Kevin's Magic!!
When has there been a GM in this league get so much with so little. He started 3 yrs. ago with very little trade value, an over inflated payroll and few draft choices, and now has a roster full of great player with good character, both on the team and in unsigned draft choices, plus has added more future draft choices. Nate should be able to have some fun with this roster and create match-up nightmares for almost any team in the league.

Could someone list every trade he's ever done so we can talk about how unfair each and every one was for the other team?

KP's worst trade:
Dixon for Fred Jones.
When that is your worst move, my friends, you are doing pretty well.

I liked that move
Mainly because I HATED Juan Dixon and every minute he was out on the floor.
Jones was a serviceable semi-PG who was a lot better passer than I expected. I agree, if this is your worst move, it’s cool yo.
And luck would have it, Isiah still loved Fred from their Indy days, and we got our trade exception easily enough. Things seem to work out with KP at the helm! Luck and skill go hand in hand with the guy.

trading Fred Jones was a raw deal for him
as I mis-remember by trading Jones he was unable to secure as many millions as he could had the PTB kept him. I remember hearing this story once so it must be true as sure as I saw it on tv.

Yes'm and No'm
Fred Jones had to knock a year off his contract to be able to get traded to the Blazers, so he lost out on that guaranteed year of money to play for us, but trading him HELPED him in the long run, if ya asks me, because he would have gotten nearly ZERO minutes on our team this past season.
He was forced to play PG for the 2nd unit over Sergio sometimes, during his half season with us. With the Blake signing, the health of Roy, Jack as the backup, Martell and Trout and Jones doing okay, there would MAYBE be a few scraps for Jonesie. Even then, I’d rather Sergio gets those, even if I don’t think Sergio is better than Fred Jones (it’d be development minutes of course).
So, KP trades Jones, he gets to play for the Knicks and get a lot more playing time to show he is still a decent player. He coulda’ sat on our bench and after two sub-par seasons for the slam dunk champ he could be looking at playing in Europe or for peanuts in the NBA. He’s better than that, but needs to be on a team not stacked at the guard spot (and I wouldn’t necessarily call us STACKED last year, but we had plenty of decent-to-good players in front of Jones.)
It was a raw deal that he had to cut a year of guaranteed cash, but it will likely work out for him since Isiah loved him in Indiana and New York, and Donnie Walsh always liked him as well. Walsh would likely keep Jones and re-sign him for decent cash, as he isn’t a bad PG in a pinch and is an athletic player who could really fit D’Antoni’s style.
On the surface, we screwed Jones. In the long run though, he got put in a “better” situation (for his career, anyways).

How about this?
2006 Draft – the first in which KP officially gains control (although Steve Patterson was technically still the reigning GM, I believe)…
Blazers trade Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a 2008 second round pick for Raef LaFrentz, Dan Dickau and the 7th overall pick (Randy Foye).
Blazers trade #4 pick (Tyrus Thomas) and third string hero Victor Khryapa for the rights to some guy from Texas (#2 pick LaMarcus Aldridge).
Blazers trade the rights to #7 overall pick Randy Foye for #6 pick out of the University of Washington, Brandon Roy. Stephen A. Smith at this point famously claims "The Blazers have no idea what they’re doing." And by saying "they have no idea what they were doing," he actually meant "The Portland Trail Blazers are beginning to stockpile young talent, which will probably continue from now until eternity.”
KP purchases the 27th pick from Phoenix and acquires the player Chad Ford calls "the steal of the draft" Sergio Rodriguez. Cigarette sales in Oregon triple.
Portland also acquires the rights to Joel Freeland, from Detroit, but he immediately decides he’s more at home judging "So You Think You Can Dance." You may recognize him by his stage name "Nigel."
Holding the most valuable asset in the 2006 draft (the first pick in the second round), KP immediately trade the rights to James White (31st pick) to the Indiana Pacers for the rights to Alexander Johnson and 2 future second round picks. Johnson is then immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for a "future second round pick." Which happens to be exponentially better than being traded for 10 baseball bats. As a rookie, Johnson averaged 4.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 59 games played.
OUT: Telfair, Ratliff, Victor Khryapa, some of Paul Allen’s money (roughly $5 million, I think).
IN: Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Sergio Rodriguez, the rights to Joel Freeland, Raef LaFrentz’s future expiring contract, and Lasik Eye Surgery expert Dan Dickau.
2006 Season (also known as "The Rebirth")…
KP makes the best decision of his career, hiring a young intern out of Willamette University to write for Blazers.com. Contrary to what you’ve read from the New York Knicks, interns are not always propositioned for sexual favors nor are they given lavish promotions after "getting in the back of the truck." However, I can assure you that Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge are just as cool as you think they are in person and a team full of 20 year olds is substantially less intimidating as a young writer than a team of seasoned veterans.
Midway through the season, KP saves Oregon’s own Fred Jones from the frozen tundra of Toronto by shipping Juan Dixon’s malcontent attitude up north. Oregon fans everywhere rejoice, but fans of the Blazers who are originally from Washington are quick to point out that the Oregon boy is not quite as good as the University of Washington boy (GO HUSKIES!).
2007 Draft (see also: Oden vs. Durant)…
Content with winning the number one pick, KP chooses Greg Oden #1 overall and then takes the rest of the night off…
But after a few cocktails, KP gets the bug again to spend some of Paul Allen’s money (who doesn’t want to spend money after a few drinks?), so he calls his good buddy Robert Sarver and acquires the 25th pick (Rudy Fernandez) and then later acquires Finnish point guard Petteri Koponen by swapping second round pick Derrick Byars (#42) to Philadelphia. AM/PM owners throughout Oregon rejoice and immediately start stockpiling cigarettes. Strangely, it becomes very hard to buy deodorant…
Pritchard also acquires Josh McRoberts with the #37 pick which slightly overshadows the smallest move of the night: Portland trades PF and shoulda-coulda-woulda-almost-was-an All-Star (aka Mr. 20/10) Zach Randolph, Fred Jones and Dan Dickau for "The Buffet of Goodness" Channing Frye and Steve Francis. Security immediately escorts Steve Francis away from the practice facility and he’s never heard from again (in hindsight, did KP have Francis killed? Whoa. He really can get away with anything.) By including Fred Jones and Dan Dickau in the trade, Portland gains a trade exception and immediately acquires James Jones from the Phoenix Suns (thank you, Tom Penn!).
Including Fred Jones, however, breaks the hearts of Oregon basketball fans everywhere (although, we still have UW shooting guard Brandon Roy, so all is well in Washington) and it’s yet another example of "basketball as a business."
The Knicks (Go Isiah, go!) also work out a trade for second round pick Demetrius Nichols who Portland selects with the #53 pick in exchange for what I believe was a future second rounder. One pick earlier, Portland selects Florida point guard Taureen Green with a second round pick they received in the Juan Dixon for Fred Jones deal.
OUT: Zach Randolph, Fred Jones, Dan Dickau
IN: Channing Frye, Steve Francis (cut immediately), James Jones (baller), Greg Oden, the rights to Rudy Fernandez and Petteri Koponen, Josh McRoberts and Taureen Green.
2007 Season (aka The Return of Rip City)…
Despite early claims that the team needs some veteran leadership, KP only makes one deal all season (trading Souljah Boy expert Taureen Green for Baron Von Wafer of the Denver Nuggets) and the team still finishes 41 – 41. They snap a ridiculously long streak of "consecutive losing months" by basically going undefeated in December (not really, but really, really close) and they’re everyone’s new chic pick for the next Western Conference powerhouse.
2008 Draft (aka Now It’s Getting Ridiculous)…
The Blazers enter the draft with a young, talented roster and the #13 pick, but that just isn’t enough for our Sith Lord-ian General Manager. Pritchard does not merely want to "quell the resistance," he wants to end basketball as we know it. In "Remember the Titans," Denzel Washington & Will Patton make sure that they "leave no doubt" against the team with the racist coach. Well, the 2008 draft was Paul Allen and Kevin Pritchard’s "leave no doubt" game.
Deal #1: Blazers send #13 pick (Brandon Rush) plus Jarrett Jack to the Indiana Pacers for #11 pick Jerryd Bayless (expected, by most, to go #4 to the Seattle SuperSonics) and Ike Diogu. Players of NBA Live everywhere know Ike Diogu as a very cheap and underrated power forward who is frequently available in the late rounds of a fantasy draft, but he still scores like an early pick.
Deal #2: Actually a couple separate deals, but KP purchases New Orleans #27 pick for $3 million, and uses the pick to select Darrell Arthur out of Kansas. The pick in itself is a great one, because Arthur was projected to go as high as #11 (in our BE mock draft), but Arthur is immediately dealt to Houston, along with #33 pick Joey Dorsey, for the rights to Nicolas Batum (#25 in the draft) just to spite the San Antonio Spurs who had allegedly promised Batum a spot in the rotation. Arthur is later dealt to Memphis in a separate transaction.
Deal #3: With the #36 pick, the Blazers select Omar Asik of Turkey, but he is immediately dealt to Chicago for a package that includes 3 future second round picks (obviously, KP loves his second rounders – they’re like trading cards!). Mike Taylor, the #55 pick, becomes the first NBA player drafted out of the D-League, and is then whisked away to the Clippers for another future second rounder.
OUT: Jarrett Jack
IN: Jerryd Bayless, the rights to Nicolas Batum, and Ike Diogu

True...
But in all fairness to the creator of this post, I think it would be safe to say we could threadjack this one and analyze all of KP’s moves over the past 3 years (3 drafts at least)...
My favorite is obviously the Roy-for-Foye deal, because, in hindsight, that was the first indication we had an aggressive GM who wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Despite being “foiled” by Minnesota, KP was still able to get the player he wanted at the cost of what? Sebastian Telfair?
How many times would the average Blazers fan trade Sebastian Telfair (and Theo’s corpse) for Brandon Roy? The over/under would probably start at infinity…
My least favorite would most likely be the constant dealing of second round picks. After looking at this extensively, it seems like sometimes he trades them, just to trade them (as I probably would, too) and we’ve never really gotten an impact player out of our late first, early second round picks. Although, this all goes out the window if Petteri Koponen, Sergio Rodriguez or Nicolas Batum (even Rudy Fernandez to an extent although I consider him an isolated case) become solid rotation players, in which case KP is truly a genius.
There’s the inclusion of Fred Jones in the Zach Randolph trade which some people did not like, but we need to realize that including Fred Jones meant we got to keep Martell Webster AND acquire James Jones…
Taureen Green for Von Wafer was strange too, considering Green was such a likeable club house personality…

I think the second rounders
you’re talking about potential and so you snag people you think have a chance to break out or surprise. I really don’t see an issue if he only hits 10% or so on those. Even then I think you’re doing pretty good.

Completely agree...
You’re absolutely right, in that he trades them to compile a combination of “potential” players and additional options for the future, and we should also take into consideration that the odds of a second round pick becoming a rotation player is something like less than 5%.
If KP goes through 100 second round draft picks, he’s bound to win the lottery with at least 1 or 2 of them…

KP has described the 2nd rounders
as “currency”. Going into the draft everyone talks with KP because he has the “currency” to help them get who they want. He spends a few but still manages to take more into next year. They seem part of his genius.
Taureen Green was not going to get another year here and now in Denver – maybe so it was a kindness to him as well as acquiring a shooter in Von Wafer. Von did get a chance to play but couldn’t hit as I remember.
Fred Jones may have been key to the Zach trade as KP likely acquired him for that purpose (Isiah maybe coveted him).

in the deal.
McHale is an idiot.
After KP took Ainge to school in the Telfair/Theo for Raef/#7 pick (Foye then Roy), Ainge realized he was better off dealing with McHale- and it got him a title.

They had a deal
Like we had with Indy: we draft for each other, swap the picks plus money, and avoid the team inbetween us taking the players we want.
Minny had a deal with Houston at #8… Houston wanted Roy, Minny wanted Foye, by Minny taking Roy Houston tried to freeze out the Blazers, thinking we would go ‘OH WELL’ and draft Rudy Gay. Instead, we break up the plan by taking Foye, forcing Minny to deal with us, and Houston trades Gay for Battier.
Minny did it for extra money, a cheaper player, and perhaps another player from Houston. We did it this year with Indy to make sure Sacramento didn’t get our dude, and it opened up roster space as well.

Free Agents...
I was considering adding Free Agents, but to the best of my knowledge KP has yet to sign a free agent besides Steve Blake, correct? So, you can’t really say he treated another team unfairly by letting a free agent walk or resigning another team’s free agent…
Out:
Ime Udoka (helped the Spurs, but also opened up time for Travis and Webster)
James Jones (likewise in Miami)
Jamaal “Get Off the Floor” Magloire (killed me on NBA Live last night for the Nets, but wasn’t worth keeping)...
In:
Steve Blake (a steal if you consider production divided by price)

I chuckle most about Isiah trading for Nichols and then cutting him in training camp
because they had 15 guaranteed contracts! (Like Isiah forget that???) That was the pick we used to get Omer Asik then traded to Chicago for (3) 2nd round picks including New York’s 2009 2nd. Both Chicago and New York picks in 2009 are likely to be high in the round as both have new coaches and new point guards.
Note the use of a 2nd to get Batum ahead of San Antonio. Could be the bigger heist of the night. We will not miss getting Joey Dorsey.

Well to be fair to Nash
The payroll was not that bad because nash was gave every veteran we had the Axe but Pritch did come and clean up. Not to take anything away from him though, he has done borderline miracle work. Look how long it takes most teams to come back from rebuilding (ex. Bulls, Magic). To be at .500 ball, blow up the team, and be back at .500 within 3-4 years just doesn’t happen in this league very often.

Excellent point!
Chicago gave up on their rebuilding and traded away Chandler and other pieces. I hope KP does not get impatient with this great talented group we now have. I keep hearing we need a veteran but so far we are doing fine (although JJ33 was very important in the 13 gave winning streak).
These guys will learn as most of us do — by trying hard, making mistakes and learning more from the mistakes than anything else.

This might sound cocky
But I think the biggest difference between our rebuild and theirs is the caliber of players. Curry, Chandler, Gordon, Hinrich, all serviceable to GOOD players but none are franchise types. True we got lucky with Oden, and they got lucky with Rose, but Roy and LMA are both great players to surround with other types, and the Bulls haven’t been as fortunate.
Oden/LMA/Roy is just plain better than Curry/Chandler/Gordon/Hinrich/Deng/Rose. Both teams rebuilded through the draft; we were fortunate and skilled enough to pick the right dudes or luck into a year where great players were where we were drafting.
Impatience won’t come into play I think, except with the peripheral guys like Webster, Sergio, Outlaw, Frye, Ike, etc. Our CORE won’t run out of time with KP, and only if we moved one or all of them would we be rebuilding again. We got what we wanna have, just need to fill out the rest.
The Bulls changed their core to build around a few times, and still don’t got guys they are sure about. They’re at a point where they gotta PAY Gordon and Deng as if they were sure about them (like they paid Nocioni and Hinrich), so it’s a difficult crossroads. They ain’t winning a title with them as their best players (unless Rose is Chris Paul part 2), so why pay them as if they will lead the team there?
Tough decisions. Can’t let them walk, after all…
I don’t think we’ll face those hard decisions with our core. We know we want them.

I like our core and
most of the rest of the guys we now have. Martell really needs 2 more seasons to show what he can do and I think (hope?) that he will be an All-Star some day. Travis has been money on the second unit and at the end of games. Raef will soon be gone and Sergio seems to be the most questionable and needs a really good year.
There are so many options here but they can only dress 12 and usually a rotation is 8 to 10. So someday there may need to be a salary calculation to how much can they afford to pay someone who is very good but is at the end of the bench. But we are several years from that point.

It’s a nice word for this situation. It might not be a fancy $10 dollar word boughten at a boutique, but it done n’ served it’s purpose.
And iffin’ you liked the word, why would that be rude to point out?
If you had a rebuild period in the past, you previously had ‘rebuilded’. If there is a better term, I don’t even wanna hear it because it will blow my mind.

Ike
I think they like Ike. He’s just had the injury bug – but when he’s played, his rebounds and points per minutes were good. I think Mac likes the idea that he’s now got an enforcer he can mix into the group. If they start pushing on Oden, he can put Ike in there and he can definitiely do a lot pushing back. Nice option to have.

In point of fact, you are correct...
...that we don’t know what we are talking about, because we don’t know how Diogu yet will respond to the opportunities our new roster present. However, this is the fantasize-about-the-future part of the season, so we are entitled to indulge in a bit fantasy for the time being ;-)
Time may prove you right about him being zach-lite. On the other hand, Diogu has played enough to give us legitimate hope that he will be a bulldog in the paint. From his prior playing history it appears he has attitudes and attributes that were…um…somewhat lacking from time to time with last year’s squad. My post came in response to the thought of a Kevin Garnett or Utah type again trying to intimidate our youngins’. Put in Oden and Diogu, and it is possible to imagine them backing off. Problem solved.
