept Isiah around, I think you’ll have to do penance a little longer.

3 team deal
Is why no team can afford to diss KP and the Blazers by signing Miles just for spite, with our roster, cap space and depth they need us more than we need them.

I have no idea why people hate Zach so much.
Double-double.
His off-court offenses were party fouls, in the big scheme of things…

Marbury and Zach for Davis and nothing (or a face-saving 2nd rounder)
It was rumored that New York was Davis’ preferred destination anyway. Some NYK fans initially may not love this, but it would be a genius move by Walsh that finally gives them a good point guard again and helps the franchise to creep out from cap space hell before 2010.
Also sets up LAC to rebuild with some space again next year after the SMEC comes off the books (next year’s draft should have some good PGs). And Kaman plus Zach, come on, there are many worse frontcourts in the NBA.

Davis is not BYC, I think
Which makes him effectively untradeable for a year.

You are right that this makes it harder
I always forget about the stupid BYC rule, though that just means he can’t be traded until December 15 and teams have to be more creative to make the salaries work. But yeah, it was an idea how NY could solve two problems in one trade, and the “Zach for next to nothing” is far easier to do and more realistic.
Other teams seem to have figured this method out as their preferred way to use their cap space this year (Minnesota absorbing players from Philly in the Brand deal, Seattle doing the same in the Kurt Thomas and Cleveland – Chicago deals, ...). Will be interesting to see if we offer our cap next year to take on less useful assets to enable deals.
